Chapter 16: Is It Such a Big Deal?

During a certain lunch break, the four of us – me, Maria, Mira, and Torus – finished our meal and were relaxing in the courtyard.

“Maria, what made you decide to join the Officer’s Academy?”

Mira, who was sitting on the grass, asked Maria, who was sitting on a bench.

“Well, it’s not that I aspire to be an officer and join the military. I enrolled here because I have my eyes set on becoming the chief court mage!”

“The chief court mage? Isn’t that extremely difficult?”

“Yeah… even if you graduate from the Officer’s Academy and join the military’s mage unit, reaching the position of chief court mage is considered as challenging as an ordinary person graduating from the academy, joining the military, and becoming a lieutenant colonel.”

“Really? Is it that difficult?”

Torus, who had been lying in the grass listening to the conversation, sat up and looked at Maria.

“Furthermore, becoming the top mage out of only ten is equivalent to becoming a general.”

“Wow, Maria, you’re quite ambitious!”

“Do you think so? Then, Mira, why did you decide to attend the Officer’s Academy?”

“Well, you see, my family is from a merchant lineage… considering the future, the best path would probably be to become a concubine of some noble, right? But I don’t like the idea of something so dull, and I’ve always liked studying. Besides, I learned martial arts from my father, a former adventurer, since I was a child. So I thought, why not choose a path where I have the possibility of success on my own?”

Mira spoke, gazing into the distance.

Well, becoming a concubine does sound a bit awkward.

“Compared to that, Arus, you’re like the elite of elites, right?”

“Huh? Do you think so?”

When Mira mentioned it, I looked around, questioning if I really fit the definition of elite.

“That’s right, Aniki. Aniki’s father is the current general, you know?”

“And isn’t your mother the former chief court mage? That’s undeniably elite. Even if they don’t know your character, those higher-ups will have expectations based solely on that.”

Torus and Maria said, and hearing that, I had to admit that it might be true.

“Were you not aware of it? How oblivious can you be… Your father is the renowned national strongest swordsman, the current general, Keires Reynard, and your mother is the former chief court mage, the enchanting sorceress Marie Reynard. Even as a merchant’s daughter, I’m familiar with their reputation. And you, their son, who not only passed first in theoretical studies at the country’s top school but also excelled in practical skills! Both in martial arts and magic, you’re number one. You’re nothing but an elite… really, how blessed can someone be?”

I couldn’t discern whether Mira was praising or scolding me from her tone, but I had to admit that I was indeed fortunate.

“Hey, Arus, how did you manage to learn intermediate magic so easily? Last time I asked, you said it was self-taught, but is that even possible?”

Mira asked me, and both Maria and Torus directed their gaze at me, with Maria, in particular, looking at me with keen interest.

“Well, it’s self-taught. I just read magic books, practiced, and acquired the skills.”

“Is it really that simple to acquire intermediate magic from magic books, Maria?”

“No way. Typically, you’d have a magic mentor guiding you every step of the way! Is there some secret or trick to it?”

Then, I explained to the three of them about the concept of Luna that I read in a book.

“So, mastering magic is possible if you grasp the concept?”

Mira tilted her head, expressing both surprise and skepticism.

However, Maria appeared to have caught on to something else.

“Hey, could it be that if that’s true, you can develop your own magic with a concept?”

“Huh?”

Is that really possible?
“If you comprehend the concept, magic can manifest, even beyond existing spells… I haven’t tested it, but it’s not an implausible idea.”

“Hmm, wait a moment… I’m going to try.”

“Try!?”

Hmm, something not found in the magic books but that could be understood as a concept.

There seemed to be something appropriate from my past life.

The principle of sound perception, or something along those lines.

I feel like I saw it in a documentary.

When an object vibrates, the air is pushed by the vibration, causing the compressed air to become denser.

This denser air pushes the nearby air further, creating a movement that results in areas of dense and sparse air, giving rise to “sound waves.”

If I remember correctly, that was the principle of sound.

Could that be applied to wind magic?

In other words, using wind magic to eliminate vibrations and mute sound…

Well, I understand the concept, so I believe it’s possible, but…

The magic name at the time of activation… Hmm, soundless? Silent? Well, either could work.

Alright, let’s build this in my mind…

Hmm, will this work out?

No, but if I infuse magic here with magical power, and tweak this part like this…

“…Rus… Hey, Arus! Are you listening?”

I snapped back to reality at Maria’s voice.

“Don’t suddenly go silent and mutter to yourself… it’s creepy, you know.”

Mira also protested.

It seems I was lost in my thoughts and completely ignored the ongoing conversation.

“Sorry, sorry! But I did it! An original magic not found in magic books.”

“Huh? So quickly? You’re kidding, right?”

Maria’s eyes widened, utterly astonished.

Mira and Torus were in the same state.

“Well then, want to give it a try? You just have to keep talking about whatever!”

Everyone reluctantly started discussing trivial matters while tilting their heads.

I heightened my focus in my mind and went over the constructed concept.

“What did you do on your day off, Maria?”

“I went back to my parents’ house! What about you, Mira?”

“I studied and took a stroll around the town! And you, Torus?”

“Alright, Silent!”

“……!?……!?”

“!?…”

“!…??”

All sounds in the surrounding area vanished completely.

It was a world of silence.

Oh! I did it!

Alright, let’s cancel it.

“What? What was that just now?”

“The sound… disappeared!”

“What’s going on! A magic that makes sound vanish??”

Everyone stood up in amazement.

“Yeah! There was no magic that could make sound disappear, but somehow, I understood the principle of sound transmission, so I interfered with that transmitted vibration using magic to make it vanish! Surprisingly doable! Maria, it’s amazing! This is a new discovery!”

“The amazing one is definitely you, Arus! This is beyond comprehension! Is it really that easy to interfere and make vibrations disappear? Isn’t this magic an incredible invention?”

“Aniki, this is seriously mind-blowing.”

However, after achieving it, I sensed that there might be complications later on.

“If someone else finds out about this, it could be a big problem for Arus in the school, right? I heard that creating a new magic structure happens only once every few hundred years! At that time, I didn’t care because I didn’t know how it was done, but if word gets out that you made it, it could cause a major uproar, couldn’t it?”

Maria held her head in her hands.

“Is it such a big deal?”

“For now, let’s pretend this never happened.”

Mira looked at everyone and nodded.

“Uh, yeah,” said Torus.

“Yeah…” I replied.

“That’s right,” added Maria.

And just like that, I stashed away that significant achievement I accomplished without much thought deep within my heart.
