As for the content of the emergency call made by the emergency center, the doctor who ran faster than a rabbit quickly gave a detailed explanation.
“At that time, it was that big talking rabbit who made the emergency call,” the ghost doctor, supported by a colleague, carefully described the scene, which basically matched the emergency center’s account.
The four police officers looked at each other and quickly accepted the misunderstanding caused by the emergency call from the big rabbit. There were so many people coming and going in the hospital that, unless it was a collective hallucination, the testimonies of the doctors and nurses were still quite credible.
One policeman asked seriously, “Could that big rabbit be a mascot costume? You know, the kind that some department stores use to boost the atmosphere at the entrance.”
The two ghost doctors and nurses who had interacted with the March Hare looked at each other, hesitating for a moment. “That rabbit looked very real. Its eyes and face seemed real too, and its eyes could even move!”
Jing Qizhen and Si Jiayang, who were listening on the sidelines: “…”
Another policeman spoke up, even smiling gently, “Are you sure? According to your description, the height of that big rabbit could easily be someone in a large mascot costume.”
Back and forth, the ghost doctor and nurse seemed to become uncertain about their own memories.
In the end, it was the ghost hospital director, who had been accompanying the police, who couldn’t help but frown and say, “Even if it was an ordinary person in a costume, it’s still odd, isn’t it? Who would come to a hospital dressed like that, with their face completely covered? Doctors wouldn’t be able to examine or treat them.”
Jing Qizhen quickly spoke up, deliberately lowering his voice to cover for the March Hare, “Maybe it’s a parent trying to cheer up a sick child from throwing a tantrum? You know, wearing a bunny costume to make the kid feel better.”
It seemed like someone noticed Jing Qizhen speaking, but he remained calm, and with Si Jiayang covering for him, the two quietly moved to a different corner.
Once the topic shifted to parents and children, suddenly, the bizarre situation seemed more reasonable. After all, it’s not strange at all if a parent pulls such a stunt to cheer up their child…
The ghost doctor and nurse who had previously encountered the March Hare looked confused, as if they were starting to doubt their own memories.
Could it be that they were just so startled before that their minds became unclear?
The police officers smiled, comforted the two ghost doctors and nurses, and were about to leave when the ghost nurse suddenly shouted, “Wait!”
The four officers stopped and looked at the ghost nurse in confusion.
The nurse who had fainted from fright earlier said, “It’s not just that! I clearly remember that the big rabbit was holding a missing person flyer. The person in the picture was… Right, it was that famous expert who treats the infected! But the flyer the rabbit was holding used a photo of the expert after being infected. That photo is what scared me!”
The police seemed puzzled, repeating, “Infected? Famous expert? Is that someone well-known in the medical field?”
All the ghosts stared at the police, seemingly confused as to why they didn’t know about the infected and the expert. All the ghosts in the hallway had the same blank stare, fixed on the four police officers, and even the director turned his head with the same expression.
Jing Qizhen thought to himself, ‘This scene is really creepy.’
Meanwhile, the Earth in Jing Qizhen’s mind, watching through his eyes, muttered, “This is terrifying!”
Si Jiayang and Jing Qizhen mimicked the other ghosts, staring at the police, but inside, they felt uneasy. It felt like some kind of cult gathering, definitely worth the trip.
However, the police seemed completely unaware of the eerie stares, just as they didn’t seem to notice the difference between the ghost hospital staff and their own human forms.
The ghost nurse who had fainted earlier stared at the officers in disbelief and murmured, “They’re infected! How terrifying! How could the police not know about the infected?”
One of the officers, possibly unsettled by the ghost nurse’s emotional reaction, turned to his colleague and asked, “Has there been any outbreak of infectious diseases recently?”
Feeling a bit lost, the other officer hesitated and mentioned, “Seasonal flu? It is flu season after all…”
However, seeing the blank, disbelieving stares from the ghosts around them, the officers grew silent, unsure of what to say.
The scene fell into an awkward silence.
The ghosts continued to stare straight at the officers, looking shocked and confused, as if they had suddenly lost their minds.
The four human officers, surrounded by a crowd of ghost medical staff, stood in the hallway feeling uneasy; not out of fear, but from the awkward realization that they might have missed some major news.
Si Jiayang whispered, “What the heck is going on…?”
Jing Qizhen: “…”
He hadn’t expected to encounter such an inexplicable situation and now the scene was stuck; no one was making a move.
The police and ghosts remained in a stalemate, while Jing Qizhen and Si Jiayang exchanged glances. After discreetly placing a pinhole camera in a hidden crevice, they quietly retreated while the others remained distracted.
Too focused on the police, none of the ghosts noticed Jing Qizhen and Si Jiayang slipping away.
The police did see two doctors in surgical gowns leave, but since it was normal for hospital staff to move around, they didn’t think much of it.
Once they were out of the old hospital building, Si Jiayang finally took a deep breath and quietly complained, “If this were a horror puzzle game, I would think that scene just now was a bug.”
The Earth asked in Jing Qizhen’s mind, “If it were a game, how would you fix that bug?”
Jing Qizhen replied, “Save, exit, and re-enter the game. If it still glitches, reload from an earlier save to avoid that part.”
The Earth continued, “And if that doesn’t work?”
Jing Qizhen: “Uninstall the game and feel better. Trash games aren’t worth it.”
The Earth: “…But you promised to help me fix the erosion area.”
Jing Qizhen: “Even if I wanted to run away, I can’t, right, Babyball?”
Then, turning to Si Jiayang, he suggested, “Let’s go back and rest. We can check again tomorrow. We’ve set up the surveillance camera, so we can monitor it from the ward.”
Si Jiayang nodded. “Good idea. Oh, and let’s grab a pot from the cafeteria. Who knows how the hospital will change tomorrow? We can just cook noodles in the ward.”
Jing Qizhen asked curiously, “Does the cafeteria have dried noodles?” His attention had been on Yun Shuanghua earlier, so he hadn’t noticed.
Si Jiayang nodded. “Yes, I saw them earlier.”
Jing Qizhen said, “Let’s go and we can also bring the food we just made.”
Lu Lingxi and Manman had been listening to Jing Qizhen and Si Jiayang’s conversation.
Manman quickly spoke up, “I found the camera you set up. This footage looks so strange…”
Jing Qizhen asked, “Are they still being punished to stand there?”
Manman replied, “The ghost doctors and nurses keep emphasizing how scary the infected are, but those four policemen just can’t understand it. The conversation is basically stuck in a loop, like an NPC dialogue bug, repeating the same line over and over.”
Jing Qizhen said, “I feel like something about that scene was off…”
Si Jiayang nodded in agreement, “It did feel a bit strange, but I can’t quite put my finger on it.”
Jing Qizhen said, “Let’s watch it again later when everyone else wakes up. Spotting the differences is easier when more people are involved. Otherwise, one person can easily fall into a mental or visual blind spot.”
Lu Lingxi said, “You’re relatively safe over there. The ghost doctors and nurses have mostly gathered around the policemen. They keep going back and forth on the topic of the infected, but the policemen just can’t grasp the concept, while the ghosts are getting increasingly frustrated. It’s like watching chickens and ducks trying to communicate.”
While talking, Jing Qizhen and Si Jiayang had already reached the cafeteria door.
However, in the short time they had been gone, the cafeteria had become smoky again. It looked like the cafeteria was on fire and the dim light bulb was flickering.
Jing Qizhen and Si Jiayang: “…”
Jing Qizhen murmured, “I have a bad feeling about this.”
Si Jiayang said, “I smell burnt food.”
In the bizarre and dangerous erosion area, smelling something burnt didn’t necessarily mean a massive fire; rather, it was more likely a kitchen mishap with burnt food.
Jing Qizhen remarked, “Honestly, the smoky, charred smell almost feels comforting in this context, like it’s not even that scary.”
Si Jiayang replied, “I’d give that excuse a perfect score.”
Jing Qizhen pushed the cafeteria door open, trying to let some fresh air in.
Even with masks on, both of them started coughing as they stepped inside, their throats irritated by the smoke.
Meanwhile, Yun Shuanghua, standing by the smoky stove, seemed completely unaffected. Hearing footsteps and coughing behind him, Yun Shuanghua turned around and smiled through the smoke, “You’re back?”
Jing Qizhen, struggling to speak through the coughing, waved at him, realizing that not only was this guy’s stomach resilient, but apparently his entire respiratory system was too…
Even the Earth, unaffected by the smoke, looked around and said to Jing Qizhen, “The March Hare is gone.”
Jing Qizhen replied, “Maybe it went digging somewhere.”
Si Jiayang approached the stove and looked at the half-burnt, half-undercooked stir-fried potato shreds. His face filled with indescribable disappointment.
Yun Shuanghua apologized, his tone full of guilt, looking rather innocent, “I wanted to try cooking…”
Si Jiayang hesitated for a moment before suggesting, “Do you have a phone? I’ll send you some recipes. You can start with cold dishes.” Whether they taste good or not doesn’t matter. They’re safe and won’t risk blowing up the kitchen.
Yun Shuanghua looked a bit startled, hesitating.
Jing Qizhen answered for him, “His phone got lost at the Yunhai Wancheng Department Store last time. It hasn’t been found yet, right?”
Yun Shuanghua nodded. “Yeah.”
Jing Qizhen glanced at him thoughtfully but couldn’t hold back and started coughing again, his eyes watering. “Let’s go outside and talk! Is the stove turned off?”
The cafeteria was a nightmare.
Si Jiayang, carrying the one surviving pot, also grabbed a bag of potatoes and tomatoes, handing half to Jing Qizhen. “Yeah, it’s off! It’s off!”
Yun Shuanghua, feeling a bit overwhelmed, looked a bit lost: “0.0”
It seemed he had left a rather poor impression this time…
