Chapter 9: Handle Magic with Caution…

Magic is dangerous… Take note.

Mastering magic is challenging.

Since then, I’ve received magic lessons from the formidable instructor…

I mean, my mother. Yet, this is undeniably challenging.

At first, it was easy because it was basic magic, but it became too complicated from there.

In this world’s magic, there isn’t a fundamental rule stating, “Memorize this.”

It’s solely up to individuals who wish to commit it to memory, and even among those, some succeed while others struggle.

The absence of clear guidance adds to the challenge.

I began with a spell called Fireball, launching a fiery projectile, drawing on my familiarity with firearms from a previous life.

However, moving forward posed a challenge: navigating a vast magic book in search of the spells I desired.

It involves weighing factors like usability, firepower, range, and more, and even after choosing one, whether you can use it depends on the individual.

Opting for something attention-grabbing like, “I want it to be flashy!” makes acquisition more challenging as it becomes more extravagant.

The meaning of advanced magic and similar concepts have become elusive to me.

Despite explanations from books and guidance from my mother, obtaining them proved to be quite a challenging task.

Night after night, I tried to understand the theory and imagine it, but then the next day, I couldn’t really put it into practice.

It’s only recently that I’ve encountered this stumbling block.

“How about trying simpler magic?”

My mother suggests in a reassuring tone, but my response remains unchanged.

“I prioritize quality over quantity…”

Versatility, to begin with, has its drawbacks—it induces hesitation.

Undoubtedly, having the ability to wield numerous spells is advantageous, allowing for strategic combinations.

However, it also allows time for contemplation, which can prove fatal on the battlefield.

Having lived in that forest, I comprehend the urgency, leaving no room for pondering.

Hence, my current goal is to acquire magic that is effective in any situation.

Days not making much progress…

Unable to endure it, I obtained permission from my mother and father, took a day off, and decided to calm my mind.

It was during that time that I would have an amazing encounter… I didn’t know it back then.

Having nothing to do on my day off, and my sister out shopping with my mother, darn, there’s truly nothing to occupy myself with.

But, I don’t want to dwell on magic right now!

So, I opted to read a book— the one I borrowed. I selected the one with the least academic-sounding title, “Traveling the World” by Reynaldo Urius.

I started reading in the morning and continued without realizing the passage of time, gripping the book with sweaty palms.

How fascinating! Reynaldo, you’re truly amazing!

The essence of the book centers around three adventurers: Reynaldo, a proficient swordsman of the human race wielding a large sword; Luna, an elf mage adept with a bow; and Doll, a robust dwarf armed with an axe larger than his own body.

They traverse various parts of the world as adventurers, taking on quests to defeat different monsters.

Presumably a non-fiction book, it not only contains exciting episodes but also imparts knowledge about being an adventurer, camping tips, and details about the characteristics and weaknesses of monsters, making it highly informative.

Then, in a particular chapter, I was captivated.

It was a scene where Luna, a skilled elf in magic, imparts her magical knowledge to Reynaldo and Doll, who are not proficient in the art.

Luna shares her distinctive approach to mastering magic and simplifies the teachings of the elf tribe, renowned for their magical prowess, making it accessible for the two.

“In essence, magic is not about visible phenomena; it’s about understanding concepts! For example, to produce fire, instead of imagining fire, envision the phenomenon of igniting dried wood with your magical power instead of an actual fire, like using your own mana to ignite a substitute for dried wood. That’s the correct approach. If you apply this, you can turn a burning flame into a conflagration by adding more dried wood or more flammable material, or you can generate an explosion by merging fire magic with wind magic, envisioning the infusion of wind into the flames!”

I see, it’s all about concepts.

So, when I was able to shoot Fireball, it was because I knew about guns and understood the concept of igniting gunpowder by creating a spark and pushing it forward with an explosion.

And the reason I couldn’t use other magic stemmed from my failure to thoroughly grasp the concepts behind them.

Whether I can use it or not depends on aptitude and knowledge of concepts.

Viewing it from this perspective, it somehow feels right.

If that’s the case, as long as I have a clear mental image, I can use it too.

I left the book on the bed in my room and hurried to the training ground where I typically practice.

Today’s target is a large tree situated a bit away from its surroundings.

The envisioned image is… a cannon.

Different from a gun.

The size of the released substance, the amount of combustion material, and the supporting structure are all significantly sturdy and large.

First, imagine the main body of the cannon.

What is released is not a shell but a large ball of flames.

Use compressed air instead of combustible material.

Use the supporting barrel to control the wind around it.

Ignite the compressed and solidified ball of flames with compressed air as a substitute for combustible material and push it forward by causing an explosion.

Now… release it!!!

Infuse strength into your legs and thrust both arms forward.

A magic circle forms, enveloping your palms.

A fusion of wind and fire magic.

Alright, don’t miss the target! Go!!!

BOOM!!!

“Ping 【Acquired Attack Magic [Flame Cannon]】”

I gazed at the blazing tree and laughed triumphantly.

It’s done!

I did it!!

Flame Cannon!!!

Incredibleeee!!!

What power!!!!

While I was impressed, I quickly regained composure.

Uh-oh!!! It’s burning like crazy.

I hurriedly approached the blazing tree, which had lost its original shape, and thought about water, water.

Imagining a massive waterfall flowing, I pictured water descending from the mountain and cascading over the tree through an imaginary waterfall above it, extinguishing the tree with water at an astonishing speed, and released the magic.

Bashaaaan!!!

Dooo!!!

“Ding 【Acquired Attack Magic [Water Manipulation]】”

Somehow, the flames were extinguished, and a vast puddle formed in the surroundings.

Collapsed on the spot, I reproached myself for not planning ahead.

That was a close call, almost sparked a significant fire…

The maids and butlers who hurried to the scene exclaimed.

“W-What happened, Lord Arus!”

“I’m really sorry. My excitement got the better of me, and I unleashed an intermediate-level magic with high firepower.”

“What!?”

After receiving a scolding from my mother, who returned with my sister, I, of course, earned praise for the successful execution of the intermediate-level magic.

“But seriously, I saw it. That giant tree exploding. What kind of magic did you cast?”

During dinner with my father and everyone that evening, my father, while smiling wryly, seemed somewhat gentle, as if understanding I had been lectured.

“It was simply a miscalculation in firepower. I used wind magic to compress air instead of combustible material, which raised the firepower. But in doing so, I compressed the air too much, resulting in an unimaginable power.”

I hung my head.

“Huh? Can you even handle compound magic now?”

Triden was genuinely surprised.

“Arus, you have incredible talent, but you need to plan ahead, okay? It’s impressive that you can handle compound magic, and I am proud of you for that. But, seeing that tree, it’s evident you cast an excessively powerful spell. Next time, think before you use it!”

Although my mother wasn’t angry anymore, she was clearly exasperated.

Magic is dangerous!!

Take note, take note…
