- Chapter 16 - The Stream Where Tarata-chan is Intensely Curious About the Katana
Magical enchantment was all about image.
For example, to realize the image of “cloaking in lightning,” the quickest way was to enchant it with magic that generated lightning. However, just like the conditions for natural lightning, it could also be generated by clashing ice magics together. Heck, though extremely inefficient, you could even forcibly convert wind or fire magic to produce it.
What was important was an image based on logic and theory. If that was sound and correct, then anything was possible.
“So, you were doing that stream with a solid image too, which was why you were still able to stream right then, right?”
“Yes, Master! The experiment was a success, it was!”
Apparently, Tarata-chan’s attempt to stream from within the dungeon was successful.
(Phew, good, good. If connecting the inside and outside of the dungeon via stream worked out, then the plan to send Delta-chan into dungeons would become much more realistic.)
“Responding to comments was difficult, however, the discrepancy with the outside was 20 seconds—within the margin set by Master, it was! But, more importantly than that right then, that katana, it was!”
(I would think successfully connecting the dungeon’s interior and exterior with her alchemical router, her own research, would be more cause for celebration, though. Well, I guessed that just showed how curious she was about this katana of mine?)
“A katana that could warp you from outside the dungeon straight to the 6th floor by slashing with it—I had never heard of such a thing, I declared! What kind of magical enchantment had to be applied to achieve that, I wondered!”
“Personally, I was more curious about that router of yours.”
“Trying to change the subject was futile, it was!”
(It wasn’t that I was trying to change the subject, I really was genuinely more interested in that.)
While trying to placate Tarata-chan, who desperately wanted to know the principles behind the katana, I proceeded through the dungeon. Using the katana I made to shortcut to the 6th floor was nice, but Tarata-chan just couldn’t seem to accept it—
“How! How could you possibly create a magical enchantment that allowed you to warp through a dungeon!”
“What did you mean ‘how’? It was an application of teleportation formulas.”
“A dungeon was an alternate dimension, was it not?! Teleportation formulas shouldn’t work in there, it was decided!”
A dungeon was an alternate dimension twisted by the Demon Lord Yuggy. Within a dungeon, which was expanded to many times its original spatial volume, the conventional wisdom had been that teleportation formulas, which required precise location settings, did not function. However, the play-loving Demon Lord Yuggy didn’t actually want to annihilate people, so he provided a one-way magic circle that teleported you to the entrance once you defeated the dungeon boss.
So, it wasn’t that teleportation formulas couldn’t be used. It was just that the magic formula for ‘teleporting by setting a precise location’ couldn’t be used. The teleportation formula itself was usable.
“Therefore, it was a katana adjusted to allow dungeon shortcuts. That was what this new katana was, I guessed.”
Thanks to Tarata-chan, the prospect of having Delta-chan fight even within dungeons was becoming a reality. This katana was a new creation made in anticipation of fighting in such dungeons, designed for rapidly moving to a dungeon floor where specified materials were located, something like that?
“Well, it was still a prototype sample, though.”
“This… was a prototype sample… was it?”
GROOOOAAAR!!
As we were discussing such things, an ogre appeared from deeper down the path. Ogres were large, demonic creatures with powerful bodies. Despite their strength, they had no edible parts and nothing useful for alchemy, making them, frankly, monsters you only lost out by fighting. Possessing only ferocity, the ogre, upon seeing us, immediately brandished the club in its hand.
“Hup.”
I slashed at the ogre with this new katana.
My casually swung katana bisected the space before me, and the ogre that was there, in two. There was no difference between cutting the space of a dungeon and cutting a living creature like an ogre.
“As it was then, its power was too strong, see?”
This was fine for an ogre, but with this much power, I couldn’t exactly recover materials from monsters. It was more like a failed creation that was far too powerful, wouldn’t you say?
“Alright, let’s gather some materials, Tarata-chan.”
Since we were both alchemists, we should generally know what kinds of materials were useful. In times like these, it was nice that when you were with another alchemist, you didn’t have to waste words saying things like, “This material is best collected this way.”
“Oh, this mushroom looked like it could be used in alchemy.”
Illusion Mushroom. Eating it caused hallucinations and diarrhea, but if you soaked cloth in its boiled juices and applied a specific alchemical process, you could make a levitating tent usable even on rough terrain. It only grew in dungeons, and since only its rather unpleasant effects when eaten were widely known, no one but alchemists gave it a second glance.
Besides Illusion Mushrooms, there were many other materials I wanted to gather on this occasion, like Luminous Stones, which could be mixed with ink to create fluorescent ink that glowed when exposed to special light. There were quite a few things I was running low on, and plenty of stuff just lying around that I could probably sell to other alchemists.
As expected of a dungeon. A treasure trove, indeed.
“…Defense penetration… no, that wouldn’t explain being able to jump to a specified dungeon floor… it was…”
“Hey, stop muttering and move your hands!”
(I hadn’t intended to acknowledge her as a disciple, but if you wanted to be treated like one, then properly gather materials with me.)
“Ahead, we’ll split up to gather materials. By master’s authority, I’ll take this way, Tarata-chan, you go that way.”
“! Master’s command, understood, it was!”
She seemed engrossed in the katana, but using my authority as master, I asked her to explore the other direction. That direction was where the ogre had come from. If my guess was correct, that wouldn’t be the only ogre, and it wouldn’t be surprising if there was a whole pack of them. Unfortunately, the only weapon I had brought for test-cutting today was this katana, and it was difficult to have a stream-worthy fight with it. Since we were going to the trouble of streaming from inside a dungeon, which was impossible until now, sending her that way would probably be better for stream appeal than my complete lack of it.
“Alrighty, time to gather golem materials~♪ Time to gather golem materials~♪“
Having parted ways with Tarata-chan, I devoted myself to collecting materials for my golems.
