At six in the morning, as dawn was just breaking, Wei Zhenge woke up naturally, thanks to his biological clock. Sitting on the soft bed, he was dazed for a short while before he got dressed and left the bed.

It seems that he won’t be able to go to school for now. He needs to work hard during this time to keep from falling behind. There are still a lot of new courses in the senior year of high school that he hasn’t taken yet. He can’t avoid going to school just because of the issue with Fu Pengyi.

Or maybe he should stay at Jian Yuanbai’s home for a day or two and then tell him he needs to go to school.

While his thoughts were a mess, Wei Zhenge opened his bedroom door, intending to go to the kitchen to see if there were any ingredients to make breakfast. He assumed that it was so early Jian Yuanbai wouldn’t be awake yet.

His assumption was proven wrong the very next moment when he saw a tall figure through the semi-transparent frosted glass door to the kitchen.

As natural as ever, Wei Zhenge entered, saying: “Good morning, making breakfast already?”

The moment the words left his mouth, he saw Jian Yuanbai’s figure stiffen. Immediately, with lightning speed, he dumped the contents of the pot into the trash can by his feet, then calmly turned around: “Morning.”

Feigning ignorance at the confusion on Wei Zhenge’s face, Jian Yuanbai preemptively remarked before he had the chance to speak further: “I’m off to work. Whatever you want to eat in the morning, buy it yourself. Bye.”

As Jian Yuanbai lifted the bag of trash to leave, Wei Zhenge, watching him walk to the entrance, blinked and called after him, “Wait.”

“I’m not waiting. Work is busy, do you understand?” Without turning his head, Jian Yuanbai grabbed the keys, “Time is gold in the startup phase.”

Wei Zhenge could easily guess the reason behind his reaction, he held back his laughter and said: “Are you planning to go to work wearing an apron?”

Jian Yuanbai, who was halfway out the door, froze. He stiffly removed the pink bear-print apron from his body, hung it back on the kitchen hook, put on his wrinkle-free suit jacket hanging by the entrance, and absentmindedly tied his tie. As if remembering something, he said to Wei Zhenge:

“Why are you still wearing yesterday’s clothes? I’ve hung your clothes in your room’s closet, pick something to wear.”

Wei Zhenge nodded, assuming that Jian Yuanbai had simply brought over a few sets of his change of clothes when he moved. He didn’t mind it much.

He frowned at Jian Yuanbai’s tie, bit his lip, and eventually relented: “Let me help you adjust this, your tie.”

With that, he moved closer to Jian Yuanbai, reached out to undo the improperly knotted tie, and swiftly completed a perfect tie knot with his long, delicate fingers.

Wei Zhenge bent over slightly as he meticulously adjusted Jian Yuanbai’s tie. Occasionally his fingers brushed against Jian Yuanbai’s neck as he worked.

The warm touch, like a whisper against his skin, caused Jian Yuanbai’s Adam’s apple to bob uncontrollably. Looking down, he sees Wei Zhenge’s smooth hair, his long eyelashes, and the focus in his eyes.

He was very obedient.

At that moment, this thought suddenly sprung up in Jian Yuanbai’s mind.

“Alright.”

On hearing this, Jian Yuanbai looked at the beautiful necktie knot that Wei Zhenge had made, he instantly felt a surge of joy. It was the tie knot formed by the guy he cared for. This tie knot looked so good.

The key here is, this was a tie his little Wei was actively working on for him! His efforts were not in vain!

Wei Zhenge took a step back, and the moment he looked up, he met with Jian Yuanbai’s comforting smile. He shivered inwardly, his face completely expressionless, he looked at Jian Yuanbai and said, “If you can’t cook, I’ll take care of breakfast.”

Jian Yuanbai’s comforting smile froze on his face. He listened as Wei Zhenge continued calmly, “I’ve seen the charred egg you dumped in the trash can.”

The door closed with a firm thud before Wei Zhenge’s eyes. He looked at the tightly shut door, and his mouth curved into a small smile.

He had planned to ignore it, but who told Jian Yuanbai to force him into this? A glimmer of amusement sparkled in the eyes of Wei Zhenge as he turned and headed into the kitchen.

As the doors closed behind him, Jian Yuanbai’s smile vanished in a heartbeat, his face deflated at once. With a head full of grievances about cooking, he strode towards his office. Before he tried his hand at it, he had never thought that cooking could be this difficult. Running a company seemed much simpler in comparison.

Arriving at the office, he had hardly settled in his chair when he received a call from the lady teacher.

“Hello, is this Wei Zhenge’s guardian?”

“Ah, you may speak now, teacher.” Jian Yuanbai tasked himself, with taking the call while managing numerous files simultaneously.

On the other end of the call, the lady teacher said, “Because this instance of false accusal did not lead to any adverse consequences, the situation was not considered severe. Fu Pengyi was bailed out by his family, Chen Ji and Lin, who falsified evidence and were accomplices, also received only warnings because their crime was ill-conceived.”

“Chen and Lin will be severely punished at the school while due to the externality of the issue, Fu Pengyi will be also given a demerit. Beyond this, no other consequences would follow.”

In response to this, Jian Yuanbai was nonchalant, “I had anticipated this outcome.”

The deed done by the three individuals hadn’t succeeded, so it indeed was counted as an attempt to falsely accuse. Moreover, they were high school students, even if caught, indeed, they wouldn’t face severe repercussions.

There was silence from the teacher for a while. Confused, Jian Yuanbai moved away from his mobile, and seeing the call still active, he asked, “Is there anything else, teacher?”

A sigh could be heard over the phone. Not beating around the bush anymore, she said, “What I mean is, for this time period, it’s best if Wei Zhenge does not come to school.”

She was silent again for a long time on the phone and then cautiously suggested, “I don’t know how you are as a guardian, but if you are able to substitute for his parents, arrange for him to change the school.”

“Even though Jinyang No. 1 High School is the best, with Wei Zhenge’s grades, any school would be willing to accept him.”

The principal of Jinyang No. 1 High School once told all of Wei Zhenge’s teachers not to meddle in Fu Pengyi’s affairs, stating that Wei Zhenge’s family wouldn’t allow him to transfer schools, even if he faced unfair treatment at Jinyang No. 1 High School. He’d still have to suffer silently and bring glory to the school in the college entrance exams.

Hearing this, Jian Yuanbai couldn’t help but laugh, “There’s no need for a transfer. I will make Jinyang No. 1 High School famous.”

The female teacher didn’t persuade any further, after all, this was someone else’s family business. She had once turned a blind eye to Fu Pengyi’s actions; now jumping out to persistently advise seemed rather ridiculous to her.

…

After a morning spent working on practice papers, Wei Zhenge lifted his head, stretching and pinching his fingers to relax them. His gaze fell on the mobile phone lying beside him, his hands pausing mid-motion on his joints.

He made a call, and as the dial tone beeped through the phone, a wave of inexplicable nervousness tightened his chest. This sudden, absurd bout of apprehension caused him to hesitate before speaking after the call was picked up.

Jian Yuanbai’s voice came through, “Xiao Zhen Tou?”

Wei Zhenge pursed his lips, responding softly, “Are you coming back for lunch? I was about to start cooking.”

Jian Yuanbai spoke hastily, sounds of clamor in the background, “I won’t come back for lunch. And tonight, I might come back very late. Don’t bother cooking; it’s too time-consuming. Order whatever you want to eat, I’ll transfer the money.”

With that, he hung up the phone, apparently very busy. The next second, Wei Zhenge’s mobile pinged with a notification, Jian Yuanbai had sent the money.

The amount was generous for a high school student—fifty thousand yuan in total.

Wei Zhenge looked at the orange alert box for the money transfer, unclicked it, and got up heading toward the kitchen.

The refrigerator was depressingly empty. Luckily, Wei Zhenge wasn’t picky, he prepared a simple meal for one, frying up some tomato and eggs, and sat down for a quiet meal alone.

Time alone was not hard to endure, especially buried in endless practice problems. It was hard to notice the passage of time, and it was only when the doorbell rang that Wei Zhenge realized he’d spent another two hours on the papers.

He opened the door, utterly taken aback by the group that stood before him, “Who are you looking for?”

The small entryway was crowded with six people of varied sizes, shapes, and ages, ranging from their twenties to their seventies.

Leading them was a stern-looking old gentleman of perhaps sixty or seventy, who pushed up his glasses, revealing a smile, “Is this Wei Zhenge? We’re the tutors your brother has found for you.”

“For the next year, I will be your math teacher.”

A middle-aged, slightly chubby female teacher standing beside him also smiled and said, “Hello, I’m your Chinese literature teacher.”

The remaining few also introduced themselves, and finally, the math teacher concluded, “We are here to help you plan your schedule for the coming year and to understand your current academic situation in various subjects.”

When they were all done, six pairs of eyes stared at Wei Zhenge who apologized with a smile, “Please give me a moment. I’ll discuss with my brother about this.”

He called Jian Yuanbai who confirmed over the phone, “Didn’t I already tell you? I remember I did.”

“Xiaozhen Tou, just focus on studying hard. I’ll take care of everything else. You just need to concentrate on your studies.”

Jian Yuanbai’s voice was full of energy and enthusiasm, but after speaking a couple of sentences, he immediately hung up the phone.

Wei Zhenge respectfully invited his six teachers into the house.

Even for Wei Zhenge, after spending an afternoon letting the teachers assess his skills through various subject tests, he felt a little dizzy. The teachers didn’t stay for dinner, and Wei Zhenge saw that it was already 11:30 pm.

He cooked a bowl of noodles for his growling stomach, and by the time he finished eating and tidying up, it was already midnight.

At this point, Jian Yuanbai still hadn’t returned.

For some reason, Wei Zhenge blankly clicked back onto the transfer screen. He remembered his first meeting with Jian Yuanbai.

At the doorstep piled up with garbage bags, he told Jian Yuanbai that he only needed his share of the money from the family and he could take care of himself. Wei Zhenge didn’t want to bother Jian Yuanbai.

He vividly remembered the contract Jian Yuanbai showed him, stating that as a guardian, Jian Yuanbai would take care of Wei until he turned 18.

Most importantly, the Wei family had only paid 50,000 yuan in the contract.

Wei Zhenge stared at the chat window that only showed a single transfer, thinking about the quiet number 50,000 in there. He did so until the sound of the door opening startled him.

Jian Yuanbai returned, dressed in a suit. His hair and clothes were still neat, but a tired expression was evident. Seeing Wei Zhenge, he was a little surprised, “Why haven’t you slept yet?”

Wei Zhenge hastily closed his phone and stood up, “I was waiting for you to come back to ask if you’d like something to eat.”

Jian Yuanbai’s expression softened, and he walked over with a smile, ruffling Wei Zhenge’s hair, “I already ate outside. Rest early, don’t you have school tomorrow?”

“Are you getting used to the new teachers? Let me know if you aren’t.”

Wei Zhenge pursed his lips, “It’s a habit, all top-tier teachers.”

“Thank you, big brother,” he paused, “and thank you for the clothes you bought me.”

It was only after Jian Yuanbai had left that Wei Zhenge opened the wardrobe and discovered it was filled with new clothes, not just the few he used to change into.

Jian Yuanbai waved his hand dismissively, looking rather exhausted as he sat down on the sofa, “Don’t mention it, just get some rest early.”

Wei Zhenge nodded, took a couple of steps, stopped, and turned back, Wei Zhenge looked puzzled but only said, “Goodnight.”

Returning to his room, Wei Zhenge pulled out a bank card and an ID card from a secret compartment in his backpack.

On the ID card, the date showed that he was less than a week away from turning eighteen.

No one in the Wei family cared about his birthday or his age; they just assumed he’d graduate high school at eighteen, but Wei Zhenge started school late and was about to turn eighteen.

In reality, as his father, Wei Chengye should have been aware of this, but clearly, he was not a qualified parent.

He knew upon seeing the contract that it was a sick scheme concocted by the Wei family to mess with him during his final year of high school, but the best part was that they had overlooked him so much that they were unaware of his actual age.

Originally, Wei Zhenge didn’t want to create extra problems before coming of age, which was why he didn’t object to the contract upon first glance and willingly left with Jian Yuanbai. There was just over a month until he would turn eighteen as stated in the contract.

According to the contract, he and Jian Yuanbai would part ways just one week from now, but now, holding his ID card, Wei Zhenge hesitated.
