Chapter 103

Seven identical figures shifted positions in an instant, closing in on the man from all directions. Their initial formation was already disorienting enough to distinguish reality from illusion, and now their irregular movements during the assault made it utterly impossible to determine which one was truly her.

The man knew he had fallen into a trap. Among these seven figures, only one must be real the rest were mere illusions.

Yet…

Knowing this alone was useless; he still couldn’t identify her.

Her speed was blistering, leaving him only seconds to think.

Was it the one on the left?

Or… the one on the right?

What about the center?

Moreover, did only the true body possess offensive capability, or could the other illusions attack as well?

Everything was shrouded in a haze of uncertainty. Sweat trickled unconsciously down the man’s forehead, dripping into his bewildered eyes and stinging with acidic intensity.

“By the decree of the Old Ancestor of Yin Mountain Spring Breeze Transforms into Rain!” In a flash, he unleashed four spells.

The spells formed a tight protective barrier around him, unleashing a dense curtain of water-arrows that radiated outward from his position.

Die, all of you.

Whether real or illusory, under such concentrated assault, one of them was bound to reveal a flaw.

Clutching the Five Calamities Needle covertly, the man widened his eyes, scrutinizing the seven identical illusions. He hoped to deduce the true body by observing their reactions upon being struck.

His hopes were swiftly dashed.

Whether illusion or reality, each figure pressed forward relentlessly after being hit, utterly disregarding the minor injuries.

All seven forms radiated a chilling, murderous intent, their resolute and sharp gazes fixated on a single purpose to charge ahead and claim his life!

The killing intent washed over him like a tidal wave.

Panic seized the man, but it was too late to escape.

“Ah ”

All seven raised their hands simultaneously, brandishing pale bone-blades as they lunged at him.

A sharp pain erupted as a ghastly wound, deep enough to expose bone, was carved into his back.

The gash lay directly over his spine, the blade slicing through thin layers of flesh and muscle, aiming straight for the vertebral column.

The man grunted in agony. Reacting swiftly, he deduced that since the attack came from behind, the true body must be positioned there. He immediately curled forward, rolling several paces away to evade follow-up strikes, leaving a trail of blood in his wake.

What a pity just a bit closer, and she could have severed his spine, cutting through the spinal cord. Xie Qingling thought.

“You you ” The man staggered to his feet, clearly severely injured.

Shen Huaizhou’s Illusion had shattered the moment Xie Qingling launched her attack.

Now standing before the man in her true form, she revealed her original appearance.

Water-arrows had pierced her torso, arms, and legs, but upon impact, they dissolved back into water, leaving no physical wounds only tattered clothing as evidence of the assault.

Of the seven figures, only one remained. The man’s eyes burned with venomous fury as he glared at the sole survivor, his rage so palpable it seemed capable of reducing Xie Qingling to ashes.

He touched the wound on his back and drew back a hand covered in blood. The man’s eyebrows twitched involuntarily. “Well done! You’ve actually forced me to this extent! Well done, truly well done!”

No one had ever managed to injure him this severely!

Xie Qingling didn’t respond, merely adjusting her grip on the blade as she prepared for the next round of attack.

While speaking, the man retrieved another pitch-black token from his robes.

One side of the token was carved with spells, while the other bore the ferocious face of a ghost.

This token was a supreme treasure of Yin Mountain, requiring the collection of wandering souls unwilling to reincarnate, then refined in burial grounds to absorb sufficient Yin energy before it could summon Yin Masters. If he used this token today, who knew how long it would take to refine another batch of Yin Masters of similar scale.

He hadn’t planned to use it, but if he didn’t bring it out now, he might not leave this place alive today.

A flicker of reluctance passed through the man’s eyes, but he quickly raised the token high. “State your name! My Yin Mountain Ghost Tablet doesn’t strike down nameless foes.”

This woman was powerful – if he refined her into a ghost general, the power of his Yin Mountain Ghost Tablet would increase dramatically! At this thought, he no longer felt distressed about using his treasure.

“Once this token is activated, your death is certain. State your final words! After you die, I will refine you into my ghost general to command the Yin Masters and serve my purposes.”

“Unnecessary,” Xie Qingling said. “Final words… I probably won’t need them.” She advanced with her blade.

“Arrogant boasting!”

This was the first time he’d encountered someone more arrogant than himself. The man’s face turned green with rage as he immediately tossed the token into the air, simultaneously chanting incantations.

“I invoke the decree of the Old Ancestor of Yin Mountain Yin Mountain Ghost Tablet!” The token hovered mid-air, spinning several times before releasing streams of black energy tinged with red that transformed into cloaked, faceless figures.

One, two, three, four…

Fifty-plus tall black humanoid figures now stood surrounding the man front and back, clustering around him with the subservient posture of attendants, forming an impenetrable barrier that prevented Xie Qingling from approaching.

But when they collectively turned their dark, hollow faces toward Xie Qingling, it was like gazing into countless abyssal cold pools, radiating chilling intent.

The Yin Masters released from the Yin Mountain Ghost Tablet emanated waves of terrifying, dread-inspiring aura. Having frequently dealt with dead souls and spirits, Xie Qingling was quite familiar with this – it was the cold energy belonging to the dead.

These were… spirits?

A spirit army of over fifty refined by the Yin Mountain Sect?

She was really…

So scared.

Xie Qingling nearly couldn’t suppress her laughter.

She had thought there would be another tough battle ahead, but it seemed the fight could end quickly now, Xie Qingling mused.

“Let’s see how long your arrogance lasts!” The man revealed a sinister smile as he commanded the Yin Masters: “Go, kill this woman! Kill everyone, slaughter them all!”

The Yin Masters obeyed. The next moment, each transformed into swift predators, darting toward Xie Qingling with such speed they left only black afterimages.

Xie Qingling remained motionless, making no move to evade or counterattack. She merely tapped her toe lightly and called out: “Soul Return!”

Her Mystical Power emanated from within herself, rippling outward like waves.

Soon, these ripples enveloped the fifty-plus shadowy figures.

The Yin Masters’ movements halted.

They hovered mid-air, their bodies torn between two completely different energies pulling them in opposite directions.

On one side was the command of the Yin Mountain Ghost Tablet their master.

On the other was a gentle yet profoundly vast energy, thread by thread infiltrating their forms, showing them the true path to the afterlife, compelling them to unconsciously follow its guidance.

The two conflicting energies wrestled within the Yin Masters’ bodies until Xie Qingling’s Soul Return Technique gained the upper hand.

The Yin Masters descended to the ground, landing neatly before Xie Qingling. Their billowing cloaks rose around her, forming an impenetrable barrier.

It remained a solid wall of bodies, but the one being protected had changed.

The man’s face abruptly paled, his eyes wide with disbelief as he stared at the scene before him.

Why weren’t they attacking the woman?

Why were they shielding her instead?

He was clearly the master of the Yin Mountain Ghost Tablet, the commander who should be controlling the Yin Masters!

Had these Yin Masters gone mad? Why had they suddenly switched allegiance?

But Yin Masters couldn’t betray they weren’t human, merely puppets on strings. Soulless entities that could only obey their master’s commands.

Seeing the man’s expression twisted with confusion, bewilderment, and rising fury a slow, mocking smile curved Xie Qingling’s lips.

“Go, kill that man,” Xie Qingling issued her own command.

The Yin Masters turned as one, their featureless faces now directed toward the dark, thin man. They transformed into streaks of black shadows, their fifty-plus forms moving simultaneously like attacking tigers. Their dark energy coalesced into billowing black cloaks that spread through the air like the wings of a giant roc.

And this great roc was now poised to strike its own master.

Madness, absolute madness!

This woman was truly sinister.

To break his spell… such a person couldn’t be allowed to live. Otherwise, his Yin Mountain Ghost Tablet would be useless from now on.

She must not survive.

The man began chanting incantations, shouting frantically: “By the decree of the Old Ancestor of Yin Mountain Yin Mountain Ghost Tablet!”

He poured more energy into the Yin Mountain Ghost Tablet, desperately trying to reestablish his connection with the Yin Masters.

The Yin Mountain Ghost Tablet spun wildly in the air, continuously releasing dark crimson energy currents.

The energy streams penetrated the Yin Masters’ bodies, the familiar scent of their master flowing through their limbs and bones. Within the Yin Masters, this energy began a new battle for control against the Soul Return Technique.

Reluctantly, the Yin Masters halted again.

They stood between Xie Qingling and the man, their forward momentum slowing.

After the dark, thin man’s frantic efforts to increase his power, the energy of the Yin Mountain Ghost Tablet finally overwhelmed the Mystical Power of the Soul Return Technique. The man barely managed to reclaim control over the Yin Masters.

“Kill that woman!” the man snarled his command.

The Yin Masters obeyed his order, turning once more to charge toward Xie Qingling.

But before they could take action, Xie Qingling activated her Soul Return Technique again.

“Soul Return!”

It came again that gentle yet powerful energy once more invaded the Yin Master’s body. This energy bypassed the master’s commands directly, seizing control of the Yin Master’s actions.

“Kill him,” Xie Qingling pointed at the man and issued the command again.

The man, his face ashen, once more ordered the Yin Mountain Ghost Tablet to obey: “By the decree of the Old Ancestor of Yin Mountain ”

“Soul Return!”

“By the decree of the Old Ancestor of Yin Mountain!”

“Soul Return!”

“By the decree of the Old Ancestor of Yin Mountain ”

“Soul Return!”

“By the decree of the Old Ancestor of Yin Mountain ”

…

The two engaged in this back-and-forth struggle, their faces growing increasingly pale.

Repeatedly using the Soul Return technique rapidly depleted the “Spirit” within Xie Qingling’s body. She could already feel her energy nearing exhaustion.

The man opposite her wasn’t faring any better.

Already injured, and forced to match Xie Qingling’s frantic escalation, the Yin Mountain Ghost Tablet had nearly drained all his energy. His originally dark face was now ghastly pale.

But unexpectedly, the first to fall wasn’t either of them.

The first to collapse was the Yin Master.

When two tigers fight, the small ghost suffers.

Their energy was utterly depleted in the repeated struggles for control, the black figure dissipating into dark smoke and returning to the ghost tablet.

Seeing the man standing alone again, Xie Qingling breathed a sigh of relief.

A brilliant smile spread across her face as she raised the Blood Oath and said, “Alright, now it’s your turn to think of your last words.”

The next moment, her figure vanished from the man’s sight, disappearing into thin air.
