- Chapter 133 - The amazing uses of the March Hare
Wang Feizhou was so startled he instinctively took a step back.
The others, however, remained in place.
Jing Qizhen looked up subconsciously, observing Yun Shuanghua’s reaction.
Yun Shuanghua was also staring at the spot where the March Hare had vanished. Only when he noticed Jing Qizhen’s gaze did he turn his eyes.
Yun Shuanghua: “What is it?”
Once Jing Qizhen confirmed Yun Shuanghua could also see the door, he didn’t say anything directly. Instead, he just gave a small shake of his head and suddenly asked, “What do you want to eat for lunch?”
Everyone, still in a state of confusion and tension, was momentarily stunned by the sudden change in topic.
Yun Shuanghua’s eyes lit up, although he hesitated, remembering Si Jiayang’s earlier complaints. “Isn’t there not much food in the cafeteria?”
Jing Qizhen started rummaging through his backpack. Before long, he pulled out a thick envelope.
Then, he handed the envelope to Yun Shuanghua. “You should be able to leave the hospital, right? It’s daytime now, so there must be street vendors or small shops at the hospital entrance. Get some vegetables and fruits too.”
Yun Shuanghua took the envelope and opened it, only to find some obviously worn and aged blue-black banknotes, very different from the pink Chairman Mao bills he had seen at the Yunhai Wancheng Department Store last time.
Old Xiao was stunned. “You brought that old version of RMB in here?”
Jing Qizhen: “Yeah. I learned my lesson after that time in the remote mountain village of Shennongjia.”
They only managed to live comfortably in that village thanks to Yan Hong’s gold chain. While gold was generally a universal currency, modern society still works more smoothly with actual banknotes.
Old Xiao muttered, “Amazing you even managed to find some…”
Tang Song’s people were seriously miracle-workers.
Jing Qizhen casually added, “This version of RMB didn’t officially stop circulating until 2018. It’s not that hard to find.”
Just like those health bureau staff who never moved offices for decades, they could still dig up terrifyingly thin blank red-headed government forms from ancient piles of scrap paper…
After that, Jing Qizhen turned to Si Jiayang. “Do you need any ingredients?”
Si Jiayang’s eyes glinted. He’d noticed Jing Qizhen’s strange behavior just now and quickly caught on. He immediately played along, giving instructions to Yun Shuanghua, “Just pick what looks good! Whatever fruits or vegetables you think look nice, buy them. I can cook pretty much anything, so variety is good.”
Yun Shuanghua nodded happily. “Okay!”
This had also been proven back in the remote village of Shennongjia. Every erosion area seemed to be a complete world of its own.
The volunteers like Jing Qizhen, who came from the real world, had limited movement. If they strayed too far past the boundary, they would risk being shredded by space rifts. But native beings of the erosion area didn’t seem to be affected by this at all.
Jing Qizhen theorized that the outsiders were only able to enter because they resonated with the core of the erosion area.
But in truth, the radiation range of that core was limited.
Once they went beyond that range, they’d lose resonance with the erosion core and be repelled from the area. And since the Earth and those other parallel worlds overlapped and tangled in space, that led to countless spatial rifts, deadly and everywhere.
Once Yun Shuanghua left, envelope in hand, and was far enough away, Si Jiayang raised an eyebrow at Jing Qizhen and was just about to say, ‘Bro, I played along great, right?’
However, before he could speak, Manman had already slipped her arm through his and, in a gesture both affectionate and reliant, pinched his waist.
Si Jiayang immediately tensed his posture and sucked in a sharp breath silently. When he looked down and met Manman’s calm gaze, he instantly sobered up too. He chose to stay quiet and didn’t ask what Jing Qizhen was really trying to do by sending Yun Shuanghua away on purpose.
Jing Qizhen turned and smiled at the two of them. On the surface, it looked like he was just teasing a pair of lovebirds.
Si Jiayang: “…”
Wang Feizhou stammered, “That rabbit—the big rabbit—it disappeared.”
Jing Qizhen replied, “Not necessarily disappeared. Maybe we just can’t see it.” After saying that, Jing Qizhen called out to what looked like an entirely ordinary wall, “March Hare!”
The March Hare’s familiar voice responded from some indiscernible direction, distant and close at the same time, faint and airy, making it impossible to tell exactly where it was coming from.
The March Hare didn’t sound particularly friendly and shot back, “Why are you calling the noble Sir Rabbit?” Its tone had grown more self-righteous.
Jing Qizhen turned to his companions and openly complained without lowering his voice at all, “Ugh… the moment Yun Shuanghua’s gone, this big rabbit’s whole attitude changes. How real is that?”
The March Hare immediately cried out, “The noble Sir Rabbit heard you talking behind its back!” The voice remained vague and lofty, full of condescension.
Jing Qizhen was completely unfazed and answered the disembodied voice, “Didn’t exactly try to hide it from you, did I?” He was always the kind to confront people directly.
The March Hare: “…”
Suddenly, it felt unjustly wronged again.
Si Jiayang blinked and offered helpfully, “If Yun Shuanghua brings back some fresh pork, I’ll fry up some pork chops for lunch. It’s faster than barbecuing and just as tasty.”
At the mention of barbecue, the March Hare visibly shuddered. The trauma of being doused in BBQ seasoning lingered in its rabbit brain, and one of its long ears drooped in distress.
Seeing that the March Hare had gone silent, Jing Qizhen chuckled and then asked, “I’m just teasing. I wanted to ask, what do you want to eat for lunch? Come out first, though. We can’t get into this department and it’s hard to talk like this.”
The March Hare’s big red eyes were filled with suspicion, but remembering how Jing Qizhen and Si Jiayang had also asked Yun Shuanghua about lunch earlier and knowing that his beloved prince would return soon, he figured it was safe.
Just like it had disappeared before, the March Hare suddenly reappeared in front of them, one ear still drooping, and nervously whispered to Jing Qizhen, “We agreed. No barbecue.”
Jing Qizhen: “Mm. No barbecue.”
He still didn’t quite know what Jing Qizhen was up to, but Si Jiayang had no problem playing along. He pulled out his phone, flipped through his photo album filled with food pictures, and said, “Come on, March Hare, take a look. What do you want to eat? If Yun Shuanghua brings the groceries, we can get started right away!”
The
The March Hare immediately came over curiously, eyes lighting up at the brightly colored, delicately carved carrot flowers. Its ruby-like eyes gleamed. “I want that! And that, and that!”
While the March Hare was fully distracted by Si Jiayang’s food pictures, Jing Qizhen casually teased, “Your prince came all this way and didn’t even feed you?”
The March Hare couldn’t tear its eyes away from the phone. Its three-lobed mouth mumbled, “It wasn’t far. I just took a nap and when I woke up, I was in this bare old hospital.”
Jing Qizhen raised an eyebrow slightly but didn’t ask further.
Manman and Si Jiayang exchanged a knowing glance. So that’s what Little Jing was waiting for!
Compared to Yun Shuanghua, the big rabbit really was more straightforward and gullible…
Jing Qizhen waved at Lu Lingxi. “Polaroid.”
Lu Lingxi quickly pulled it out. “What do you need this for now?”
Jing Qizhen gestured to Si Jiayang. “Connect it to your phone? Print those food pics just now. We’ve known the March Hare for a while, and it even helped call the police this time, so let’s give it a little gift.”
Hearing that, a light bulb went off in Lu Lingxi’s head and he instantly got what Jing Qizhen was planning.
With food photos in hand, and knowing how curious both the March Hare and Yun Shuanghua were about food, the two might just head out together looking for it. And if they met again later, they could roughly deduce where they’d been in the erosion area by what food they’d found…
The March Hare had no idea how much scheming was happening around it. For a moment, it was even touched. It sniffled and said, still trying to act aloof, “The noble Sir Rabbit shall remember the lovely gift from you, adorable humans!”
Nobody acknowledged the rabbit’s dramatics. Si Jiayang picked out the photos, printed them, and Jing Qizhen promptly stuffed them into the March Hare’s fluffy paw.
Despite its usual arrogance, the March Hare was genuinely moved. This time, it had successfully received a gift from the humans, a far cry from its earlier humiliations.
Jin Guijuan curiously asked, “So what did you see inside that department just now?”
The March Hare: “Pretty much the same as the other rooms!”
After handing over the photos, Jing Qizhen passed the Polaroid camera to the March Hare as well. “Here, take this too. Can you snap a pic of the Psychiatry Department’s sign and layout for us?”
The March Hare lifted its chin, ruby eyes full of pride. “The noble Sir Rabbit shall graciously agree to your request!” After quickly learning how to use the Polaroid, the March Hare took a shot of the department sign and handed the small photo to Jing Qizhen.
Jing Qizhen: “Thanks.”
The March Hare flicked its long, furry ears and then vanished again in front of the group with its new equipment.
Lu Lingxi murmured, “…Even after seeing it once, it still feels magical.”
Jing Qizhen shook the photo in his hand and everyone instantly crowded around. Manman even took another picture of it with her phone.
The Psychiatry Department, which had been completely invisible to them, now clearly appeared in the photo the March Hare had taken.
Jing Qizhen lowered his eyes slightly. “Once the March Hare comes back, we’ll go look for those survivors.”
