Chapter 37: The CEO Hasn’t Smiled Like This in a Long Time

***

Upon hearing this, Nan Zha first looked at Bai Ning and smiled.

“Alright.”

Getting the answer she wanted, Bai Ning breathed a sigh of relief. To prevent Nan Zha from changing her mind, she quickly grabbed Nan Zha’s hand and headed toward the dining table.

Bai Ning and Nan Zha sat facing each other, with Aunt Li standing behind Bai Ning.

The last time she had sat together with Nan Zha for a meal like this seemed to be when she had been drugged unconscious before. Just thinking about the foolish things she had done that time made Bai Ning’s face turn red.

If she hadn’t forcibly kissed Nan Zha, would Nan Zha not be paying so much attention to her now?

Bai Ning kept feeling like there was a gaze intermittently staring at her, making her feel uncomfortable while eating. Even though everything in front of her was food that Bai Ning loved, it all tasted flavorless in her mouth.

To divert Nan Zha’s attention, Bai Ning picked up a large shrimp in front of her, peeled it, and with her head lowered, stood up and placed it in Nan Zha’s bowl.

Nan Zha had been happily watching Bai Ning, who looked like a timid quail. Although Bai Ning appeared meek and different from how she used to face her, she felt this was Bai Ning’s true nature.

After seeing Bai Ning pick out a large shrimp for her, her attention immediately shifted to the bowl in front of her.

She wasn’t actually very hungry, nor did she particularly like eating shrimp, but at this moment she picked it up and took a bite.

A genuine smile of happiness appeared on her face.

Aunt Li stood to the side, watching the interaction between Bai Ning and Nan Zha with an auntie-like smile throughout. This scene resembled the interaction between a domineering female CEO and her little wife from the shows she watched.

As she watched, she leaned closer to Bai Ning’s side, and couldn’t help but blurt out a sentence.

“It’s been a long time since I’ve seen the CEO smile like this.”

Upon hearing this, Bai Ning looked up at Aunt Li with surprise.

Why did that sound so strange? And aren’t you supposed to be my housekeeper? Why are you using lines meant for the other person’s housekeeper?

Nan Zha naturally also heard this sentence and looked at Aunt Li with some confusion.

“What does that mean?”

However, she was just curious about why Aunt Li would say such a thing, because for Nan Zha, who didn’t often browse the internet, this reference was completely incomprehensible.

Seeing both of them looking at her with strange expressions, Aunt Li couldn’t maintain her composure either. She waved her hands, explaining awkwardly:

“No, it doesn’t mean anything. I’ve just been watching too many TV dramas with the young lady recently. I was just thinking about the plot and couldn’t help but say it out loud.”

“Is that so?”

Although she had explained, Nan Zha still looked suspicious. She felt like there was more to that sentence than what was being said.

“Yes, that’s right. I can vouch for it, I watched them together with Aunt Li.”

Seeing Nan Zha still looking doubtful, Bai Ning immediately agreed with Aunt Li’s words. She was a bit afraid that Nan Zha might punish her if she found out the real meaning behind this reference.

That was a plotline between the main character and the female lead. What business did a female lead and a villainess have with such a storyline?

Upon hearing this, Nan Zha frowned slightly, nodded, and didn’t say anything more.

But she didn’t intend to leave it at that. She could clearly see that Bai Ning had been lying just now. Having spent these past few months with Bai Ning, she had figured out Bai Ning’s foolish personality completely.

Bai Ning simply couldn’t hide her true emotions and would always show them on her face.

She’d look up what that sentence meant online when she had free time.

While thinking this, she continued eating the shrimp that Bai Ning kept peeling for her.

Nothing else happened after that, and the meal passed just like that.

After dinner, Bai Ning and Nan Zha, both feeling quite full, sat on the sofa.

“Sister Nan, what brought you here so early today?”

Bai Ning was still curious about why Nan Zha had come so early, usually she had many things to deal with.

“I finished handling things this morning. We’re going to the banquet together tonight, so I came by to bring you your things.”

As she spoke, she shook the bag in her hand. Only then did Bai Ning notice what Nan Zha was holding, it was the bag she had left at Nan Zha’s place a few days ago.

She hadn’t expected Nan Zha to personally deliver the bag to her.

“Ah, sorry for troubling Sister Nan to make a special trip.”

Taking the bag Nan Zha handed her, Bai Ning thanked her.

After a few words, the two fell into silence again, starting to stare at each other.

Nan Zha was silent because she naturally didn’t talk much, and also because she didn’t know how to talk to Bai Ning. Previously, Bai Ning had always been the one to initiate conversations.

Bai Ning, on the other hand, simply didn’t dare to speak. She felt like if she said too much, she’d get punished.

“Sister Nan, will there be anyone I know at tonight’s banquet?”

After a moment of silence, Bai Ning couldn’t stand it anymore and randomly asked a question.

Upon hearing this, Nan Zha thought for a while before answering.

“That young lady from the Su family should be coming. As for others…”

Her words paused here, and Nan Zha hesitated, but finally spoke up.

“Nan Ziyue is also coming.”

When mentioning this name, Nan Zha’s expression clearly wasn’t good, she looked gloomy and cold.

Originally, she hadn’t wanted to tell Bai Ning, but considering that Bai Ning was going with her, if her good sister was planning to do something, it would definitely involve Bai Ning.

Moreover, Bai Ning knew about the relationship between her and Nan Ziyue, and had also had conflicts with Nan Ziyue before. Telling her in advance could serve as a warning.

“Nan Ziyue!?”

Upon hearing this name, Bai Ning’s face immediately scrunched up.

Back then, she had always thought Nan Zha was the female lead, so she had always been fawning over Nan Zha, and had tried to use the Bai family’s power to help Nan Zha in business. This naturally led to retaliation from Nan Zha’s half-sister, Nan Ziyue.

So naturally, she had assumed Nan Ziyue was the vicious female supporting character, which is why she not only frequently targeted Nan Ziyue, but had even slapped Nan Ziyue at a banquet. That’s how the grudge between Bai Ning and Nan Ziyue had formed.

Although her conflict with Nan Ziyue ran deep, Nan Zha clearly hated Nan Ziyue even more.

Nan Ziyue and Nan Zha had never gotten along. Nan Ziyue was born to Nan Zha’s stepmother, and Nan Zha’s mother had died in an accident when she was 8 years old, but this sister was only 3 years younger than her.

Something was already wrong with the situation, and combined with her mother’s accidental death and her father’s quick remarriage, Nan Zha understood that things weren’t right. She hated her father and his new family.

So after coming of age, she chose to build her career on her own. She had originally planned to settle accounts with her stepmother once she had enough power, but Nan Ziyue kept targeting her at every turn.

So when they heard that Nan Ziyue would be at this banquet, both of their expressions turned sour.

“What is she planning to do?”

Bai Ning asked Nan Zha with a serious expression. She was no longer afraid of Nan Zha at this moment, now the important thing was Nan Ziyue. After all, the enemy of my enemy is my friend, and she planned to temporarily team up with Nan Zha to deal with Nan Ziyue.

“I’m not sure. Perhaps she’s representing the Nan family to establish good relations with the Jiang family, or perhaps she has other motives, it’s hard to say.”

Nan Zha’s expression was also very serious. She hadn’t figured it out yet, so they could only take things as they came.
