Chapter 18

Right.

The specimen room in the West Building wasn’t the only one.

In other specimen rooms, there were more Carrion Ghouls.

There weren’t just four of them here, nor just these five.

Xie Qingling’s brow furrowed deeply, then she immediately turned and ran, dashing out of the specimen room.

Whether it was one, two, or however many,

Her immediate task was to lure those Carrion Ghouls away from the specimen room.

The moment Xie Qingling moved, the Carrion Ghouls immediately followed, chasing after her with grotesque howls and clawing gestures.

However, two of them lingered in the specimen room, seemingly unwilling to leave the readily available dismembered limbs on the floor.

Compared to the still living, active Spirit User outside, they appeared to prefer these nearby, easily accessible morsels.

Gritting her teeth, Xie Qingling took the Bone Saw Knife and made a cut across her palm.

Crimson blood instantly stained her pale hand, and the scent of blood immediately filled the air.

She wasn’t using a Spirit User’s blood to combat the Carrion Ghouls Spirit User blood had limited effectiveness against certain ghosts, and it was no longer useful here.

The blood of a Spirit User what an irresistible, maddening scent. As one blessed by the gods, you attract countless covetous gazes in the realm of ghosts. They wait for any chance to tear you apart and devour you whole.

Every Spirit User walking the mysterious world strives to protect their flesh and blood, yet here you are, offering yourself as bait. Though Carrion Ghouls feed on corpses, they would never refuse the flesh and blood of a Spirit User it is the ultimate delicacy, the rarest of feasts. Once your heart stops, they will feast voraciously, gorging themselves.

This was exactly what Xie Qingling intended.

The scent of Spirit User blood quickly spread, its irresistible allure detected by every Carrion Ghoul in the teaching building.

They ceased their feeding and converged toward the source of the tantalizing aroma.

That scent was something the Carrion Ghouls simply couldn’t resist!

Xie Qingling left the West Building and ran toward the East Building, trailed by a swarm of bluish black, tumor like creatures.

The incessant “click clack” sounds left no doubt in her mind if they caught her, she would be instantly shredded, not even bone fragments remaining!

Xie Qingling reached the fourth floor of the East Building.

By now, a long trail of Carrion Ghouls followed behind her, so many she couldn’t see the end of them.

Her scalp prickled there was no time to count.

The sheer number of Carrion Ghouls far exceeded her expectations, making her want to curse aloud.

Fortunately, their massive numbers hindered their movement in the narrow corridors. They stumbled and jostled, each small Carrion Ghoul squeezing through gaps, but their overwhelming density caused them to stick together.

The crowded hallway was packed with Carrion Ghouls, some even being pushed over the edge of the open air corridor and falling below.

This bought Xie Qingling a brief moment to catch her breath.

However, this didn’t mean she was safe.

The Carrion Ghouls that fell to the ground weren’t dead.

They crawled back up, scaling the walls and railings to climb upward.

Xie Qingling now faced scattered Carrion Ghouls blocking her path, their numbers steadily increasing until they formed an encircling ring.

One ghoul climbed up from the side railing, attempting to grab Xie Qingling’s leg, but she kicked it back down.

No she had to keep running, couldn’t stop.

The Carrion Ghouls were simply too numerous.

Xie Qingling abruptly swerved from her straight path, darting into a wide open classroom and slamming the door shut behind her.

With a fierce sprint, she shattered the window and leaped out without hesitation, escaping the encirclement.

After landing firmly on the ground, she began circling the East Building’s teaching block, running from the first floor entrance to the main hall.

This maneuver instantly threw the Carrion Ghouls’ formation into disarray.

Screeching in fury, they scattered in all directions, each searching for Xie Qingling.

Though temporarily free from the ghouls’ pursuit, the situation remained grim.

On the first floor, previously dislodged Carrion Ghouls were gathering in small groups, charging toward Xie Qingling.

She immediately sprinted toward the stairwell, hoping to evade them.

But this time, the Carrion Ghouls had grown smarter.

Fearing they might lose track of her again, they learned to cooperate two ghouls lifted another and hurled it violently toward Xie Qingling!

Should she dodge?

No.

At this distance and speed, evasion was impossible!

Then she had to face it head on.

Xie Qingling tightened her grip on the Bone Saw Knife, aiming at the incoming ghoul, ready to strike

Suddenly, a piercing shriek echoed as green smoke erupted. The Carrion Ghoul mid air was eliminated.

Midnight Noon Ebb Flow, Yin Yang Interior Exterior. The Divine Skill forged by ancient sages reappeared in the world Silver Needles to save lives, Black Needles to slay ghosts. The healer who tended the sick now wielded a blade to exterminate spirits.

Ye Anran arrived urgently, appearing before Xie Qingling.

In her hand was a long needle roll packed with two dense rows of needles one white, one black.

As Carrion Ghouls continued converging on the first floor, Ye Anran’s expression turned stern. Pinching Black Needles between her fingers, she shot down every ghoul that drew near.

“…Why are there so many ghosts?” Ye Anran frowned. “It’s only been six minutes. Did we stumble into a ghost nest?”

“There are even more inside the teaching building,” Xie Qingling murmured.

“…” Ye Anran fell silent.

It seemed this mission was more complicated than expected.

But such unforeseen circumstances weren’t entirely new. Ye Anran quickly regained composure, even reassuring the rookie: “Don’t panic. Stay calm. Once the department head arrives, we can wipe them all out.”

Xie Qingling wasn’t panicked.

She nodded, watching the accumulating Carrion Ghouls, and shouted, “Run! Don’t stop! I’ll draw them away!”

Yet Ye Anran didn’t leave. Instead, she kept pace with Xie Qingling as they swiftly ascended the stairs.

She stayed close because she had caught the scent of blood.

Xie Qingling’s palm was still dripping blood.

No wonder these ghosts were chasing after Xie Qingling.

With such a strong scent of blood, wasn’t this an invitation for the Carrion Ghouls to feast? Without healing the wound first, no matter where she ran, the Carrion Ghouls would quickly find Xie Qingling.

Ye Anran wanted to treat Xie Qingling’s wound, but Xie Qingling refused.

Xie Qingling said: “No, then they won’t be able to find me.”

“…Huh?” Ye Anran was utterly confused, her face full of astonishment.

This newcomer, did she know what she was saying?

“I’m going to lead them on a chase,” Xie Qingling insisted.

When they reached the second floor corridor, Carrion Ghouls were already jumping down like dumplings from various staircases and the third floor hallway densely packed, covering the sky and ground, instantly filling the corridor.

And Xie Qingling was still running around with her blood covered hand.

Ye Anran suddenly understood.

No wonder the situation had become so massive Xie Qingling was actually the one controlling the initiative!

These ghosts were all lured by her using herself as bait.

“Are you crazy?” Ye Anran shouted. “You’re being too reckless! The department head will scold us to death!”

Xie Qingling showed no intention of stopping.

She only asked: “Can you cure the Carrion Ghouls’ poison?”

“Yes.”

Hearing this, Xie Qingling felt much more at ease. Her previous concerns largely disappeared, and her movements became more unrestrained.

Another Carrion Ghoul lunged at her face on. This time, Xie Qingling didn’t dodge or avoid it, but directly charged forward to meet it.

As the Carrion Ghoul raised its sharp claws at her, Xie Qingling blocked slightly with one hand while her other hand wielded the Bone Saw Knife, directly sending the Carrion Ghoul away with a single slash.

Five bloody marks appeared on her arm, and the wounds quickly showed blue black traces from the corrosive poison.

“Heal me!” Xie Qingling said to Ye Anran without looking back, then immediately targeted the next Carrion Ghoul and charged forward.

She had completely let loose.

“We’re doomed! If the department head scolds anyone, don’t you dare drag me into it! You have to explain for me! I’m innocent! I would never be this reckless!” Ye Anran cried out in despair.

Though she said this…

As a support position, cooperating with teammates had become Ye Anran’s instinct. She immediately dispelled the poison from Xie Qingling’s arm while simultaneously healing the claw marks.

As for the wound on Xie Qingling’s palm, she left it untouched.

The blood continued to flow.

Xie Qingling’s way of speaking and acting was too decisive, too calm this reminded Ye Anran of Ling Fang whenever he assigned missions.

Even though she didn’t agree with Xie Qingling’s methods, at this moment, she still chose to respect the other’s wishes and cooperate with her actions.

Although as a senior, being ordered around by a newcomer felt quite strange, but…

Watching the figure ahead who fought with increasingly reckless abandon, completely fearless, daring to fight and kill, growing more frenzied with each kill Ye Anran sometimes even forgot she was still a newcomer who had just joined the team.

The blood soaked Xie Qingling attracted most of the firepower, with the majority of Carrion Ghouls chasing after her. The remaining three to five Carrion Ghouls circled around Ye Anran, and dealing with these few misfits was relatively easy for her.
She maintained a moderate distance from Xie Qingling, ensuring she could provide support at any moment from this position while avoiding being surrounded herself.

As a doctor, her primary duty was to maintain control of the situation protect herself first, then assist her teammate. This wasn’t selfishness but the most strategic choice for the team’s overall benefit. Ye Anran would never allow herself to get injured.

Meanwhile, Xie Qingling led the way ahead. Though still inexperienced against Spirits, her four years in the dissection room had honed her courage and instincts every slash of her blade was swift, precise, and ruthless. With the doctor periodically detoxifying and healing her, Xie Qingling fought forward with unwavering confidence.

Years of combat honed teamwork allowed Ye Anran to quickly find her rhythm. Despite being their first collaboration, they coordinated seamlessly. Backed by Ye Anran’s support, Xie Qingling fought with ferocious intensity, nearly recklessly carving a path through the second floor corridor before charging straight to the third floor.

They traversed the long hallway, moving from the east wing to the west. Xie Qingling didn’t seem to be moving aimlessly but rather heading toward a specific destination.

Baffled, Ye Anran shouted after her retreating figure, “Where are you going?”

“To retrieve a weapon that belongs to me.”

Xie Qingling took a deep breath, lifted her leg, and kicked open the door of a specimen room on the third floor. A plaque on the door read:

Human Skeleton Specimen Room.
