- Chapter 110 - The fear of ghosts
Jing Qizhen looked at Wang Feizhou’s stunned expression and said quietly, “Kidnapping a ghost isn’t hard. The hard part is figuring out what to do after kidnapping it.”
Wang Feizhou was instantly shocked. “You’re planning to dispose of it too?”
For once, Jing Qizhen, who usually left others speechless, was himself choked by the question.
He looked Wang Feizhou up and down, confirmed that his peer was simply still in a state of excessive nervousness, and replied calmly, “We don’t know why this ghost came to the equipment room or what it came to get. That means this ghost is on duty and our time before being discovered is extremely limited.”
In other words, the problem had only been temporarily delayed, not solved.
Lu Lingxi, going back to the spot where Wang Feizhou had grabbed the white coat earlier, picked out two more white coats and, without hesitation, wrapped the unconscious ghost even more tightly.
Wang Feizhou was dumbfounded. He cautiously asked, “Wasn’t it already knocked out and tied up?”
The next second, Lu Lingxi tied the white coat to the heavy medical equipment storage cabinet nearby.
Jing Qizhen immediately understood Lu Lingxi’s reasoning. “It can float.”
Lu Lingxi nodded. “Exactly. We can’t float. Even though the ceiling isn’t that high, if it starts floating, it’ll be hard for us to act.”
To Jing Qizhen and the others, the ghost was like a helium balloon. It might have been knocked out easily and looked frail and weak, but who knew when it might suddenly float away, leaving them helpless.
Of course, the scariest part was that the seemingly delicate helium balloon could explode at any moment and become instantly dangerous.
Encouraged by the others, Wang Feizhou, despite being spooked by Jing Qizhen’s earlier ghost story about a cursed red wedding dress and not wanting to touch another white coat, gave in to his instincts as a medic and started rummaging through the equipment room for disposable gloves.
When Lu Lingxi had knocked the ghost out earlier, he hadn’t used much force, so now the ghost was beginning to regain consciousness.
But it was tied up so tightly in white coats that it couldn’t move at all.
To prevent the ghost from actually ‘floating’ away, Lu Lingxi had even wrapped its head when tying it up, making it so the now-awake ghost was like a chrysalis, unable to even turn its head.
Everyone stood outside the ghost’s line of sight.
Manman thought for a moment and took the initiative to start questioning it. She deliberately lowered and changed her voice as she spoke.
Except for Wang Feizhou, no one looked surprised. After all, voice-changing was something Jing Qizhen had done before.
Only Si Jiayang typed a line on his phone to clarify: [Baby used to do voice acting!]
In Si Jiayang’s mind, ‘Baby’ equaled Manman, so everyone was already used to it.
What was unexpected, however, was that once Manman asked a question, the ghost stammered out a reply with its voice trembling in fear, as if on the verge of tears.
Throughout the questioning, the ghost seemed extremely nervous and panicked, just like an ordinary nurse being kidnapped in a hospital, terrified and helpless.
Watching the ghost tremble from behind and seeing the white coats wrapped around it shake so realistically, Jing Qizhen and the others couldn’t help but feel a moment of disorientation.
It was as if they weren’t facing a terrifying ghost but just an innocent nurse.
Even the Earth, which had been silently observing from Jing Qizhen’s mind the whole time, muttered, “At this rate, it kind of looks like you guys are the villains here, huh?”
Jing Qizhen replied in his mind, “I have a theory.”
The Earth: “Go on.”
Jing Qizhen: “What if, in this erosion area, the ghosts are actually the normal state?”
The Earth: “Huh?”
After throwing out that thought, Jing Qizhen went all-in. He pinched his throat and, using an unbearably strange female voice, asked, “Where are the patients in the hospital?”
The ghost nurse’s expression instantly changed.
It looked even more terrified than before and began to tremble violently.
The others exchanged glances, utterly baffled. What was going on?
Why did just mentioning the patients scare the ghost so much?
A thought struck Jing Qizhen and he simply pulled out Snow White’s Magic Mirror again.
Jin Guijuan saw it and instantly understood. She pointed to the mirror, then at the trembling ghost nurse.
After all, both Manman’s voice and Jing Qizhen’s distorted one had been female. Jin Guijuan simply took the mirror from Jing Qizhen, put on a pair of medical plastic gloves Wang Feizhou handed over, and held the mirror up to the ghost’s face from the side.
Everyone stood behind the ghost and thanks to the height difference, they could clearly see the reflection in the mirror.
Manman cheerfully said to the ghost, “Come on, smile for us.”
The ghost: “QAQ!!!”
The ghost hadn’t burst into tears yet. Clearly, it had a strong psyche.
No matter what Jing Qizhen and the others were thinking, in the eyes of the ghost nurse, the sudden kidnapping felt like a nightmare.
There was no way the ghost could smile but the image that suddenly appeared in Snow White’s Magic Mirror shocked everyone.
It showed a few ordinary people talking in what looked like a hospital room. They were wearing hospital gowns and judging by their faces and hairstyles, it could be inferred that they were from the same era as the hospital.
None of them recognized the people in the image, so it was clear they came from the ghost nurse’s memories.
However, when the ghost saw the image in the mirror, it suddenly let out an extremely terrified scream. The shock it experienced was even worse than when it had been tied up by Jing Qizhen and the others.
Everyone was stunned by the unexpected development.
Jing Qizhen and Lu Lingxi reacted quickly, scrambling to silence the screaming ghost.
Lu Lingxi struck its neck again with the side of his hand.
Jing Qizhen covered the ghost’s mouth with a white coat.
The ghost’s head tilted from the pain and it passed out again.
Si Jiayang’s heart was pounding as he crouched beside the door to the equipment room, listening to the sounds outside.
A doctor and nurse were still chatting, “Where did that scream just now come from? That was creepy.”
“Maybe someone was playing a joke and accidentally scared someone!”
With no further screaming, the ghosts outside didn’t seem to take it seriously. After a few remarks, they all went back to their work.
Si Jiayang continued guarding the door.
Meanwhile, Manman, who had quickly snapped a photo of the mirror’s image, showed it to Jing Qizhen and the others, her voice lowered and brows furrowed. “Those people just now were ordinary humans. Why did the ghost react so strongly?”
Jing Qizhen didn’t see anything strange in the photo either. In fact, the people in the hospital room appeared tense, their facial expressions and stiff postures suggesting they were anxious and clearly not at ease.
It was unclear whether they were worried about their illness or something else entirely.
Jing Qizhen frowned slightly and a fleeting idea from earlier suddenly crystallized into a bold and strange theory. “This world isn’t solely made up of ghosts. There are clearly ordinary humans here too!”
Manman and Si Jiayang exchanged glances and said almost in unison, “The ghost is afraid of those patients who look like normal humans?”
Lu Lingxi also noticed something and asked quietly, “Little Jing, when you showed the ghost the mirror, do you think it saw your arm too?”
The ghost was semi-transparent, while Jing Qizhen and the others were clearly solid.
Jing Qizhen thought for a moment and nodded. “Probably… You mean, the ghost was terrified not because it was tied up but because we have physical bodies?”
Lu Lingxi said, “It’s just a guess. Otherwise, I really don’t understand what was so scary about the people in the image.”
Jing Qizhen fell silent for a moment and then said decisively, “We’ll only know if we try!”
It was hard to get more ghost-related material but there were plenty of living humans around.
Old Xiao, sweating bullets, asked warily, “How exactly are we going to test it?”
Jing Qizhen replied, “Obviously, we can’t just show up in front of the ghost with our real faces…” But wasn’t there still that photo of Yun Shuanghua?
With a perfectly innocent expression, Jing Qizhen pulled out the missing person poster they had made earlier.
Old Xiao, breathing a sigh of relief: “…”
Everyone else: “…”
Fine, Yun Shuanghua is tough anyway.
They quickly accepted Jing Qizhen’s method.
Only Wang Feizhou was still confused. He hesitated for a moment before saying, “Weren’t we looking for him just now?”
Jing Qizhen replied, “We still haven’t found him, have we?”
Wang Feizhou was about to lose it. From when they made the poster to now, with the ghost being kidnapped and everything, had even half an hour passed?
Wang Feizhou muttered, “This is escalating way too fast…”
Jing Qizhen held the missing person poster in front of the unconscious ghost and mused, “Do we have to wait for it to wake up again?”
Lu Lingxi said, “I didn’t hit it hard. It’ll wake up soon.”
Jing Qizhen let out a small breath of relief. “Good.”
Lu Lingxi reached out and gently patted the ghost’s face.
He had been wearing gloves from the hospital since earlier. To avoid triggering the curse of the red wedding dress ghost story situation Jing Qizhen mentioned, he had only put the glove on his dominant hand.
With Lu Lingxi’s skill, if the hospital staff were just ghosts with human-level physical strength, he could handle ten of them alone. One hand was more than enough…
Sure enough, the ghost soon regained consciousness.
Jing Qizhen held the missing person poster in front of it and asked in a disguised voice, “Have you seen this person?”
Everyone closely observed the ghost’s reaction.
As soon as its gaze caught sight of Jing Qizhen’s hand, its body flinched involuntarily, as if it had seen something utterly terrifying.
Jing Qizhen noticed the detail and silently thought, ‘As expected.’
The ghost wasn’t just afraid of being kidnapped. Nor was it afraid of the kidnappers themselves. The true fear seemed to stem from the fact that Jing Qizhen and the others were solid, physical humans.
It feared the existence of ‘humans’ with bodies.
The discovery completely defied their expectations.
Jing Qizhen quickly pushed his thoughts aside and directed the ghost’s attention to the photo of Yun Shuanghua on the poster.
The ghost was still resisting a little but when it saw the photo of Yun Shuanghua, it instantly panicked and screamed, “No, this can’t be! How could he be infected?!”
Seeing that the ghost was about to lose control again, Lu Lingxi immediately struck the back of its neck for the third time.
Jing Qizhen frowned. “So it does know him…”
After the third knockout, even Wang Feizhou, who had initially feared the ghost, had gone numb. His feelings were now… complicated.
Still, the earlier fear lingered in his heart, helping him voice the ghost’s thoughts perfectly, “The way it reacts when it sees humans… is exactly how I feel when I see a ghost.”
