Chapter 42: Unexpected?
***
Looking at the stain on her dress, Nan Zha took a deep breath.
She had just finished talking with the people here and was planning to go see what Bai Ning was doing.
A waiter nearby, whether due to unsteady footing or deliberate intent, amid the surprised exclamations of those around, suddenly tilted the tray, and the dark red liquid spilled directly onto her dress.
“I’m sorry, truly sorry, miss. It was my negligence…”
Nan Zha paid no attention to the waiter’s frantic apologies, coldly staring at Nan Ziyue.
After all these years, her sister’s methods were still so crude and underhanded. She really didn’t know how that old fool at home raised her.
Nan Ziyue was covering her mouth with a light laugh, her eyes full of triumphant satisfaction. Seeing Nan Zha’s disheveled appearance was the best thing for her.
Although this sister of hers had already been schemed out of the Nan family by them, she had originally wanted to see her in a sorry state, but never expected that Nan Zha could build everything from scratch with her bare hands.
This drove her mad with jealousy, though she had no other thoughts, she simply wanted to destroy Nan Zha.
The two women’s gazes collided, and the air seemed to freeze.
Before Nan Zha could speak, Nan Ziyue took the initiative with a concerned expression.
“Oh my, how could sister be so careless? Such a nice dress ruined just like that, what a pity.” Her concerned and surprised expression was that of a perfect good sister.
Under the crystal chandelier’s light, the red wine dripped down Nan Zha’s dress, splashing dark red traces on the polished floor.
The guests around either whispered behind their hands or cast curious glances, with subtle awkwardness floating in the air.
Nan Zha’s fingertips lightly brushed over the wine stain on her dress, her expression still composed, though a trace of coldness flashed in her eyes.
Just as she was about to speak, a voice revealing no emotion came from outside the crowd—
“Oh my, so sorry for being late.”
Everyone turned around to see Bai Ning in a light blue mermaid dress, swaying gracefully as she approached, casually picking up a glass of red wine from a nearby tray.
Her lips curved slightly upward, but her eyes held a sharp smile as she coldly swept her gaze over Nan Ziyue before settling on Nan Zha.
“What happened here?” She feigned surprise, reaching out to tuck Nan Zha’s loose strands of hair behind her ear, the gesture intimate and natural.
Nan Zha looked at Bai Ning’s intimate gesture, gazing at her delicate and pretty face, her breathing involuntarily becoming heavier. She looked away and said softly.
“Just an accident.”
Bai Ning raised an eyebrow, suddenly turned around, expressionless, and “accidentally” tilted the wine glass in her hand—
Splash!
The entire glass of red wine poured directly onto Nan Ziyue’s red dress, the bright red liquid instantly soaking through the veil skirt and dripping down the hem.
Bai Ning naturally knew who had done it, and she also knew that Nan Zha’s methods were ruthless. Not retaliating now was simply because she hadn’t found the right opportunity.
After all, at the Jiang family’s banquet, she still needed to win the favor of the Jiang family head. If she started fighting with others before the host even arrived, it would definitely leave a bad impression.
But Bai Ning didn’t care about that. She didn’t need any support from the Jiang family. Whoever made her feel uncomfortable, she would deal with them.
“Oops!” Bai Ning covered her mouth, her tone completely insincere, “My hand slipped.”
Nan Ziyue froze in place, her face instantly turning pale. She looked down at her carefully selected dress now ruined, her fingertips trembling slightly. When she looked up again, her eyes were practically shooting fire.
Bai Ning acted as if nothing had happened, smiling as she pulled out a silk handkerchief and offered it insincerely: “Need help?”
The surroundings fell silent as the guests held their breath and watched the show.
Nan Ziyue clenched her fists, her nails digging deep into her palms. She didn’t speak, just stared fiercely at Bai Ning, took a deep breath, and left with a dark expression.
Bai Ning felt a bit disappointed seeing Nan Ziyue’s lack of reaction. She had thought Nan Ziyue would lose her rationality and attack directly like before, which would have let her have some fun.
“Alright, I’ll go take care of this mess first and come back later.”
Nan Zha pointed to the stain on her dress. Although she really wanted to chat with Bai Ning, having this stuff on her was still uncomfortable. Fortunately, she had anticipated that Nan Ziyue would cause trouble this time, so she had prepared several backup dresses in advance. She could just go to her car and change into a fresh one.
“Do you need me to come with you?” Bai Ning asked.
“It’s fine, just a quick thing. You wait inside.”
Nan Zha waved her hand in refusal.
“Oh, okay then.”
Seeing Nan Zha’s insistence, Bai Ning didn’t persist. Although she had been angry just now, she was only upset because she couldn’t stand Nan Ziyue’s disgusting attitude. It definitely wasn’t because she was angry about seeing Nan Zha get wine spilled on her.
She turned and walked toward the restroom. Splashing Nan Ziyue earlier had felt great, but some of it had gotten on her own hand during the process, and now it felt sticky and uncomfortable.
……
Going out through the villa’s side door, Nan Zha’s expression was ice-cold. She wasn’t some pushover. Since Nan Ziyue liked playing these underhanded tricks, she didn’t mind giving her a taste of her own medicine. She took out her phone and dialed a number.
“Hello? What’s up?” came a familiar female voice from the other end.
“You’re at the banquet too, right? Help me find a female wearing waiter’s clothing, about 160cm tall, with a freckle on her left cheek. Teach her a lesson, then have her bring Nan Ziyue to one of the upstairs rooms.” Her voice was calm yet cold, with dangerous light in her eyes.
She hadn’t reached her current position relying solely on her genius business acumen. Sometimes, necessary methods were definitely required.
The person on the other end noticed that Nan Zha’s mood wasn’t good and didn’t say anything else.
“OK”
……
After washing her hands, Bai Ning stood in a corner of the venue, carefully observing her surroundings, her eyes scanning over person after person.
She hadn’t forgotten that she had another purpose today. This banquet was hosted by Jiang Xiyue, and the commotion earlier wasn’t exactly small, so Jiang Xiyue probably knew about it by now.
The system had said that she had some kind of attraction to villainous supporting characters, and after causing such a big scene just now, Jiang Xiyue might have already noticed her.
She didn’t want to be noticed by Jiang Xiyue, so she might as well find a place to hide before they met. When the banquet officially started, Jiang Xiyue would most likely come out to give a speech. She could just watch from a distance and recognize what Jiang Xiyue looked like.
Just as Bai Ning was still observing her surroundings, a waiter carrying a tray approached. When Bai Ning saw the tray and waiter, remembering what had happened earlier, she warily stepped back.
But this waiter seemed quite normal, just respectfully asking Bai Ning:
“Miss, would you like a drink?”
“No thanks, I don’t drink alcohol.”
Bai Ning politely declined. She didn’t like drinking alcohol, it was bitter and astringent, not tasty at all.
“We also have fruit wine here. It only has a little alcohol content and tastes very good.” Seeing Bai Ning’s refusal, the waiter indicated there were other options on the tray.
Looking at the fruit wine with some curiosity, Bai Ning thought that the alcohol content shouldn’t be too high, and she didn’t want to go over there to get juice, so she said:
“Give me one then.”
“Certainly.”
“Thank you.”
