Xia Xiuyin and Fang Duan were blood-related, and the latter knew very well where the former’s sore spot was; every jab landed swiftly and ruthlessly, each word like a blade.

Xia Xiuyin had asked Xia Zhen to go to Macao, but she suddenly signed up for a youth volunteer event at the last minute and flew to Beijing to become a museum tour guide instead. As she rushed to Macao with her certificate, she received a text message from Fang Duan with several photos attached.

Did you know there’s another child in her belly?

At an altitude of tens of thousands of meters, Xia Xiuyin clutched tightly onto her shirt collar, feeling her organs shatter into pieces. She could almost see blood gushing from her mouth and nose, drowning her in this chilly March weather.

“You… are nothing but a monster.” Fang Duan’s gaze fell onto her with disgust; her father knew exactly how to hurt her the most. “Your mother and pitiful sister both died because of you.”

A deafening noise filled Xia Xiuyin’s ears. She held her expression steady, watching Fang Duan’s twisted features, like a demon stripped of its skin.

She couldn’t hear what Fang Duan said next. Water flooded into the mansion, sealing her surroundings, and all sounds disappeared.

“Sister…” Amidst the deathly silence, Xia Yu’s eyes appeared before her, filled with hope yet timid, dependable yet wary, triggering a thirst within her.

The child’s eyes were beautiful; the ends of her eyes curved slightly at the corners, giving her an air of intelligence even when she held back tears.

Xia Xiuyin’s heart slowly calmed, as if the tide had receded, washing away all the noise and returning everything to its source.

Fang Duan’s chest was covered in kiss marks, but his expression was stern as he scolded her, “The one who have brain problem is your mother, not you. Living together with an unknown wild child? Are you crazy?”

The scene was almost comical, considering he was still attempting to act like her superior even at a time like this.

Watching him, Xia Xiuyin laughed.

Fang Duan’s expression stiffened, growing visibly uncomfortable.

Fang Duan’s dislike for Xia Xiuyin was no less than his hatred for Xia Zhen; it wasn’t just because of their similar features, but more so because of her mature demeanor that shocked him to his core.

Who could have imagined that Xia Xiuyin, who received the message on the plane, would arrive in Macao with several elders from the old house and a top-tier lawyer?

This level of foresight—could a child mourning the loss of her father possibly possess such sharp insight?

Under the tense atmosphere, Xia Xiuyin spoke up, “Dad, are some of your gold cards frozen?”

The quality of Fang Duan’s female companion last night had been significantly lower than usual.

Fang Duan almost couldn’t maintain his expression; the little bit of dignity he had regained earlier vanished within an instant.

In his displeasure and anger, he spat, “Did you do this?”

Xia Xiuyin’s eyes curved as she smiled, a gentle expression Xia Zhen would never don. She invited Li Conghao to sit, then poured him a cup of tea, her every movement measured and composed. “Can you help Xia Yu solve his residential issue today, Dad?” Her tone was sincere and naive, as if she was simply a young girl asking her father to fulfill a wish.

Fang Duan shivered, feeling an inexplicable chill. He had survived years under Xia Zhen’s shadow, his dignity long shattered, but he once believed he could easily manipulate the unpolished Xia Xiuyin.

Yet things never went as planned.

Fang Duan met Xia Xiuyin’s gaze, but the corners of her eyes lifted little, and no trace of a smile lingered in her pupils. Her eyes were a stagnant pond, undisturbed by any ripples.

In the end, Fang Duan conceded. His face, which had grown used to putting on an act, finally gave in and smiled. “Of course. This time, I’ll make sure to fulfill Xiuyin’s every request.”

Xia Xiuyin was satisfied. She turned to Li Conghao. “Xia Yu is quite frail and needs rest, so he may not be able to join… If there are any documents that need to be filled out, please help us, Dr. Li.”

Li Conghao nodded blankly.

Then, Xia Xiuyin retrieved a DSLR camera from a cabinet, called for a servant to accompany her into a guest room, and emerged with several headshots of Xia Yu.

Aunt Chen prepared a lunch in the kitchen, bringing a touch of warmth and familiarity to the cold mansion.

Li Conghao followed Fang Duan, who still had an angry expression on his face, out the door. His shirt was drenched in sweat; he felt as if he’d just returned from the dead, reborn after surviving a calamity.

After Fang Duan left, Xia Xiuyin’s expression grew cold again. She took a sip of tea, waiting until her expression eased before entering the guest room.

Xia Yu knelt on the floor, placing the last few puzzle pieces with her head lowered, her expression focused and determined, her long eyelashes flickering, looking endearingly cute.

There was only one piece left. Xia Yu held it in her palm, hesitating slightly as she glanced toward the door, only to meet Xia Xiuyin’s smiling gaze. Her pupils contracted before expanding again, unable to contain her small excitement. Xia Yu carefully placed the puzzle piece, then withdrew her hands, holding the hem of her skirt nervously as she looked at Xia Xiuyin.

Awaiting a promise, awaiting praise, awaiting a hug.

Xia Xiuyin gave her a promise. “You’ll always be with me.”

Then gave her praise. “You’ve pieced it together very well. You’re very smart, and very sweet.”

Finally, she wrapped Xia Yu gently in her arms, enveloping the girl in the refreshing scent of citrus fruits. Xia Yu’s nose prickled slightly.

“Sister…” Xia Yu reached out, her small hand carefully stroking the long hair on Xia Xiuyin’s shoulder.

“Do you like the name Xia Yu?” Xia Xiuyin pressed her forehead to Xia Yu’s, nuzzling her reddened cheeks.

Xia Yu’s eyes were filled with a shallow pool of tears, glistening like diamonds, as if they would overflow at the slightest touch. She stared unblinkingly at Xia Xiuyin, then finally made a small sound of acknowledgment.

Xia Xiuyin stroked her half-grown hair. “What a good girl.”

They held each other for a while, both quiet, until a small struggle emerged from within the embrace. Xia Yu, holding half a piece of pineapple cake, held it out to Xia Xiuyin, her black eyes glistening with soft anticipation.

Xia Xiuyin couldn’t refuse. “Did you save this for me?” she asked with a smile.

Noticing the movement in the room, Aunt Chen entered with a tray of food.

Xia Yu didn’t respond but gently nudged the plate toward Xia Xiuyin.

Xia Xiuyin’s heart warmed at the sight of Xia Yu’s sweet appearance, and she picked up a small piece with her fork, savoring the rich and sweet flavor of the cooled pineapple crisp.

“Delicious,” she said.

Xia Yu’s eyes filled with joy.

Xia Xiuyin picked up more and held the fork out to Xia Yu.

“Darling, do you want more?”

With her face reddened, Xia Yu slowly took the small piece of pineapple crisp into her mouth.

After getting into the car, Fang Duan exploded in anger. Li Conghao, sitting on the passenger side, saw Liu Zhi’s unusually calm expression, as if he were already used to this.

Once Fang Duan calmed down, he flipped open his phone, then asked to be let out as soon as the car entered the city center.

“Mr. Fang, that child’s household registration…” Li Conghao awkwardly spoke up.

“What’s the rush?” Fang Duan shot him a glance before slamming the car door shut. “Someone will take care of it.”

After Liu Zhi’s car disappeared, Fang Duan gave him a call.

“Xia Man, get your ID and household registration book and get the hell to the civil administration office. Wait there for Liu Zhi.”

Xia Xiuyin wanted to adopt a wild kid to replace her sister? Dream on. If she really wanted comfort, he could help her get her mother back.
