Chapter 55: Dragons and Dragonkin Are Different Beings
Across the vast expanse of the grassland, devoid of anything but its sheer vastness, stood facing each other a young man with remnants of a youthful aura about him, his hair platinum blond, and a gentleman with a mature presence, his hair black.
To any onlooker, it would seem as though the young man vanished in an instant.
With such speed, the young man closed in on the black-haired man and swiftly drew a menacing black sword.
But as if it were routine, the man effortlessly caught the tip of the sword with just his right index finger and thumb.
With a sharp sound, a tremendous wind swept through the surroundings in the aftermath.
Yet the man remained nonchalant, as if casually catching a small insect, evident in the stifled yawn he suppressed.
Releasing the caught sword tip, the man instantly delivered a powerful kick towards the young man.
However, even this movement would be incomprehensible to any bystander. If there were spectators, they might have thought the man briefly blurred, such was the speed of his strike.
The young man was sent flying, already distant.
Yet, somehow, he managed to grasp the ground, creating linear craters around him as he came to a halt.
“You’ve gotten faster. But that’s all,” remarked the black-haired man.
“You’re still… a monster,” the young man replied.
“A monster? No, a dragon,” the man clarified.
Their exchange was brief.
Following this, the intensity of their battle only escalated.
Craters multiplied across the grassland from the shockwaves, and magical beasts and creatures in the distance fled from the pressure.
This place, rightly deemed hellish, lay on the outskirts of the Dragon Lord Kingdom, a vast grassland of the dragon realm.
Then, for several hours, the intense battle at that location continued unabated.
At times, meteors fell.
At times, fierce lightning struck down.
At times, flames raged as if signaling the end of the world.
At times, the entire vicinity was blown away without warning.
Such battles had been ongoing for several months now.
Too powerful.
It wasn’t the first time I had thought so.
Since I began battling Baldello, the former king of the Dragon Lord Kingdom, I had been thinking the same thing.
I wasn’t being conceited.
But I understood my own strength as well.
However, Baldello was truly a monster.
Strength was irrelevant.
No attack could penetrate him.
He could nearly kill me, boasting impenetrable defenses.
To think such an existence existed, the world was vast indeed.
“You’re really coming along, huh? Learning faster than your father did. And you’ve got talent too,” remarked the gentleman, looking down at me, sprawled exhausted on the grassland without taking a single breath.
Seeing him, I let out another sigh.
“You truly are… a monster,” I muttered.
“I’m a dragon…”
“Once again, it seems you’ve been thoroughly outdone by your father, Arus.”
When Arus and Baldello returned to the castle where Arus stayed, King Luze of the Dragon Lord Kingdom greeted them with a wry smile, seeing the exhausted Arus.
“Your father is a monster, Your Majesty,” Arus remarked wearily.
“I feel like I hear that every day,” Luze responded, slightly amused.
“Who’s a monster? I’m a dragon,” Baldello retorted.
“Is that the issue, Father?” Arus asked.
The castle was located in the capital of the Dragon Lord Kingdom. When Baldello had said that Arus could stay there, Arus had expected it to be a den of all sorts of creatures. However, despite being a dragon kingdom, this country, with its many dragonkin, wasn’t much different from human or demon countries in appearance.
Still, it took some time to get used to the atmosphere, with dragons constantly flying overhead and dragons scattered everywhere.
“How is Arus, Father?” Luze asked.
“The boy has immense talent. With a little more time, he’ll grow to be someone you can’t even compare to,” Baldello replied.
“Hmm…” Arus felt uncomfortable being looked at with such warm eyes, especially considering that Luze, being Baldello’s son, was already quite strong. It was evident from his demeanor and aura. Although Arus had only seen him in humanoid form, Baldello had mentioned that Luze was considered the strongest in the Dragon Lord Kingdom after himself.
That made Arus wonder if he could truly become that strong.
After arriving in the Dragon Lord Kingdom, Arus learned that there were slight differences between dragons and dragonkin, and their hierarchy within the dragon ranks was related to that.
The highest-ranking were the dragons who could take on humanoid forms…
ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
Dragons (High-ranking beings capable of taking humanoid form):
Dragons (Understand language and can converse)
Dragonkin (Beings capable of taking dragon form):
Dragonkin
Dragons (Mid-ranking beings):
Dragons (Understand language but cannot speak human language)
Dragons (Low-ranking beings):
Dragons (Do not understand human language)
ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
As you can see from this, dragons capable of taking humanoid form and dragonkin are distinct entities, and even among dragonkin, those capable of assuming dragon form are also separate.
It is said that dragonkin originated from the offspring of high-ranking dragons who took humanoid form and humans, but whether dragons came first or dragonkin did is honestly not fully understood.
However, because of this belief, dragonkin are considered lower in rank compared to dragons capable of humanoid form or high-ranking dragons.
As another hypothesis, some suggest that dragons who took humanoid form became unable to revert to dragon form and thus became dragonkin. However, this theory isn’t widely accepted in the Dragon Lord Kingdom.
