Chapter 17
After finishing her words, Xie Qingling turned off her earpiece in advance, cutting off Ling Fang’s potentially dissuasive words on the other end.
She sprinted frantically toward the specimen room.
The specimens used in the specimen room, including the anatomy classes held in the laboratory, were all donated by members of society.
After their deaths, they had donated all or part of their organs. In the years that followed, their organs were preserved in formaldehyde, taken out, and put back in.
Generation after generation of students made incisions on their bodies and sutured them closed.
Until they could no longer be used, until there was no place left to make a cut.
They were scarred and battered, their skin mottled and discolored, yet from their remains, students could bring the hope of life to the living. Through every cut made on their bodies, they repaid society with the advancement of medicine.
Death was not the end of their life’s value.
Xie Qingling would always remember her first anatomy class during her sophomore year.
The instructor, with a stern expression, had said: “Today, as you stand here, before entering the dissection room, I will teach you the first rule one you must abide by for the rest of your lives. No matter when, where, or for whom, you must always keep this rule engraved in your hearts.”
“That is always remember the contributions these individuals have made to humanity.”
“They are your most respected and grateful Cadaver Teachers on your path in medicine.”
The bodies of the Cadaver Teachers were the heaviest textbooks.
From that day on, every time Xie Qingling and her classmates entered the dissection room, they would first observe a moment of silence and pay their respects.
But now, the bodies of these Cadaver Teachers were being treated as food by these despicable Fierce Ghosts, gnawed until they were mangled and bloody.
What these creatures were devouring was not just the flesh of these Cadaver Teachers, but also their human will and dignity. They had lain here with immense courage and a spirit of sacrifice not to become fodder for these monsters!
Rage surged through Xie Qingling, her eyes turning red.
Kill these Carrion Ghouls!
With a click, Xie Qingling drew her pistol and released the safety.
The pistol had five rounds in total. If her accuracy was high enough, she should be able to take down these four Carrion Ghouls in the shortest time possible.
As long as she was careful enough…
Xie Qingling pulled the trigger, aiming at one of the Carrion Ghouls.
Bang! The bullet struck the wall behind the Carrion Ghoul, the specially made ammunition corroding the surface and releasing wisps of green smoke.
Missed.
Again.
Another bang as Xie Qingling fired a second shot.
Still missed.
Xie Qingling began to grow anxious, but she steadied herself and quickly fired two more shots.
All misses!
Damn it!
Xie Qingling’s face darkened.
So movies and TV shows were all lies no one became a sharpshooter that easily.
This thing required not just good aim, but also accounting for the pistol’s recoil and the target’s movement path. It heavily tested the shooter’s feel and ability to anticipate.
Four shots fired, and not a single Carrion Ghoul had been taken down. Instead, Xie Qingling had exposed herself to danger.
The commotion just made had attracted the attention of four Carrion Ghouls. They simultaneously turned their heads toward Xie Qingling if the indistinct mass of tumors on their necks could be considered heads.
The Carrion Ghouls dropped the dismembered limbs they were holding, let out two eerie “caw-caw” cries, and charged fiercely at Xie Qingling.
Although Carrion Ghouls feed on decaying corpses, they were equally intrigued by the strange fragrance emanating from this human before them.
Besides, if they could kill her, wouldn’t they have a fresh corpse to feast on?
The body of a recently deceased Spirit User how fresh and delectable that would taste…
Unlike the newly awakened Rakshasa Ghost, who couldn’t even lift a blade, these Carrion Ghouls had already fed.
The Carrion Ghouls’ limbs were short, and as they ran, their stumpy legs barely became visible, making their overall appearance resemble wobbling masses of tumors moving rapidly.
They moved in a straight line, sprinting directly toward Xie Qingling with astonishing speed. In the blink of an eye, they were right in front of her.
With a “whoosh,” the Carrion Ghouls swung their claws at Xie Qingling. Their hands resembled beast-like paws, with nails that were entirely black. The force behind their swings was so powerful that it created a sharp, cutting sound through the air.
Xie Qingling instinctively wanted to evade she had no intention of testing how well she could withstand such a blow.
The thought had barely formed when her body reacted faster than her mind. Her feet directly stepped onto the wall behind her. To a Spirit User, a vertical wall was as traversable as level ground. Using the wall’s reactive force, Xie Qingling executed a graceful backflip.
By the time her feet touched the horizontal ground again and she steadied herself, she was already standing behind the Carrion Ghouls.
The Carrion Ghouls’ attack had missed.
As a Devotee of Houtu, you have luckily avoided this strike. However, be extremely cautious Carrion Ghouls usually act in groups and hold strong grudges against common enemies. Having fed on decay year-round, their bodies have accumulated untold amounts of toxins. Their rotting, foul skin and pitch-black claws all carry deadly poison.
The ghouls’ bluish-black, decaying skin clearly indicated they were no ordinary threat, and Xie Qingling had already suspected they might be venomous.
Now, the several Carrion Ghouls turned their heads toward her, their foam-flecked mouths gnashing wildly. Their teeth clacked together, producing a grating, unsettling sound. Though their mouths were empty, they kept staring at Xie Qingling while maintaining a chewing motion, as if imagining biting into her and simulating devouring her they were utterly enraged.
The furious Carrion Ghouls charged at Xie Qingling in unison, intent on cutting her down with their claws once more.
But this time, before they could close in, Xie Qingling preemptively grabbed a chair leaning against the wall and hurled it at them with all her might.
She held nothing back, putting her full strength into the throw.
If an ordinary human had been struck by a Spirit User’s full-force throw, they would have been crushed into pulp by the immense impact.
The chair accurately smashed into one of the Carrion Ghouls with a loud “bang,” shattering into pieces as if exploding. Yet, the ghoul only had its body momentarily flattened before quickly restoring itself to its original form.
It let out a strange, cackling laugh, as if mocking Xie Qingling’s overestimation of her own abilities. The grating “click-clack” sound of its teeth gnashing together was unbearably irritating, stirring an inexplicable sense of agitation.
After the brief obstruction, they continued charging toward Xie Qingling.
Right mundane weapons had no effect on these creatures. What was needed were items imbued with Spirit.
Then… what about this?
Xie Qingling took a deep breath, channeled the Spirit within her, infused it into another chair, and hurled it violently at the Carrion Ghoul.
With a loud “thud,” the leading Carrion Ghoul was smashed into a pulp. After letting out a bizarre shriek, it dissolved into a wisp of green smoke and vanished.
Success!
Finally finding a clue in the midst of confusion, Xie Qingling breathed a soft sigh of relief.
She understood now.
As long as she mastered the method, these four Carrion Ghouls weren’t as difficult to deal with as they seemed.
Though they moved swiftly, attacked in groups, and came equipped with their own biochemical weapons making them appear invincible their weaknesses were equally obvious.
The bodies of the Carrion Ghouls were actually quite fragile, unable to withstand significant damage.
Just moments ago, a single strike from her had been enough to eliminate one of them.
The remaining three shouldn’t pose much of a problem.
Their attacks were monotonous, limited to swiping with their toxin-laced claws.
Her chances of victory were still quite high.
The intense battle left little time for contemplation. As the Carrion Ghouls launched another fierce assault, Xie Qingling had already anticipated their moves. Repeating her earlier tactic, she evaded their attack.
Once again, she leaped behind the Carrion Ghouls, her hands groping for the remembered location. Soon, amid the chaos of the specimen room, she found a bow-shaped Bone Saw Knife.
The cool touch and familiar grip brought her a slight sense of reassurance.
Compared to a handgun, these medical dissection tools that had accompanied her for four years felt far more natural in her hands.
Again, she channeled Spirit, infusing it into the blade of the Bone Saw Knife.
Now, against the Carrion Ghouls, Xie Qingling had a weapon of her own.
She fixed her gaze on the remaining three Carrion Ghouls, shifting her position slowly, almost pacing, to avoid being cornered during the fight.
Having failed twice and lost one of their own, the Carrion Ghouls gnashed their teeth loudly. This time, instead of rushing to attack Xie Qingling, they paused, huddling together as if discussing something.
Then, the three Carrion Ghouls clung to one another, rolling toward Xie Qingling like a ball.
Their bodies fused together, appearing larger and more imposing, occupying the limited space and leaving no room to evade.
If crushed by their combined weight or exposed to their toxins, Xie Qingling would be in serious trouble.
Her eyes narrowed sharply. She had already prepared, gripping the last remaining chair as a makeshift shield to keep the Carrion Ghouls at bay and prevent them from getting too close.
At the same time, she raised the newly acquired Bone Saw Knife high with her other hand and swung it at the Carrion Ghouls.
Infused with Spirit, the Bone Saw Knife now possessed the power to slay ghouls.
The blade cut deeply into the Carrion Ghoul’s body, leaving trails of green smoke in its wake.
The Carrion Ghoul let out an unwilling shriek, but ultimately fell beneath Xie Qingling’s blade.
Both the sound and the green smoke dissipated in the blink of an eye.
The four Carrion Ghouls feasting in the specimen room had all been cleared out.
Only a scene of utter chaos remained.
Before she could feel any joy over eliminating all the Carrion Ghouls, Xie Qingling stood amidst the scattered limbs and debris, scanning the horrifying sight in the room. She felt so distressed she nearly broke down in tears.
But first, she needed to inform Ling Fang that the Carrion Ghouls had been dealt with.
Xie Qingling reached to tap her earpiece.
Before her fingertip could even touch it, an intense sense of danger suddenly surged from behind her. Her temples throbbed uneasily on their own.
Something was targeting her!
Without a second thought, obeying her body’s instincts, she immediately crouched and rolled sideways along the ground.
At the same time, a foul-smelling gust of wind blew in through the window.
The next moment, a snarling Carrion Ghoul leaped into the specimen room through the window.
It let out a bizarre “cackle” at Xie Qingling, landing precisely where she had been standing moments before
It had jumped in from outside the window, intending to ambush her!
Realizing what had just happened, even though she had successfully dodged the sneak attack, Xie Qingling’s face turned pale, and she broke out in a cold sweat.
Gripping her Bone Saw Knife tightly, she shifted her position while searching for the best moment to finish it off.
But soon, something even more terrifying occurred.
From the window, a second, third, fourth, fifth… Carrion Ghoul leaped in.
