- Chapter 92 - Protection is charged
After capturing the attackers, the team knocked them unconscious following Tang Song’s instructions, tied them up tightly and stuffed them under the car seats. Then, without hesitation, they drove off toward a secluded, surveillance-free area in the suburbs.
Those individuals were originally ‘volunteers’ trained extensively to enter erosion areas. However, since they hadn’t managed to enter the erosion areas, they reverted to their old security roles. At least the overseas trip wasn’t a waste.
With the threat of the sniper rifle now eliminated, Jing Qizhen’s group, who had been cautiously hiding, finally stood up in the safety of David’s villa. For a moment, the group exchanged uncertain glances.
The usually quiet Yan Hong was the first to speak, a rarity for him, “That sniper was absolutely a professional.”
Lu Lingxi, equally skilled in the field, nodded in agreement.
It was a villa area, flat terrain with few obstacles aside from the houses themselves. The opposing sniper had been positioned at a high vantage point, granting him a clear line of sight and a decisive advantage. It allowed him to suppress their group effectively.
However, the sniper likely hadn’t expected that the moment he fired his first shot, the Earth’s omniscient vision had locked onto his location. The pursuing ‘volunteers’ weren’t just professionals. It was as if they had been playing hide-and-seek with X-ray vision hacks enabled.
Manman frowned slightly. “Who exactly were the attackers targeting?”
Her implication was clear. There were only two groups present: Jing Qizhen’s team posing as rescue experts and David himself.
If the attackers were targeting Tang Song, Jing Qizhen and their team, their goal was most likely the special items retrieved from the erosion areas.
Those items were immensely valuable, fetching astronomical prices on the black market. The attackers wouldn’t even need a deep understanding of erosion areas. The items themselves were motive enough.
If the attackers were after David, however, the reasoning might be different. They were perhaps deranged relatives of victims, acting in grief-fueled vengeance, or with simple malicious intent toward David as the host of the banquet.
When people were still considered missing, there might have been blame but no action. However, when others emerged safely from the erosion area while their loved ones did not, grief and rage could spiral into uncontrollable extremes, leading to irrational, dangerous behavior.
Suddenly, the Earth’s voice screamed in Jing Qizhen’s mind, “Get down!!!”
The urgency in the Earth’s tone was deafening, leaving Jing Qizhen’s ears ringing. Despite the noise in his head, his reactions were lightning-fast. He shouted, “Get down!”
Jing Qizhen’s team acted in perfect unison, following his command before he had even finished speaking.
David, the only one out of sync, had grown cautious after the earlier attack. Not even waiting for Jing Qizhen to pull him down, David ducked instinctively, diving behind a sofa for cover as alarm bells went off in his mind.
The next moment, a bullet shattered the glass of the floor-to-ceiling window with a crisp ‘pop,’ pierced a nearby marble coffee table and exploded with such force that the table splintered into fragments. Sparks flew across the floor.
Without hesitation, Lu Lingxi pushed the sofa David was hiding behind, toppling it to create additional cover against the direction of the windows.
Jing Qizhen was stunned. “A second wave of attackers?!”
The Earth screamed, “There are even more people this time—aaahhh! But they don’t have a sniper anymore! I don’t think they’re from the same group!”
The wireless communication channel remained open and the team driving out to the wilderness with the captured attackers overheard the commotion. They requested instructions from Tang Song, “Should we get a location?”
They had already apprehended three attackers, had sufficient manpower and weapons and with the Earth’s omniscient perspective providing 360-degree tracking of the attackers, they were confident they could handle the new wave of assailants.
Yan Hong immediately vetoed the idea. “No. If you turn around and drive back now, it’ll be too conspicuous in the surveillance footage along this stretch of road!”
As a former undercover cop, Yan Hong was well-versed in police investigative procedures and surveillance analysis.
The team on the other end quickly adapted. “We just found a car on the roadside! Whoa, in the dead of winter and the windows aren’t locked? Perfect, this is ours now!”
Although they didn’t have the keys, they simply popped open the console, pulled out two wires and manually hotwired the car into action.
Everyone listening: “…”
Only Tang Song remained unfazed. He turned to Jing Qizhen. “Coordinates?”
A stunned Earth stammered, “…Four—no, their ten o’clock direction.”
Jing Qizhen gave Tang Song an ‘OK’ gesture and got to work with the Earth. After their earlier practice, their teamwork had become much more seamless.
With things under control on that end, Tang Song grabbed David again but this time he didn’t ask about the fairy tale book. Instead, he spoke quickly and sharply, “The police haven’t shown up and your bodyguards haven’t arrived either. You’ve got a mole in your camp. Understand?”
David’s face darkened as he nodded. He immediately pulled out his phone and made a call. The name ‘Caroline’ lit up on the screen.
David said, “I’m trapped in the villa with the rescue team after being attacked by shooters. If I die, my inheritance goes to you.”
Tang Song: “…???” He hadn’t expected that response.
Jing Qizhen, busy giving directions, added, “Turn left at the next intersection, then go straight for three kilometers. The attackers are gathering in that direction.”
He continued serving as the voice navigator for their returning teammates, carefully planning a route that avoided their earlier path while optimizing their chances of intercepting the attackers based on the Earth’s updates.
After finishing his instructions, Jing Qizhen turned back to look at David with a visibly stunned face.
You’re still alive, bro. What are you doing?
Why the sudden crisis mode for sorting out your inheritance?
Meanwhile, Caroline, who was at a hospital getting her blood drawn, shouted in a sharp, angry voice, “I’ll avenge you!”
David took a deep breath to calm himself, his expression eerily mirroring Caroline’s earlier agitation.
David said calmly, “I actually have a pretty good chance of surviving. These rescue experts are incredibly professional!”
Caroline replied, “Then I’ll help you get revenge later!”
David: “Deal!”
Everyone else: “…” These two are something else!
Manman, crouched in a corner under Si Jiayang’s protection, maintained a calm expression despite the situation. Her voice was clear and cold, “You’ve got a mole and this attack was clearly aimed at you. Protecting you will come with a fee.”
As someone who had hired bodyguards for years, David was very accepting of the idea of paying a protection fee. “Once I’m safe, we can finalize the contract. If I die, well, this deal’s off the table.”
Everyone: “…” No wonder Manman is rich. This is just the tip of the iceberg but they were starting to get the idea!
On the other end of the call, Caroline also overheard the commotion. Her voice pierced through, sharp and urgent, “You must protect him at all costs!”
At that moment, David’s phone buzzed with a low notification tone. “It’s a call from the bodyguard. Caroline, I’ll hang up for now.”
Caroline: “Let anyone near you with a phone call me back!”
Jing Qizhen: “…” Is she expecting a live broadcast of this mess?
Curious about what the two foreigners might say next, Old Xiao generously handed David his phone to continue the call.
David, without missing a beat, answered the bodyguard while calling Caroline back on the other line.
Bodyguard: “Where are you?! I’ve subdued one of the attackers. He has accomplices. The villa isn’t safe. We need to get you out of there!”
The Earth shouted, “The bodyguard is completely alone! He’s been dodging a sniper’s line of sight! They’re not from the same group!”
The Earth rambled on but Jing Qizhen condensed it into two succinct words, “He’s lying.”
David’s already grim expression hardened further. Taking a deep breath, he responded with an agitated tone, “I’m in the villa! There’s a sniper! Bullets just came through the windows! I’m paying you people and this is what I get?!”
By the end, David’s voice was so high-pitched it almost cracked, filled with genuine frustration.
Bodyguard: “…I’ll get there as soon as I can, boss!”
David: “I’m hiding in the wine cellar under the villa. The signal here is bad. What did you say? Hello? Hello? Hello?”
With that, David forcefully ended the call.
Everyone else: “…”
So, he’s a drama king too.
David looked up, noticing everyone staring at him. He added, “I tricked him into coming here.”
After a pause, he added another point. “Your team handled the first two waves of attackers outside. The third wave, including my former bodyguard, will arrive soon. You can handle him too, right?”
Finally given a chance to act, Gu Leshan and Lu Lingxi, both previously pinned down by enemy fire, cracked their knuckles, eager to jump in. “No problem, boss!”
Apparently, considering that Manman had already negotiated an additional fee, the two had even changed how they addressed David.
Jing Qizhen held up three fingers toward David. “So far, we’ve encountered three different groups.”
They had anticipated that the situation in the foreign erosion area might be complicated, especially since items from the erosion area had appeared on the black-market darknet.
What they hadn’t expected was that not only was the erosion area itself highly deceptive but that the chaos surrounding David after their return would also be so convoluted.
David nodded, letting out a hum of acknowledgment. His mood was far from calm as he gripped his phone so tightly it looked like it might crack.
The Earth, observing carefully, suddenly exclaimed, “The bodyguard is here! He’s braving gunfire to find David! Yikes, the sniper almost hit him just now. He dodged into a blind spot in the sniper’s line of sight! Very professional!”
Jing Qizhen, in his mind: “Babyball, the exact location of the bodyguard.”
The Earth: “Oh, oh, oh, he’s circling around from the neighboring villa, the one Yun Shuanghua stayed in earlier!”
Jing Qizhen, keeping it brief, reported, “He’s here.”
Tang Song signaled for non-combat personnel like Grandma Fang, Manman, Si Jiayang and Old Xiao to take cover. David, seeing them, eagerly joined them in hiding.
Grandma Fang glanced at David and found the young foreigner rather amusing.
Meanwhile, the team members who had doubled back were now closing in on the attackers with precise intel from the Earth, planning to replicate their earlier strategy of swiftly taking out the outer attackers in one sweep.
By the time the suspicious bodyguard, just as the Earth had described, braved the gunfire and finally managed to approach David’s house, he pushed open the door, only to meet Lu Lingxi’s innocent and playful smile, reminiscent of a baby deer.
Lu Lingxi waved and greeted him with a cheerful, “Hello! Surprised? Excited?”
Standing by the door, Gu Leshan wasted no time and struck the bodyguard on the head with the butt of his gun, knocking out two teeth and splitting his head open. Within a second, the bodyguard was pinned to the ground, his weapons completely disarmed. If it weren’t for the presence of women in the room, Gu Leshan would have stripped the man entirely to ensure he wasn’t hiding anything before tying him up.
Efficiently dragging the unconscious bodyguard inside, Gu Leshan secured him, while Lu Lingxi calmly closed the door as if nothing had happened.
Just then, a faint static crackled over their earpieces, followed by an excited report from the outside team, “We caught all five of them! It’s tricky to move. What should we do next?”
Tang Song didn’t hesitate. “Take the leader and leave the rest for the local police.”
Although Caroline, who had been silently listening on Old Xiao’s phone, didn’t fully understand what was happening, she suddenly shouted anxiously, “Where are you leaving them? I’ll send someone to pick them up and take care of it myself!”
Old Xiao: “…???”
Jing Qizhen reached out, took Old Xiao’s phone and gave Caroline the location.
Caroline: “Thank you. I’ll make sure David includes the intel fee in your payment later!”
Everyone: “…”
Jing Qizhen thought to himself, ‘This young lady has really adapted to the situation since leaving the erosion area. No wonder David is willing to share his inheritance with her.’
