Chapter 101

The scenery of the Old Royal City flashed past Xie Qingling’s eyes. She had no mind to notice the cultural landscape here, but the voice in her head spared no effort in narrating for her.

[The Old Royal City continues many pulses from the olden days in this new mortal world. A brick overgrown with moss at the bridgehead was, thousands of years ago, the path trodden by horses and imperial carriages beneath the royal city’s feet. A willow tree stretching its neck in longing by the street was, thousands of years ago, an umbrella providing shade for groups of children under the scorching sun. The Tree-dwelling Spirit once guided lost peddlers to the right path here.]

[Now, the clanging sound of the peddlers’ drums has been replaced by the honking of car engines. People with navigation devices buried in their electronic compasses no longer lose their way in the city. The Tree-dwelling Spirit, along with the withered old willow and the cicadas of midsummer, gradually aged and died within the tree.]

[Pixiu statues, believed to attract wealth without releasing it, are placed at shop entrances, while a dilapidated Qilin stands at the gate of a decaying ancient mansion. Spirits and ghosts have retreated, and gods have withdrawn. Yet, the mortal world remains as chaotic as ever.]

[The Day Wandering God, who patrols the four seas and eight directions during the day, passed by this place and halted his enormous steps. Clad in white robes and black boots, holding a wooden tablet, the Day Wandering God lowered his giant eyes, casting a helpless, sighing gaze upon the mortal world.]

[As a fierce god who roams the four seas and eight directions, wherever the Wandering God goes, calamity follows. Though the Day Wandering God passed through this place without yet bringing down an omen, the people of the mortal world were already locked in a life-and-death struggle.]

Bi Fang swooped down from the sky, circled a few times, and finally landed on the roof of a building.

Xie Qingling and Shen Huaizhou jumped down from Bi Fang’s back, but Tang Yuanxiao remained motionless, still seated on Bi Fang’s back. Without turning his head, he said to the two of them, “Protect yourselves and don’t cause trouble for me!”

After saying this, Tang Yuanxiao urged Bi Fang to speed away, leaving only the sparks stirred up by the Bi Fang Bird’s wings, showering Xie Qingling and Shen Huaizhou from head to face.

Shen Huaizhou stared at Tang Yuanxiao’s retreating figure and let out a soft “tch.”

Xie Qingling raised her hand to wipe away the lingering heat from the non-burning flames, then flicked her skirt and stepped onto the rooftop railing with one foot, leaning forward to look ahead.

Not far from where they landed, buildings had already collapsed in one area, making it easy to pinpoint where the battle was taking place.

On the empty streets, black figures darted back and forth likely members of the Operations Department rushing to provide support.

Though they couldn’t see the entire battle through the layers of obstructing buildings, the occasional howls and sounds of collapsing objects made it clear that the fight had already reached a fever pitch.

Xie Qingling said, “Ignore him. Providing support is more urgent. Let’s head over now and see how the battle is progressing.”

Shen Huaizhou nodded, and with their skirts billowing, the two leaped and dashed across the rooftops, hurrying toward the sounds of battle. Occasionally, they jumped from higher rooftops to lower ones, their wide skirts spreading out like the wings of an eagle gliding through the air both increasing resistance during descent and helping them glide further.

After leaping for a while, the two finally arrived at the center of the battlefield

Xie Qingling and Shen Huaizhou stood atop a building over ten stories high, while across the street stood a figure over five meters tall.

He appeared human.

Though his height was immense and his build colossal, his facial features, limbs, swinging arms, and walking legs all resembled those of a human.

The five-meter giant was corpulent and brawny, wearing only black trousers below the waist while his upper body remained completely bare. Layers of excess flesh sagged down, accumulating above his belt stack upon stack of greasy skin and fat overlapping like a flesh-toned mille-feuille cake. His arms were plump and enormous, resembling underdeveloped infant limbs with only soft fat and cartilage, barely revealing discernible elbow joints. When he forcefully punched a building, a deafening “boom” echoed as half the wall collapsed, stirring up thick clouds of dust.

Perched frog-like on the giant’s shoulder was another person.

This individual was gaunt and diminutive, clinging tightly to the giant’s shoulder like a monkey.

This bizarre duo formed a grotesque combination the masterminds behind the devastating catastrophe unfolding below.

Had they been ordinary humans, the Operations Department wouldn’t have struggled so severely. The true challenge lay in their reinforcements.

Beneath the giant’s feet, Ghouls continuously emerged through summoning.

The dark, emaciated figure clinging to the giant’s shoulders held a gourd, tilting it downward to release one Ghoul after another.

Ghouls fed on desire or flesh and blood. They thrived on resentment or unresolved grievances. Every existence had its origin, every phenomenon its pattern. To create deployable combat machines, The Eleventh Citadel employed their methods to actively cultivate these abominations.

These Ghouls, wide-eyed and irrational, swarmed the Operations Department members.

Behind the Ghouls, the giant ravaged everything in his path buildings, humans… leaving trails of blood-soaked devastation in his wake.

[Gu Po’s eyes are vermilion, her abdomen cross-marked. As a Herb Spirit Woman who nourishes Herb Spirits with her own body, she uses their gu insects to cultivate a two-meter-tall puppet. The puppet’s belly contains medicines Gu Po fed it since childhood. Hush, don’t ask you wouldn’t want to know what it has consumed.]

These damned degenerates.

Xie Qingling’s gaze turned icy. “Move!” she whispered sharply.

With that, she leaped directly from the rooftop.

Shen Huaizhou followed closely, charging straight into the battlefield.

Noticing the two new arrivals, some Ghouls swarmed toward Xie Qingling and Shen Huaizhou, encircling them for a group assault.

This inadvertently diverted some pressure from the exhausted Operations Department members awaiting reinforcements. As the duo drew away part of the onslaught, the remaining operatives gained slight respite.

Xie Qingling sprinted swiftly toward the giant’s position.

They had to breach the defenses quickly to infiltrate the zone and behead their targets!

Simultaneously, Tang Yuanxiao descended from above atop his Bi Fang Bird.

While other Operations Department members struggled against Ghouls, unable to break through to the giant and the dark-skinned man, Tang Yuanxiao’s aerial assault bypassed the Ghouls entirely, aiming directly for the giant’s head.

Tang Yuanxiao excelled at fire attacks, which were not close-combat techniques. Being this close to the enemy put him at a severe disadvantage. But now, only he could break through the Ghoul’s defensive line, so he had no choice but to grit his teeth and press on.

“Flowing Fire!” Tang Yuanxiao roared.

Brilliant sparks shot from his fingertips, coalescing into a dazzling tongue of flame that surged toward the giant’s face.

The flames enveloped the giant, burning it until it howled in agony. The dark, gaunt figure crouched on the giant’s shoulder leaped up, evading the fiery tongue. Simultaneously, it slammed a palm downward, the immense palm wind extinguishing the flames.

The giant, now charred black, erupted into an even fiercer roar. It furiously pummeled nearby structures, its body thrashing against the walls like a mindless beast.

Tang Yuanxiao urged the Bi Fang Bird to dart through the gap under the giant’s armpits as it hammered its chest, aiming to deliver a fatal blow.

“Mars Offending the Stars!” Tang Yuanxiao bellowed. Flames ignited spontaneously, and a massive fireball instantly engulfed the giant, setting it ablaze.

“Ahhhhhh ”

The giant shrieked and wailed in torment. Despite the searing pain, it ignored the flames entirely, instead reaching out to seize the Bi Fang Bird’s wing. With a furious roar, it slammed the bird hard onto the ground.

The impact sent Tang Yuanxiao flying dozens of meters away. He and the bird crashed heavily against a wall, the Bi Fang Bird letting out a mournful cry as a stream of molten-like blood flowed from its wing.

“Bi Fang!” Tang Yuanxiao’s eyes nearly burst with rage. He could only blow the bone whistle, commanding Bi Fang to retreat.

Struggling to his feet, he tried to rejoin the battle, but as soon as he moved, he found himself surrounded by a dense swarm of Ghouls the giant had thrown him clear of the combat zone.

Gritting his teeth in frustration, Tang Yuanxiao had no choice but to fight his way back in.

“By the decree of the Old Ancestor of Yin Mountain, Water Talisman!” The dark, gaunt figure hovering mid-air drew a spell in the void and slapped it downward. The flames on the giant were doused, like a burning charcoal drenched with cold water, leaving it soaked and dripping.

Though now entirely blackened, the giant still lived.

The dark, gaunt figure settled back onto the giant’s shoulder, crouching like a lurking frog or a shadowy hand controlling everything.

Agonized, the giant grew even more savage.

It targeted the nearest short-haired girl, slamming her hard into the ground with one palm before lifting and hurling her away.

The girl arced through the air like a kite, hurtling directly toward Xie Qingling’s position.

At that height and speed, even a Spirit User would be severely injured upon impact.

Xie Qingling shouted, “Shen Huaizhou, lend me a hand!”

Shen Huaizhou raised his hands, supporting her back, and forcefully propelled her upward, directly toward the trajectory of the thrown girl.

Using the momentum to soar into the air, Xie Qingling adjusted her position, caught the oncoming girl, and landed with her in her arms.

The tremendous impact sent them tumbling twice across the ground before they came to a stop.

As soon as they landed, the short-haired girl retched and vomited a large mouthful of blood.

Xie Qingling held her, intending to carry her to a safer spot while waiting for the logistics team to evacuate the wounded. But the moment she touched the girl, her hand came away soaked in blood from the black uniform with golden trim.

She’s badly injured.

“Re…reinforcements are here,” the short-haired girl gasped with effort. “I…I almost broke through their line…”

“But I…I can’t hold on any longer.”

Straining to keep her eyes open, she stared at Xie Qingling’s unfamiliar face and said, “You…you must…stop them…stop The Eleventh Citadel… They began their assault this morning…they’ve gone mad.”

Her blood-streaked face pressed against Xie Qingling’s chest, the cold, unyielding surface of a golden badge imprinting against her skin. The emblem’s intricate patterns and sundial motif were textures every department member recognized by touch.

The girl let out a delirious chuckle: “I…I wanted to die like a brave warrior…fighting till the end.”

“But I…I can’t… My organs…are shattered…”

After these broken words, the short-haired girl fell silent, her head lolling to the side. The pair of Midday Mandarin Duck Halberds she’d been clutching clattered to the ground.

She was gone.

Xie Qingling laid her down on the pavement, gazing silently at the lifeless form. The face still retained traces of youth she couldn’t have been more than twenty. Yet her Spirit had departed.

With a light tap of her toe, Xie Qingling whispered the incantation: “Soul Return!”
