- Chapter 118 - Completely opposing statement
As a foreigner, Wilcox figured there was no way he’d understand the mysterious Eastern practices anytime soon, so he reluctantly shelved the topic and asked, “What do we do now?”
Jing Qizhen’s face briefly showed a somewhat subtle expression before he calmly said, “Let’s have a friendly exchange!”
The people hiding in the hospital room could clearly hear the sounds in the corridor outside.
Even as Jing Qizhen and the others continued speaking casually, the people inside reacted in different ways.
“What are they doing?” One person was crouching by the door and Jing Qizhen even heard the sound of the door slightly shaking as the person pressed against it.
“They’re trying to trick us out, those cunning ghosts…” The voice was filled with unmasked hatred and fear.
Another person, who seemed to be on the verge of a mental breakdown and starting to despair, was still obsessing over how Jing Qizhen and the others had gotten out. They trembled, saying, “Those ghosts have evolved. They’re able to come up from the first floor…”
Jing Qizhen didn’t immediately respond but listened seriously to the concerns of the people inside.
The Earth asked curiously, “Little Jing, what are you thinking?”
Even the Earth realized that the people hiding in the hospital room, likely trapped there for a long time, had become mentally strained. They were clearly afraid of ghosts, and aside from hiding and using chicken blood to ward them off, they had no other solutions.
Jing Qizhen said, “I’m wondering, if ghosts can float, why didn’t they just float up from the second-floor window to find them, instead of walking up the bloody first-floor stairs?”
The Earth thought for a moment and then replied seriously, “Maybe this is your human bias!”
Jing Qizhen: “…” That was some really reasonable nonsense.
After mumbling to the Earth for a bit, Jing Qizhen walked up and knocked on the door, “Hey, friends inside—”
The response was a series of terrified screams. “Aahhhhhhhhh—”
Jing Qizhen and his companions were startled by the sudden outburst.
Everyone: “…”
Wang Feizhou was shaken up by the unexpected screams, unable to stop himself from saying, “What’s with such a big reaction?”
Old Xiao wiped the cold sweat from his forehead and objectively commented, “If you thought there were ghosts knocking at your door, your reaction would probably be even bigger.”
Wang Feizhou: “…” That scenario, fair enough, he accepted it.
Just as Jing Qizhen was standing by the door, he suddenly jumped back and took two steps away.
The others were startled to see a puddle of blood pouring out from under the door, the strong stench of blood accompanying it.
The Earth pondered, “This scene seems familiar.”
Jing Qizhen: “…I spilled some rock candy pear drink, but yes, it’s just as difficult to clean.”
Grandma Fang crouched by the side of the hospital room door and observed carefully. Noticing that the blood had a dark color, she deduced from the earlier conversation that it was likely chicken blood. She then took out a sealed box to collect a new sample.
Although she wasn’t trained in collecting blood samples from the floor, Wang Feizhou, who was much more skilled at this, immediately stepped up to assist.
After spilling the chicken blood, someone inside the hospital room, with a sobbing tone, asked, “Did the ghosts leave?”
Another person, unsure, replied, “Let’s wait and see.”
Jing Qizhen proactively answered, “No, um, I want to tell you—”
“Ahhhhhh!” Another round of screams interrupted Jing Qizhen’s words.
Trying to communicate with the people inside but being interrupted multiple times, Jing Qizhen couldn’t help but feel a bit helpless.
Even though he could completely understand how they felt, after all, anyone who encountered ghosts would likely react by either fighting them or running for their life, not stopping to talk.
Taking a deep breath, Jing Qizhen decided to go up to the door and knocked even louder than the terrified screams inside.
Bang, bang, bang!
Indeed, in the battle of noise, the screams inside abruptly stopped.
Jing Qizhen then calmly said, “We are normal humans who just escaped from the hospital, with bodies and warmth. We are not the ghosts from inside the hospital.”
The others: “…” Here comes Jing Qizhen’s usual nonsense to bluff the ghosts.
After pausing the screams inside, there was no further response.
Jing Qizhen proactively removed his goggles and mask and unwrapped his surgical gown, revealing his human face and hands.
However, there was no peephole in the hospital room door, so even though he was willing to show them, they couldn’t see.
Thinking for a moment, Jing Qizhen turned to Lu Lingxi, “Polaroid?”
Lu Lingxi immediately understood, “You want me to take a picture?”
Jing Qizhen nodded, “Yeah, I’ll shove the photo inside, at least that’ll prove we’re human!”
It wasn’t until that moment that the people inside finally realized something. “It seems like they can hear us outside.”
Before they could scream again in terror, Jing Qizhen threatened, “If you scream again and attract more ghosts, I’ll just kick down the door and we’ll all go down together!”
The people inside quickly shook their heads, “No, no, no… Are you… really human?”
By that time, Lu Lingxi had already quickly taken a picture with the Polaroid camera, focusing on the bloodstained area by the door.
As the small photo emerged from the camera, Lu Lingxi stepped forward and slipped it through the door crack, “Here, take a look for yourselves!”
Someone inside reached out to grab it.
Moments later, the tightly shut door was quietly opened a crack.
Jing Qizhen and the others stood on one side of the door, while the one facing the door was fully armed Lu Lingxi, holding a gun with the barrel still aimed at the door.
To be honest, opening a dangerous door and seeing either a bunch of ghosts or a gun barrel might equally frighten anyone, including Jing Qizhen.
However, it seemed that, for the people inside who were already mentally on the edge due to their fear of ghosts, the human gun didn’t bring much psychological harm. On the contrary, they seemed to sense the alertness and unease from Jing Qizhen and the others and felt a sense of camaraderie from their own kind.
“It’s a living person, really a living person!” a large man inside, facing the gun barrel, exclaimed in joy.
Clearly, to them, a human wielding a weapon was far more trustworthy than actual ghosts.
Lu Lingxi, who hadn’t expected that situation, was left speechless.
Soon, the hospital room door swung wide open. The people who had been huddling inside quickly scanned the surgical gowns that Jing Qizhen and the others were wearing, and they immediately understood. They looked at them sympathetically and said, “You escaped from that hospital too? You’re still wearing those ghostly clothes.”
Jin Guijuan: “That way, they won’t recognize us.”
Jing Qizhen’s group, consisting of both men and women, with Old Xiao sweating profusely and Grandma Fang’s noticeably graying hair, as well as a foreigner with a heavy Sichuan accent, looked casual and unorganized, almost like a chaotic group of people rather than a disciplined team.
It had to be said, the team that obviously didn’t look official at all managed to easily gain the trust of the people inside.
The few people who had just been screaming in panic were at least physically mature and it was hard not to feel sympathy toward Jing Qizhen’s group. Shaking their heads and sighing, they said, “You actually managed to fool those ghosts? Impressive. Come on in!”
Jing Qizhen and the others quietly observed the people inside. For now, it seemed like they were all just ordinary people; real ordinary people, with not even particularly strong physiques.
Lu Lingxi exchanged a glance with Jing Qizhen and Wilcox. If there weren’t any unexpected factors, their group was actually the stronger side in terms of numbers and ability. So they said nothing and simply went along, entering the room.
After both sides sat down facing each other on the hospital beds, Jing Qizhen directly spun a half-true, half-false story.
Jing Qizhen said, “We woke up inexplicably and found ourselves in this hospital. I wanted to find a doctor or nurse to ask what was going on, but when I stepped out, I saw the hallways were full of ghosts. I was so scared I didn’t even dare to make a sound. Thankfully, I saw other people around and we grouped together.”
Following the story Jing Qizhen set up, everyone instantly became strangers who had just met.
The only one who truly matched their new setting, Wang Feizhou, hesitantly said, “I thought I was supposed to be an intern here, but I don’t recognize any of those ghosts. The doctor who was mentoring me, the higher-ups I met, they’ve all disappeared…”
Fully committed to their roles, Manman and Si Jiayang held hands tightly, maintaining the chemistry of a couple, and proactively shared their own fabricated backstory.
At the end, Manman shivered and said with lingering fear, “I don’t know what’s going on, but those ghosts seem to still be running the hospital. It’s like they don’t even realize they’re ghosts. It’s so scary!”
Her words immediately resonated with the few people who were already in the ward.
“Yeah! Those ghosts don’t even know they’re dead! They’ve all gone insane!”
Another person nodded repeatedly, eyes tired and confused, his voice full of bitterness. “After so long… if we hadn’t run into you guys and learned there are still living people out there, we would’ve thought we’d gone crazy ourselves…”
Jing Qizhen offered a comforting look and continued agreeing with them, deliberately saying, “Those ghosts seem to be circling around that one building.”
Someone replied, “They used to wander over here too, but after we sprinkled chicken blood to ward off evil, they didn’t dare come anymore.”
Jing Qizhen’s group all very cooperatively showed a look of immense relief. “That’s great to hear.”
With his back to the others, Lu Lingxi made a key-turning gesture toward Jing Qizhen. Jing Qizhen gave an almost imperceptible nod to show he understood.
The main entrance to the ward building was clearly only lockable from the outside.
If everything those people just described were true, then how do they explain the lock? Unless the so-called survivors locked themselves in and also climbed in through a window like Jing Qizhen’s group.
However, none of those suspicions were voiced. Everyone seriously played their roles as survivors who had narrowly escaped the haunted hospital through disguises and luck, their faces full of confusion and unease.
Next, the people hiding in the ward told Jing Qizhen’s group a story that fit the current circumstances but completely contradicted what the ghost doctors and nurses had said.
“Everyone in the hospital is dead, but they’ve all become ghosts. When there are no people around, the ghosts seem to act just like they did when alive, wandering around the hospital. But once they sense a human, they go insane, chasing and hunting them… The living people who used to be with us are all dead. Only us few are left.”
“Everyone’s dead. Even in death, there’s no peace.”
“…Can we really still survive?”
The despair and breakdown in the survivors’ voices were impossible to hide, until one of them, a bit emotional, said, “Luckily, you showed up. Now we know there are still other survivors…”
After exchanging looks with his group, Jing Qizhen suddenly asked, “What’s the situation outside the hospital? Didn’t anyone call the police?”
