Chapter 11

Xie Qingling had originally thought that with so many events crammed into a single night, she was destined for a sleepless evening.

Yet to her surprise, after returning to the dorm and settling Dong Jia in, she collapsed into bed and slept deeply and soundly, not even dreaming.

Even she found her own adaptability and resilience somewhat unbelievable.

It was rare for Xie Qingling to sleep so long and so heavily.

The ample rest rejuvenated her exhausted body and strained mind. It wasn’t until noon the next day that she slowly awoke.

By then, the others were already eating lunch.

The first thing Xie Qingling did upon opening her eyes was look for Dong Jia.

Dong Jia was already awake, holding a lunchbox while huddled with Jiang Lvlv, both examining some document.

The air was filled with the aroma of food.

Hearing Xie Qingling get up, Jiang Lvlv pointed without turning her head to a lunchbox beside her: “There, your portion. I got one for you too. Wash up quickly and come eat before it gets cold.”

“I really don’t get you two. I was the one who went drinking yesterday, but you both slept like logs even more heavily than me, the drunk one. You little piggies would’ve starved without your great caretaker here.”

Dong Jia retorted indignantly: “I didn’t wake up that late! I was up a whole hour earlier than Qingling! You don’t know what I went through last night ”

Her voice abruptly cut off. She frowned, seeming to struggle to recall something, but gave up after just two seconds.

“You don’t know how hard I practiced dancing yesterday! So what if I slept in a bit!” Dong Jia said.

She appeared completely normal, even radiant from quality sleep, her protesting voice full of energy.

Just as Ling Fang had said, all traces of last night’s events had completely vanished from Dong Jia’s memory.

Dong Jia took a bite of crispy fried pork and mumbled: “But it’s lucky the university activity center is closed for three days of repairs. Dance team training was canceled, otherwise I’d be late. What a relief.”

“Wow, I actually lived to see this day? That rundown university activity center that’s been standing for who knows how many years is finally getting repairs? I thought they’d wait until after we graduated.”

“Maybe the school finally grew a conscience.”

The two took turns complaining.

Xie Qingling didn’t join their discussion, but understood inwardly.

This must be the work of the so-called “Logistics Department.”

Though she didn’t know what methods they’d used to coordinate with the school administration, the practical result was that everything had been perfectly concealed.

On the surface, all was calm as if nothing had happened. No one on campus was discussing the incident excessively.

To other students, this was just an ordinary case of “the school growing a conscience and repairing old building facilities.”

Smelling the meat aromas and listening to her roommates’ complaints, Xie Qingling suddenly grinned foolishly.

She never imagined she’d one day derive such profound satisfaction and happiness from these trivial, mundane daily routines.
When immersed in these ordinary days, one never realizes how precious they are. But now, with half a step already into that bizarre and fantastical world, Xie Qingling began to find even the most mundane routines endearing.

At least she didn’t have to worry about dying for no reason.

Xie Qingling shook her head inwardly, dismissing these thoughts. She quickly finished washing up and had a meal.

By now, her body and spirit had fully recovered.

The Innate Spirit was truly remarkable.

Her dislocated wrist and the cut on her palm no longer bothered her.

It felt as if it had all been a dream.

Just then, the ruby on her bracelet flashed with a red light.

Sensing something, she opened her communicator and saw a message from Ling Fang.

Code Zero: Come find me.

Attached below was an address: 221 Central Street, Future City.

Future City was the central district of Xie Qingling’s city, boasting the best resources in healthcare, education, and every other aspect transportation was also very convenient.

Xie Qingling calculated that if she left now, she could still make it back today. She immediately replied to the message, made up an excuse, and headed out.

Amid the bustling traffic of Central Street stood a three-story Western-style villa.

It sat there quietly, with an old-fashioned style full of a sense of history, feeling out of place compared to the noisy modern city around it.

If she remembered correctly, this standalone building was an antique structure left over from some bygone era.

Before, Xie Qingling and her classmates had passed by its entrance more than once, assuming it was some wealthy family’s ancestral property or had been left vacant.

Unexpectedly, it turned out to be the office of Ling Fang’s department.

The villa’s entrance featured a retro semi-circular archway, with a heavy black ebony door left slightly ajar. Three steps led up to it, with no security guards or doormen in sight.

However, on either side of the steps stood two stone statues. Based on Xie Qingling’s limited knowledge of traditional mythology, they appeared to be qilins, placed there to guard the property.

Xie Qingling took a deep breath and walked inside.

Past the entrance, the first thing she saw was a massive entry screen, styled like an ancient silk painting. Though slightly faded and mottled with age, it clearly depicted two snakes with their tails entwined.

This screen blocked prying eyes from outside. Only by walking further in could one see the tall, bright main hall.

One side of the hall featured a huge floor-to-ceiling window, with sunlight streaming in and spilling across a long conference table placed in the room.

At that moment, Ling Fang was sitting at the head of the conference table, watching her.

Xie Qingling took another deep breath, walked over, and said, “Hello.”

“Please, have a seat,” Ling Fang stood up, gesturing for Xie Qingling to take the empty seat beside him before sitting down again.

“Before you formally decide to join us, there are a few things I need to make clear to you.”

Ling Fang’s expression was serious, his eyes full of authority. “You should understand that in our department, many matters must be kept confidential. Sometimes, we even have to resort to unconventional means to control the flow of information, ensuring maximum security.”
Xie Qingling nodded. “I understand.”
“No, it’s probably even more complicated than you imagine. Keep listening. When I say ‘safety,’ I’m not just referring to our safety as operatives, but also the safety of the general public.”

“Those entities imperceptible to ordinary people feed on fear. Any negative emotions that arise will strengthen their power. Humans are social creatures a single pebble dropped into a lake can create large ripples. The fear of one individual can potentially develop into collective fear. Therefore, to prevent order from descending into chaos, we directly employ methods of intercepting source information to restrict their growth.”

“Whether it’s Enjoying Incense Offerings or harvesting faith, ultimately these are just means of obtaining power, while fear and disaster serve as tools for certain entities. By not touching, not understanding, and remaining completely unaware of their existence, where there’s no knowledge there’s no fear thus we don’t provide them with nourishment. That’s why for every operation, our Logistics Department helps cover our tracks. Confidentiality is crucial for us, and for everyone.”

“Take a look at these first. Only if you can accept them will I continue.” Ling Fang pushed two paper documents toward Xie Qingling.

Looking down, Xie Qingling saw one was a confidentiality agreement, and the other was… a Life and Death Contract.

Her eyes widened slightly, her previously steady breath momentarily disrupted.

As a forensic medicine student, Xie Qingling not only studied medical courses but also minored in some law classes.

She could understand both contracts.

Leaving aside the confidentiality agreement for now, just this Life and Death Contract gave Xie Qingling some pause.

The so-called Life and Death Contract meant that if Xie Qingling suffered work-related injury or death during her employment, the department would bear no responsibility.

However, it also stipulated the death benefits and family compensation for deceased employees.

The amount was very high.

Xie Qingling said quietly, “Your screening threshold for staff is really strict.”

So strict it bordered on inhuman.

Even requiring a Life and Death Contract right from the start.

“About that, I told you from the beginning the standards are indeed strict.” Ling Fang smiled helplessly, slowly rubbing his leather gloves as he said, “But don’t reject it outright. While our conditions are stringent, the benefits are excellent too. As an intern, your base salary alone during the probation period is fifty thousand per month, with additional rewards for meritorious service. We treat talent exceptionally well.”

Fifty thousand was that a lot?

It was quite substantial.

Exchanged with one’s life.

Xie Qingling could no longer weigh which side held greater value.

She looked up at Ling Fang: “The pen?”

“…I didn’t expect you to be so decisive,” Ling Fang paused, surprised. “You’re really… quite different.”

“What’s so different about me?” Without another word, Xie Qingling took the pen and swiftly signed her name.

Even without signing this contract, if she continued drifting through the mundane world like this, she’d probably still die, right?

Her mere existence was a fatal temptation to those monsters coveting her flesh and blood, seeing her as food trouble would find her sooner or later.

Since death was inevitable either way, she might as well exchange her life for money.

Having grown up never holding more than five thousand yuan at once, what reason did she have to refuse a probationary monthly salary of fifty thousand?
Are Spirit Users powerful?

Even Spirit Users need to eat!

Xie Qingling looked at him. “Can we continue now?”

Ling Fang put away her two contracts, glanced down at them briefly, then raised his head. “Yes. Sign the employment contract, and you’ll become our official employee.”

“…Employment contract?”

“We are also a legitimate, regulated, and registered department, though most people aren’t aware of it,” Ling Fang said. “Starting tomorrow, you’ll need to report here for work. Ye Anran will help you get familiar with the workflow. Tomorrow will count as your first day of work. After three months, if you pass the assessment, you’ll become a full-time employee.”

Xie Qingling exclaimed in surprise, “So soon?”

“Of course, we’re severely understaffed,” Ling Fang replied while organizing the documents. “Including you as an intern and me, there are only six people in our entire department in this city. The others are all out on assignments right now.”

Xie Qingling: “…”

Six people.

So few.

She suddenly felt like she had been tricked into boarding a pirate ship.

Xie Qingling could already envision the endless overtime work awaiting her in the future.

After putting away Xie Qingling’s contracts, Ling Fang pulled out a thumb-sized glass bottle from his pocket.

Inside the bottle was a silvery-white liquid that resembled powder yet flowed like a fluid.

He placed the small bottle on the table. Sunlight streaming through the window refracted onto the silver liquid, creating a radiant glow that seemed otherworldly.

Dazzling and mesmerizing.

He pushed the bottle toward Xie Qingling. “Alright, next I’ll explain how to receive the Godly Blessing.”
