- Chapter 143 - The police are here, the reporters are here, expose them!
Jing Qizhen said calmly, “The police are all busy rescuing people right now. They don’t have time to worry about your rabbit holes, so don’t stress about that.”
However, according to Lu Lingxi’s calculations, the explosion site had been carefully chosen, so it shouldn’t have too great an impact on the hospital’s staircases. In comparison, Jing Qizhen actually thought that the countless tunnels the March Hare had dug might have a bigger impact on the hospital.
The March Hare: “…” I don’t believe you, but this rabbit doesn’t dare say it.
Seeing so much blood on the ground of the hospital’s first floor, people might feel both horrified and morbidly curious, but when the ground itself starts shaking violently, all that’s left is raw, instinctive terror and fear.
Up ahead, the reporters holding cameras, video recorders, and microphones were still shouting nonstop.
The police calls were also coming one after another.
All the voices were mostly drowned out by the intense shaking of the ground, accompanied by the sounds of soil collapsing and flowerbeds toppling. The entire Second Municipal Hospital of Binhai City instantly descended into complete chaos.
Only Jing Qizhen and his informed group maintained a calmness that seemed utterly out of place with the surrounding chaos.
Lu Lingxi had already walked over. Hearing the successive collapse noises from nearby, he lowered his voice and reminded Jing Qizhen, “The rabbit holes the March Hare dug are bigger than what we recorded.” As a result, the area affected by the blast was also larger than what Lu Lingxi had previously predicted.
Jing Qizhen whispered, “But from the looks of it, the shaking doesn’t seem like it’ll cause too serious a result.”
Lu Lingxi nodded.
The March Hare pricked up its ears warily, its red eyes fixed on Jing Qizhen. What are these guys saying about Sir Rabbit behind its back again?!
The underground explosions continued one after another, throwing everyone into panic.
Manman, holding an infrared binocular, carefully observed the direction of the hospital entrance for a moment before hesitating, “There seems to be a crowd gathering outside?”
Jing Qizhen: “That’s fine. The more people, the better.”
The Earth’s voice echoed in Jing Qizhen’s mind, “So lively!”
Jing Qizhen silently nodded.
The explosions had turned out even better than he’d imagined, probably thanks to all those tunnels the March Hare had dug!
When he heard there was a crowd outside, Lu Lingxi’s expression suddenly changed. “This is bad.”
Jing Qizhen immediately turned his head. “What do you mean?”
Lu Lingxi’s voice sounded a little anxious. “The farthest part of the rabbit holes that the March Hare dug might have already gone beyond the hospital grounds.”
Next to them, the March Hare muttered quietly, “If the noble Sir Rabbit wants to sneak out of the hospital, of course the holes have to go farther.”
Lu Lingxi’s face paled slightly. “If the explosion’s range extends there, it could cause the road to collapse…”
Jing Qizhen thought for a moment, his brows slightly furrowed, but he quickly calmed down and reassured Lu Lingxi, “Don’t panic! It’s not a big deal. These days, there aren’t many cars on the street; people mostly ride bicycles. At worst, they’ll just take a spill, nothing serious.”
If it were a busy street in 2020 with heavy traffic, a sudden road collapse could easily lead to a large chain-reaction accident. But when most people are either walking or riding bicycles, there’s much less danger.
Lu Lingxi considered this and finally felt a slight sense of relief.
Over by the inpatient building, the shouting matches between reporters and police were still going on. Soon, outside the hospital gates, onlookers who had been accidentally caught in the chaos began to cry out in alarm.
Someone shouted loudly, “Everyone, watch out! Don’t push!”
“Is anyone hurt? The hospital’s right here.”
“I don’t see any doctors or nurses!”
“Earthquake! Get out of the building quickly!”
After all, the ‘earthquake’ had struck at around six o’clock in the evening. At that hour, although some people had already gone to bed, many hadn’t yet fallen asleep.
When sleeping lightly and suddenly hearing the continuous commotion outside, many people in nearby houses jolted awake, unable to figure out what was happening. Instinctively, they followed the cries of “Earthquake!” coming from outside, tumbling out of bed, wrapping themselves in quilts, grabbing their clothes, calling for family, and fleeing in a hurry.
Outside the hospital, through the fog that Jing Qizhen and the others were watching, came a cacophony of clattering and banging noises. With the growing crowd, chaos broke out instantly, far livelier than inside the hospital.
Jing Qizhen and the others glanced at each other but remained where they stood, unmoving, as steady as mountains.
Wang Feizhou, however, was starting to panic. “This is all part of our plan, right? It’s not like something actually went wrong, right?”
Jing Qizhen reminded him, “There’s no way an earthquake would only shake everywhere except where we are.” The chaos outside was definitely a chain reaction of group panic triggered by the slight tremors.
Wang Feizhou: “…”
He understood the logic, but as an ordinary person, witnessing such a scene suddenly filled him with an inexplicable anxiety.
Grandma Fang, being older and experienced with such events, spoke gently, “They’ll just panic for a while. Once the shaking stops, everyone will go back home.”
Hearing this, Lu Lingxi blinked innocently, his eyes wide like a startled deer. After a moment of hesitation, he answered quietly, “I split the explosives into small charges in the rabbit holes. These continuous small explosions will probably last about ten minutes…”
Manman raised an eyebrow. “Ten minutes, huh—”
Si Jiayang thought for a moment and guessed, “Ten minutes of ‘earthquake’ is more than enough for the news to spread far and wide…”
Even in the dead of winter, for safety’s sake, residents of nearby houses would likely stay out in their yards for at least an hour before gradually returning home.
Meanwhile, inside the hospital, the chaos was not limited to the reporters and police. The survivors they were targeting were also turning pale and disoriented as the ground shook violently.
The survivors’ fear of doctors, nurses, and strangers in white coats stemmed from the persecution delusion caused by their schizophrenia. But their fear and panic at the ‘earthquake’ came from an instinctive survival response rooted in human genes, a sense of helplessness and despair when confronted with the uncontrollable power of nature.
Because the rabbit tunnels the March Hare dug were mostly concentrated beneath the hospital, the collapses and tremors were felt most strongly there. The survivors who had previously been hiding finally had no choice but to reveal themselves under the relentless explosions.
The sky was dim and several hospital streetlights had gone out due to broken wiring, casting the courtyard into an even deeper gloom.
Several survivors were frantically fleeing, stumbling across the uneven ground of the hospital yard.
“Eh? They—”
Lu Lingxi reached out, intending to stop them, but Jing Qizhen grabbed his arm. “They’re heading toward the hospital gates, perfect!” Jing Qizhen said quickly, “Come on, let’s follow them!”
The survivors’ desperate will to live carried them as far as the hospital entrance. Seeing the collapsed road outside the gate, the survivors’ faces were filled with panic. They kept muttering nervously, “We’re going to die…”
Jing Qizhen and the others quickly caught up, exchanging a quick glance under the dim streetlights.
Jing Qizhen rushed forward, grabbing a panicked survivor and speaking rapidly, “There’s an earthquake! The police are here, the reporters are here too, take this chance and expose them!”
The survivor’s pale face was twisted with fear and confusion. He stammered, hesitant and timid, “I—”
Jing Qizhen cut him off without giving him the chance to refuse, “What do you mean, ‘I’? Exposing this is the most important thing right now. You have to seize this moment because the chance won’t come again. You don’t want to spend your whole life hiding in fear, do you?”
The survivor’s panic was plain as day, his fear of the outside world leaving him completely lost. “But—”
Determined, Jing Qizhen didn’t allow him another word. He gripped the survivor’s arm firmly and said with absolute certainty, “No buts! Even if you don’t think of yourself, think of the other victims. There won’t be a better opportunity than this. You have to seize it and expose those ghosts’ cruel plans to the public!”
The survivor was trembling all over. He tried to run, but no matter how hard he struggled, he couldn’t break free from Jing Qizhen’s grip.
Similarly, Yun Shuanghua, Lu Lingxi, Wilcox, Si Jiayang, and the other strong men each restrained one survivor, holding their arms in a way that conveyed both control and support.
Even Manman and Jin Guijuan, the two young women, had joined in, holding on to the frailest-looking survivor.
The March Hare, who was trailing at the end, came over and stood by, wanting to help on account of the noble Prince’s orders.
However, as soon as the survivors saw it, they let out ear-piercing screams and thrashed even harder. The March Hare couldn’t bring itself to actually fight with patients, leaving it awkwardly stuck in indecision.
Finally, Jing Qizhen whispered to the fluffy rabbit in a little vest, “Go hide for now. Just make sure no one runs off.”
Sir Rabbit gave a casual wave of his tiny top hat. No problem! After all, rabbits run fast!
The March Hare looked around but found no holes nearby to dive into, so it darted into a crooked bush near the gate and crouched there quietly. In the dark of night, with no one paying attention, no one would notice the big rabbit hiding in the bushes!
Grandma Fang, being older, naturally couldn’t match the younger ones in strength, so she took a different approach. She raised her voice and shouted toward the dusty policemen and reporters inside the hospital, “Officers! Reporters! We have someone here who knows about the hospital accident!”
If the mountain won’t come to me, I’ll go to the mountain.
No matter what, they had to give that survivor a chance to face the truth!
Neither the police nor the reporters had yet found the person who made the initial call. In the middle of the chaotic night, Grandma Fang’s voice instantly caught their attention.
The survivor tried to run but restrained by Jing Qizhen and the others, he had no strength to resist.
Jing Qizhen kept encouraging him, “Quick! Speak up about your problem! The police are here and the reporters too. Expose them now, they won’t get away!”
