Chapter 16
This teaching building consists of eastern and western wings connected by an open-air corridor.
The first two floors of the eastern wing contain classrooms for theoretical courses, while the third and fourth floors house laboratories for anatomy, human physiology, and similar subjects.
The western wing’s first two floors contain college offices, faculty offices, and multimedia conference rooms, while the third and fourth floors hold specimen rooms and the Experimental Animal Remains Disposal Center.
Having attended classes here for four years, Xie Qingling knew the building’s layout like the back of her hand, including the function of every single classroom.
During class hours, most people in the building were concentrated in the eastern wing’s classrooms and laboratories.
The college offices in the western wing likely had some staff on duty, and teachers without classes were probably in their offices, but overall, there wouldn’t be many people around.
The Experimental Animal Remains Disposal Center was typically empty at this time, as the college usually arranged for incineration plant workers to collectively process the animal remains on Tuesday afternoons.
Taking point alone on her first mission, Xie Qingling couldn’t help but take a deep breath.
She wasn’t particularly nervous though, having thoroughly memorized the operational guidelines and precautions Ye Anran had given her.
Following Ling Fang’s instructions, Xie Qingling was now methodically planning her next moves in her mind.
She rushed into the western wing with clear purpose, heading straight for the Experimental Animal Remains Disposal Center.
The remains center was locked, but this posed no obstacle to Xie Qingling.
After stretching her legs, she raised one foot and delivered a powerful kick. With a loud “bang,” a hole immediately appeared in the previously solid door.
Xie Qingling flexed her foot, feeling no pain, then delivered several more kicks until she had created an opening large enough to pass through.
The physical resilience of a Spirit User was truly remarkable.
Finding the Experimental Animal Remains Disposal Center empty, Xie Qingling slipped inside to see several large bedroom-sized freezers standing in the room.
Inside these freezers, the remains of animals used in experiments were sealed in plastic bags and neatly arranged. Each bag was labeled with the experiment’s purpose, date of death, and cause of death.
Xie Qingling carefully avoided the animal remains with yellow tags these indicated the bodies carried hereditary pathogens and were infectious. Releasing them without proper sterilization would be dangerous.
Locating three recently deceased white rabbits whose bodies were still relatively soft, Xie Qingling took them out. She gently patted their heads and whispered, “Thank you for your service.”
Then she ignited their fur.
The smell of burning hair immediately filled the air.
The dead rabbits felt no pain, having lost all sensation.
Oblivious to the flames gradually consuming them, they simply followed Xie Qingling’s commands instinctively, avoiding flammable and explosive materials as they scattered in all directions.
They darted through every floor’s corridors, spreading the smell of burnt fur everywhere in the blink of an eye.
The small rabbits didn’t have much energy though, and after scrambling about for a while, they collapsed.
However, even if they only caused a moment of chaos, they had accomplished their mission.
The teachers and students in class had no idea what was happening, only able to smell a pungent odor as thick smoke spread through the teaching building.
It was…
A fire!
At that very moment, the fire alarm blared.
The wailing siren sounded like a death knell to everyone.
Students and teachers on the first and second floors reacted first, immediately evacuating the building.
To ensure no one was left behind, Xie Qingling headed to the west building.
The west building housed a broadcasting room that could connect to every classroom’s speakers, allowing announcements to reach everyone simultaneously.
When Xie Qingling pushed open the broadcasting room door, she found a male student on duty.
Hearing the noise, the male student turned and saw Xie Qingling. He frowned, “Classmate, this area is off-limits.”
“I just want to look around.” Xie Qingling smiled as she approached him. Before he could say another word, she raised her hand and knocked him unconscious with a single strike.
The male student: “…”
He had never encountered anything so absurd in his life!
Looking around was one thing, but why resort to violence?!
And how could such a seemingly delicate girl knock out a power forward from the school basketball team with one strike!
Before he could make sense of it, his consciousness faded.
Xie Qingling moved him aside, picked up the microphone, practiced a broadcast-style voice, and began speaking with complete seriousness.
“Emergency notice, emergency notice! Students, teachers, all personnel in this building, please pay attention! A fire has broken out in this teaching building. Safety hazards are currently being assessed. All students, teachers, and other personnel in class must evacuate the building within five minutes. When leaving, please do not push or shove to avoid stampedes. Emergency notice, emergency notice…”
The broadcast repeated three times.
People began streaming out of the teaching building.
Some ran with their hands over their heads, while others, despite the urgency, remembered to wet their clothes and cover their noses and mouths.
It seemed the students had participated in plenty of disaster drills.
Except for the teachers and students on the third and fourth floors conducting lab experiments who took longer to evacuate due to the time needed to remove and disinfect their protective gear everyone from other floors evacuated quickly.
After about three minutes, no one else emerged from the teaching building.
Xie Qingling had a clear picture of the situation.
She activated her earpiece and said to Ling Fang, “Department Head, everyone has been cleared from the teaching building.”
“Well done.”
Though unsure how Xie Qingling had managed it, now wasn’t the time for details.
Ling Fang said, “Deploy the Killing Field now to trap the spirits inside. Wait for our arrival before engaging.”
“Understood.”
Meanwhile.
Ling Fang was coordinating with other department members.
“Dai Xingyu, contact the Logistics Department to handle clearing the area, then provide support.”
Dai Xingyu: “Received.”
“Ye Anran, you’re closest to Xie Qingling’s school. Head over for backup first.”
Ye Anran: “Received.”
Ling Fang paused briefly before adding, “Shen Huaizhou, you’re responsible for controlling the field this time. Don’t let a single spirit escape the Killing Field.”
Shen Huaizhou: “Received.”
“Old Yu, come with me to provide backup.”
Yu Wei: “Copy that.”
“Alright,” Ling Fang said. “Move out.”
Scattered across different corners of Future City, those who heard these words simultaneously turned and headed in the same direction.
Xie Qingling hoisted the unconscious male student over her shoulder, thought for a moment, then directly opened the window and climbed out through it.
After running a considerable distance and determining he should be safe from the fallout, Xie Qingling placed the male student beside a flower bed, laying him down properly before turning back to rush toward the teaching building.
About five minutes had passed by now.
Xie Qingling took out the clay statue.
“Through your eyes, witness what I witness.”
The Ksitigarbha clay statue instantly emitted a faint, brilliant light. Wherever the light passed, flowing radiance spread out, unfolding the Killing Field.
This was now the Carrion Ghoul’s prison.
Instead of acting recklessly, Xie Qingling followed Ling Fang’s instructions and obediently waited at the entrance of the teaching building.
The employee handbook stated that compliance was an important metric for evaluating an excellent employee.
Although Ling Fang’s overly cautious nature felt quite troublesome to Xie Qingling, she had always been someone who strove for perfection. So for this internship job, she demanded nothing less than her best from herself.
After a while, Xie Qingling’s communicator buzzed. Ye Anran contacted her: “Don’t be afraid, sweetie. Big sister is coming to back you up right away. Six minutes, just wait six more minutes. I’ll be there soon.”
Even though Xie Qingling had single-handedly eliminated a Rakshasa Ghost before, this time there was more than one ghost.
The unknown number posed a significant risk.
An inexperienced newcomer could easily find themselves in danger.
Faced with the flesh and blood of an Innate Spirit, ghosts would go mad.
Touched by their protective concern for the new recruit, Xie Qingling felt a wave of emotion.
However…
She wasn’t really that scared.
After stepping into this world, all her timidity had been frightened out of her by the Mountain Goblin and the Rakshasa Ghost.
Compared to the beginning, Xie Qingling now possessed far more reliance and weapons.
The current Xie Qingling had regained the steely nerves that allowed her to remain expressionless even during her first visit to the dissection room.
“Okay,” Xie Qingling said. “I’ll wait for you at the teaching building entrance.”
Ye Anran accelerated sharply. Contrary to her gentle tone through the headset, her face was now stern as she rode her heavy motorcycle, speeding like the wind straight toward Xie Qingling’s school.
The traffic department, having received notification, coordinated along the route, keeping all lights green as everyone made way for Ye Anran.
Standing at the entrance and keeping track of time, Xie Qingling suddenly heard a tremendous crash from above the sound of shattering glass.
The noise came from the fourth floor of the west building. If she remembered correctly, that direction was…
The specimen room.
The specimen room housed laboratory specimens glass containers filled with formaldehyde solution preserving various experimental subjects.
A specimen had been shattered.
Her heart skipped a beat as a bad premonition struck her.
Hesitating briefly, she tightened her grip on the pistol and ran into the teaching building, heading straight for the fourth floor of the west wing.
Before she could get close, the sound of chewing reached her from afar crunch, crunch, accompanied by crisp cracking noises, as if animal bones were being snapped.
The eerie sound sent chills down one’s spine. Even someone as bold as Xie Qingling couldn’t help but darken her expression.
Her face grim, she pushed open the door to the specimen room…
Inside, chaos reigned.
Five specimen jars had been shattered, their formaldehyde contents spilled all over the floor.
The specimens from the jars were now being held in the hands of ghosts, being gnawed and devoured.
It was a gruesome sight mangled flesh and blood everywhere.
One, two, three, four…
There were four ghosts in the specimen room, each only half the height of a person. Their skin was a bluish-black color, with a rotting texture, emitting a thick, foul stench.
They appeared to have no heads their necks were just a mass of fused flesh, with no visible facial features except for a single mouth, currently “eating.”
Xie Qingling’s scalp crawled. Her grip on the pistol tightened, followed by a surge of intense anger rushing to her head.
The recently awakened Carrion Ghouls, tormented by hunger, searched everywhere but could not find their proper feast. In this murky, unfamiliar world, the dead were no longer buried. Unable to compete with the flame-spewing furnaces for food, the Carrion Ghouls turned their attention to these long-dead yet well-preserved humans.
Enjoy, devour this is the delicious feast belonging to the Carrion Ghouls.
“Director,” Xie Qingling activated her earpiece, “I’m afraid I’ll have to move ahead of schedule.”
“The Carrion Ghouls’ target isn’t living humans.”
“It’s the Cadaver Teachers.”
