I Really Didn't Want the Long Aotian to Be My Wife [Quick Transmigration] - Chapter 16
“Yi Ge, Wei Zheng Ge still hasn’t shown up at school today,” a student, as devious as Fu Pengyi, spoke nervously to him.
Even though he was still a student, he had a cunning aura about him.
Fu Peng Yi sneered, “He dared to do something like that but doesn’t dare to come to school? He’s making me lose face. Does he think he can get away by not coming to school?”
At first, Fu Pengyi never thought of using any means to force Wei Zheng Ge to leave the school. It only crossed his mind when he overheard his father talking with his subordinates about dealing with rivals, “If you’ve offended someone, you must press them down so they can never rise again in their lifetime. Otherwise, you’re just burying future troubles.”
With that in mind, Fu Pengyi thought of a ploy to tarnish Wei Zheng Ge’s reputation and get him expelled. His plan seemed to go smoothly at first, as he could pin the title of a thief on Wei Zheng Ge and make him hang his head in shame.
Yet, all went awry when Jian Yuan Bai intervened. Fu Peng Yi’s expression twisted for a moment, recalling how his father lectured him after they bailed people out from the police station.
As Fu Peng Yi grew angrier and his pride wounded, he abruptly stood up and stormed out of the classroom, not considering his flabbergasted lackey who didn’t know whether to follow or not.
He headed straight to the office of the grade director, knocking on the door and barging in without giving the person inside a chance to respond, “Director, is it alright that Wei Zheng Ge hasn’t come to school for days?”
Fu Peng Yi casually sat on the chair opposite the director, propping his hands up on the desk, “He’s still a student, right?”
The grade director glared at him, headache evident on his face, “It’s normal for him to not come to school for a few days after what happened.”
Fu Peng Yi had no interest in listening to these explanations, “Then call him, tell him he’ll be expelled if he continues skipping school without reason.”
“We can’t just do that within a few days. It’d be bad for the school’s reputation,” the grade director said helplessly.
However, Fu Peng Yi smiled knowingly, “If you don’t want to make the call, it’s fine. There are others who are willing to. Someone who would not only make the call but become the director as well.”
The grade director’s face paled, “Fu student, even if your father is the school’s largest shareholder, he can’t just replace a director like that.”
Fu Peng Yi gestured at the phone on the desk, “Call or not?”
Busy and overwhelmed, Jian Yuan Bai answered the call from an unknown number. Before he could ask, the stern voice on the other side questioned, “Are you Wei Zheng Ge’s guardian? He has been absent from school for a few days now. If this continues, we’ll consider expelling him.”
Jian Yuanbai frowned in disbelief, asking, “Are you sure that my little Zheng Ge’s performance must be in your school? Doesn’t he have to be in a school to take the college entrance examination?”
“Expel him, right? Handle it right away and if there’s any paperwork that needs signing, come find me at Zhen Ge Limited Company. Do you understand how busy I am?”
Before hanging up the phone, Jian Yuanbai added, good-naturedly but with a tinge of sarcasm, “When will you get your mind checked? It seems like you really need it.”
Fu Peng Yi’s face turned green as he listened, and before he could respond, there was a knock at the door. He turned to see Tong Le Rong looking at him with a touch of anger, “It’s best to close the door before you plan to do anything wicked.”
“You’re right. Those who try to frame others but have thousands of loopholes themselves really lack brains.”
Fu Peng Yi’s face turned even more sour after the humiliation, but he held back his anger. Then, he heard Tong Le Rong say: “You just got pulled from the jail by your family and already became a laughing stock in the circle. If you don’t want to make any more mistakes and be despised by your father, I suggest you better stay low for a while.”
Tong Le Rong cheerfully said, filling her words with sarcasm, “Besides, your family does have quite a few illegitimate sons, right?”
She turned and left, not minding the loud crash as a huge chair behind her got kicked over.
Tong Le Rong remembered clearly that Wei Zheng Ge’s birthday was in two days. She didn’t want Fu Peng Yi to cause any trouble and upset Wei Zheng Ge on his special day.
A glint of anticipation flashed in her eyes. It had been several days since she last saw Wei Zheng Ge. With the upcoming birthday, she could use the opportunity to see him.
Although she didn’t know where Wei Zheng Ge was living now, the address mentioned by the man on the phone was clear to her.
Zhen Ge Limited Company… The name carried one of Wei Zheng Ge’s characters. Tong Le Rong didn’t think much about it, but she was curious about this guardian who suddenly appeared.
……
As the days quickly passed in peace, Wei Zheng Ge, refraining from school, found his life not that different from when he was in school. His days were so crammed with courses, papers, and exercises that he was even busier than before, especially since all six teachers were solely focused on him.
He was busy, but Jian Yuanbai was even busier. Leaving even before the break of dawn and returning when it was already dark, they seemed to live under the same roof but barely had any conversation.
Wei Zheng Ge knew that Jian Yuanbai started a company but never asked about its nature. He also glossed over the issue of the unaccepted 50,000 yuan transfer with the excuse of having some money.
And Jian Yuanbai, truly busy as he was, did not question further when he saw that Wei Zheng Ge was financially stable for the time being.
Wei Zhenge wrapped up his day of studying early today. Even now, it wasn’t quite ten o’clock – an entire hour earlier than he usually retired for the night. With practice book in hand, he made his way to the living room and settled into the sofa.
The vast living room was void of any lighting, the only illumination coming from the twinkling lights of buildings beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows; the contrast was stark – this room was utterly quiet and solitary.
And yet, it was this kind of darkness that comforted Wei Zhenge far more than the usually bright and lively atmosphere in the nursing rooms of his family home in years past.
He still didn’t turn on the light, the only source of glow was the bluish hue of the TV screen playing some random melodrama. Wei Zhenge was seated comfortably in the cushy sofa, his features hidden in the darkness, making it impossible to make out his obscure expressions.
Rather than facing straight ahead, he had his head slightly lifted, revealing a fair and flawless jawline. He gazed upward at the clock hanging on the wall, observing each passing minute.
Rather than the thrilling plot of the TV show, the monotonous movement of the clock hands seemed to captivate him more.
As the minute hand pointed to 11:45, the sound of a key turning in the lock broke the silent atmosphere.
For some reason, Wei Zhenge’s heart quickened. But he didn’t rise from his seat. Instead, he watched as Jian Yuanbai walked in.
Spotting Wei Zhenge, Jian Yuanbai was about to say something but instead yawned from exhaustion, “Why aren’t you turning on the lights? Watching TV in the dark isn’t good for your eyes.”
With that, he switched on the room lights, instantly brightening the surroundings, making the room one of the many lit-up homes around.
Wei Zhenge stared blankly for a moment before replying, “I was about to go sleep, didn’t bother to turn on lights.”
Jian Yuanbai sat down beside Wei Zhenge on the sofa. Despite his tired face, he conversed with Wei Zhenge about daily life, “How have you been with your studies and daily routines at home these days?”
“All is well,” replied Wei Zhenge.
Looking at Jian Yuanbai’s tired features, he suddenly offered, almost on impulse, “You seem very tired. May I give you a massage?”
Jian Yuanbai turned to look at him and replied, “No need for that. Don’t waste your time in the night; get some sleep, so you’d have energy for studies in the morning.”
His tone was calm and mature, almost as if he were a parent. Internally, however, he was wailing to his system, “Oh no, he cares about me!”
“My well-raised kid is so caring. I’m so tired, really wish to go straight off to bed.”
The system responded coldly, “If you’re that tired, why are you still sitting here talking to him?”
Overwhelmed with joy, Jian Yuanbai replied, “You won’t understand, I may be as tired as a donkey, but coming home to see my cute little Zhen Ge is what keeps me going.”
Each time he came home to see Wei Zhenge huddled up on the sofa, his bright eyes fixed on him, Jian Yuanbai felt that this version of Wei Zhenge deserved better treatment.
Although he never stated it outright, Jian Yuanbai knew that Wei Zhenge was waiting for him to return.
This was the very reason Jian Yuanbai could persevere; although everything he did tended to go smoothly, rapidly growing a company demanded significant effort, even for him.
He and the system would wail about how tired he was, but in front of Wei Zhenge, he never showed any weakness, remaining calm and dependable.
After being refused, Wei Zhenge stood up from the sofa but didn’t leave. Instead, he sat down at the coffee table, right in front of Jian Yuanbai, “Thank you for the tutor you hired for me, their expertise is truly remarkable.”
Having experienced several days of lessons, Wei Zhenge realized his tutors were exceptionally skilled. The cost to secure one-on-one guidance from them was undoubtedly significant.
Jian Yuanbai chuckled helplessly, ruffling Wei Zhenge’s hair, “I’m your guardian, after all. You don’t have to thank me all the time.”
Wei Zhenge, with his hair tousled, somehow looked even cuter. Already handsome, with the baby fat of a high schooler still on his face, he glowed porcelain white under the dim lights, as if illuminating the room. His slightly chubby cheeks, combined with the mess of his hair, exuded an adorable charm that made one’s protective instincts surge.
Those beautiful eyes of his curved up in front of Jian Yuanbai, revealing a soft smile. Then he heard, “I never asked, why are you so good to me?”
Jian Yuanbai was taken aback for a few seconds by his smile before responding slowly, “But you have asked.”
“Because you’re handsome.”
Wei Zhenge’s smile stiffened; he had indeed asked before, but he never took such a reason seriously. He couldn’t believe anyone would be so caring towards another just because they were attractive. Besides, he wasn’t a girl, so that reason didn’t sit well with him.
His expression serious, he asked, “I’m being serious. I want to know why.”
Jian Yuanbai’s eyebrows furrowed, looking quite fierce, but by now, Wei Zhenge had come to understand him a bit and knew that such an expression simply signified confusion. He then heard Jian Yuanbai answer, “I meant it, too; you really are good-looking.”
After a keen observation of Wei Zhenge’s expression, Jian Yuanbai noticed under the calmness an unguarded insecurity, a doubt. What was he doubting?
Jian Yuanbai was convinced of his own sincerity; if it were someone he didn’t find appealing, he certainly wouldn’t bother doing so much. So, it couldn’t be a doubt about lies.
Then, it must be…
Suddenly, Jian Yuanbai slapped his forehead, “Who said my little Zhentou isn’t good-looking? There must be someone talking nonsense. My little Zhentou just can’t believe in his own appeal.”
Indignant, he declared, “Who lacks such taste? Name them, and I’ll confront them.”
With an expressionless face, Wei Zhenge stood up, left the room without a word, and closed the door quietly behind him.
Jian Yuanbai, left with only his puzzlement, asked the system, “So, he means that he doesn’t believe in his own attractiveness, right?”
As the system stayed silent, he pressed on, “I didn’t misunderstand, did I?”
The clock tower in the city rang twelve times at midnight. Right on schedule, Wei Zhenge’s phone received a message from his friend, Tong Leryong: “Happy Birthday!”
“Hey, Wei, I’ll come find you during the day to celebrate your birthday. Surely, the birthday star can spare a piece of cake for me, right?”
Her tone was playful and cute, mixed with a hint of probing, but Wei Zhenge’s reply was simple, “Thank you, but there’s no need.”
Moments later, he sent another message, “I’m not celebrating my birthday. Please don’t tell anyone that I’m eighteen now.”
