Everyone panicked and ran forward without hesitation.

Someone rushed into the nearest open door in fear, while the two people behind him instinctively followed in due to the herd effect.

The first person to enter was about twenty years old, wearing a floral shirt. He quickly locked the door, but he didn’t think it was safe. He yelled at the other people standing in the room, “Hurry up and move the sofa and cabinet over to block the door.”

These few people woke up from their daze and quickly followed suit.

The young couple, who didn’t have time to rush into the room, were even more frightened, and their legs and feet were sore. They desperately slapped the tightly closed door.

“Please open the door quickly and let us in.”

“I don’t want to die!”

The man in the flower shirt was still searching for something to block the door; he didn’t pay attention to the cries for help outside.

The three people inside the room seemed to have finally recovered, and one of them couldn’t bear it anymore and said, “Why don’t we let them in? It’s safer to have more people.”

The man in the flower shirt immediately laughed in anger and punched the man, cursing, “If you want to die, get out of here. That strange person is coming over soon. Opening the door is equivalent to dying! And it’s not just this room that had the door open.”

The man who was beaten suddenly realized that he had said something foolish, so he didn’t get angry and went straight to work quietly.

The man in the flower shirt wasn’t really cold-blooded; he knew very well that they couldn’t resist that strange person.

But the frequency of the couple knocking on the door outside was even more intense; their voices were extremely frightened and scared, with strong cries.

The man in the flower shirt cursed these two fools in his mind, then jumped onto the sofa and raised his voice to shout at the couple outside the door, “Aren’t you two going to another room? If you stay in the hallway again, you’ll really die!”

The couple finally realized this, and the boy quickly pulled up his girlfriend, who was half kneeling on the ground with weak legs, ran to the nearest room, and quickly locked the door. Then he dragged his girlfriend to the wardrobe in the bedroom to hide.

The girlfriend couldn’t help but sob in the dark cabinet. The boy quickly covered her mouth, then the girl nodded in panic and stopped crying.

On the other side, seven or eight people ran straight down the hallway, completely forgetting in extreme fear that it was impossible to escape the fourth floor through the staircase.

But there were also people who did it intentionally.

The man in a white shirt ran and pondered at the same time, assuming that when he left the first floor, he would come directly to the fourth floor, which was like a circle of infinite reincarnation. He could play a game of hide-and-seek with that strange person.

As long as it killed the next person, perhaps this terrible nightmare would come to an end.

As the strange person appeared in the hallway, Xia Chenxi quickly ran into the room closest to him. From the corner of his eye, he caught a glimpse of the bespectacled man who was planning to return to Room 406 and urgently shouted, “Come here!”

The man was the resident in apartment 406 who previously answered Xia Chenxi’s question.

Under the thick haze of fear, he couldn’t think at all and instinctively ran over.

After closing the door and locking it, the two of them worked together to move the sofa and cabinet door to block the door.

The corridor had now fallen into silence.

The chains clattered on the floor, and Xia Chenxi quickly tightened his grip on the steel pipe in his hand, which he found in this room.

The resident of apartment 406 looked around and went to the kitchen to get a kitchen knife. His palms were sweating from nervousness, making him almost unable to grip the handle of the knife. He stared at the door in fear, trembling all over.

At this moment, Xia Chenxi was both very nervous and afraid, but his brain was extremely excited as he calmly pondered the situation.

Just now, he deliberately let in the resident in 406.

There were two purposes.

Firstly, he was attempting to save resident 406, and secondly, he wanted to prove one thing.

It was obvious that the first victim was a resident of apartment 402, while the second victim was a resident of apartment 404.

So the next one to be targeted was very likely to be resident 406.

That was the man with glasses beside him.

Therefore, Xia Chenxi had to call the Glasses Man in; otherwise, if he returned to the apartment, he would undoubtedly die.

As for now…

If the person who was supposed to be in apartment 406 hid in another room with him, would the strange person still go to apartment 406 next?

Or would he come to this room?

Xia Chenxi wasn’t sure; he just wanted to gamble on these two possibilities because if he didn’t find a way to save the resident in 406, he would be the next one to be targeted!

Because his apartment number was 408.

Saving the lives of the resident in apartment 406 was equivalent to saving himself.

Xia Chenxi slowed down his breathing and listened carefully to the movement outside the door.

Woooo.

Woooo.

The sound of the chain approached and finally stopped not far away; then it was followed by the sound of the door being broken, accompanied by screams.

Xia Chenxi immediately became nervous, and his expression slightly changed.

The monster attacked another room, but the question was, was it apartment 406 or another apartment that was attacked?

If it was apartment 406, it meant someone had entered.

Xia Chenxi regretted not closing apartment 406 in advance to prevent other residents from entering.

But if it was another room…

All his previous speculations would be completely unfounded.

The man with glasses trembled even more violently as he listened to the screams of several people outside the door.

Soon, the surroundings became quiet again.

The sound of chains belonging to the monster faded away and finally disappeared.

Xia Chenxi slowly approached the door and glanced at the corridor through his cat’s eye.

The corridor was empty at this time, and the voice-controlled lights had already automatically turned off. The corridor was shrouded in darkness, making it difficult to see clearly.

Xia Chenxi dared not relax.

The man with glasses next to him came over and touched Xia Chenxi, silently asking, “Has it left?”

Xia Chenxi cautiously shook his head, indicating that he didn’t know.

The two of them fell silent again.

After about ten minutes, the corridor suddenly lit up, and a few people appeared at the end of the corridor. Other residents noticed these people through their cat eyes and cautiously opened the doors.

Xia Chenxi didn’t move.

When everyone gathered in the corridor, Xia Chenxi said to the man with glasses, “Let’s go; we can go out now.”

It was already safe outside.

The two of them moved the sofa and wardrobe away from the door and immediately caught everyone’s attention.

“It’s strange that no one died this time,” said the boy in a short shirt.

Many people glared angrily.

“What do you mean by that? Isn’t it okay if there’s no one dead?”

“How could you curse people like that?”

The short-shirted man didn’t get angry; he just stared at these people with a silly gaze. “The last one to be killed was 402, and this time it went to apartment 404. Guess who the next one to be targeted should be?”

Everyone looked at the man with glasses.

This person once said he was a resident of apartment 406.

But with it came even greater confusion: how could he not have died?

Suddenly, one of the girls said, “I understand!”

Everyone looked over anxiously, and they immediately urged, “Speak quickly.”

The girl seemed a bit nervous, but she still expressed her guess: “At that time, I and a few people happened to hide in room 406, and then that strange person broke through the door.”

Everyone was horrified to hear this.

The girl calmed down and continued, “All of us thought we would be killed, but strangely enough, that strange person went out from the hole it made.”

“Now I understand that the reason why that strange person didn’t kill us is because we are not residents of 406.”

“And the real resident of apartment 406 went to another room, so everyone survived.”

Everyone suddenly realized and felt that resident 406 was quite lucky to have escaped death.

After listening to the girl’s words, Xia Chenxi glanced back at apartment 406, there was indeed a hole with fingerprints belonging to the strange person visible.

Thinking back on the several screams he heard before, it confirmed that what this girl said was true.

The next target of the monster was indeed the man in apartment 406, which was why it headed straight to apartment 406, but it left because the residents inside weren’t the ones it wanted to kill.

At the same time, it didn’t go to other rooms to find him.

This was the most important point.

At this point, apartment 406’s occupant’s face had turned pale, and his legs were so weak that he sat down directly on the ground, and everyone assumed that he was scared because he heard that he was the next one to be killed.

In fact, resident 406 suddenly remembered something.

If it weren’t for the young man next to him asking him to come in, then he might have already returned to his apartment at that time.

It was self-evident what would have happened.

Death was so close to him at the time. Thinking of this, the man with glasses trembled again and looked up at Xia Chenxi. “Thank you, thank you.”

Xia Chenxi shook his head.

Others were puzzled, but it was the short-shirted man who understood. He looked at Xia Chenxi and said, “It seems you already knew that the monster was going to kill him? No wonder you asked who the resident in apartment 406 was.”

Everyone also remembered this detail and understood better why this person stayed with the resident in apartment 406.

After learning about the order of the monster’s murder, a person said, “So, will the resident in apartment 406 be targeted next? Or will it target apartment 408’s resident?”

“By the way, who is the person in 408?”

Xia Chenxi looked up and answered, “I am.”

Everyone was stunned for a moment.

Xia Chenxi said, “Next, I and resident 406 will go to other rooms separately to hide before the next hour.”

“But… why is it the next hour?” Some people were puzzled.

“But in this way, are the residents of 401, 403, and other odd-numbered rooms safe?” The girl said this as she instinctively looked at Xia Chenxi.

Everyone instinctively looked at Xia Chenxi, hoping that he could give a definite answer.

Xia Chenxi responded, “I don’t know.”

Everyone was a bit uneasy, and for safety reasons, they decided that in the coming time, no one was allowed to return to their own room but instead they’d go to someone else’s room, completely avoiding the possibility of being killed.

Xia Chenxi frowned slightly and remained silent, vaguely feeling that he had overlooked some clues.

An hour quickly passed.

Xia Chenxi took out the key from the apartment and locked the door.

The corridor returned to silence once again, and no one stayed in their own apartments. At the same time, 408 was the only empty apartment, with no one inside.

Everyone knew very well that the next apartment that the monster was going to was very likely 408.

At this time, Xia Chenxi was staying in apartment 405, while the man with glasses in apartment 406 was staying in apartment 402. This was the only apartment where the resident had died, but the door wasn’t damaged.

Soon, footsteps could be heard again in the hallway.

The chains clattered on the ground, and everyone remained silent as they stared at the strange person’s every move in the hallway through their cat’s eyes.

Xia Chenxi was the only person who didn’t check.

He was naturally cautious and worried that doing so might attract the attention of the monster, as he was now the monster’s target.

The strange person arrived at the apartment and gently turned the door handle.

It didn’t open.

It did the same thing as before, standing in the hallway, it pressed its eyes against the cat’s eye to look inside, and then began to frantically break through the door like it did before.

After not finding the person, it disappeared again.

This time, everyone finally breathed a sigh of relief. As long as this was done according to the plan, everyone could safely survive until rescue arrived.
