- I Do Science Popularization Live Streams in the Supernatural World
- Chapter 7 - Why Don't You Play by the Rules?
Accompanied by a dazzling display of special effects, the form of the Thousand Mechanisms Rod was upgraded in Wang Qi’s hands.
Its overall appearance hadn’t changed much, but a strange design had been added to the front of the rod. It looked like a red claw wrapped in black hair-like fur. A mechanism on the handle of the rod allowed control over the opening and closing of the claw.
Wang Qi played with it for a moment when a thought suddenly struck his mind. He took out his phone from his pocket and put it on the surface, just enough for the claw to grab it. He looked at it up and down.
“…”
Isn’t this just a damn selfie stick?!
What Thousand Mechanisms Rod? It’s just a fancy name to trick him!
As a streamer, Wang Qi was no stranger to selfie sticks. Before he started his first live, he specially bought one online for only 9.8 yuan, including shipping. It had roughly the same function as the one in his hand, except this one had an added atmospheric lights function.
Before the upgrade, I thought it was a pretty powerful thing, but after upgrading, it directly turned into a selfie stick. Even its quality immediately dropped several notches!
I knew this dog system was a scammer!
Wang Qi was indignant but quickly accepted it. It’s fine. At least by doing science popularization streams as required by the system, his income would now be pretty high. It was much better than when he was a delivery boy. Plus, being able to spread atheism and promote scientific values to the ignorant masses felt quite rewarding.
After comforting himself, Wang Qi put away the selfie stick. The system comes with a portable space, but it can only store reward items.
Another thought flashed through his mind, and he touched his pocket, only to find that the red cloth he picked up in the Hongqi Apartment was missing. I must have lost it on the way back.
Unbeknownst to him, after the ghost in red disintegrated, the red cloth harboring her resentment also disappeared.
Well, I only picked it up because it looked interesting, and I wanted to keep it as a souvenir. If it’s lost, it’s lost. Wang Qi didn’t dwell on it. He stretched and prepared to catch up on sleep.
Just as he was about to lie down on the bed, there was a knock on the door.
Wang Qi startled for a moment with its unexpectedness. The only people living in this small building were Wang Qi and the landlady and her son upstairs. There were no tenants on his floor.
He walked over and opened the door.
The person knocking was the landlady from upstairs. She was in her thirties, with slightly curly brown hair, a delicate face, and very pale skin. Standing in the darkness outside the door made her appear gloomy.
But Wang Qi didn’t pay attention to that.
The lady must have just gotten up since she was wearing a nightgown. The thin fabric perfectly outlined her figure, exuding a charm only mature women possess. Wang Qi couldn’t help but look twice.
“Xiao Qi, you’re off work so early today,” the landlady asked softly when the door opened.
In the past, Wang Qi worked the evening and night shifts. The price of delivering takeouts during the night was a little higher, so Wang Qi had always been more diligent during nights. He would always go out in the evening and come back to catch up on sleep in the morning. After moving here, he had only seen the landlady a few times.
“I recently changed jobs,” Wang Qi said with a smile. “Landlady, is there something you need?”
“Yes, I want to show you something…” A cold smile appeared on her pale face, and her voice sounded eerie.
She raised her right hand, revealing a kitchen knife. The blade reflected a cold light. For a moment, the indoor lighting cast mottled shadows on her face, making her smile unspeakably creepy.
But before she could do anything, Wang Qi casually took the knife and turned it over in his hand. “Is this the new kitchen knife you bought?”
“…”
The landlady stared blankly at the snatched knife, then at her own hand. What just happened? She couldn’t help but ask hesitantly, “Yes… I was making breakfast. Have you eaten yet?”
“Yeah, I already ate.” Wang Qi had bought a savory crepe from a street stall on his way home and had it for breakfast.
“Eat some more.” The landlady was quick to gather herself and moved closer, staring straight at Wang Qi. “I can make you something delicious.”
After saying that, she gently bit her lip, giving off an ambiguous atmosphere.
Wang Qi was quick to refuse. “Thank you, but I need to catch up on some sleep!” He returned the knife to the landlady and slammed the door shut with a loud bang.
So enthusiastic!
Although he had only met her a few times, every time he encountered the landlady, Wang Qi could feel her intense gaze. She always stared at him like he was a delicacy served in a Michelin restaurant. Like she couldn’t wait to pounce on him…
It’s obvious she had taken a fancy to him! Buying a kitchen knife for him to look at? She even came up with such a lame excuse!
He didn’t blame the landlady’s enthusiasm; after all, it’s a well-known fact that he’s handsome. However, he was still a young man, and while the landlady was certainly tempting, he didn’t want anything to happen between them just because of his personal desires.
“It’s all my fault for being too handsome.”
Wang Qi sighed, turned off the light, and lay down on the bed.
The landlady was still outside the door. Staring at the closed door, her body felt stiff. I finally waited for this boy to come before dawn…
Why aren’t you following the script?
She put the knife down in frustration. When she turned, her son had already appeared beside her. The little boy was frail, with abnormally pale skin. He was squatting on the ground, looking up pitifully with his big eyes. His pupils were so large that his eyes looked completely black.
The landlady sighed and looked out the window. The faint morning light was starting to stream in.
It looked like there was no chance today… She took the little boy’s hand and walked toward the nearby staircase.
Two figures, one big and one small, suddenly vanished.
They were obviously not human.
…
Inside an underground building in Qingling City.
This was the branch base of a secret agency called the Spirit Management Bureau.
Linlin, Old Chen, and Xiao Gao were all under the jurisdiction of the Bureau. After returning from the Hongqi Apartment, they came here to report the details of the incident to their superior.
“I didn’t expect the ghost in the Hongqi Apartment to be so powerful. It was a lapse in my intelligence gathering that put you all in danger,” said the trio’s superior, a bald, somewhat sickly-looking man, with a tone of shame after hearing their account.
“Boss, you don’t need to feel bad. We knew the risks when we took this job,” Old Chen comforted him. “Just don’t forget the bonus…”
Linlin quickly glared at Old Chen, stopping him from continuing. How embarrassing!
“I won’t forget. I’ll apply for a bonus as compensation.” Their boss didn’t seem to mind; instead, he smiled gently, then his expression became serious. “You met that streamer at the Hongqi Apartments. Is he really that skilled?”
“Absolutely!” Linlin confirmed with a nod. “That resentful spirit was easily played with in his hands. He even flew her like a kite…”
Their boss frowned. The Bureau’s duty was to protect social stability and shield ordinary citizens from harm caused by supernatural entities. This mysterious young man had never registered with the Bureau. He could pose a threat in the future.
A person with powerful spiritual energy could be a virtuous individual who drives away demons or a wicked one who commits evil acts. When a living person turns evil, they become more terrifying than a ghost.
“Boss, Brother Qi seems like a good person.” Xiao Gao said, sensing his superior’s worry. “Besides, he used science to debunk myths on his stream, which aligns with the Bureau’s goal.”
Supernatural forces do exist in this world, but the Bureau deals with the incidents and works hard to make the public believe it is a world without the supernatural, all for the sake of social stability. Wang Qi’s approach, while unconventional, was undoubtedly highly effective. After watching his stream, if Xiao Gao didn’t have spirit sight, even he would have believed there were no ghosts in the world.
“However, the footage from his live stream needs to be dealt with,” Xiao Gao added. Quite a number of people watched Wang Qi’s stream, and inevitably, some would record the video and upload it online.
Although it was a recorded video, people with spirit sight would still be able to see the ghost’s figure within it. The Bureau had a department specifically for handling such supernatural videos and images.
“I will arrange for someone to handle it.” The bald boss nodded. “But a person with a spiritual energy value of 3,000 can’t just be left unsupervised.”
“Brother Qi said in his stream that anyone who encounters a supernatural incident and wants him to debunk it can contact him,” Xiao Gao suggested. “We can arrange for him to perform exorcisms to test his character.”
“Excellent.” The boss took out a file. “Coincidentally, there is a newly reported incident. A ghost is haunting Horn Street, tailing women who pass by. You three figure out a way to arrange for that kid to do his stream there.”
“Okay, I’ll send a private message to his account right away. I’m already following him,” Old Chen immediately said, pulling out his phone.
“I will too.” Linlin also pulled out her phone.
Xiao Gao didn’t say anything, but he also took out his phone.
The boss couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow.
Are all three of you already his fans?
