Chapter 9: The Truth About the ‘Third Time’s the Charm’

◆ Rinne and Perseus, Rocky Area near Lorelei ◆

Given the circumstances, I must find a way for Aurelia to speak. Is it acceptable for such a labor-intensive creature to exist? No, it’s not. This time, without a doubt, I will evolve Aurelia into a class that enables her to communicate.

The undead evolution displayed, ‘Level is short by 14. Evolution required materials are as follows.’ So, I’m aware of the required materials. It was also necessary for Donta: ‘☆2 Magic Crystals, 10 pieces,’ and unfamiliar materials like ‘Large Crow Feathers, 50 pieces,’ and ‘Ghost Pumpkin, 1 piece.’ Since they had surplus amounts of these materials, I obtained permission to take them. Additionally, I stored the equipment I picked up along the way in the guild warehouse. I’ll gather more items and auction them off to contribute to the guild funds later.

“Perforate, Curse Spear.”

“Curse Spear activated, dealing 1 damage to Stone Armor Slime (Lv.34). It is now cursed.”

“Now, the curse takes effect, and…”

“As a result of the ongoing damage from the cursed state, Stone Armor Slime (Lv.34) has died. Experience gained: 3,900.”

“In roughly 5 seconds, it’s dead. The curse damage was around 10 per second, so the calculations don’t add up… Why is it defeated when it should have had 500 HP?”

Right now, I find myself relentlessly taking down those Stone Armor Slimes. Pure extermination. If Donta spots one, I unleash Curse Spear and wipe it out. No hesitations, just swift extermination. It’s a straightforward job – eliminating cursed creatures.

By the way, you can also defeat them using Negative Aura and spread curses around, but unless there are three or more clustered together, it’s not used much compared to Curse Spear since it costs a lot of MP. When I defeated ‘The Golden One,’ back then, I initially believed it was poison slip damage, but it seems there’s damage from the curse itself. I misunderstood because I associated damage from abnormal conditions with poison.

“Wauu?!”

“What? Donta, did you see something?”

“That was… that was! The Stone Armor King Slime! It’s the boss area around here!”

When Donta noticed he had discovered something, there was a creature over ten times larger than the Stone Armor Slime. It’s easily discernible as the rocks attached to the slime’s body sway when it moves. Despite the external rock armor covering the slime’s vulnerability, the interior remains soft and gooey. Attacking until the rocks are removed might seem like a viable strategy, but these rocks appear to be reinforced and much tougher than usual. Even large hammer-like striking weapons encounter solid resistance, bouncing off with only 1 damage.

“So, it’s the boss area for these creatures. Does that mean it’s an enhanced version?”

“Boss area?”

“Oh, speaking of boss areas…”

I thought I would ask just in case, and it turns out area bosses have quite interesting specifications.

* There is only one channel for them, that combines all channels.

* Once defeated, it does not respawn for a certain period, with some not appearing for up to a week.

* In line with its designation as a “boss area,” each region features a boss.

* When defeated, a boss reward treasure chest appears. Some players actively seek out area bosses for this reward.

* Some of them aren’t hunted?”

* Yes, that’s right. By the way, this one is an area boss that is left alone because there’s no way to defeat it.”

“I see. Perforate, Curse Spear!”

“Curse Spear activated, dealing 1 damage to Stone Armor King Slime (Lv.??). It is now cursed.”

For now, let’s just hit it once. Uh-oh, it’s surprisingly fast for its size. Ah, it’s catching up!

“D-Donta! Run around so it doesn’t catch us!”

“I attacked it without thinking! I have no idea how much HP it has!”

“Wauwauwauwauwauwauwauwau! (If it hits, it’s definitely going to hurt!!)”

“Gasp… (Panic)”
“The curse state has worn off from Stone Armor King Slime (Lv.??).”

“No way, it only lasts for about 10 seconds! Too short! Perforate, Curse Spear!”

“Curse Spear activated, causing 1 damage to Stone Armor King Slime (Lv.??). It is now cursed”

Mounted on Donta, the only choice is to circle around and occasionally launch Curse Spear. As long as we maintain this running strategy, it should be fine….

“…Aegis!!!”

‘Perseus (Lv.24) nullified the Stone Missile.’

“Phew… that was close!”

No, this won’t work. Our defense relies heavily on Pers-chan. Donta’s role is to avoid direct attacks, I’m the attacker, and Pers-chan is responsible for blocking magical attacks. If Aegis fails, we’re in trouble… Aurelia! Can’t you do something?! Anything at all!!!

“The curse state has worn off from Stone Armor King Slime (Lv.??).”

“Perforate, Curse Spear!”

“Curse Spear activated, causing 1 damage to Stone Armor King Slime (Lv.??). It is now cursed.”

“Donta, go right!”

“Donta, turn right!”

“Wauuuu?!”

Being pursued by such a massive, round boulder is not something I ever imagined happening in my life. Riding on a large wolf, evading the giant rock, dodging or nullifying the projectiles, and intermittently launching attacks with magic…What a pathetic scene this is.

“Donta, go left!”

“W-Wauuuu?!”

“That’s your right! Donta, the opposite way!!”

“To the side of the paw that asks for food, Donta!”

“It’s not that pawl!! Perforate, Curse Spear!!!”

“The one that asks for more food, Donta!!!”

“It can only offer a paw!!!”

“Ahhhh, bad dogggg!!!”

“It’s a wolf!!!!”

“Ahhhhhh, in fronttttt!!!”

“Fly, Dontaaaaa!!!”

… Perhaps we shouldn’t have gotten ourselves into this situation in the first place.

◆ ◆ ◆

“Stone Armor King Slime (Lv.55) has been defeated. Experience gained: 322,000.”

“Congratulations! You are the MVP! MVP reward: [☆3 Magic Crystal Box].”

“You’ve reached level 29! Congrats!”

“Perseus hit Level 29. Congrats!”

“Donta reached Level 20.”

“Aurelia hit Level 13.”

We did it… We did it… We did it… We did it… I really thought we couldn’t defeat it…

“I-I’m tired… Exhausted…”

“If I hadn’t seen the HP bar decreasing, I was considering giving up…”

“Whewww…”

“’Gasp… (Weakened)”

However, it was worth defeating it… We gained experience equivalent to defeating about 90 small fry monsters at once, and the level-up amount! We also got close to level 30, and it was satisfying to defeat it. It’s good… it’s really good.

“Oh… a treasure chest.”
“Let’s open it!”

“Wau…”

That’s right, when you beat a boss area, a treasure chest appears. I forgot that this was more of the main event. Let’s open it, let’s open it! I’m excited, I wonder what’s inside!

“All right. Open sesame!”

“Open sesa…?! Cu-cute, respec…nnngh! What’s inside?! What is it?!”

“…………kun (Not food, unfortunately)”

“A book, a book…”

“It might be a skill acquisition book! It’s an unidentified book…Ah!!! I forgot to identify my equipment!!!”

“Later, later. It’s okay, it’s okay.”

“I’m sorry…”

“Let’s let the one who might be able to use it try it out later.”

“Well, that’s okay!”

So, that book looks like a skill acquisition book, huh? Unidentified books are displayed as 【? Book】. Although you can open the book itself, the contents are entirely unreadable. Does identifying it magically turn this gibberish into readable text?… Hold on, did they invent all these fictional words just for this game? Seriously? That’s incredible… a true display of dedication…

“Gasp…! Gasp… (Depressed)”

“Aurelia is trying to express something!”

“But she can’t speak!”

“Ga…sp (Super depressed)”

“I apologize. Let’s quickly level up two more times.”

“I’m sorry too. Even though she’s a zombie, she seems somehow cute.”

“’Gaaasp…”
Aurelia reacted to the book, it seemed like she wanted to express something, but I forgot about her inability to speak, and she became visibly disheartened. She’s truly, deeply downhearted. Despite being a zombie with pale blue skin and a face so decayed that distinguishing features is a challenge, she radiates a unique charm. It’s unfair. Adorable zombies like her are a rare find.

“Well, let’s go back to mass hunting.”

“Yeah, that’s a good idea. This one won’t respawn for a while.”

“Donta, continue hunting. We’ll keep going until Aurelia reaches level 15.”

‘Wauu! (Got it! I’m hungry!)’

“Just hold on a little longer.”

“Oh, are you hungry? Then…”

“No, don’t. He needs to endure. After coming this far, we can’t let him associate it with getting food. We shouldn’t spoil him.”

“Is that so…?”

“Yes, it is.”

“Kuuu…”

Donta receives too much food and snacks from Pers-chan. He should endure a little. Besides, if he gets any bigger, he might not fit into the town anymore. Even now, he’s more than three times the size of that Great Pyrenees or Irish Wolfhound. It’s nice that he’s fluffy despite being so big, but he’s too large. When he stands up, he’s taller than me. Despite his size and weight, he moves quite nimbly, but if he collides with a player, it would be like a traffic accident. If he gets too excited, he might topple carriages or something?

‘Wau (I’m here)”

“Now you don’t seem excited at all… Perforate, Curse Spear.”

“Activated Curse Spear, dealing 1 damage to Stone Armor Slime (Lv.37). It is now cursed.”

“Donta, when we get back, Hage will make delicious food for you!”

“The bald guy, remember the one who said you look tasty? If you work hard, he’ll prepare food for you.”

“Waooooooon!!!! ♡♡♡”

Donta is such a straightforward guy. Maybe he’s from a race that eventually produces the leader of a giant wolf tribe. Folktales often depict important figures with both grand achievements and some embarrassing sides, so perhaps his ancestors had similar traits. Yeah, that’s the most probable explanation. Donta isn’t exceptionally foolish, I guess…

◆ ◆ ◆

“…Aurelia has reached Level 15. Evolution conditions have been met.”

Finally, Aurelia reached Level 15. Our experience point requirements appear to differ, and hitting Level 15 for Aurelia felt like a distant goal. Despite needing only two more levels, she had to gain around 200,000 experience points. With that, I’ve surpassed Level 30 and 31, reaching Level 32. Donta also reached Level 22.

“It took a long time, didn’t it?”

“This time, let’s be careful… Let’s make her someone who can talk.”

“Yeah…”

Now, let’s explore Aurelia’s evolution options.

First, there’s the [Maiden Witch]: Dark attribute, human form, medium size. The name “Maiden Witch,” isn’t it a bit bold? Essentially, Aurelia seems to be something along those lines. Her expertise lies in dark magic, which coincides with mine. While it’s fine for both of us to specialize in the same field, it could be problematic if she can’t communicate effectively with her underlings. Additionally, since I myself can summon up to four undead at a time, gathering an even larger number for battle could become impractical. In that case, let’s set this option aside for now.

Next, there’s the [Dragner Witch]: Undead attribute, dragon-human form, medium size. This option emerged due to the evolution involving dragon meat. It seems she can harness the power of dragon magic, and its strength is considerable. As she can use all attributes, it doesn’t appear to be a questionable profession at first glance.

Consider this carefully before choosing this evolution. To use magic, one must either read a magic book or create it themselves. In other words, understanding dragon language and the like is a prerequisite…

“By the way, do you have any knowledge of dragon language or anything related to dragons?”

“No…”

“I figured as much.”

“…”

The Dragner Witch looks like a trap profession. It’s definitely better to avoid this. She’s already a bit challenging to manage, and there’s a high likelihood that she’ll become even more difficult. If that occurs, we’ll be forced to retire her, and considering all the effort put into raising her, that would be disheartening. Therefore, this option is dismissed!

Finally, there’s the [Little Witch]: Dark attribute, demon form, small size. The explanation mentions her resurrection as an apprentice witch, starting her second life. The dragon attribute and zombie traits would be gone, but this option seems promising. The only difference from the Maiden Witch might be the size, transitioning from medium to small?

“Which sounds better for an introduction, referring to yourself as the Maiden Witch or as the Little Witch? Or is Maiden Witch preferable?”

“…”

“Alright, then, Little Witch.”

“Yes…”

Considering Aurelia’s preference, let’s go with the Little Witch! Seriously, using dragon meat just because we have some extra… I can’t believe it. Anyway, let’s see if she can talk this time…

“Alright, let’s give it a shot! Click.”

“I hope she can talk this time.”

“Aurelia (Level MAX) has evolved from Zombie Witch to [Little Witch, Aurelia (Lv.1)].”

“Dragon attribute has been removed, and [Fire Breath] has been lost.”

“Zombie traits have been lost, and Aurelia’s weakness to [Fire] has disappeared.”

“Several skills have been set.”

“Some stats have decreased.”

“Some stats have greatly increased.”

“Huh?! Some stats decreased?! Is this Aurelia’s unfortunate legend starting again?! Hold on, Aurelia! Let me see your stats!”

* Aurelia is always of the dark attribute.

* Aurelia is favored by the demon god Babylon.

* Aurelia worships the demon god Babylon.

* Aurelia is designated as a heretic by the Holy Church of Meltis.

* Aurelia can resurrect by sacrificing her familiar if it’s alive when she dies.

Is this for real? These low HP stats can’t be accurate. Without summoning her familiar, this girl would die… In other words, her stats seem to suggest an imminent death.

“Ah… ah… a…!!!”

Oh, Aurelia can speak! She’s able to talk!!! Making her capable of speech was the primary objective, even more crucial than her overall performance!

“Ua…aahhhhhh!!!”

“Hey, hey, don’t cry. There, there, there, there. It must have been tough not being able to talk, Aurelia.”

“…!!!!”

Come on, Pers-chan, instead of being frozen in surprise, help her stop crying! She’s crying so much! Why is she so… What?!!

“Eeeeeeeehhhhhhhhhh!!!”

Wait a second, Aurelia, seriously, what’s going on…?!

“She’s so cute…!!!”

“Look at her forehead pattern!!! It belongs to the royal family of Stellavelce, right…??!!”

“…Huh?”

She’s so cute, but it’s not because of that she’s surprised, right?! Wait, is this girl from the royal family?! Royalty?! Seriously?! This is…completely, a bombshell!!!
