- Chapter 93 - The Earth: I’m on it!
Because of Caroline’s remark, Jing Qizhen didn’t return Old Xiao’s phone to him but handed it over to David instead.
David accepted it happily. “Thanks!”
Caroline’s voice remained anxious, “David, how are things over there? Are you okay?”
David replied briefly, “Two groups of attackers have been caught. The suspicious bodyguard has also been caught. For now, I’m fine.”
Caroline let out a slight sigh of relief but warned, “Get out of there quickly! Your villa is a sitting duck right now!”
She didn’t need to say it; everyone else had already realized that.
David, with a touch of self-deprecation, said, “My bodyguards have turned against me. I suspect my other properties are also compromised.”
Caroline: “Come to my place—”
Jing Qizhen interrupted their conversation, “Your close relationship is well-known. If David’s place isn’t safe, your place might not be reliable either.”
Caroline hesitated for a moment on the other end. “Then what do you suggest?”
Jing Qizhen looked at Tang Song, confident that Tang Song was far more professional than David or Caroline.
Tang Song didn’t say much. He simply smiled slightly and said, “Follow me for now. This villa is indeed too obvious a target. We need to leave. As for you—”
Looking at David’s gloomy expression, Tang Song’s voice carried a calm and reassuring tone, “We’ll do the job we’re paid for.”
After being betrayed by his bodyguard, David clearly didn’t think highly of ‘mercenaries’ like Tang Song, who appeared to work solely for money. However, the group led by Tang Song and Jing Qizhen had indeed entered the erosion area, rescued Caroline and been attacked alongside him. Their interests were temporarily aligned and most importantly, they were highly professional.
David exhaled deeply, feeling slightly reassured.
Caroline on the phone also seemed to calm down, though she was still puzzled. “Why are these people targeting David?”
Tang Song: “We’ll need to interrogate them to find out, Miss Caroline.”
Gu Leshan muttered under his breath, “If those attackers were just doing a paid job, they might not know anything…”
Jing Qizhen thought that made sense. After all, the attacker who used the rifle was clearly aiming to kill with one shot. If not for the help of the Earth’s extraordinary assistance, such long-range attempts would have been nearly impossible to thwart.
By comparison, the bodyguard who tried to deceive David might know a bit more.
Meanwhile, the Earth had already scanned the surrounding area and confidently reported to Jing Qizhen’s mind, “There’s no sign of suspicious attackers within a three-kilometer radius. No one is armed and aiming and no sneaky Super Mario plumbers are hiding out. Oh, oh, oh! There are police! I see three police cars heading this way. They’ll arrive in about five minutes!”
Jing Qizhen relayed the last part aloud.
With a mole among his bodyguards and his current distrust of anyone around him, David naturally couldn’t rely on his staff to coordinate with the police as originally planned.
Realizing that, David quickly informed Caroline.
Caroline immediately decided, “I’ll have someone liaise with the police. The reason will be that you were attacked on-site and your bodyguard took you to a safer location to avoid danger.”
David looked at Jing Qizhen and the others. “What do you think?”
Jing Qizhen blinked. “I think we have about three minutes to get out of here.”
Hearing that, Gu Leshan immediately grabbed the bodyguard he had beaten bloody and threw him not into the trunk, but under the car seat. The position made it easier to control the bodyguard and harder for him to struggle.
There were quite a few people but fortunately, Tang Song had driven over in a minibus earlier, which was loaded with weapons and ammunition. Even Lu Lingxi’s sniper rifle was inside.
The moment Lu Lingxi retrieved his favorite weapon, his spirits lifted. Holding his rifle steady, he found a window and began observing the area covertly.
The Earth piped up, “I’ll warn you if there’s an attack!”
Jing Qizhen calmly said to Lu Lingxi, “Babyball said it’ll activate a wallhack for you if needed later.”
Lu Lingxi hesitated. “…Babyball… huh, how cute.”
In fact, Lu Lingxi had almost blurted out ‘muah!’ just now but since his direct superior, Tang Song, was present, he decided to restrain himself a bit.
In the car, thanks to the Earth’s surveillance assistance, even after several attacks, everyone’s mood wasn’t overly tense.
David glanced at Tang Song but didn’t ask where he planned to drive the minibus.
Things were already so bad; how much worse could it get?
Seeing the tablet in Manman’s hand, David took the initiative to ask, “Can I borrow your tablet? I need to prepare three copies of an electronic contract.”
Manman fully understood David’s thinking. After all, sitting idle wasn’t helpful, so they might as well sign contracts to put everyone at ease.
David was rich and very aware of the value of his life, willing to spend money to protect it.
Without hesitation, Manman handed him the tablet, casually asking, “Three copies?”
David’s thoughts were clear and he didn’t hesitate when arranging his affairs. “For me, you guys and Caroline as the third party. If I do die, she can handle the follow-up for me.”
Everyone in the car: “…”
Jing Qizhen could tell that this guy was extremely attached to life, yet not afraid of death. His obsession with handling his estate after death was almost pathological, insisting that Caroline manage everything properly…
Because of David’s thorough planning, the group once again fell into an awkward silence.
After a while, it was David himself who broke the quiet, having finished preparing the contracts on Manman’s tablet.
David waved the tablet in his hand. “The electronic contracts are ready. I used the account from the rescue agreement you provided earlier. No issues, right? I’ve also included the commission Caroline just paid for buying intelligence from you. Who’s signing? Actually, forget it. I’ll transfer the payment directly and you can sign the contracts later.”
Everyone in the car: “…”
The second batch of easy money came too smoothly, leaving everyone speechless for a moment.
Manman glanced around and noticed that the others seemed unsure of what to do. She took the initiative to retrieve her tablet, quickly reviewing the contract terms. After confirming that both the payment amount and Caroline’s commission were satisfactory, she nodded.
Manman handed the tablet to Jing Qizhen and gestured toward Tang Song.
Jing Qizhen immediately understood and asked Tang Song, “Will you sign?”
Tang Song nodded. “I’ll sign it in a bit!”
Since the previous rescue contract had also been signed by Tang Song using an alias, he decided to continue with the same approach.
After all, it didn’t matter what name was used as long as the commission was successfully deposited.
With that settled, the group felt a bit closer to the proactive David and Caroline, and they started chatting again.
Gu Leshan, with nothing better to do, reached under the seat and pulled out the bound bodyguard. He unscrewed a bottle of mineral water, initially intending to splash it on the bodyguard to wake him up. However, realizing that cleaning up water inside the minibus would be inconvenient, he gave up on the idea.
Noticing this, Jing Qizhen suggested, “How about opening the car window for some fresh air? It might wake him up too.”
Gu Leshan nodded enthusiastically. “Sounds good to me.”
Lu Lingxi, who had been keeping watch by the window, immediately opened the window just a crack, about two or three centimeters. Seeing that, Gu Leshan adjusted the bodyguard’s position so his head could feel the breeze but not enough to expose him to anyone outside.
When the toothless bodyguard finally regained consciousness, Lu Lingxi quickly closed the window again.
Without removing the gag from the bodyguard’s mouth, Gu Leshan said, “I’ll ask the questions. Nod or shake your head to answer.”
The bodyguard, unable to speak and still in shock, stared nervously at the unfamiliar Gu Leshan.
David noticed the scene and reached out to pat Old Xiao on the shoulder, intending to switch seats with him. However, Jing Qizhen silently stopped him.
Both David and Old Xiao were momentarily puzzled.
Jing Qizhen stepped between the bodyguard and David, ensuring the bodyguard couldn’t see David. After all, when the bodyguard had arrived at the villa earlier, Gu Leshan had taken him down immediately. At the time, David had been hiding with the non-combat personnel and hadn’t been in the bodyguard’s line of sight.
Turning to the bodyguard, Jing Qizhen asked with interest, “Was your target also David? How unfortunate. It seems our objectives conflict.”
Hearing him, the bodyguard’s expression grew even more anxious.
The bodyguard wasn’t a long-time infiltrator around David. Since he wasn’t a plant from the beginning, it was clear he had betrayed David for money.
If he was willing to sell out his employer, David, for money, it stood to reason he’d betray whoever wanted to capture David to save his own life.
After just a few exchanges, David caught on to Jing Qizhen’s implications and cooperated by staying silent, leaning back in his seat with a cold smile directed at the clueless bodyguard.
From the bodyguard’s perspective, it was obvious Jing Qizhen and his group had gotten to David first. Perhaps they had overheard his phone call with David and had waited for him to arrive, taking advantage of the situation.
The Earth, observing Jing Qizhen’s deception, was entertained and mentally cheered him on, “Go, Little Jing! You’ve got this!”
Jing Qizhen signaled for the Earth to stay calm and reminded it, “Babyball, we’re counting on you to monitor the surroundings.”
The Earth reassured him, “I’m watching! Everything’s clear. Tang Song really picked a remote route!”
Satisfied, Jing Qizhen turned back to the bodyguard and smiled slowly. “I’m only interested in the people behind you. Spill the details and I won’t make things hard for a mere errand boy like you.”
Jing Qizhen meant it. He had no intention of troubling the bodyguard personally. After all, David and his friend Caroline would no doubt handle the bodyguard thoroughly.
Lu Lingxi, hearing this, smoothly adjusted his rifle. With the long barrel now affixed, the icy cold muzzle aligned perfectly with the bodyguard’s temple.
Lu Lingxi leaned closer to the bodyguard, fluttering his wide, innocent Bambi-like eyes. “Hello? We’re on a tight schedule here!”
The implication was clear: the bodyguard was just a tool for hire. He likely didn’t have access to any high-level insider information. Letting him go wouldn’t be a big deal and killing him wouldn’t be much trouble either.
There’s no denying that the sheer contrast made a smiling killer far more terrifying than a cold-blooded one.
Faced with Lu Lingxi’s innocent smile and the cold muzzle pressed against his temple, the bodyguard broke out in a cold sweat and immediately nodded frantically to show his willingness to cooperate.
Jing Qizhen removed the gag from the bodyguard’s mouth.
The bodyguard gasped for breath and quickly said, “I’ll talk!”
David, sitting in the back and watching coldly, silently took a deep breath.
Si Jiayang, who wasn’t much of a talker, typed a line of English on his phone and showed it to David, [Calm down, bro. Considering you’ve had this kind of bodyguard, it’s a miracle this is the first time something’s happened to you.]
David’s eye twitched. “…” Thanks for the comforting words!
Under Jing Qizhen’s temptation and Lu Lingxi’s intimidation, the bodyguard quickly spilled everything he knew.
It turned out he had indeed betrayed his employer, David, for money.
The bodyguard repeatedly emphasized, “The people who contacted me said they wouldn’t harm the boss. They just wanted to make a deal with him. Besides, lots of people have been after the boss lately, even trying to take his life. So, I figured—”
Jing Qizhen smiled faintly. “If it’s just business, why not set up a meeting directly? Why go through all this trouble under a hail of bullets? Do you believe that yourself?”
The bodyguard was left speechless.
Jing Qizhen didn’t press him further and instead asked directly, “Where’s the handover location?”
The bodyguard answered honestly.
Jing Qizhen ignored him and instead called out in his mind, “Babyball?”
The Earth responded enthusiastically, “I’m on it! I’m on it! I’ll track them down in no time! Trust me!”
