- Chapter 137 - This ball’s not going to die!
Carrying the items they’d just gathered, Jing Qizhen stepped out of the ward and shut the door behind them.
Jing Qizhen: “Let’s go. Time to get something to eat.”
No one objected.
Si Jiayang grinned. “I wonder what Yun Shuanghua brought back.”
Jing Qizhen replied, “…That might require a little imagination.”
Remembering the chaos Yun Shuanghua had caused in the hospital cafeteria before, Si Jiayang couldn’t hold back a laugh.
Jing Qizhen stayed calm. “It can’t be that bad…”
Si Jiayang just waved it off without saying more.
The group soon reached the cafeteria, which was quiet and deserted, but still faintly smelled of burnt food.
Jin Guijuan looked around, puzzled. “What happened in here earlier?”
Jing Qizhen answered concisely, “Yun Shuanghua tried to learn how to cook.”
Everyone else: “……”
Finally, Manman commented objectively, “Dreams are good to have.”
Jing Qizhen: “……”
Since Yun Shuanghua hadn’t returned with ingredients yet, even Si Jiayang’s expert cooking skills were useless without materials. So he got to work cooking rice first, cleaned up the kitchen a bit while waiting, then settled in to await Yun Shuanghua’s return.
Meanwhile, back in the old hospital building’s lobby, the March Hare was quietly waiting for its prince to return from grocery shopping.
However, just then, from the morgue on basement level one, came a sudden, terrified scream.
The March Hare was so startled that it literally jumped. Its long, furry rabbit ears shot upright with a flap as it shouted, still shaken, “Who?! Who dares play ghostly tricks, trying to frighten the noble Sir Rabbit?!”
The scream from the basement floor abruptly stopped.
Only then did the March Hare let out a small breath of relief.
Sir Rabbit had never been afraid of those ghost doctors and nurses. Although they were semi-transparent, they still had distinctly human shapes and Sir Rabbit could easily smack a few of them away with one paw.
However, if it were a terrifyingly shaped, enormous monster or a dark witch, Sir Rabbit would immediately chicken out.
After all, nothing in this world was more important than staying alive!
Still shaken, the March Hare’s red eyes didn’t blink as it stood perfectly still, ears perked and listening intently. After confirming there were no more strange noises coming from the floor below, it finally relaxed a little and muttered, “When will His Highness the Prince come back?”
Meanwhile, in the morgue on the basement level, the missing survivors looked dazed and lost. Just moments ago, someone had opened one of the cold storage drawers and caught a glimpse of the frozen corpse inside, letting out a terrified scream.
Screams were contagious, especially among people whose nerves were already frayed.
One survivor murmured in shock, “It—it was a child! They didn’t even spare children…”
Clearly, to the survivors, the properly stored bodies in the morgue were all seen as proof of murders committed by those evil doctors.
Another survivor clutched his head in despair, as if consumed by hopelessness, muttering over and over, “We’re all going to die. All of us… No one can save us.”
When the faint sound of the March Hare’s angry shouting echoed down from above, the survivors went even paler.
Someone began shaking violently, covering their mouth in panic and whispering, “That monster followed us. It’s waiting up there!”
Another’s mind began to crack under the pressure, muttering in a trance-like state, “We can’t escape… we’re going to get caught… we’re all going to die here…”
At that moment, Yun Shuanghua returned from grocery shopping. Originally intending to head straight for the cafeteria, he happened to catch sight of the March Hare standing alone in the first-floor lobby of the old hospital building and thought Jing Qizhen and the others might be nearby, so he approached. Upon entering and seeing the solitary giant rabbit, Yun Shuanghua was a bit surprised. “You’re by yourself? Where are Jing Qizhen and the others?”
The March Hare didn’t pick up on the implied meaning. It shook its furry ears and replied matter-of-factly, “Of course not, Your Highness the Prince.” It lifted a front paw and pointed toward the floor. “There were people down there just now screaming their heads off, very scary!”
Given what he knew about Jing Qizhen, Yun Shuanghua thought it was far more likely that he was the one making others scream in terror, not the other way around… After a brief silence, Yun Shuanghua asked directly, “Where are they?”
The March Hare dutifully replied, “They said they were heading to the inpatient building first, but they might be at the cafeteria by now!”
Holding two bags of vegetables and fruit, Yun Shuanghua immediately latched onto the keyword. “Alright, let’s go to the cafeteria.” He was clearly uninterested in investigating the spooky noises downstairs.
At the mention of Si Jiayang’s cooking, the March Hare perked up and bounced over to grab one of the grocery bags, cheerfully chirping, “Yes, Your Highness the Prince!”
By coincidence, because of the March Hare’s interruption, the survivors had only managed to open one drawer and see a single body before becoming too scared to open any others. They huddled together in fear inside the morgue.
By the time they finally summoned the courage to creep back upstairs, they happened to catch a glimpse of Yun Shuanghua’s back.
One survivor whispered in shock, “It—it’s a human!”
Another still trembled with fear, stammering in disbelief, “Why is he walking with a monster…?”
Someone else shook their head desperately. “He’s one of them. He’s with the monsters. We’re done for… we’re done…”
The March Hare, sensing the stares, looked back at the group of survivors and muttered, “What’s up with those guys?”
Yun Shuanghua casually asked, “You were with Jing Qizhen and the others earlier, didn’t they tell you anything?”
The March Hare obediently recounted the story of helping photograph things in the Psychiatric Department. When it finished, it suddenly realized, “Oh! So those must be the psychiatric patients they were talking about!”
Yun Shuanghua didn’t care much about it and simply remarked, “Humans really are amazing.”
The March Hare nodded solemnly. “Yes, very amazing indeed.”
Just like Si Jiayang, who would have thought someone who could cook such delicious food was also capable of such horrifying barbecue attempts?
Not long after, Yun Shuanghua and the March Hare, still carrying groceries, arrived in front of the very group of amazing humans they’d been discussing.
Si Jiayang and the others, who had been waiting in the cafeteria, quickly came out to greet them.
Si Jiayang headed back to the kitchen to cook, with Old Xiao and Jin Guijuan helping out.
Yun Shuanghua seemed itching to try his hand at cooking again, but after seeing Jing Qizhen sitting calmly nearby, he tamped down the impulse and instead reported what he had just witnessed.
Jing Qizhen’s expression turned thoughtful. Putting together the March Hare’s words and Yun Shuanghua’s account, it wasn’t hard to deduce. “So those survivors really are in the morgue.”
He wondered silently if they had seen all of the corpses. Thinking of the partial medical chart mixed in with the one for the traffic accident victim, Jing Qizhen still believed the schizophrenic patient might be connected to it all…
Si Jiayang cooked quickly as always. With help from the others, and with Yun Shuanghua watching attentively rather than interfering, the meal was soon ready. The group brought the dishes to the large table in the hospital cafeteria and sat down in a circle.
Just as Jing Qizhen was about to start eating, he suddenly heard a slurping sound in his mind. Jing Qizhen’s hand paused. “Babyball, you’re back?”
At that exact moment, Yun Shuanghua, who had been silently eating at the table, seemed to glance at Jing Qizhen almost subconsciously.
However, Jing Qizhen’s attention was entirely on the Earth, who had just returned, and he didn’t notice Yun Shuanghua’s small motion.
The Earth said, “I just searched the hospitals outside for so long! Sluuurp!”
Jing Qizhen: “…” Baby, you’ve been slurping so much you can’t even talk properly.
Helplessly rubbing his forehead, Jing Qizhen finally asked, “How did it go?”
The Earth replied proudly, its tone even lifting a little, “I went to the psychiatric hospital in Binhai City and happened to find a patient who had been transferred there from Binhai City’s Second Municipal Hospital.”
Jing Qizhen perked up. “You found that patient?”
The Earth hesitated. “I think so but he doesn’t look quite the same. The survivors in the erosion area all appear very young, but the patient I found has white hair and is dozing off in the ward after taking his meds.”
Jing Qizhen: “…”
Two or three decades is a very long time for anyone, let alone someone with schizophrenia. It was only natural that the man’s hair would turn white over such a long stretch of time.
Still, the Earth’s report basically confirmed many of Jing Qizhen’s earlier suspicions. Jing Qizhen immediately put down his chopsticks and took out the thin diary he had collected earlier.
Seeing this, Wang Feizhou looked confused, but the others immediately understood that the Babyball had returned.
In his mind, Jing Qizhen said, “Babyball, take a look. Can you make out the writing in this?”
The Earth didn’t even glance at it before replying instinctively, “Of course I can!”
Jing Qizhen: “…Then help me read it.”
After boasting, the Earth fell into an awkward silence.
Jing Qizhen: “Babyball?”
The Earth: “…”
Finally, after a long moment, the Earth muttered, “These aren’t even words!”
Jing Qizhen, sincerely asking for guidance: “Then what are they?”
The Earth huffed, “Haven’t you seen how some people just scribble? You humans do this kind of thing all the time!”
Jing Qizhen silently flipped to the next page of the thin diary. “How about this page?”
The Earth peered at it. “Ooh? There are two lines of writing here. ‘It’s all my fault. He’s going to die. I’m going to die. We’re all going to die…’”
Jing Qizhen: “…” That one sentence alone was enough to confirm this diary belonged to the schizophrenic patient.
However, that line, ‘It’s all my fault’ seemed to hint at a deeper story…
The Earth was still muttering to itself, “Ew, this ball’s not going to die with them!”
