Chapter 12: Angry Cat Face.jpg

***

Bai Ning hadn’t slept this well in a long time. Although her university classes weren’t that many, just two 8 AM classes per week, she could sleep in to her heart’s content during other times.

Moreover, she was the young lady of the Bai family, never worrying about food or clothing. She didn’t even care about employment since she wasn’t some struggling college student attending five 8 AM classes out of seven days a week, constantly doing homework, busy like a spinning top just to avoid failing courses and prepare for thesis defense.

She could only say that people’s joys and sorrows are not the same, she just felt happy.

The reason she felt so refreshed today was that after discovering she was the female lead, even sleeping became more comfortable. She no longer had to lose sleep worrying about being a villainous supporting character like before.

She was the female lead. This wasn’t some abuse novel, and there was no male protagonist in this book, she was the sky itself!

System: [Although I really don’t want to disturb your sweet dreams, I have to tell you something unpleasant]

Bai Ning: “Hah, what could be worse than me offending all these villainous supporting characters?”

Bai Ning couldn’t believe anything could be worse than this. As long as it wasn’t worse than this, then everything would be fine. The corners of Bai Ning’s mouth curved up slightly.

[Essentially, it’s actually the same level]

[As the female lead, although you’re not an abuse novel heroine, being kidnapped, drugged, hit by cars, these things that ordinary people might never encounter in their entire lives are just common occurrences for you]

Bai Ning’s smile slowly faded.

“Seriously, brother, are you even speaking human language? What you’re saying means I could encounter robbery just going out for a stroll, and trucks could come charging at me while I’m walking on the sidewalk, right?”

Bai Ning couldn’t hold it together anymore. Was this really being a female lead or some kind of weird misfortune magnet? Anyone who wanted to be this cursed female lead could have the role.

System: [Don’t panic, don’t panic, there’s also good news]

Bai Ning: “Good news?”

System: [The good news is that you won’t be in any life-threatening danger from these incidents. At most, you’ll just suffer a bit]

I think you might have some misunderstanding about what constitutes “good news.” Are you treating her like she’s having a rough time or something?

“Where the hell is this female lead stuff? This is straight-up criminal punishment! If you gave this treatment to all criminals, they’d be more law-abiding than anyone.”

System: [Oh right, since we haven’t found the protagonist yet, for some things, like kidnapping, you might have to rely on yourself]

No protagonist? Me, a female lead, fighting bandits?

For real? Can I even win? Seems unlikely.

“Stop, stop talking. I’m going to lie down for a bit.”

Her good mood from the morning was completely destroyed by the system’s words. Bai Ning lay on the bed with vacant eyes, completely emo.

But just as she lay down, a voice came from outside.

“Young lady, come down for dinner.”

The person calling Bai Ning was the housekeeper her family had hired, surnamed Li, around 50 years old. Although she was a woman, she was very capable and responsible for Bai Ning’s daily life and meals, she was the one who managed the household.

Hearing this, Bai Ning quickly propped herself up, snapped out of her emo state, and hurried downstairs.

“Coming!”

Things had come to this point, might as well eat first.

It wasn’t that Bai Ning was too gluttonous, but rather that Aunt Li’s cooking was simply too good. Bai Ning hadn’t eaten breakfast, and now her stomach was growling terribly.

Watching Bai Ning wolf down her food, Aunt Li felt somewhat helpless. She had been with the Bai family for over 20 years and had watched Bai Ning grow up. The head of the Bai family was very busy, so she had basically raised Bai Ning. Although she was technically a servant of the Bai family, she treated Bai Ning like her own child.

“Eat slower, don’t choke.”

“Mm-hmm.”

Bai Ning nodded but didn’t slow down her hands. Her mind was completely focused on eating now. She could neglect anything except her appetite. However, Aunt Li’s next words almost made her choke.

“While you were away, Miss Nan called today. She said she couldn’t reach your phone and asked you to call her back tonight.”

The moment she heard this, Bai Ning’s eyes widened instantly, and she choked from not paying attention.

“Cough, cough, cough.”

“Slow down, slow down.”

Seeing Bai Ning suddenly choke, Aunt Li anxiously walked to her side, picked up a glass of water and handed it to Bai Ning, while rhythmically patting her back with the other hand.

“What, what else did she say?”

After taking a sip of water and feeling better, Bai Ning urgently asked Aunt Li.

“She didn’t say much. Miss Nan just asked if you were home. After I said you weren’t, she only said to have you call her back when you got home.” Aunt Li paused here, her brow slightly furrowed.

“Young lady, Miss Nan seemed to be in a bad mood. Although I don’t know what happened, I think it’s better to call back quickly.”

Bai Ning hurriedly opened her phone. There were 5 or 6 missed calls glaring at her, all from the same person. Bai Ning almost couldn’t catch her breath. Only then did she realize that she had put her phone on silent mode when watching the movie in the afternoon and hadn’t turned the ringer back on until now.

Game over.

Bai Ning buried her head and wolfed down a big mouthful of rice, her face showing a trace of pain as she chewed vigorously.

Since everything was already ruined and she had left Nan Zha hanging for several hours, a few more minutes wouldn’t matter. She still had to eat, better to eat her fill before heading to her doom.

The meal was finished quickly. After eating, Bai Ning walked upstairs with a phone in hand, wearing an expression of facing death with dignity.

Watching Bai Ning’s reaction, Aunt Li sighed. She roughly knew what had happened.

Ever since a few months ago, when Bai Ning experienced a minor car accident, she seemed like a different person. Although she was still fundamentally the same kind and lovely young lady, her behavior had become somewhat abstract, and her preferences seemed to have developed some issues.

As long as the person was fine, all of this was acceptable. But for some reason, Bai Ning seemed fixated on the young lady of the Nan family, constantly trying to win her favor.

Everyone knew that Nan Zha was a career-oriented woman who didn’t care about such things at all, yet Bai Ning had persisted for several months. This made her worry about Bai Ning.

However, these matters didn’t have much to do with her. After all, she was just hired help, she had no right to speak up.

After busily cleaning up the things on the table, Aunt Li sat on the living room sofa and turned on the TV.

Bai Ning had been coming home infrequently these days, or very late, which gave her time to slack off.

While watching the melodramatic short drama on TV, she occasionally made tsk-tsk sounds of amazement.

“This woman is really inhuman, her wife is already pregnant, and she still goes out fooling around.”

“This mother-in-law is also a bad seed, taking advantage of her daughter’s absence to target her own daughter-in-law.”

“What? The daughter was watching through the door crack the whole time?”

Compared to Aunt Li’s happiness, Bai Ning was not so happy right now.
