- Chapter 107 - The busy hospital at midnight
Not giving the poor intern any time to react, Jing Qizhen said directly, “You brought your phone, right? Turn on your Bluetooth first.”
The intern, though confused, followed Jing Qizhen’s instructions.
Then, he saw a bunch of uniquely named devices show up in nearby area; ‘Working Man Old Xiao,’ ‘Foreigner,’ ‘Cashier Guijuan,’ ‘Grandma,’ ‘I Love Manman,’ ‘Manman is Me,’ ‘College Student Little Jing,’ and only one with a normal name with the default phone model.
The intern: “…” What the heck is this!?
At the same time, Jing Qizhen, who was about to share a Word document summarizing knowledge about the erosion area with the intern, hesitated slightly and asked Lu Lingxi, whose device name was still the default phone model, “Which one is yours?”
Lu Lingxi glanced over and cooperatively changed his device name to ‘Little Lu.’
That left only the intern’s Bluetooth device as the one without a custom name.
Without hesitation, Jing Qizhen shared the Word document with him.
The intern accepted it instinctively and, probably to blend in, silently changed his device name before reading the file to ‘Hospital Intern Little Wang.’
Jing Qizhen raised an eyebrow slightly but didn’t comment, only saying, “Wait up there for a bit. We’re figuring out how to get you down safely.”
Wang Feizhou nodded. “Okay.”
Though still anxious, he was curious about what Jing Qizhen had just sent him via Bluetooth.
But when he opened the file and read a few lines about the erosion area, he was completely baffled.
Unable to hold back, he asked a question.
As Jing Qizhen and the others were still discussing rescue plans, one of them made time to reply, “Turn on your phone flashlight and check your surroundings. It should be pretty easy to tell whether the building is three or four stories high!” And it wasn’t something that could be faked.
Wang Feizhou silently followed the instructions.
Meanwhile, in the third-floor office, the conversation continued.
Old Xiao wiped his sweat. “The hospital should have ladders but they definitely won’t reach three stories high.”
Gui Juan said, “What about those safety airbags the fire department uses for rescues?”
Lu Lingxi added, “Three stories isn’t that high. If we have some cushioning below, jumping wouldn’t be that dangerous. But honestly, it’s still risky for an ordinary person. How about I go up there and bring him—”
Jing Qizhen shook his head. “Little Wang isn’t a cat you can just carry down.”
Lu Lingxi laughed. “Fair point!”
If it were Gu Leshan, with his physique, he could probably just climb up through the window and haul the intern Little Wang down.
But Lu Lingxi was a sniper and his skills were different from Gu Leshan’s. Even he admitted he wasn’t as physically capable as Gu Leshan.
Manman’s gaze swept across the hospital bed in the room and she suddenly said, “How about we take the window off, stick the bed board out, and let the intern slide along it into the window?”
It wasn’t a bad idea. Under normal circumstances, the bed board was sturdy enough and with so many people inside to hold it down, the weight would prevent it from tilting under pressure when the intern slid onto it.
The only issue was that being on the roof of a three-story building with a narrow bed board would put huge psychological pressure on Little Wang.
It’s like walking across a 10-centimeter-wide plank on the ground. Anyone could do it. But put that same plank 10 meters in the air, suspended in the empty space, and it becomes a test of nerves and balance.
Lu Lingxi said, “I’ll help him, no problem!”
As he spoke, Lu Lingxi took off his backpack, brought only a rope, opened the window, checked the surroundings, and pushed on the rainwater drainage pipe outside. After confirming it was sturdy enough, he nodded. “I’m going up.”
Jing Qizhen pulled out his flashlight to help illuminate the way.
Then, Lu Lingxi deftly climbed up the drainage pipe, pushed off the windowsill, and leapt onto the rooftop.
Wang Feizhou, who was holding his phone with a blank mind despite staring hard at the screen, was suddenly startled to see someone climbing up in front of him. He flinched and blurted out, “Bro, you’ve trained or something?”
Lu Lingxi replied, “Yep. I’ll help you down.”
Wang Feizhou was flustered. “Can’t we call 119 and borrow their ladder truck?”
Jing Qizhen, leaning on the windowsill, listening in, said, “As if we have cell signal right now.”
Manman added, “At this rate, there probably aren’t even mobile phones available on the market!”
Wang Feizhou: “…”
While they spoke, Jing Qizhen and the others forcibly removed the window and angled the single bed’s bed board out of it.
Lu Lingxi said, “I’ll hold you, so slide down from there.”
Wang Feizhou swallowed hard and asked, “What about you?”
Lu Lingxi blinked his innocent Bambi eyes and replied calmly, “Once you’re down, I’ll figure out a way.”
Though he thought the whole scene was insane, Wang Feizhou closed his eyes and gave up resisting.
He lay on the edge of the rooftop, slowly scooted back, and let his legs hang down, trying to reach for the board.
Lu Lingxi walked over, also crouched on the edge of the rooftop, and extended his arm toward Wang Feizhou. “Grab my arm. I’ll lower you down. Just think of it as a reverse pull-up, it’s not that hard.”
Wang Feizhou said in despair, “The height’s not the same!”
Lu Lingxi remained unmoved. “Same difference.”
Wang Feizhou: “QAQ!”
In the end, Wang Feizhou was still dragged down by Lu Lingxi.
When the edge of his foot barely touched the wooden board, Wang Feizhou’s hands were still gripping Lu Lingxi’s arms tightly.
Lu Lingxi said, “…Relax a bit and slide down.”
Wang Feizhou: “I-I-I-I’m too scared!!”
Lu Lingxi hesitated for a moment. “Alright then!”
The next second, Lu Lingxi directly clamped down on Wang Feizhou’s hands and, with zero effort, forcibly pried him off.
Wang Feizhou shouted in terror, “W-what are you doing =口=?!”
Lu Lingxi ignored him and instead called down to Jing Qizhen and the others below, “I’m letting him down!”
Jing Qizhen replied calmly, “Okay.”
Unable to resist at all, Wang Feizhou was tossed directly onto the wooden board by Lu Lingxi amidst his terrified screams, and then slid into the window.
“Aaaahhhhh—!!!”
The friction on the wooden board was pretty high, so Wang Feizhou didn’t slide very fast.
As soon as he tumbled into the window, Jing Qizhen, Wilcox, Si Jiayang, and the others, who had been waiting, reached out and caught the pale-faced intern.
Grandma Fang comforted him gently, “There, it’s alright now.”
Wang Feizhou: “QAQ!” Was he the one who had gone crazy, or were the people below crazy, or was the whole world insane?
Jing Qizhen said, “But he screamed too loudly just now. Who knows if it’ll attract something unexpected.”
Everyone’s heart sank slightly. They knew they had to act quickly.
Lu Lingxi, still on the rooftop, said, “Move the board, I’ll jump straight down.”
The people below immediately followed instructions, clearing the window for Lu Lingxi.
Still shaken, Wang Feizhou looked back and saw Lu Lingxi sliding half a meter down the drainpipe, then deftly jumping through the window.
Jing Qizhen: “Let’s change locations first.”
Lu Lingxi patted the dirt off his hands and said, “While I was up on the roof, I saw that all the tall buildings around had disappeared.”
Jing Qizhen nodded. “This erosion area might be larger than we previously thought.”
Si Jiayang looked at Wang Feizhou. “Bro, are you familiar with this place? Know any good hiding spots?”
Wang Feizhou froze and then snapped back to reality. “This is… the third floor? I remember the third floor was where they kept the disinfection equipment…”
Manman said, “What he knows about the hospital doesn’t match how it is at this point in time.”
Jing Qizhen said, “Let’s go. Things got too noisy just now. No matter what, we can’t stay on the third floor.”
As he spoke, Jing Qizhen carefully observed the room’s layout and then casually placed a pinhole camera in a hidden spot.
Wang Feizhou felt like he was leaping through a madhouse.
And yet, despite the commotion they had just caused, the old hospital building remained utterly silent. As if they were the only ones left inside.
They went from the third floor to the first without encountering any danger.
After entering what looked like a duty room and closing the door behind them, the surroundings remained eerily still.
Everyone exchanged looks for a while.
Old Xiao whispered, “This feels a bit like the Yunhai Wancheng Department Store we ran into back then. The whole building was empty.”
Jing Qizhen said, “If there’s no one, then there must be ghosts. The problem is, we haven’t even seen a ghost…”
Manman frowned slightly. “Back then, that ghost lady, Ms. Li, left a bunch of bloody handprints in and outside her office.”
Jing Qizhen checked the time. It was nearly eleven at night. He muttered, “Could it be that it’s not time yet?”
Jin Guijuan had a realization. “Is it like how malls have closing hours? Would the hospital have that too?”
Wang Feizhou: “The night shift and day shift times?”
Jing Qizhen didn’t hesitate. “Details?”
Although Wang Feizhou was already dazed with spiral eyes, maybe his internship had trained an instinct to answer any question.
He replied automatically, “Doctors and administrative staff work overnight shifts. They’re in the duty rooms, where they sleep if nothing’s happening and get up if something comes up. Nurses are split into short night shifts and long night shifts. Short night shifts are from 5 PM to midnight, and long night shifts are from midnight to 8 AM.”
At this, Jing Qizhen’s brow lifted slightly. “Midnight, 8 AM, 5 PM, these might be three key time points.”
So far, they had walked through the old three-story hospital building twice and aside from the lack of people, everything seemed normal.
Manman said, “Should we wait to see if something changes at midnight? But first, we need to find a relatively safe place.”
Jing Qizhen: “The duty room won’t work because doctors show up there. Doctor offices are a possibility but we can’t rule out one randomly returning during a shift. As for the director’s office, that might be high-risk, high-reward.”
Si Jiayang: “Makes sense. Going by game logic, the final boss’s location tends to have fewer normal mobs.”
Wang Feizhou: “…I still don’t understand what you guys are talking about but I recommend the equipment room. Only gear, no people.”
Jing Qizhen smiled. “Let’s go check it out.”
Wang Feizhou instinctively tried to lead the way but unfortunately, the layout of the old building was completely different from his memory. His face turned pale again instantly.
Still, even if Wang Feizhou didn’t recognize the way, the sharp memory of Old Xiao was reliable.
Old Xiao said, “I remember it’s on the east side of the second floor.”
Old Xiao led the way and everyone followed.
Wang Feizhou couldn’t help muttering, “I… I still think this is all absurd.”
Jing Qizhen patted his shoulder. “Watch more news.”
Wang Feizhou gave a bitter laugh. “Too busy… Interns have to learn so much. I have to memorize textbooks and write papers every day.”
Jing Qizhen pointed out sharply, “It’s because you don’t check your phone properly. You probably missed all the notifications in your hospital’s WeChat group, which is why you ended up stuck here.”
Wang Feizhou: “…”
The unlucky intern couldn’t help but take out his phone and open the WeChat group. Although there was no internet now, the previous chat history was still accessible.
Sure enough, a few hours ago, the hospital’s main group chat had blown up with several notifications. All hospital staff were to evacuate the Second Municipal Hospital of Binhai City in an orderly manner and all patients were being urgently transferred.
In an instant, Wang Feizhou’s face turned green. His last bit of suspicion toward Jing Qizhen and the others disappeared completely.
He fell into a daze. “I… I didn’t think…”
Looking at the poor kid who had glitched into the wrong map, everyone couldn’t help feeling a little emotional.
Jing Qizhen said earnestly, “Always read your work notifications.”
Si Jiayang added, “I’ve muted all my groups too but I still check every two or three hours.”
Wang Feizhou: “Mm QAQ!” A bloody lesson learned!
Silence enveloped the quiet equipment room.
Wang Feizhou sulked in the corner, summoning the same energy he used to cram for anatomy exams before finals. He started reciting the information Jing Qizhen had sent him earlier about the erosion area.
Grandma Fang said gently and fondly, “…This child is working so hard.”
Jing Qizhen: “…”
As a fellow college student, watching Wang Feizhou shrink into a ball in the corner, looking so pitiful, he actually felt a little sympathetic.
As midnight approached, everyone became alert. Even Wang Feizhou, who had been memorizing nonstop, stood up with the rest.
There was no need to check the pinhole cameras they had placed earlier. The very moment the clock struck midnight, the previously silent hospital suddenly came alive.
Seeing the halls full of busy ghost figures in white lab coats, everyone gasped.
It was as if the previous silence was because the doctors and nurses were off duty, and there truly was no one in the hospital. But now, after midnight, the ghosts had collectively returned to work.
