- Chapter 126 - Police (human), Doctors and Nurses (ghost), and Survivors (human)
As soon as Jin Guijuan said this, Jing Qizhen immediately ignored the survivors from the next room who had come over to urge them to escape together. He simply closed the door, decisively locking the survivors outside. Ignoring the persistent knocking, he turned around and asked Jin Guijuan, “What do you mean?”
When Jing Qizhen and Si Jiayang were observing the four policemen earlier, they both felt a sense of incongruity.
However, considering that the scene of policemen standing together with ghosts was already absurd and bizarre, they couldn’t pinpoint what exactly was wrong with the situation at that time.
Jin Guijuan didn’t hesitate and quickly explained, “It’s the policemen’s uniforms!”
Jing Qizhen and Si Jiayang spoke in unison, “Uniforms?”
The others were slightly stunned, but Grandma Fang and Old Xiao, who were older, were the first to react. “The police uniforms those four officers were wearing are the style from recent years!”
Jin Guijuan: “Yes, the light blue shirts and gray jackets are just like the police uniforms we see nowadays. But back in the 1990s, police uniforms were dark green.”
Grandma Fang nodded. “Back then, you guys were still young, probably not even born yet… Eh? Guijuan shouldn’t have seen that era’s police uniforms either, right?”
Jin Guijuan smiled and shook her head, “No, I haven’t… But when I was a kid and went to the police station, it was in a remote and poor area. Although they had mostly switched to the light blue and gray uniforms, some people would occasionally wear the old ones. I stayed at the station for a few days and a policeman who chatted with me mentioned it during a casual conversation, so I remember it clearly.”
She had briefly mentioned her childhood experiences before.
Jing Qizhen and the others had also heard Tang Song talk about how Jin Guijuan, while running away from home, had inadvertently helped rescue several trafficked women and, later on the run, assisted the police in dismantling a pyramid scheme hideout.
To be honest, among all of them, Jin Guijuan was the youngest, but she had entered society earlier than anyone else. Despite her troubled family background, she was stubborn and resilient, making her social experiences far richer than average.
Wang Feizhou, feeling a bit confused, summarized, “So, those policemen… were wearing the wrong uniforms?”
Jing Qizhen clarified, “It’s not just about wearing the wrong uniforms. Those four policemen, wearing the 2020-style uniforms from the real world, appeared in the 1990s Binhai City’s Second Municipal Hospital and had a five-hour-long, nonsensical conversation with the ghost medical staff.”
Manman succinctly added, “Time, space, people, and dialogue are all mismatched.”
Even the Earth was left puzzled, “And then?”
Jin Guijuan thought for a moment, hesitating. “This erosion area seems… unusual?”
Jing Qizhen furrowed his brows slightly and shook his head. “It’s very unusual.”
In previous erosion areas, they encountered ghost beings like Miss Li, the lady ghost, Xu Erya, and Xu Siya, as well as surreal places like the Fairy Tale Kingdom formed by a storybook. Currently, the March Hare was still trying to go upstairs, busily looking for its missing prince.
However, each erosion area, no matter how bizarre, had its own consistent setting and fixed rules.
Yunhai Wancheng Department Store’s erosion area took place many years later, so many items in the supermarket had deteriorated.
The remote village in Shennongjia showed older layouts and villagers’ ancestors.
In the Massachusetts villa’s erosion area, the villa itself remained unchanged even when merged with the Fairy Tale Kingdom. Even after it mutated into a complete Fairy Tale Kingdom, elements like the Knight of Heart still smelled of ink as if freshly printed.
But the erosion area of Binhai City’s Second Municipal Hospital was different.
Before the ghost medical staff appeared, Jing Qizhen thought the erosion area was similar to the remote village in Shennongjia, returning to a past scene where the hospital’s erosion core might be related to an old incident.
However, when the ghost doctors and nurses appeared and displayed abnormal characteristics, reversing the roles of humans and ghosts, Jing Qizhen had to rethink his earlier assumptions about the hospital’s erosion area.
Jing Qizhen: “I previously considered the possibility of life-death inversion due to the morgue or the presence of mirror images.”
Manman, thoughtfully, replied, “But neither the morgue’s death field nor the mirror image can explain the survivors in the inpatient building or the concept of ‘infected’ mentioned by the ghost staff.”
Jing Qizhen nodded. “Yes, I couldn’t determine the survivors’ roles in this story before. Honestly, they seem quite strange…”
Despite appearing to be good people, prolonged stress had made the survivors act somewhat erratically. But with the March Hare accidentally attracting the police and Jing Qizhen and Si Jiayang confirming the police officers’ human nature, the situation took another turn.
Jing Qizhen: “Those policemen are human and neither the police nor the ghost medical staff seem aware of this difference.”
Lu Lingxi rubbed his chin. “But earlier, that nurse looked at us as if she’d seen a ghost.”
Jing Qizhen: “Which makes me suspect that the distinction between humans and ghosts isn’t based on physical form but rather some other factor.”
Old Xiao pointed at the door and whispered, “What about those survivors outside?”
Jing Qizhen thought for a moment. “Survivors and medical staff are opposites; survivors and police are both human and friendly; doctors and police are also friendly.”
As he contemplated, an idea suddenly flashed in his mind. He borrowed a notebook from Lu Lingxi and wrote down ‘Police (human),’ ‘Doctors and Nurses (ghost),’ and ‘Survivors (human)’ in a triangular pattern.
Wilcox peeked at Jing Qizhen’s notes. “Survivors oppose medical staff; survivors and police are friendly humans; doctors and police are friendly. Should we add ourselves?”
Jing Qizhen nodded, adding another line at the bottom. “Outsiders (human), friendly with survivors, considered the same type.”
Lu Lingxi: “The ghosts fear us, but contrary to what the survivors say, they haven’t explicitly shown intent to harm us.”
Jing Qizhen: “Those ghosts also haven’t done anything to the survivors. Otherwise, the survivors wouldn’t be roaming the inpatient building unharmed.”
Wang Feizhou: “There are only a few people in the entire inpatient building. This situation itself isn’t right! How can a municipal tertiary hospital have so many available beds…”
Jin Guijuan nodded in agreement. “Yes, those ghost doctors and nurses look a bit scary, but so far, they’ve seemed pretty gentle and harmless…” They were nothing like her former boss, the lady ghost Miss Li.
Just as they were speaking, the survivors who had just been locked out by Jing Qizhen to prevent them from disturbing the discussion suddenly let out a series of terrified screams.
“The daytime monster is coming up!”
“Help! Someone save me…”
“We’re all going to die… Everyone is going to die!”
Following that, someone desperately banged twice on the door of Jing Qizhen’s ward, then fled in a panic, leaving behind one last terrified shout, so loud it broke their voice, “It’s coming!! Run!!”
Jing Qizhen and the others in the ward: “…”
The March Hare, who had just come up from the first floor covered in splattered bloodstains: “=口=???”
It just wanted to come up and inquire about the situation!
The survivors continued screaming in terror as they fled and when the March Hare, who had just reached the second floor, heard the commotion, it was startled.
The March Hare had no idea that the ‘daytime monster’ they were talking about was itself. It looked around in confusion. “Monster? What monster? Sir Rabbit doesn’t see any monster! Could it be an invisible monster!?”
Anxious, the March Hare instinctively took out its golden pocket watch, glanced at the time, and muttered to itself, “Sir Rabbit just wanted to ask for directions. What’s up with those strange humans?”
Yun Shuanghua pointed towards the door, his tone hesitant. “Uh… how do we deal with that rabbit?”
The clues were piling up, but they were all tangled together.
Jing Qizhen frowned and tried to reorganize his thoughts.
Last night, Jing Qizhen had thought that the ghost doctors and nurses ignored the survivors because they were afraid of ‘infection.’ But now it seemed that the inpatient building was more like a place separate from the Second Municipal Hospital of Binhai City…
As for the March Hare, who had shown up on its own, it at least proved one thing: although it came from another erosion area, even in the foreign hospital erosion area, the March Hare could still make an emergency call!
Realizing that the rabbit could be useful, Jing Qizhen decisively opened the ward door and called out, “Your prince isn’t lost. You come in too!”
The March Hare’s red eyes widened, its long ears standing up instantly.
Surprise!
The March Hare exclaimed cheerfully, “Your Highness, your loyal Sir Rabbit has found you!”
Yun Shuanghua: “…”
