Chapter 104
“Mars Offending the Stars!”
An Operations Department member shot down a ghoul with an arrow. Tang Yuanxiao immediately ignited a massive fireball, enveloping the creature. Flames instantly devoured the ghoul’s entire body.
In the blink of an eye, not even ashes remained of the ghoul.
Working in coordination with other team members, Tang Yuanxiao’s path of clearing monsters proceeded with remarkable smoothness.
After being thrown to the periphery by the giant, he had joined the charge with others, attempting to break through the defensive line formed by ghouls and confront the giant once more.
But…
Slow. Too slow.
He hadn’t come here to deal with minor fiends.
As a member of the Third Action Team in the Operations Department, Tang Yuanxiao was considered a core operative.
He should be at the heart of the battlefield, locked in combat with members of Eleven Sides, not trapped here by swarms of minor ghouls with no escape.
Tang Yuanxiao still remained considerably distant from the giant, while the ghouls before him seemed endless, inexhaustible no matter how many he slaughtered.
Frustration began to gnaw at him.
Faster. He needed to move faster.
If they couldn’t eliminate those two Eleven Sides members promptly, Old Royal City would suffer even greater casualties.
“Flowing Fire!” Tang Yuanxiao drove a fiery fist into the gaping maw of a ghoul, his strikes growing increasingly ruthless.
Just then, Tang Yuanxiao heard a tremendous crash.
The giant that had been wreaking havoc moments ago suddenly collapsed to the ground.
Tang Yuanxiao froze momentarily before surging with exhilaration.
Reinforcements from other Operations Department teams must have arrived!
Whoever could dispatch that giant so swiftly was likely a core member from another action team.
Bolstered by this confidence, Tang Yuanxiao cast his gaze toward the battlefield’s center and spotted a dark figure leaping and darting about.
Not enough. Still not enough. Too few people.
These two Eleven Sides members were exceptionally troublesome. With only one additional operative from other teams, they probably still couldn’t hold them off.
The weight on his shoulders remained heavy. Tang Yuanxiao’s expression darkened as he fought with renewed ferocity, pushing forward relentlessly to join the central fray faster and combine forces to eliminate the two Eleven Sides members.
As his path cleared substantially, he drew increasingly closer to the giant.
When he finally reached the battlefield’s epicenter and took in the scene, he paused in astonishment.
Because the person currently controlling the battlefield’s center wasn’t any Operations Department member he recognized. Though not entirely unfamiliar – he had just seen them earlier.
It was those two women wearing dresses.
The towering giant now lay prone on the ground, flopping about like a frog, devoid of any other means of attack.
The tall beauty in the black dress continuously produced throwing knives from various parts of her body, hurling them at the giant.
The giant’s back and face were already densely studded with knife handles – enough to trigger trypophobia at a glance.
Though the giant still moved, the tall beauty in the black dress seemed to be leading him around like a dog on an invisible, intangible leash. Her controlling movements flowed with effortless grace, as if requiring minimal exertion.
And on the other side?
The dark, skinny man crouched on the giant’s shoulder now lay motionless in a pool of blood.
Xie Qingling had already sheathed her blade.
She slid the Blood Oath back into its scabbard and looked up, her eyes meeting Tang Yuanxiao’s.
She also took in his thoroughly disheveled appearance.
The two stared at each other wordlessly. Tang Yuanxiao’s lips moved slightly, but no words came out.
These two women who had seemed like troublesome liabilities – whom he had nearly abandoned midway – had actually defeated two members of the Eleven Sides single-handedly.
Xie Qingling broke the silence first.
“You’re late,” she said.
“The fight is over.”
Tang Yuanxiao: “…”
He knew.
He had seen.
Tang Yuanxiao was still reeling from shock.
Typically, the top ten scorers on the annual New Talent Ranking would be transferred to headquarters. This meant that each year’s most outstanding talents would gather at headquarters. The environment there accelerated their growth, so overall, the combat capabilities of headquarters’ action team members far surpassed those from regional city departments.
Tang Yuanxiao was accustomed to fighting alongside headquarters’ team members, while those from regional departments often slowed their aggressive assault pace and sometimes even required protection.
When he saw the giant defeated so quickly, Tang Yuanxiao had instinctively assumed core members of the action team had arrived as reinforcements. Never had he imagined… it would be these two.
Were regional cities this strong now?
In that flash of realization, countless thoughts raced through Tang Yuanxiao’s mind, stirring up turbulent waves in his heart.
Ignoring him, Xie Qingling walked over to the man lying in blood and picked up the wooden box containing the Queen Gu.
Inside, a plump white worm wriggled.
Xie Qingling dumped the worm onto the ground and crushed it under her foot.
As she did, the giant that had been lunging and leaping suddenly stiffened and stopped moving.
The giant collapsed limply to the ground, completely still.
Xie Qingling shouted into the air, “The child gu is on its back! Destroy the child gu!”
Hearing this, Shen Huaizhou formed a throwing knife in his hand. Focusing his gaze, he spotted a worm squirming rapidly beneath the giant’s charcoal-black skin, trying to break free.
His throwing knife shot out instantly, pinning the crawling worm precisely.
A faint, infant-like wail seemed to echo in their ears, but it vanished as quickly as it came.
It was over.
Xie Qingling tossed the wooden box aside and glanced down, spotting the pitch-black Yin Mountain Ghost Tablet.
This belonged to the Yin Mountain Sect.
Not knowing if it was still usable but adhering to her waste-not principle, she picked it up and tucked it into her belt.
With the two most troublesome Eleven Sides members eliminated, only some minor ghouls remained.
These lesser ghosts weren’t particularly dangerous, but they were numerous and persistent.
Tang Yuanxiao had already cleared many ghouls along the way, leaving few combat-capable ones remaining on the field.
With the Eleven Sides’ interference gone, the remaining cleanup work became straightforward.
Tang Yuanxiao set fires while simultaneously casting frequent glances at Xie Qingling and Shen Huaizhou, looking as though he had much to say.
Neither Xie Qingling nor Shen Huaizhou paid him any mind, not even sparing him a glance as they continued joining the battle to cleanse the ghouls.
About half an hour later, all the ghouls in East District’s Twelfth Street had been eliminated.
When Xie Qingling came to a standstill, her gaze swept over the street’s devastation scattered ghoul corpses, severed limbs, and other debris her eyes filled with complex emotions.
The Soul Return Technique she had cast had already expired.
When she sensed the Spirit within her nearing depletion, she had withdrawn her Mystical Power. The girl who had been under the Soul Return Technique collapsed back to the ground, also covered in bloodstains.
Xie Qingling searched for a while before locating the girl’s body amidst the wreckage.
The girl still tightly gripped the Zi Wu Yuan Yang Yue daggers, lying on her back with eyes fixed skyward, yet devoid of any light.
Xie Qingling knelt down and gently closed the girl’s eyelids with her hand. “Rest in peace.”
She laid the girl flat on the ground, where she appeared as if merely asleep.
After completing these actions, Xie Qingling returned to Shen Huaizhou’s side.
By now, Xie Qingling was thoroughly disheveled and stained with blood.
Shen Huaizhou, in contrast, remained relatively unscathed aside from slightly rumpled clothing, he was quite clean. His role had primarily been to assist Xie Qingling in controlling the ghouls, seldom requiring direct engagement. Even when he did strike, it was from a distance, so the splattering blood never reached him.
Xie Qingling glanced at him enviously and said, “It’s a pity my aim isn’t good enough. Otherwise, I’d practice your throwing knives able to take down enemies from afar, both convenient and elegant.”
“You’re better as you are,” Shen Huaizhou replied. “Charging in with a blade, drawing blood with one strike and taking heads with the next it strikes more fear into opponents and carries greater imposing presence.”
Xie Qingling: “…”
Don’t make her sound like some ruthless, cold-blooded demon.
While contacting the Logistics Department to handle cleanup, Tang Yuanxiao kept watching the two of them.
So it was one man and one woman.
Tang Yuanxiao’s feelings grew even more complicated.
After finishing his tasks, Tang Yuanxiao approached and asked, “Which city are you from?”
Xie Qingling straightened up, maintaining a superficially respectful demeanor toward her superior, and replied courteously, “We’re from an insignificant little place no need to sully your ears with its name.”
Shen Huaizhou nodded in agreement. “Indeed. A small, unknown place, hardly worth mentioning.”
“…” Tang Yuanxiao took a deep breath.
After composing his expression, Tang Yuanxiao pressed further, “Who is the minister in charge of managing you?”
Xie Qingling answered, “We dare not speak our minister’s name aloud.”
Shen Huaizhou nodded again. “Indeed, we dare not.Tang Yuanxiao’s mouth corner already began to twitch.
He studied the seemingly innocent Xie Qingling carefully, then glanced at the aloof and unapproachable Shen Huaizhou, finally resolving himself.
“I admit…” Tang Yuanxiao paused, lowering his pride, “I admit I spoke a bit too loudly earlier.”
“Your abilities are impressive. I’d like to know which city you’re from.”
“Talents as outstanding as you should come to headquarters. There’s a bigger stage here that won’t bury your capabilities.”
Tang Yuanxiao had finally grasped the right way to communicate with these two.
Shen Huaizhou remained silent as ever, clearly having delegated all speaking rights to Xie Qingling.
Xie Qingling said, “We need to consult our department head about this matter first.”
Hearing this, Tang Yuanxiao didn’t press further. After all, there would be plenty of time ahead. Since they were local members here for support, they wouldn’t be leaving anytime soon.
He continued coordinating with Logistics Department personnel to handle follow-up matters.
Xie Qingling and Shen Huaizhou stood by the ruined street, watching as Logistics Department members gradually arrived. They observed them carrying stretchers to transport the bodies of three department members.
Three deaths in one battle.
And this was just the fighting in one single district.
Without needing to specifically inquire about casualty numbers, they knew Old Royal City must have lost more than just these three people today.
Xie Qingling sighed deeply, “Future City is really so peaceful…”
“Yeah.”
“Do you have any thoughts about staying at headquarters?” Xie Qingling asked.
“Not sure.”
Previously it was because he found this place too crowded and noisy, now it was uncertainty.
It seemed Shen Huaizhou’s perspective had undergone some changes, Xie Qingling thought.
As the two were reflecting, blue dots suddenly lit up on their earpieces.
Ling Fang, having just finished the department heads meeting, was contacting his two troublesome team members.
“Where are you two?”
Xie Qingling: “…”
Shen Huaizhou: “…”
They had completely forgotten about this.
