Chapter 2: His Name is Donta

◆ The Art of Necromancy and The Art of Dark Magic – Reading Time for Rinne ◆

Since that encounter with the slime, there haven’t been any more attacks, and I managed to read through the recommendations for necromancy and dark magic without any trouble. Is this truly a popular online game? It seemed like nobody else was around, but let’s stay optimistic about not being disturbed.

So, summarizing the contents of the necromancy recommendation:

・Necromancy is a magical practice that involves creating undead beings from corpses, essentially generating animated corpse warriors.

・If the individual was powerful during their lifetime, they may retain that power.

・Additionally, if the individual was exceptionally powerful, it could pose a challenge for a weak practitioner to control them effectively.

・For those who worship Babylon and are necromancers blessed with the desire for death, creating undead is a straightforward process: simply touch a corpse and command, “Rise!”

・The success rate and control depend on the stats “Vitality” and “Mind.”

In other words, Babylon-chan is amazing. If I had commanded the slime I defeated earlier to rise, could I have summoned an undead warrior? A bit disappointing, but I’ll certainly try it next time I come across a slime. It should make the early stages smoother.

Now, onto dark magic, I pondered what the differences were and, after reading, condensed it to this:

・Dark magic is magic powered by negative energy, mainly exhibiting effects such as status abnormalities and interference.

・If the target is a negative existence, it can be empowered.

・Acquiring the fundamental offensive dark magic, “Curse Spear,” is advisable.

・To activate Curse Spear, use a catalyst associated with curses or death, and envision launching a spear from that catalyst.

・For those who worship Babylon and are necromancers blessed with the desire for death, launching Curse Spear is a straightforward task. Simply say the activation phrase, ‘Perforate’, and command, “Fire!”

・The power and success rate depend on the stats “Magic Power” and “Mind.”

“Babylon-chan, you’re incredible…”

With this, I shouldn’t have to display my world’s second-worst trashiness in a fierce battle against slimes. I’ll immediately go ahead and create an undead warrior with this. Well then, looking forward to our match.

◆ Rinne’s Battle for Death ◆

‘Perforate’, Curse Spear!!!”

…Where’s the slime?

“Gyauuu!!! Waaahhh!!!”

I was searching for a slime, but this… is definitely not a slime. No matter how you look at it, it’s fluffy and unbelievably fast. If I get hit by those front paws or those fangs, I’ll undoubtedly be done for in one shot. I’ll take it down before it takes me down. The instant that crossed my mind, I unleashed the Curse Spear.

“?Wolf (Lv.8) took 27 damage. Wolf (Lv.8) is now cursed.”

“Gaa…!”

This creature is a Wolf, and it appears to be at level 8. Eight times my level. An outrageous level difference. If it weren’t for Babylon-chan giving me this ring and the recommendations for magic, I would have definitely died without being able to do anything. Honestly, I’m anxious about whether I can defeat this Wolf.

“Perforate, Curse Spear!”

“Gyawn!”

“?Wolf (Lv.8) took 38 damage.”

My skill Curse Spear, thrusts up from the ground toward the enemy’s feet, is highly accurate and convenient. When this Wolf makes a big jump, if I leave it at its landing point, it’ll definitely hit. Given this early stage of the game, it’s unlikely to encounter many players capable of executing mid-air maneuvers, making this tactic potentially unstoppable due to lack of countermeasures.

Moreover, it seems that the damage is more effective when the target is cursed. The second hit had a greater impact than the first, causing its movements to become sluggish. Even the charging attack, which I thought was impossible to dodge at first, became slow enough to avoid to some extent.

“Perforate, Curse Spear!”

The Curse Spear can’t be launched until three seconds have passed since its initiation, but the activation word is brief, and the animation is short—it’s really easy to use. Come on, fall!

“?Wolf (Lv.8) took 44 damage.”

“☆1 Wolf (Lv.8) defeated. Experience gained: 155.”

“Advanced to Level 2! Congratulations!”

“Advanced to Level 3! Congratulations!”

“Obtained 【?Accessory (Other)】.”

Oh, I did it. I defeated it! My level went up too. I’ll check later… It should be safe to allocate points to MAG and MND.

Well, it was almost one-sided, but it had to be like this, or I would’ve lost. I only have 10 HP, so not even letting the Wolf land an attack is not my fault. Oh!

“Oh, right! Now I need to create an undead, um…?”

More importantly, let’s create an undead. Oh, I mentioned it later, but let’s allocate some points to increase the success rate! The activation word is just a simple “Rise!,” and an undead warrior is created. I wonder what kind of undead I’ll get. This is exciting…

“Rise!”

“…Wau!”

“…If the individual was powerful during their lifetime, they may retain that power. Are you like that?”

“Wau?”

“Oh, it is kind of silly… but maybe a little cute…”

Somehow, it just stood up as it was… Since it’s stronger than me, does that mean it retains its original form? Was it actually powerful in its life? This guy? Oh, could the “☆1” that appeared right after defeating it have something to do with this…?

“☆1 Wolf has become your follower. Please give it a name.”

“One Star? A name? Ok, a name…”

One star…? Is that a highly-rated Wolf? Oh, a name… Right, right, a name, huh? A name…

“Don-ta.”

“Wauuu?!”

“Alright, from today, you’re Donta. Nice to meet you, Donta.”

“Kyauuu…”

“What’s the problem?”

“I’m not good with names; I even had Babylon-chan decide my own name. What should I do… a name…”

“Kuuun…”

“Alright, Donta, let’s go slime hunting! Let’s find lots of them and hunt them down!”

“Wauuu…”

“What’s the problem? Come on, go!”

“Wauuuu!!”

Reluctantly, Donta ventured into the grasslands to search for slimes. He’s quite useful, considered part of the party, and I can somehow sense how far he has gone. Necromancy might prove to be convenient!

“Donta (Lv.8) defeated Slime (Lv.2). Experience gained: 3.”

“Donta (Lv.8) defeated Slime (Lv.3). Experience gained: 5.”

“Donta (Lv.8) defeated Slime (Lv.2). Experience gained: 3.”

…Isn’t he strong?
“Donta (Lv.8) defeated Wolf (Lv.6). Experience gained: 30.”

“Donta (Lv.8) defeated Slime (Lv.2). Experience gained: 3.”

“Donta (Lv.8) defeated Wolf (Lv.5). Experience gained: 25.”

…Isn’t he REALLY strong?!

“Reached Level 4! Congratulations!”

Eeeehhhhhh.

◆ Rinne, Conquering the Grasslands ◆

Donta was strong. Way stronger than I could have imagined. In this grassland, Donta was invincible, defeating everything in a single blow. And somehow, he doesn’t exude an undead vibe. He gives off a typical dog-like presence.

“You’re strong. Good, good, good boy…! You’re such a good boy!”

“Guuuuu… ♡”

Thanks to him, my level has increased to 6, and with the higher level, I was able to improve my stats. For now, my stats are as follows:

・Status

【Name】 Rinne

【Level】 6

【Gender】 Female

【Occupation】 Dark Mage 【Secret】 Necromancer

【HP】 88/88

【MP】 104/104

【STR】 4

【AGI】 4

【TEC】 4
【VIT】 4→8

【MAG】 4→12

【MND】 4→12

【Skills】

・Undead Creation【Special】

・Undead Enhancement【Special】

・Accessory [Arm]: None

・Accessory [Neck]: None

・Accessory [Other]: None

I allocated my stats with the minimum required value of 4. By the way, Donta has high STR, AGI, TEC, and even VIT. You can really feel the difference between humans and monsters.

“For now, let’s aim for that town.”

“Wauuu!”

So, with various items acquired, my inventory has grown, and there are unidentified items too. Let’s aim for that town in the distance. Babylon-chan also mentioned that I should head for the town.

Donta is technically an undead, but… like this, he just seems like a regular dog, right? Well, he’s like a big Shiba Inu or something. He can handle sunlight, so everything’s okay.

“Oh, by the way, I don’t have any money, but I guess it’s okay…”

“Wafuu…”

I doubt this is a game that forces you to start as a penniless beggar. Well, let’s go… Ah, when I get to the town, I need to contact Mayumi.

“Wau wau!”

When I arrive in town, I’ll contact Mayumi, the person who introduced me to this game. She said to contact her when I log in. Mayumi, Mayumi… She’s not a bad person, but her sparkling aura of a rich girl is just the opposite of me. Why does she even bother being with someone like me, who’s gloomy and doesn’t fit into that glamorous world? It would be better if she spent time with someone more dazzling. I wonder why she likes me.

“Kyuppii!”

“Huh?”

“Wuuh?”

“Kyuu…!”

Honestly, the slimes in this world are nothing but a nuisance to me… Do they want Curse Spear that much? Come on… I’m trying to think about something right now!
“Perforate.”

“Waauuuuu!!”

“Donta (Lv.9) defeated Slime (Lv.3). Experience gained: 5.”

“…Fast, isn’t he?”

“Wafuu…”

Donta, you’re noticeably faster than when we fought. Naming you Donta because you seemed slow might have been a mistake…? He’s the kind of guy who would completely overpower someone like me (Lv.1), so yeah, Donta suits him well.

“Good boy, good boy. Alright, Donta? Clear out any monsters that might be on the way to the town.”

“Waff!!”

“He’s surprisingly expressive for a wolf… I mean, don’t real wolves lack facial muscles? Mixing up the game and reality isn’t a good idea, right? No, it’s not. Wolves in this world, however, are expressive with rich vocalizations. That’s cuter and better. Oh, he went quite far… Is he okay?”

“Donta (Lv.9) defeated Melianne (Lv.11). Experience gained: 310.”

“You obtained 【Magician’s Staff (Fine)】.”

Uh… Uh-oh. Donta, aren’t you too strong? Did you just defeat a player…?!

Uh, uh, uh… Uh-oh…
