- Chapter 11 - The Stream About a “Shoot the Horse to Get the General” Kind of Strategy
“Actually, a situation occurred the other day that I have yet to report to you, Boss.”
With that, Delta-chan began to recount the incident of the six stolen katanas.
“As my creator, Boss, I presume you are already fully cognizant of my weaknesses.”
“Dungeons, right?”
“Your assessment is, indeed, exceedingly correct.”
(Her designation… was indeed, the correct answer.)
My Delta-chan possessed enough talent to make it back here even if all six of her precious katanas were stolen. However, all that talent stemmed from her ability to constantly analyze and optimize her body’s movements by interfacing with streaming technology.
Conversely, in a space where she could not reference streams at all, she became a golem so feeble even a child could defeat her.
My Delta-chan’s strength was entirely dependent on ‘stream footage.’
And spaces where she could not link with such ‘stream footage’ did exist in this world.
That place was none other than a dungeon, a den of monsters and a source of precious metals like gems and magic stones.
Dungeons were places born from the power of the Demon Lord Yuggy, and their interiors were connected to other, alien realms. Due to the Demon Lord’s power, while valuables like gems and magic stones appeared in abundance within these dungeons, an equally formidable number of powerful monsters also continuously emerged.
Naturally, as an alchemist, I needed materials that were plentiful there. The reason I didn’t just send Delta-chan charging in was precisely because dungeons were otherworlds—places where streams could not reach.
No stream meant it was a place where Delta-chan became her weakest. Therefore, I had forbidden her from advancing into dungeons, only giving her the okay to hunt monsters that overflowed from them.
“So, if you were talking about dungeons, did that mean there was one in this village?”
“Precisely. That was the most supremely logical and correct answer.”
Correct answer, huh… More like, what a pain in the ass!
Look, I’m the one who set her speech patterns and personality, but even I have to say, isn’t this way of talking incredibly tedious?! What the heck was a ‘supremely logical and correct answer’?! ‘Correct answer’ was fine on its own!!
I needed to adjust her personality settings and speech patterns later.
“The Alchemist Elf personage had declared her intent to study my katanas and apply a magical enchantment that will enable streaming even within a dungeon. Incidentally, this is a sample.”
“Hoh~ I see, I see.”
I thought I’d given her a task to keep her busy and away from me by having her try to sell products to the Iswood villagers… but was she actually trying to make me, one of Iswood’s residents, buy her product via Delta-chan? By making a katana that would allow my Delta-chan, who couldn’t use her abilities in a dungeon, to finally fight there?
“…Heh, interesting.”
To think there was an alchemist out there who would try to sell a product to the very person who gave her the assignment. This was exactly like the saying, ‘He who would shoot the general must first shoot his horse’—trying to win over me, the general, by first going through Delta-chan, the horse. Not a bad idea.
The sample katana she presented, while its physical construction as a weapon still had some shortcomings, had its magical enchantment properly applied.
‘Memory Retention.’
So, the idea was to use a mental-effect magical enchantment, one that was difficult even for me, to allow Delta-chan to retain the streaming technology directly within herself, huh? This single blade might have been weak, but if all six had similar enchantments, or if the enchantment itself were strengthened, it could be viable.
Yeah, this looked like it could actually work.
More than anything, the audacity of presenting a product to the very master who gave her the assignment—that was what was truly interesting.
“It had been a while since things got this amusing. Don’t you think so, Delta-chan?”
“I could discern from your smile that Boss was experiencing great mirth and enjoyment.”
No, no, this really was fascinating. Even for someone like me, who did alchemy as a hobby, I had never heard of an alchemist trying something like this. The sample was good too. Maybe I should actually consider taking her on as a disciple.
“So, a collab with Delta-chan, was it? A test cutting in the dungeon using this sample, something like that?”
“Indeed, most supremely. For my creator, Boss Susuria, discerning such a matter would be an instantaneous feat.”
…Yep, her speech was still a pain. Definitely fixing that later.
“However, regarding that matter, this Delta had a suggestion to proffer.”
“Oh, a suggestion?”
“Yes. As the items crafted by Boss were likely to be of superior quality to those created by her, I wished to humbly request the creation of a similar weapon.”
“…Yeah, figures.”
Right. Her eye for things wasn’t bad. Since no one in Iswood village would buy it, trying to sell it to her master showed an interesting kind of initiative.
The only problem was, that master was an alchemist. So, naturally, it would be faster for me to just make it myself, right?
(Yep, that was how it would turn out~)
Okay, so with that, the sample would be considered a freebie and hereby confiscated! I would use this magical enchantment as a reference to create a new katana for Delta-chan!
“Just wait a bit, Delta-chan. I, your Boss, will now bestow upon you a new katana.”
“…My gratitude was supreme. I was overwhelmed with thanks.”
As for Tarata-chan… well, yeah, good luck with that. My judgment was, ‘Interesting, but since I hadn’t bought it, no apprenticeship.’ So, I would just let her continue with her assignment a little longer.
