Chapter 10
The initial strike had severed the Rakshasa Ghost’s foot at the ankle.
Given its massive size, the momentum of the fall would likely send it stumbling forward over a meter. Combined with its three-meter-long body, she could roughly estimate where its head would land.
Xie Qingling’s mind rapidly calculated the trajectory. Her gaze fixed on the predicted location in the empty air, eyes blazing with determination as she raised the Ghost Blade with all her strength.
“Your head is mine!”
The blade sank into flesh.
After four years of practice, she knew this sensation well.
The cold, gleaming white blade gradually deepened its penetration, soon stained with a vivid, shocking crimson.
Was… was it over? Had she struck true?
Gasping for breath, Xie Qingling feared the Rakshasa Ghost might not be completely dead and wanted to deliver additional strikes. But then she realized her right arm hung limply at her side in an unnatural position, sharp pain radiating from the joint. She couldn’t muster any strength to lift it.
Had it dislocated?
As she supported her injured arm and considered asking Dong Jia to finish the creature off, an extremely faint whisper fell by her ear:
“Through your eyes, behold what I see.”
Glancing right, she noticed two pairs of feet in black ankle boots that had appeared without her noticing.
Simultaneously, the decapitated Rakshasa Ghost lying on the ground became fully visible.
“Through your eyes, behold what I see.”
Ling Fang held a clay statue seated on a lotus flower.
The statue held a Zen Staff in its left hand and a Treasure Pearl in its right, resembling a Bodhisattva image but with a ferocious expression particularly its bulging, wrathful eyes.
The clay statue emitted a soft glow, like a guiding lantern in the darkness, casting faint, radiant light.
Where the gentle light reached, all other lights extinguished and sounds ceased. The space around Xie Qingling seemed to transport to another realm, while elements of that other world gradually revealed their true forms.
At Ling Fang’s feet lay the Rakshasa Ghost Head severed by Xie Qingling.
Carried by momentum, it had rolled several times before stopping near his shoes.
Fresh blood splattered his footwear, dripping with crimson stains.
The Rakshasa Ghost’s eyes remained wide open, their corroded pupils bulging slightly from shock. The severed head lay on the ground, its features twisted grotesquely.
Head separated from body, blood pooling everywhere.
The Rakshasa Ghost had been decapitated by the very weapon it created.
Observing the scene, Ling Fang’s eyes briefly flickered with astonishment and disbelief.
The one responsible now half-crouched on the ground, using the Rakshasa ghost blade as a crutch to shakily rise to her feet.
Xie Qingling’s face was deathly pale.
Her body felt utterly exhausted, especially her dislocated arm throbbing with pain and soreness.
How she wished she could lie down and sleep.
But she couldn’t.
In front of Ling Fang, she refused to appear too disheveled—this concerned her department evaluation.
Summoning remarkable willpower, Xie Qingling stood upright. She wiped her face, trying to appear more alert, but only succeeded in smearing blood across her cheeks, making her look even more bedraggled.
But Xie Qingling remained completely unaware of this, flashing a bright smile as she immediately threw three questions at Ling Fang.
“Did I pass the assessment?”
“Did I get the authorization?”
“Can I join you now?”
Her eyes shone so brilliantly, so full of vitality, even after experiencing a life-and-death struggle.
Ling Fang’s gaze swept over the separated body and head of the Rakshasa Ghost, glanced at the unconscious Dong Jia, and finally lifted his eyes to look at Xie Qingling, saying, “Congratulations, you passed the assessment.”
“From now on, you’re one of us.”
The girl with the high ponytail standing beside him gasped in astonishment, her mouth hanging open.
She stared at Xie Qingling with a “are you a monster?” expression for several seconds before muttering quietly, “…That’s way too fierce.”
Using a Rakshasa Ghost as a trial assessment…
This was a Rakshasa Ghost—a Fierce Ghost that could devour both spirits and humans!
To think that she had been dispatched as the medical support to prevent accidents and protect the innocent.
Yet when they rushed to the scene, everything had already been settled.
Moreover, judging by the bloodshed at the scene, only the Rakshasa Ghost had suffered any harm.
How… was this possible?
Had their department really recruited an exceptionally powerful combat genius?
This newcomer’s talent must be incredible!
Ye Anran instantly grew excited, her eyes sparkling as she stared intently at Xie Qingling, eager to pull her aside and ask for details.
However, Ling Fang’s voice quickly interrupted her thoughts. “Anran, there’s still another ghost.”
Ye Anran immediately snapped back to attention and opened the silver case she carried with her.
On the surface of the silver case was painted a symbol of two snakes with their tails entwined.
She took out a white banner from the case and slowly moved her hands, forming a complex hand seal.
“Heaven and Earth Mysterious Ancestor, I am the Spirit Sealer.
Capture souls and pursue spirits, lock them within.”
Instantly, Xie Qingling felt a chilling aura spreading around her. Wisps of tangible black energy were drawn out from the activity center and ultimately absorbed into the white banner.
Accompanying this were piercing, mournful screams.
That voice belonged to
The Crossroad Ghost!
Xie Qingling froze, hesitating for a moment before saying, “Um… this ghost helped me! It didn’t harm anyone!”
Ye Anran didn’t stop, but Ling Fang beside her spoke up, “The Ghost Binding Banner is only temporarily sealing it inside, not destroying it. For ghosts that haven’t harmed innocent people, we usually have alternative methods of handling them.”
As for what those methods were, Ling Fang didn’t elaborate further.
Perhaps it was beyond her authorization level, Xie Qingling thought after all, she was just a newcomer. She didn’t press further.
Soon, Ye Anran’s movements ceased.
The Crossroad Ghost’s screams abruptly stopped as well.
What changed next was the white banner.
On the previously blank white banner, an image of the Crossroad Ghost now appeared:
It depicted a child with limbs as thin and withered as dead wood, a short stature, and four eyes.
Looking at the Crossroad Ghost’s image, Ye Anran gave a light laugh. Her smile was innocent and sweet, like a kindergarten teacher on her first day facing the children in her class.
“What an adorable little ghost! Don’t worry, big sister will take good care of you!” Ye Anran cheerfully patted its cheek before rolling up the white banner and placing it back into the box.
After dealing with the Crossroad Ghost, Ye Anran approached Xie Qingling, studying her curiously with several glances.
“My name is Ye Anran, I’m your senior here.”
“Let me see your hand…” Taking advantage of Xie Qingling’s dazed state, Ye Anran took her hand and clasped it between her palms.
The repeatedly torn wound in her palm should have been excruciatingly painful, but after all this time and the chilling cold from the Rakshasa ghost blade, Xie Qingling had grown somewhat numb.
Without sensation, there was no pain.
Now, held in Ye Anran’s hands, Xie Qingling only felt a gentle itching sensation, as if her wound was being enveloped by a tender spring-like warmth.
Ye Anran whispered softly: “Returning Spring.”
When she released Xie Qingling’s hand, Xie Qingling discovered that the wound in her palm had miraculously healed without any medicine!
If not for the layers upon layers of dried blood stains that had accumulated over time, no one could tell her palm had ever been injured.
Although she had mentally prepared herself, knowing this world was mysterious and absurd, completely defying scientific principles, witnessing such a scene firsthand still left her profoundly shocked.
Xie Qingling looked up in disbelief at the person who had caused this miracle.
Noticing the gaze fixed upon her, Ye Anran blinked at her and said gently, “This is just part of my abilities. I’m an Innate Spirit, and Innate Spirits are incredibly powerful! You just need to trust me.”
As she spoke, she began manipulating Xie Qingling’s hand again, quickly healing the dislocated joint as well.
So… so incredible!
Xie Qingling still wore an expression of utter astonishment.
“And my friend… I don’t know if she’s injured. Could you check on her?” Xie Qingling flexed her now fully recovered hand and immediately pointed toward Dong Jia.
“She fainted when we appeared,” Ye Anran said. “Your friend seems quite timid, even afraid of us.”
Xie Qingling: “…”
What likely frightened Dong Jia into unconsciousness wasn’t Ling Fang and the others, but the suddenly materialized, decapitated Rakshasa Ghost.
“Will she be alright?” Xie Qingling asked.
“With me here, of course she’ll be fine,” Ye Anran assured. “I guarantee she’ll wake up completely unaffected.”
Ye Anran walked over to Dong Jia, several silver needles somehow already in her hand. She inserted them into specific acupoints on Dong Jia’s head, her soft voice accompanying the movements.
Her speech was slow, like soft murmuring, yet resembling the gentle singing of an ancient lullaby.
Watching and listening from nearby, Xie Qingling felt both nervous and concerned, unsure of what to say.
As if sensing her anxiety, Ling Fang explained: “She’ll hypnotize your friend to make her forget everything that happened tonight.”
Xie Qingling paused momentarily.
“Forgetting tonight’s events will do more good than harm for an ordinary person like her. At least she won’t have to worry about frequent nightmares afterward. When she wakes up tomorrow, both her physical and mental state will be excellent. Don’t worry – Anran has Godly Blessing. Everything I’ve said, she can accomplish.”
Godly Blessing?
Xie Qingling keenly sensed something, but before she could voice her question, Ling Fang spoke first: “Wait for my contact. Let’s end here for today. I’ll tell you everything you want to know later.”
He tapped the Bluetooth earpiece hooked over his ear, adding before that: “I still need to clean up the mess you left behind.”
The public facilities she had damaged along the way amounted to more than what was visible here. Xie Qingling said, “Inside the university student activity center—”
“The logistics department will handle it.”
Then there was nothing to worry about.
Xie Qingling nodded, supporting Dong Jia against her shoulder as she walked step by step toward the dormitory building.
Dong Jia was currently in a near-sleepwalking state her consciousness fragmented but her body retaining some mobility. Guiding her along wasn’t particularly strenuous for Xie Qingling.
Meanwhile, the other end of Ling Fang’s earpiece connected.
Without waiting for the other party to speak, Ling Fang stated directly, “Cancel all preparations for the intern’s assessment.”
“Why? Does she not need an evaluation to join us?”
“No, she’s already passed it.” Ling Fang smiled with deep satisfaction. “She just single-handedly killed a Rakshasa Ghost and protected her companion without any Godly Blessing.”
There was a brief silence on the other end. “…The newbie is that fierce?”
“She didn’t even use up the protective charm I left her.”
“…Damn!”
“You old-timers better step up your game, or you’ll really be outdone by a rookie.”
Ling Fang was in high spirits. “Alright, send in the logistics team. It’s time for cleanup.”
