The moment Wei Zhenge regained consciousness from sleep, he felt as if he was restricted. He couldn’t ignore the warmth radiating from his waist area. His somewhat hazy consciousness instantly cleared.

Looking up, all he could see was a broad, hard chest. The morning light cast a gentle, warm layer on it, showing off the well-defined muscles. They were neither excessively bulky nor too lean, resulting in a perfectly balanced physique. The abs were clearly visible, and the body lines were smooth.

There was no doubt about the excellent physique, but the key thing was, Jian Yuanbai’s hand was placed on Wei Zhenge’s waist. His palm was loosely wrapped around him. His chin rested on top of Wei Zhenge’s head in a protective manner, but also an extremely intimate posture.

Wei Zhenge was highly uncomfortable. Even for two men, this closeness was too much. So close that he could feel the warm breath of Jian Yuanbai brushing over the top of his head.

Jian Yuanbai’s two acts of protection the previous day held him from kicking Jian off the bed. Instead, he picked up Jian’s hand and sat up with a frown.

Yet, the fact that this man sneaked onto the bed in the middle of the night made Wei Zhenge somewhat uncomfortable. They had agreed that he would sleep on the bed and Jian on the couch. What does this sneaking around mean?

Thus he moved a bit more intentionally, clearly hoping to stir Jian awake.

Wei Zhenge was aware of his biological clock, it wouldn’t be past 5 AM yet.

“You’re awake?” Jian Yuanbai was awakened by his movements. Sleepy-eyed, he reached out for his phone on the bedside table and checked the time. It was 4:30 AM. “So early? What are you up to?”

Wei Zhenge, with an honest look on his face, answered truthfully, “I need to study.”

Jian Yuanbai’s sharp eyebrows deeply furrowed, owing to his sleepiness, his aura was very low as if he was on the edge of anger.

Seeing Jian Yuanbai in this state, Wei Zhenge’s heart tightened. How could he forget to avoid provoking this man as much as possible? Because of the events of yesterday, he let down his guard and deliberately provoked Jian Yuanbai, which was clearly unwise.

He was somewhat regretful. If only he had gotten out of bed quietly… Apprehensive that Jian Yuanbai might lose his temper, Wei Zhenge was more nervous and expressionless.

All he could do was watch Jian Yuanbai’s actions.

Jian Yuanbai looked gloomy as he sat up.

Jian Yuanbai lifted the blanket and got out of bed.

Jian Yuanbai stood by the side of the bed looking at him.

Feeling anxious, Wei Zhenge stole a glance at the tall man in his pajamas, realizing that he would have no chance of winning if a fight were to break out.

Jian Yuanbai saw Wei Zhenge blankly sitting on the bed, guessing that he got up too early, and his brain hadn’t quite woken up yet. With a voice that held traces of grogginess from sleep, he said, “I’ll go get you some breakfast. You can sleep a bit longer.”

“How can I study with an empty stomach?”

Watching Wei Zhenge’s messy hair and adorable furrowed expression, Jian Yuanbai couldn’t resist ruffling his hair before leaving.

Wei Zhenge’s sleepy resentment was instantly soothed, and Jian Yuanbai left feeling content.

With a puzzled expression on his face, Wei Zhenge sat on the bed thinking. He did know that Jian Yuanbai was indeed hired by the Wei family. He was well aware of the character of every member of the family. From their words, along with Fu Pengyi’s words, it was clear that they had actually hired a gambling loser.

Wei En liked to spread stories about Wei Zhenge being miserable, and he wouldn’t lie about such matters. Nor would he lie to his friends about this since he cared about saving face.

Yesterday, when Wei Zhenge was carried away from the Wei family, he thought it might be a play concocted by Jiang Xuelan. For example, that slap from Jian Yuanbai would make Wei’s father hate him even more.

However, after regaining his senses, Wei Zhenge realized that it couldn’t be possible. One reason was that Jiang Xuelan had no need to set this trap for him. His status in the Wei family was even lower than that of a servant. The chances of Wei Zhenge inheriting the family wealth were slim. Secondly, Wei’s father had absolute authority in the family. It may seem like he was calling to inquire about Wei Zhenge and complaining about Jiang Xuelan’s behavior on the phone.

But in actuality, Wei Zhenge’s father, Wei Chengye, cared only about himself and his own face. If he knew that Jiang Xuelan had orchestrated the public slap, she would be in a terrible situation.

Hence, Jian Yuanbai was indeed someone the Wei family had deliberately sought to humiliate him.

Wei Zhenge rubbed his temples and got out of bed. Surprisingly, Jian Yuanbai didn’t cause him any trouble but instead took care of him.

Being woken up at 4:30 AM, although Jian Yuanbai was sleepy and grumpy, he promptly got up and bought breakfast for Wei Zhenge.

Wei Zhenge genuinely didn’t understand what Jian Yuanbai was aiming for.

He decided to ask.

When Jian Yuanbai returned after buying breakfast, he saw Wei Zhenge already sitting on the couch waiting for him.

Breakfast consisted of soy milk and rice noodles, and Jian Yuanbai handed a pair of disposable chopsticks to Wei Zhenge only after unwrapping them. “Eat up.”

The original owner was poor, and there was no dining table at home. The two could only eat on the coffee table, sitting side by side on the couch without speaking, quietly enjoying their rice noodles.

Wei Zhenge hadn’t figured out how to start the conversation, while Jian Yuanbai was simply too sleepy, yearning to finish eating and go back to sleep.

Most people, when eating soup-based noodles, often end up with unsightly oil splatters. Not Jian Yuanbai. He eats quickly and adeptly, gripping the noodles such that no oil drops splash. Add to this his handsome appearance and even the simple act of eating noodles becomes a pleasing sight.

Wei Zhenge, on the other hand, isn’t keen on oily breakfasts, especially the red soup rice noodles that Jian Yuanbai had brought back. Consequently, he ate slowly and took the opportunity to watch Jian Yuanbai closely.

As he observed, something suddenly occurred to him. From the braised pork rice from the day before to the soy milk rice noodles of this morning, Jian Yuanbai seemed to never ask his preferences, always buying according to his own tastes.

Wei Zhenge wanted to bring it up but found himself stumbling over how to address Jian Yuanbai, completely clueless on how to call him.

Following his focused gaze, Jian Yuanbai turned to meet his eyes and asked, “You have something to say?”

Unfazed by the attention, Wei Zhenge asked, “What should I call you?”

“I’m currently your guardian,” Jian Yuanbai answered, pulling an all-nighter. Although he knew he couldn’t explicitly mention it, he paced the conversation a little, “Considering your dad doesn’t necessarily treat you right, and might even kick you out once you reach 18.”

His sharp gaze fell on Wei Zhenge, giving him a foreboding feeling. “…So?”

In response, Jian Yuanbai said, confidently, “How about I become your dad?”

Wei Zhenge: …

This comment, not only left Wei Zhenge stunned but also surprised the system that had been monitoring Jian Yuanbai’s every action: You sure are gutsy, host.

In the disoriented moment following that startling statement, he was reminded of the scene where, at the Wei residence, Jian Yuanbai, with his chin slightly raised, arrogantly demanded to be called ‘grandpa.’

Despite his handsome features and the dominant chill of his demeanor, it didn’t deter Wei Zhenge from thinking that he might be a bit unhinged.

Now, with Jian Yuanbai’s utterly serious face, Wei Zhenge began to regret ever addressing the subject of tasteful naming and started questioning his perception of Jian Yuanbai. Perhaps he wasn’t the aloof and savage person he appeared to be.

Doing his best to maintain a natural expression, Wei Zhenge articulated as if he hadn’t heard the previous comments, “How about I call you ‘Jian Ge’ from now on?”

Jian Yuanbai’s disappointment was apparent, and it was so evident that Wei Zhenge’s understanding of his reticent cool-guy persona began to waver.

He thought Jian Yuanbai might have something to say or might even insist on being addressed in a specific way, but instead, he seemed dejected to resignedly sigh.

In fact, since their first encounter, everything Jian Yuanbai did was beyond Wei Zhenge’s expectations.

Wei Zhenge said, “If it’s merely due to Wei Household’s contract, you didn’t need to do all this. I’ve seen the contract, you’re not earning much.”

The Wei House paid him fifty thousand, this amount even included his tuition fees and living expenses. The most critical part of the contract was that during the time when Jian Yuanbai was acting as guardian, he could get Wei Zhenge to offset the costs by working. Having a laborer and getting paid, this was likely why Jian Yuanbai had signed the contract.

But contrary to what one might assume, Jian Yuanbai didn’t order him around but instead had him run errands. The only requirement was to solve a piece of jadeite every week. This was what puzzled Wei Zhenge.

Without missing a beat, Jian Yuanbai imparted, “The key is that you’re good-looking.”

He didn’t want to play parent to a seventeen-year-old boy unless he was good-looking. How handsome Wei Zhenge was! So handsome that the view of his swollen face from his father’s beating kept Jian awake at night, so much that he not only retaliated during the day, but also resented his father.

If he was not good-looking, after retaliating for him during the daytime, Jian Yuanbai would only cover that face with a blanket at night to avoid making himself feel disgusted.

Sometimes, the bluntness of Jian Yuanbai’s words left Wei Zhenge unsure of how to react, “… thank you?”

“You’re welcome.”

This awkward silence compelled Wei Zhenge to want to flee, he promptly said, “Didn’t you say you wanted me to help you with the jadeite?”

Jian Yuanbai, showing little interest, replied, “Then let’s begin.”

Simultaneously, he called out mentally to the system, “Can you show me a jadeite working tutorial?”

The system responded, “Don’t call me that. Since you’re using the original host body, you should be able to use the skills he could. You should know what to do once you get your hands on the jadeite.”

There was no problem with this statement. The problem was, that Jian Yuanbai was not using the original host body.

But he couldn’t tell the system, “Just in case if anything goes wrong, can you show me, just to be safe?”

Ignoring his calls, the system, out of annoyance, shared a video of the original host working on Jadeite and then disconnected.

Following the video tutorial, Jian Yuanbai’s movements were fluid and practiced. This level of expertise couldn’t be gained without years of experience which didn’t arouse Wei Zhenge’s suspicion.

“You should try.”

Leaving this phrase behind, Jian Yuanbai headed toward the main bedroom.

Wei Zhenge was doing this for the first time. The person who taught him only did so once, so it’s inevitable that there would be some stumbles. He didn’t want to waste more time here, as he still had tasks to complete. After trying a bit by himself, he decided to call Jian Yuanbai for another lesson.

The door to the master’s bedroom was open, so Wei Zhenge went straight in.

Jian Yuanbai was sitting in front of the computer, deeply concentrating on something.

Wei Zhenge: …

He purposefully made some noise with his footsteps. He saw Jian Yuanbai quickly close the webpage he was looking at and then turned to him with a forced calmness and said, “Good timing, let me show you how to distinguish jade quality, to prevent you from damaging quality goods with your clumsy handling.”

Wei Zhenge found this rather hilarious and a bit numb, he had half a mind to remind Jian Yuanbai that he didn’t need to hide that webpage. However, the title of the article was so huge that he had noticed it the instant he entered the room.

What to do when a child doesn’t acknowledge their father? Experts provide the following child-rearing advice.

Translator Footnotes:

凌晨四點半 (Língchén sì diǎn bàn) – 4:30 AM: “凌晨” translates to the early hours of the morning, before dawn. “四點半” refers to 4 o’clock and a half, meaning 4:30.

紅湯米粉 (Hóng tāng mǐfěn): Red soup rice noodles: A type of noodle dish served with much reddish soup usually flavored with tomatoes or chili-based sauces.

解石 (jiě shí): This refers to the process of carving a piece of rough jadeite to reveal the valuable jade underneath. This requires experience and skill.

毛料 (maoliao): Refers to the raw, uncut jadeite. In the jade industry, it is risky to work with maoliao since the value inside is unknown, emphasizing the importance of expertise in distinguishing jade quality.

LOL, I can’t believe he was looking at it on the web
