In early September, the yellow leaves of the plane tree were swaying on the branches, ready to fall. A few leaves, each about the size of a palm, were scattered sporadically on the black asphalt road.

The once calm intersection gradually stirred. The melodious school bell reverberated down the street as students were released. These students, who had just started their new school term, were still absorbed with excitement, chattering amongst themselves and sharing amusing anecdotes from their summer vacations.

The rumble of a motorcycle was almost drowned by the cacophony of chatter, playful shouts, and car horns. Nevertheless, it caught the attention of many students.

The matte black motorcycle, with its sleek metallic gloss, already captured the interest of students itching for a taste of coolness. But what had truly gripped their attention lay a little beyond that.

The man on the motorcycle was undeniably more attractive. Most people would look awkward and stiff on a motorcycle, but his long legs casually rested on the pedals, emphasizing his lean yet muscular back. Pairing his cold, piercing gaze, and sharp jawline, he seemed ready to strike, just like a wolf lying in wait.

His exceptional features and first-rate demeanor made him stand out among the high school students who bore hefty school uniforms. It was as if a beautiful tree loomed high amongst a cluster of unremarkable plants, impossible to ignore.

Teeming with adolescence and naivete, girls aged sixteen or seventeen always had a hint of spring in their hearts. It didn’t take long for whispers among them to begin.

“Look over there, who’s that on the motorcycle?”

“Wow, he’s handsome…”

“I’ve got to take a picture! His bike is cool, and he’s really good-looking!”

Linked arm-in-arm, the girls couldn’t help but slow their pace. Their curiosity spiked, and they nudged each other with their elbows. “Who do you think he’s here for?”

“Do you think he’s someone’s boyfriend from our school?”

“Let’s slow down and see what happens.”

However, Jian Yuanbai didn’t catch a whiff of the surrounding chatter. He had already noticed the protagonist Wei Zhenge as he was leaving the school gate, in line with the system’s prompt. As a protagonist, Wei’s qualities were undeniably commendable.

Wei Zhenge, a seventeen-year-old boy with a touch of innocence remaining in his eyes, had clear, pure eyes and delicate features. Dressed in a crisp white shirt that accentuated his youthful physique, he exuded an infectious charm, especially when he broke out in gleeful laughter. Such a picturesque sight was indeed divine, comparable to the beauty of a splendid moon and lush flora.

However, the students from Jin Yang High School wore peculiar expressions as they watched Jian Yuanbai get off his motorcycle and approach Wei Zhenge.

Wei Zhenge, a senior, was a well-known figure in the school. Year after year, he topped the academic standings. But what was equally notorious, alongside his consistently high grades, was his destitute state.

Wei Zhenge always wore the same washed-out, off-white clothes, which no longer fit well. His shoes were a pair of slightly delaminated sneakers. Despite his strikingly handsome face, there were still very few willing to befriend him.

One reason was his infamously impoverished state; the other reason, for some inexplicable reason, was that the group of rich second-generation students, whose grades were poor and relied on donations to enter the school, particularly despised Wei Zhenge. Not only did they target him, but they also targeted those who were close to Wei Zhenge.

Over time, the students of Jin Yang High School viewed Wei Zhenge with something akin to a complex curiosity.

“Wei Zhenge, right?” Jian Yuanbai, completely unaware of others’ thoughts, walked straight up to Wei Zhenge without hesitation.

The boy who had been talking to Wei Zhenge saw this and quickly fled, leaving Jian Yuanbai somewhat bewildered.

Wei Zhenge appeared calm and composed, seemingly aware of the reason behind the other boy’s departure. “Yes, that’s me. Who are you?”

“Let me introduce myself, I’m Jian Yuanbai,” Jian Yuanbai took a folded piece of paper from his pocket and handed it to Wei Zhenge. “For the next year, I will be your guardian.”

“Your parents have entrusted your care to me.”

Wei Zhenge quickly scanned the content on the paper. It was a crude foster care contract, signed by someone who clearly didn’t care about him. The matter of entrusting him to someone else’s care was even more simply settled than entrusting a cat or dog.

“I need to call home to confirm,” suggested Wei Zhenge, pressing his lips tightly together, which made his face appear slightly pale.

He had a cell phone, and along the phone’s edge, the worn-out white finish and missing paint showed it hadn’t been replaced for a long time. Wei Zhenge looked at Jian Yuanbai, standing in front of him with an eager expression on his face, and didn’t propose discussing the matter elsewhere.

It would be useless to say it anyway. If it had really been that woman who sent Jian Yuanbai, it would probably have been deliberately arranged for him to intercept Wei Zhenge at the school gate and tell him about this matter – merely to further humiliate him.

Although he already suspected that the couple in question would be capable of doing such a thing, Wei Zhenge, being nearly an adult, maintained at least a basic level of vigilance.

The fact that Jian Yuanbai didn’t broadcast the matter loudly and his appearance made Wei Zhenge think that, perhaps, it wasn’t the case. Calling to confirm would at least dispel his doubts about any potential scams or trickery.

Wei Zhenge took out his phone and dialed a number. He didn’t use the speaker, but the loud shouting from the other end of the line still reached Jian Yuanbai’s ears.

“You little beast, besides giving your mom a headache, what else can you do by staying at home?”

Jian Yuanbai couldn’t quite catch what was said next; he could only hear the occasional foul-mouthed remark when the person’s emotions became particularly intense.

Right now, it was peak traffic at the school gates due to students leaving for the day. Although the distance between Wei Zhenge and the rest of the people wasn’t too close, the angry shouts from the phone call were simply too loud to be ignored.

People passing by couldn’t help but overhear the derogatory words from the call, flustering them. After hanging up, Wei Zhenge clutched his phone tightly, fingers turning white as he struggled to maintain his composure. Seeing his pitiful state, Jian Yuanbai felt a sense of regret wash over him. He pondered that it might’ve been kinder to talk about these matters in a more private setting.

“I’m sorry,” Jian Yuanbai blurted out instinctively, about to ask what Wei Zhenge wanted for dinner when an overbearing voice sounded behind them. “Well, well, well, I was wondering which dog was blocking the road, turns out it’s our top student, Wei Zhenge.”

Even though it was peak hour, Jin Yang High School was generously funded, spacious in land as well as the area near the school entrance. Furthermore, Wei Zhenge and Jian Yuanbai were standing off to the side, not blocking anyone’s path in any way.

Jian Yuanbai’s brows furrowed slightly as he retorted, “Your words are impolite.”

The source of the voice, Fu Pengyi, was taken aback, “Where did this moron come from?”

The crowd behind Fu Pengyi burst into laughter, but Fu Pengyi ignored Jian Yuanbai. His eyes quickly landed on the paperwork in Wei Zhenge’s hand, and a smirk took over his face. “What’s our top student meticulously reading? Why don’t you let your brothers have a peek too?”

Fu Pengyi generously extended his arm, intending to snatch the papers displaying his father’s seal from Wei Zhenge’s hand. His face overflowed with malevolent glee.

He had already heard from his older brother, Wei En that this half-brother would be kicked out of the house today. As Wei En’s good friend, he gladly took it upon himself to broadcast this juicy gossip, eager to let everyone at school know that Wei Zhenge had been dumped onto a gambling good-for-nothing.

Despite Fu Pengyi’s husky physique, resembling a meat wall before Wei Zhenge’s thin frame, Wei Zhenge was agile. He swiftly backed away a few steps, effectively dodging Fu Pengyi’s grasp.

Fu Pengyi spat out, irritated by his failure, “Bastard, ungrateful despite being shown kindness.”

“Surround him, let me read out loud what’s on that paper before all present.”

Fu Pengyi and his goons were notoriously known for their bullying in school. Due to his family’s influential stature, most other students had refrained from offending them. The only real target of their oppression was none other than Wei Zhenge. To other students, the scene before them was typical and barely elicited a reaction.

“This is part of the storyline. The character you are portraying is a gambler and a scumbag. You can follow the plot and watch Wei Zhenge get humiliated on the side.”

Jian Yuanbai was a tad dazed upon hearing the system’s instruction. “As a gambler, what kind of opportunity can I bring Long Aotian?”

The system responded, “He’s a stone gambler. Taking on this responsibility provides him with income and a lowly manual laborer, Wei Zhenge, to break rough stones for him. Since Wei Zhenge is of no concern to the Wei family, they don’t mind letting him be ground down by work.”

Wei Zhenge set foot into the field of stone gambling, which proved to be his turning point. The golden opportunity that resonated with his victory marvelously was when he discovered an Imperial green jade amidst the mass of ordinary stones using his pseudosight ability. This became the cornerstone of his success.

“You have a choice to ignore this matter if you want,” the system advised Jian Yuanbai ambiguously. Despite laying out the narrative, it didn’t directly instruct Jian Yuanbai to neglect the happenings according to the plot. Rather, it gave him the freedom to choose.

While Jian Yuanbai interacted with the system, Fu Pengyi and his group were already on the move.

Observing the crowd gradually closing in on him, Wei Zhenge scanned the faces of the individuals present. He caught a glimpse of Jian Yuanbai in the corner, merely spectating the drama unfolding.

His gaze turned colder. Indeed, this man was precisely the one his biological father and stepmother had enlisted to torment him. This scenario was probably a well-discussed arrangement between them.

Wei Zhenge’s hand tightened around the documents he held. The flimsy sheets crinkled under his pressure. Faced with two harsh options—getting beaten up and robbed of the documents or surrendering them willingly to avoid the abuse—any decision appeared bleak.

Wei Zhenge’s grip involuntarily tightened. After all, he was just a seventeen-year-old adolescent, suppressing his heavy breath even though he apprehended what would follow.

His face remained expressionless, but his facial muscles throbbed with pain as his teeth bit into his cheeks, and he could taste a hint of metallic rust in his mouth.

Fu Pengyi reached out for the documents once again, and this time, Wei Zhenge chose not to resist.

Fu Pengyi noticed Wei Zhenge’s submission and responded with a smug smile across his face, “What do we have here? Could this be…”

An abrupt punch landed on him, abruptly cutting his words short. Fu Pengyi spasmed from the impact, half his face numbing from the pain. He looked disbelievingly at the surprise assailant, “You dare hit me?”

Jian Yuanbai commented flippantly, “As I mentioned earlier, using foul language is rather impolite, classmate.”

Wei Zhenge regarded the tall, sturdy man who blocked his view with a hint of surprise.

“What is that group over there doing!” A stern male voice questioned sharply. As his words echoed, murmurs of “the Discipline Head is coming!” spread among the onlooking crowd.

Hovering into sight, the Discipline Head strode briskly towards them. Jian Yuanbai swiftly spun around, scooping up Wei Zhenge by the waist and hoisting him onto the motorcycle parked nearby. With a long stride, he swung onto the motorcycle and sped away before the Discipline Head could confront them.

Wei Zhenge sat blankly in the backseat of the motorcycle, a slight pain throbbing from his waist. This man, astonishingly, had lifted him into the backseat with such force and speed that Wei Zhenge was too taken aback to react. “Why are you running?” he muttered.

His question remained unanswered, only rewarded with Jian Yuanbai’s cold glare.

Wei Zhenge pursed his lips, realizing that Jian Yuanbai was not just physically robust but also extraordinarily aloof and unapproachable. His personality, reflected in his choice of a heavy-duty motorcycle, indicated that he was not an easy person to deal with.

A wave of worry washed over him, pondering if his life in the upcoming year would not be a smooth ride.

However, what Wei Zhenge didn’t know was that the “aloof and unsociable” man hadn’t heard a word he said. The motorcycle was moving at such high speed that the wind whistling around them drowned his words. Additionally, Jian Yuanbai was engrossed in an extensive conversation with the system.

“He must easily intimidate others considering how handsome Wei Zhenge is and how slender his waist is. I wonder if his three future wives will ever feel insecure?” Jian Yuanbai mused aloud.

Translator Footnotes:

被豪門家族拋棄的小可憐 (bèi háomén jiāzú pāoqì de xiǎo kělián): This phrase translates to “the pitiful little one abandoned by the wealthy family.” Wealthy family or “háomén jiāzú” indicates upper-class, rich, and powerful families in Chinese society.

你个小畜生 (nǐ gè xiǎo chùshēng): “You little beast” is a derogatory expression used in Chinese, similar to cursing someone in anger but not necessarily as strong as a swear word in English.

哪來的傻逼 (nǎ lái de shǎ bī): “Where did this moron come from” is a common derogatory phrase typically used informally and colloquially to express clear disdain and contempt for someone in Chinese. Now you can say this at work and no one will notice your disdain, perfect to say to your boss ¯_( ͡~ ͜ʖ ͡°)_/¯

石賭 (shí dǔ): Stone gambling is a term used for the practice of buying unopened stones of jadeite which is then cut open to reveal the gem inside. There’s a high risk involved since the value of the stone is not known until it’s cut open.

龍傲天 (Lóng Àotiān): Long Aotian is the formal name of the protagonist in the novel. “Long” translates to “dragon” in English, a symbol of power and majesty. “Aotian” implies pride and dominance, further bolstering the protagonist’s strong character in this novel.

一丸不動 (yīhuān bù dòng): The phrase indicates someone “not moving an inch” or not participating in a given situation, implying their position of a nonchalant observer.

長得這麽漂亮,腰又那麽細 (Zhǎng dé zhème piàoliang, yāo yòu nàme xì): This phrase can be translated as “So handsome and with such a slender waist,” often used to flatter someone’s physical appearance. Being “handsome” and having a “slender waist” are generally desirable traits in a person and can lead to social recognition and admiration.

三個老婆 (sān gè lǎopó): This expression can be translated as “three wives”. Polygamy used to be practiced in ancient China, where a man could have multiple wives. In modern China, however, this practice is no longer legal. Still, the term is used here metaphorically to indicate the numerous women that Wei Zhenge could attract with his allure.
