Chapter 28: Conspiracy
Currently, the war between the Rosen Kingdom and the Demon Kingdom, which has invaded the kingdom, is being waged primarily on three fronts: east, north, and west.
Especially on the northern front, the scale of the battle is much larger compared to other battlefields, with two generals currently leading the charge there: Longzman and Reynard.
However, with these two generals present, morale remains high, and the ferocity of the battle does not pale in comparison to that of the Demon Kingdom.
The balance, however, was disrupted in a manner unexpectedly abrupt.
“Hahaha… Longzman… what is the meaning of this?”
Keires Reynard swallowed hard as he looked alternately at the sword thrust into his abdomen and at Longzman in front of him.
“Hahaha… there is no need for those who are dying to know. You have become an obstacle to us… that’s all the explanation you need.”
Upon closer consideration, the formation in today’s battle was off from the start.
The movements of Baron Longzman and his subordinates deviated from the plan.
With no time to worry, Keires found himself surrounded by Longzman’s men, with his own men keeping their distance, and then impaled by a sword.
Blood flowed endlessly from the wound where the sword was pulled out by hand.
“Betrayal…?”
“Betrayal? Not quite. The irregularity stemmed from the fact that ‘it’ still existed and your involvement with it. It was decided from above to pretend none of it ever happened.”
“‘It’… involvement? What are you talking about?”
“You don’t need to know. Don’t worry, your family will follow you soon… Then you won’t be lonely.”
This guy… he’s serious.
Could the same thing be happening to my family?
“Marie, Mel, and Arus too, killed for something they don’t understand? No way! There’s no excuse for that!! Damn it… damn it all!!”
Shouted Keires, suddenly changing his expression to a smirk.
His transformation made those around him take a step back.
His eyes turned bloodshot, his body swelled by about two sizes, and he emitted a menacing aura from head to toe.
Keires’ ability to continue rising through the ranks at such a young age was due to this power.
“You’re still moving?… Using a berserker at the last moment, what a troublesome man you are!”
“Aaaargh!! I’ll kill you all!!”
Keires roared, kicking Longzman in front of him and swiftly cutting down Longzman’s subordinates who surrounded him one after another.
“He’s on his last legs!! Kill him!!!”
Soldiers rushed in, but they momentarily hesitated as Keires’ sword emitted a tremendous light.
“The Heaven’s Blade…”
Longzman gritted his teeth.
Keires’ sword, now a sword of light, struck down the soldiers surrounding him in one blow.
Longzman quickly readied his beloved axe strapped to his back.
“Just die already!!! Reynard!!”
“I’ll kill you!!!”
The clash of the sword and the axe echoed with a deafening roar, causing a tremendous sandstorm to erupt on the battlefield.
Keires’ sword was enveloped in light as he charged towards Longzman like the wind.
Despite Longzman’s renowned toughness, he was on the defensive against this onslaught.
Keires kicked off the ground, swiftly closing the distance to Longzman, and leaped to strike from above.
Longzman managed to block it with his axe, but…
“What… da-damn it… Aaargh!”
Longzman collapsed to his knees, seeing the gash across his abdomen and the splatter of blood.
In a split second, Keires changed the trajectory of his sword mid-leap, cutting down Longzman with a horizontal swipe. Even amidst his red-eyed intensity, Keires couldn’t help but smirk.
“I never imagined Arus’s technique would save me in a place like this…”
“W-What’s going on here?!!”
Keires’ subordinates rushed over.
What to do… for now,
“He’s the traitor who attacked me. Take him into custody and send him to the capital. More importantly, bring Mash here immediately.”
I can’t reveal everything right now.
From his demeanor, this seems like a trap set to ensnare me.
When he said “above,” he must have been referring to the higher-ups of this country.
Escaping with this wound is impossible.
But if I fall back for healing, there’s a risk of getting surrounded.
That’s why I urgently called for Mash, a long-serving subordinate skilled in healing.
I was quickly treated by Mash, who arrived hastily at the nearby open space.
As the commotion settled and Mash, who had cleared the area, approached me, he began to speak.
“What’s going on? Why did Longzman, the Border Count, do this?”
“Mash. We’re short on time. I’ll give you a brief explanation, so listen quietly.
From the start of today’s battle, Longzman’s movements were suspicious. Before I knew it, I was surrounded, and then Longzman caught me off guard with a sword thrust. He said I was getting in the way. Moreover, it wasn’t betrayal; it was the decision of the higher-ups. It seems I was unwittingly involved in something serious.”
“What? The higher-ups targeting a General? That’s unbelievable. And what do you mean by something serious?”
“I don’t know. But he didn’t seem to be lying. And he mentioned wiping out my family. Damn it, what’s going on?!”
“I understand the situation now. However, if the agents of the higher-ups are already heading to the General’s mansion, we might not make it in time from here…”
“So you’re saying we should just abandon them?! My family might be killed, you know!?”
“I see… In that case, let’s use this.”
Mash produced a bracelet.
“That’s… a teleportation magical tool…”
“This is a treasured heirloom of our family. However, it can only be used once. With this, we can go to the General’s mansion, quickly bring your family, and escape.”
“But that’s such a valuable item…”
“It’s fine… The General has saved my life many times… Please let me do this.”
Keires accepted the bracelet from Mash.
However, at that moment, remnants of Longzman’s troops were approaching.
“I’ve found Keires Reynard!!”
“Capture him! Kill him on the spot!!!”
“Please, go quickly. I’ll handle things here.”
Mash smiled kindly and patted Keires on the shoulder.
“But…”
“I don’t have a wife or children. The General and our comrades are my only family. Isn’t it natural to help when a family is in trouble? So please, go! Go quickly. And let’s meet again someday, General.”
With a gentle smile, Mash urged Keires to leave as he activated the bracelet, channeling magic into it and visualizing their destination.
A magic circle appeared beneath their feet, enveloping them in light.
Mash was surrounded by dozens of soldiers, enduring a relentless assault. However, he fought back with magic and sword.
Blood spurted from Mash’s shoulder, a sword pierced his back, and he fell to one knee.
“Mash!!!!”
Keires shouted.
“General!!!! You were the best superior!!!”
Without looking back, Keires shed tears at Mash’s heartfelt words.
Light enveloped the area, and when Keires opened his eyes again, he found himself near the mansion.
“Mash!!!!”
Damn it… Damn it!!!!
What the hell is happening!!
With a sense of regret weighing heavily on him, Keires ran nonetheless. He sprinted at full speed, aiming for the mansion. However…
“Hey… this… can’t be true, right?”
What Keires saw was the mansion engulfed in flames. Armed soldiers stood in front of the mansion, numbering close to several dozen.
Is this necessary?
What did I do wrong!!!
Keires drew his sword.
Enough already!! I’ll kill every last one of them!!
As Keires was about to dash forward, he felt his arm being pulled to the side, leading him down a side path.
“Huh?”
There stood the person who pulled his arm… Marie in a hooded robe, and on the opposite side, Mel, holding Marie’s hand.
“We can talk later! For now, let’s just get out of here.”
Keires then put on the robe handed to him by Marie, and with the help of Marie’s magic, they quickly moved away from the scene.
Once they reached the town, Marie used money taken from the mansion to buy horses and a carriage from the stable. They rode into the deserted forest.
“So, what’s going on?”
Marie asked Keires as she stroked Mel’s head with a concerned expression.
That’s when Keires explained the situation with Longzman.
“So, something inconvenient exists, and you were somehow involved in it? Any idea what it might be?”
“I have no clue. But for Longzman to boldly go this far suggests even His Majesty might be involved at some level.”
“Then leaving the country is our only option. But what about Arus? He’s still on the battlefield, right? How do we reunite with him?”
“It’s going to be quite difficult, but with you and me, we might manage somehow.”
“Well, I don’t think it’s impossible…”
“There’s a chance he’s already under attack…”
Keires hangs his head.
“But I’m sure he’ll be fine. After all, he’s smart and capable! He’ll definitely make it!”
“Yeah, you’re right. We just have to believe.”
