Chapter 102

The Soul Return Technique commenced.

Xie Qingling employed the Soul Return Technique on the recently deceased girl.

The spirits that had just departed returned one by one to their original bodies.

Perfectly aligned, utterly familiar.

In mere moments, the girl who had lost all signs of life reopened her eyes.

Though her eyes were pitch black compared to a living person’s, no longer perceiving light, and her limbs moved stiffly, somewhat like a marionette on strings, she rose from the pool of blood. Her muscles seemed to retain the memory of her former life as she stood quietly and solemnly beside Xie Qingling, awaiting her command.

“Take up your weapon and fight like a warrior once more,” Xie Qingling said.

Upon hearing Xie Qingling’s words, the girl picked up her Midday Mandarin Duck Halberds, gripping them tightly in her hands.

As they spoke, a long-tongued Ghoul charged toward them. The girl raised her halberds and struck at the Ghoul head-on.

The long tongue of the Ghoul wrapped around her neck, tightening its grip, yet she remained completely unaware feeling no pain, no suffocation only focused on hacking away until the long-tongued Ghoul was utterly vanquished.

“Guard me!” Xie Qingling commanded before charging forward again.

Shen Huaizhou immediately followed, while the deceased girl remained by their side, clearing obstacles from their path, cutting through thorns and thistles for them, and slaying all approaching Ghouls beneath her halberds.

She had become extraordinarily fierce, transforming into a brave and fearless warrior, for she no longer felt pain or fear.

When a Ghoul’s teeth pierced her throat, she tore it away; when a Ghoul’s hand penetrated her abdomen, she severed the hand and continued her charge.

Forward, ever forward to protect, to eradicate every last one of these troublesome Ghouls.

With her frail frame, the girl shielded Xie Qingling from wave after wave of Ghoul attacks. Her stature was not imposing, yet she stood like an indestructible shield, erecting a formidable wall.

With her assistance, Xie Qingling’s advance accelerated significantly.

Xie Qingling was nearly at the giant’s feet.

She glanced at the giant, whose steps left deep imprints on the floor, then at the man crouched on its shoulder. Several different assault strategies flashed through her mind.

“To capture the enemy, first capture their leader. Shen Huaizhou, send me up,” Xie Qingling said, slowing her pace.

Upon hearing this, Shen Huaizhou surged forward, positioning himself in front of Xie Qingling, then reached a hand back toward her.

Xie Qingling extended her hand, and Shen Huaizhou seized her wrist, spinning around and using the momentum to hurl her into the air.

Her black skirt billowed in the wind, swiftly sweeping past the giant’s eyes like a fluttering black butterfly.

The giant roared, thrusting out its thick, fleshy hand to seize this foolhardy mortal, crush her, then slam her to the ground and trample her to pieces.

But then…

“Vision Obscuring.”

As Shen Huaizhou’s words fell, the giant suddenly lost its sight, plunged into utter darkness.

It could see nothing, as if shrouded by a vast skirt the world now devoid of light and shadow.

Xie Qingling stomped on the giant’s hand and propelled herself upward, targeting the man crouched on the giant’s shoulder.

Holding twin blades crossed before her in a stance both defensive and offensive, her dark eyes fixed intently on the gaunt, shadowy figure. In Xie Qingling’s eyes, he was already a dead man.

“Hmph!” The dark-skinned man snorted coldly, then produced a yellow spell and hurled it directly at Xie Qingling.

“By the decree of the Old Ancestor of Yin Mountain Spring Breeze Transforms into Rain!”

The wind around them suddenly turned bitingly cold, the air seeming to freeze. In the next instant, sharp water arrows shot toward Xie Qingling.

The close range made it impossible for Xie Qingling to avoid being grazed by the water arrows, leaving several cuts on her arm. Blood instantly spurted out. Gritting her teeth against the pain, she raised Blood Oath to block, but the relentless barrage of water arrows forced her to halt her assault, nearly knocking her out of the air.

Xie Qingling twisted sideways, evading three water arrows flying straight at her. By then, the spell’s power had nearly dissipated.

At this critical moment, the gaunt man pulled out three thick, long Silver Needles and drove them forcefully into the giant’s crown.

The giant let out a roar as the darkness faded from its eyes, restoring its vision.

These three needles had forcibly broken Shen Huaizhou’s Illusion.

[Combining Maoshan Daoist arts with sorcery, the Yin Mountain Sect originated from Daoism yet stands apart, dwelling in desolate wilderness and solitary graves, practicing ghostly arts. They employ methods such as bewitchment, soul manipulation, spirit driving, and soul locking to command and control the dead.]

[Using yellow paper and black ink instead of cinnabar, the Yin Mountain Sect venerates the Master of Yin Mountain, harnessing legions of ghosts, capturing souls, and widely practicing the ghostly path.]

[The Yin Mountain Sect, neither wholly good nor evil, has now produced a traitor. He plunged the sect’s ancestral Five Misfortune Needles once used to heal and save lives into a mass of corrupt, sinful flesh. The needles, now tainted with bloody rust, have become tools of wickedness.]

Seeing Xie Qingling right under his nose and so close, the giant rejoiced and reached out with a massive rounded hand to grab her.

With a sidelong glance, Xie Qingling immediately dropped straight down, evading the giant’s grasp.

She landed beside the giant’s foot, rolled along the ground, and thrust Blood Oath into its ankle. Though the giant was massive and heavily padded with fat, no matter its size, the ankle joint lacked muscular protection.

At the ankle, there were only fascia and ligaments.

Thus, ankles were always prone to sprains and strains.

Xie Qingling’s blade easily pierced the giant’s ankle. With a fierce slash, Blood Oath tore a gaping wound, revealing the pure white bone beneath.

With its ankle joint no longer stable, the giant lost its balance and toppled backward.

The over-five-meter-tall body tilted and collapsed, unable to stand upright again.

The man on its shoulder fumed, cursing, “Useless!”

He pulled out the Five Misfortune Needles again, intending to stimulate the giant further. But without ligaments in the ankle, no amount of stimulation could make a person with an unstable foot stand again.

Seeing Xie Qingling stepping on the giant’s knee, ready to charge once more, the man on its shoulder decisively abandoned the giant as his mount and fled into the distance.

Xie Qingling’s lunge missed its mark, forcing her to land back on the ground.

Shen Huaizhou drew two throwing knives from his sleeve and hurled them straight at the giant’s eyes, once again completely robbing him of his vision.

Plunged back into darkness, the giant could see nothing.

The pain was so unbearable he wished he could gouge out his own eyeballs to relieve the agony and blackness.

Seeing this, Xie Qingling temporarily abandoned her pursuit of the dark, skinny man and turned back to join Shen Huaizhou in coordinated attacks against the giant.

She leaped from the ground, reaching the height of the reclining giant. Placing one hand on his shoulder for support, she flipped sideways.

Xie Qingling evaded the giant’s clumsy, childlike, uncoordinated hands while simultaneously sweeping her left blade horizontally. As she flipped past, she slit the giant’s throat.

Green blood immediately gushed forth, splattering across Xie Qingling’s face and clothes.

The giant’s blood was green.

It appeared thick like plant sap but carried the distinct metallic scent of blood.

Xie Qingling kicked off the giant’s shoulder to propel herself backward, landing beside Shen Huaizhou.

With a heavy thud, the massive giant collapsed limply to the ground, splattering blood everywhere.

Green blood pooled across the earth.

Dead.

Xie Qingling wiped the filthy blood from her face and raised Blood Oath toward the dark, skinny man.

He stood on a tree branch, his slender body barely weighing down the canopy.

The dark, skinny man stared back at her.

His small, bean-sized black eyes gleamed like a raven’s, fixed intently on Xie Qingling as if she were rotting carrion waiting to be devoured.

“You broke my puppet! You’ll pay for this!” the man shouted, jumping down from the tree.

He produced a black wooden box containing a white, writhing worm.

The worm lay motionless until the man bit his finger and dripped blood into the box. Instantly, the white worm stirred like a starved wolf catching the scent of prey.

“Medicine Slave, rise!” the man commanded.

To their astonishment, the lifeless giant on the ground stirred and slowly rose to its feet!

Xie Qingling and Shen Huaizhou paled.

It had…

come back to life.

No perhaps this colossal giant had never been among the “living” to begin with.

Though the giant could no longer stand upright, it remained a formidable obstacle.

It crouched on all fours like a frog, its massive frame still towering even when prone.

With a powerful kick of its hind legs, it launched itself forward.

Its enormous body blotted out the sky, threatening to crush Xie Qingling and Shen Huaizhou beneath it.

“Evade now!” Xie Qingling yelled, executing a low slide to dart away from the giant’s assault.

[The Herb Spirit Woman had turned the Medicine Slave into a vessel for gu worms. She fed her body to the Herb Spirit, while the Medicine Slave fed his to the gu worms.]

[The Medicine Slave nurtured offspring gu in his belly. Hearing the Queen Gu’s call, the offspring gu stirred back to life. The symbiotic yin-yang mother-offspring gu shared one fate if the gu perish, so does the host; if the gu live, the host survives.]

So that was it.

This giant was no longer human.

He was a vessel.

They were vessels for the Gu worms.

As long as the Gu worms remained alive, the giant would not die.

To kill the giant, one must first kill the Gu worms.

The lesser Gu worms were on the giant, while the Queen Gu resided within that dark, skinny man.

Xie Qingling shouted, “Shen Huaizhou, this big guy is yours. He is a vessel for the Gu worms. Find and kill the worms, and he will die as well.”

“Understood!” Shen Huaizhou responded in a low voice, adopting a kiting strategy. He threw flying daggers to control the giant’s movements, maintaining a safe distance while ensuring the giant wouldn’t run amok and harm others.

As she spoke, Xie Qingling charged forward with her head down.

Since Shen Huaizhou was handling the giant, the dark, skinny man would be her responsibility.

Dodging the Ghouls that tried to rush her, Xie Qingling closed in on the dark, skinny man.

She yelled, “Illusionary Realm!”

Shen Huaizhou immediately extended his hand: “Mirage…”

As his words faded, the rapidly advancing Xie Qingling multiplied in the dark, skinny man’s eyes five, six, seven identical copies of her appeared.

Each one wore the same black dress.
