Chapter 15: Ocean Abyss Dungeon Part 1
◆ Rinne and Perseus – Ocean Abyss Dungeon ◆
The Ocean Abyss Dungeon. If you head east of Lorelei’s port, you’ll come across a sudden small mountain and proceeding around the mountain will lead you to a cave. There existed the Ocean Abyss Dungeon which was its actual official name by the way. Honestly, if I didn’t have Pers-chan here to guide me, there was no way I’d ever find the path. It was just that hard to navigate to.
[Ocean Abyss Dungeon] (Recommended Level 40)
・Maximum number of members in party: 8
・Penalty: Fire damage nullification
・Challengeable once a day. (Resets at 5:59 everyday)
・All party members are expected to enter the portal and standby.
・After a 30 second countdown, the members inside the portal are then transported to the dungeon.
Other details listed in the information above are as follows. Fire damage being disabled actually overlapped with the penalty from Aurelia-chan’s broom so it wasn’t anything substantial which meant I could probably just ignore that. The recommended level was certainly a bit on the higher sign but according to Pers-chan, it’s merely a suggestion so we should be fine..
“Party leader’s request has been accepted… Starting teleportation countdown”
“With this, now we can enter the dungeon!”
“Yaaay! Still, all things considered, I’d normally just regard this place as your usual cave with a dead-end…”
“I heard they realized it through some writing that was on the ground. I’m surprised they can even tell considering how dark it is in here…”
“Maybe they had a night vision skill or something.”
“… Certainly, that does sound possible.”
“Counting down, 5… 4…”
Ah!! It’s starting! This kind of stuff somewhat gets me psyched…
“1… 0. Teleporting”
“Entering Ocean Abyss Dungeon”
“Penalty: Fire damage nullification has been activated”
Uwah, I’m getting drawn into the magic circle on the ground…!! So this is what ‘warping’ is like. It’s similar to the floaty feeling you get when you take an elevator all the way down to the bottom floor. We were transported to the dungeon within an instant. Uwah, uwaaaaaaa…!
“It’s so pretty…!”
“Right? It’s like we’re taking a stroll through the sea! It’s super gorgeous!”
“Wooof…!? (Drowning? Not drowning? It doesn’t hurt?)”
“Whmm…! H-Huh? I can still breathe…?”
The sea! It’s such a beautiful seabed! Even though we’re underwater, it’s not excruciating and we were able to talk… we could actually breathe! How mysterious! How strange! How fantasy-like…! An underwater stroll!!! Is this really the inside of a dungeon? It’s so majestically picturesque!
“Ah, here they come!”
Hm, they’re here? Who are you talking abou…Oh, the monsters in the dungeon obviously! Of course!
“Shaaaaah…!!”
“We’re getting surrounded by monsters in every direction! Hyper Slash!!!”
“Perseus (Level 32) used [Hyper Slash] and dealt 873 damage, defeating Charge, Moray-san! (LV. 45). 7840 EXP obtained.”
It got here quick, really quick but what was that name? What the heck is a ”Charge, Moray-san!”!? Is it possible that you also get the right to name the monsters too!?
“Come forth, Luna!”
“Aurelia (Level 1) has activated Summon Familiar [Black Cat] . [Luna, The Black Cat] has been summoned”
“Nyaa”
“Luna, we can’t use fire so attack with either Icebolt or Thunderbolt, okay?”
“Nnyaaaa”
Hng!!! I forgot she could summon a black cat!!! It’s adorable, oh lord, it’s golden eyes are fluttering… I could stare at it forever… Hmm? it doesn’t count as a party member? Is it just treated as Aurelia-chan’s skill then? If it registered as a party member we would’ve gotten more experience. That’s too bad.
“…Gaaah”
“Graaah!! (Big fishy!)”
“Donta, that’s a shark! Don’t let it bite you!”
“Donta (LV. 22) used [Two-Stage Palm] and dealt 339, 411 damage to Super Tough Shark-san (Level 50)”
Alright, they definitely got to name these monsters! This Super Tough Shark-san really was tough though! Isn’t this the first time a monster has endured a Two-Stage Palm from Donta that wasn’t a 1 damage hit!? It flinched but wasn’t giving up and was picking up speed to rush us again!
“Rage, my fangs of ice, gather forth to form a mass of ice, burst and splinter! Blizzard Cracker…!!!”
“Aurelia (Level 1) has casted Blizzard Cracker with Perfect Chanting”
Aurelia-chan, what was that cool chant with crazy chuunibyou vibes you just did!? Hang on, onee-chan didn’t get a good look! Do it again later! Let me see it one more time! It was so cool seeing all those magic circles appear!! More importantly, what kind of magic was Blizzard Cracker anywa…
… (Craaaaaash!!!)
“Weak!!! Super Tough Shark-san (LV. 50) has taken 2994 damage and died. 8770 EXP obtained”
“Weak!!! Wandering Octopus-san (LV. 48) has taken 2789 damage and died. 7910 EXP obtained”
“Weak!!! Charge, Moray-san! (LV. 51) has taken 2669 damage and died. 8880 EXP obtained”
“You’ve reached level 33! Congratulations”
“Perseus has reached level 33! Congratulations!”
“Dontaro has reached level 23”
“Aurelia has reached level 2”
“Aurelia has reached level 3……”
An incredibly loud explosion deafened my hearing and simultaneously, the mass of ice split off into sharp fragments, launching in all directions. What about its attack power? It was insane. All the surrounding monsters that got caught in the attack were wiped out. Rather, these guys were weak to ice even though they’re supposed to be aquatic monsters…?
“Aurelia has reached level 7”
“I-I did it!”
“Good job, Aurelia-chan! You’re so strong!”
“Ehheheh…”
At any rate, Aurelia-chan did good. I’ll give her some pats. Pat pat… Sorry it has to be over the witch hat. It’d be dangerous to take off equipment while we’re in a dungeon…
“I see, if you tap on the damage analysis tab, you’ll get the full picture. Not only does it do ice damage but it also does piercing damage, which hits them in their weak points.”
“Pierce damage?”
“Attacks have their own type of attributes attached to them. Swords and the like have the slash attribute, spears and stuff are coupled with the pierce attribute, while heavy weapons utilize the blunt attribute. In other words, the three types of physical attacks are slash, pierce, and blunt. The monsters here are weak against pierce damage. We never found out about it until now since the members that usually come here all had slash or blunt damage.”
“That makes sense. I assume Donta’s Two-Stage Palm would be a blunt attack. Ah, my Curse Spear might do piercing damage then.”
“Certainly, it could serve as their weakness!”
Wowie! As I thought, this game was pretty deep. In addition to vulnerabilities to different elements such as fire and water, there were weaknesses to slash, pierce, and blunt damage too. Which means, Aurelia-chan’s Blizzard Cracker was a magic that combined water and pierce damage. My Curse Spear literally had ‘spear’ in the spell’s name so it’s possible that it did pierce damage as well.
“Graaah!! (There’s one below us!)”
“Weak!!! Donta (LV. 22) used [Two-Stage Palm] and dealt 629, 711 damage to Drill Turban Shell (LV. 42), defeating it. 7220 EXP obtained.”
… I really don’t understand why that skill, [Two-Stage Palm] has such an exaggerated name when it’s just Donta tapping things with his paws. Also, there were enemies that were weak to blunt attacks here too. Also, he took it down with just that… A monster losing to Donta’s mere paw pats. How pitiful.
“If we keep this up, we should be able to find the portal that leads to the second floor.”
We’re encountering monsters at a pretty fast rate but should we be progressing at this pace? Although we were moving along without any damage taken on our end, the monsters keep coming from all directions and there’s a high chance they’ll catch us off guar…ugho!?
“Piigi!”
“Extremely Weak Seashell Slime (LV. 42) used [Jet Tackle] and dealt 398 damage to you”
“Ugho…?”
Extremely Weak Seashell Slime…! Again and again with these slimes!!! On top of that, I got hit by one that literally has “Extremely Weak” in its name! The first instance of damage I take in this dungeon is from this weakling!? Ngh, gaaaaaah!!!!
“Unforgivable…! Perforate, Curse Spear!!!!!”
“You dealt 188 damage to Extremely Weak Seashell Slime (LV. 42), inflicting it with Curse”
“Grr, graaaaaw!!!”
“Weak!!! Donta (LV. 22) used [Two-Stage Palm] and dealt 629, 711 damage to Weak AF Seashell Slime (LV. 42), defeating it. 7220 EXP obtained.”
… I couldn’t even kill it myself. I wasn’t able to finish off this weakling in one hit. Oh god, I’m complete deadweight, aren’t I…? People are gonna begin referring to me as Donta and Aurelia-chan’s groupie. They’ll start calling me the actual weakling… oh no… Umm…? Even if I targeted its weakness, I didn’t have a good source of damage! The only thing I’m effective against are niche tanky opponents that usually only take 1 damage!
“They’ll sometimes attack at your feet, so keep a look out…!”
“Yes. I have been attacked.”
“… Kyuun”
“A-Are you okay, Rinne-oneechan…?”
“I’m not mentally okay, but i’m fine… it’s fine…”
Damn slimes… If I had a certain scroll from a certain game, you guys would be my number one candidate for extermination. The existence of these slimes are a danger to my mental health. I’ve gotta commit genocide…
“In any case, that was a quick tackle… Donta, tackling is supposed to be done with that much force.”
“Woof!! (Got it!)
However, we could learn something from it. That jet-like propulsion tackle had a sense of sharpness behind it and I’d like for Donta to learn a thing or two from that. I wanted Donta to familiarize himself with attacks that weren’t exclusive to just biting or slapping things with his paws.
“Woof!! Graaaauhh…!!! Gaaaaawwwh!!!”
“Ooh, there he goes.”
“That’s the same shark we couldn’t finish off earlier.”
“I-Is he going to be alright? Luna, if Donta-san gets into a pinch, back him up with Thunderbolt!”
“Nyaaa”
And off he goes. Donta immediately went out to initiate a ramming attack. In addition, it was the tough shark that we didn’t defeat a while back… Now, what will you do, Donta!
“Donta used [Headlong Rush] and dealt 522 damage to Super Tough Shark-san (LV. 50), inflicting it with Stun”
“2 COMBO!! Donta (LV. 22) used [Two-Stage Palm] and dealt 428, 455 damage to Super Tough Shark-san (LV. 50)”
“3 COMBO!! Donta (LV. 22) used [Chomp] and dealt 690 damage to Super Tough Shark-san (LV. 50), defeating it. 8770 EXP obtained”
Oooh. Combo? Well, putting that aside, those were really clean movements you defeated it with, Donta. He stunned it and gave it no time to retaliate. That was good.
“My, that Combo Attack is a passive skill that martial arts classes usually have. I wonder if Donta is getting accustomed to martial arts and the like.”
“Heeh. So Donta’s been gradually getting stronger when we weren’t looking.”
“Woooof ♡ (I beat it! Praise me, praise me!)”
“Good boy, who’s a good boy…”
Good boy Donta, you did great. I’ll give you the praise you want… hm?
“Ah! Kyaaaah…!?!?”
“Extremely Weak Seashell Slime (LV. 42) used [Jet Tackle] and dealt 412 damage to Aurelia (LV. 7)”
“Luna, The Black Cat (LV. 42) used [Thunderbolt] and dealt 590 damage to Extremely Weak Seashell Slime (LV. 42), defeating it. 7600 EXP obtained”
“Aurelia has reached Level 8”
“Aurelia (LV .8) has died”
“Luna, The Black Cat has been sacrificed”
“Aurelia (LV. 8) has been revived”
Ah… Aurelia-chan’s precious life…! Come to think of it, her HP was paper-thin! She was saved thanks to the cat’s sacrifice but the cat itself had melted into goop and disappeared…Ugogogoh…
“A-Are you okay!? Well I guess not since you died!”
“S-Sorry, I let my guard down… Batton!
“Aurelia (LV. 8) has activated Summon Familiar [Bat] . Familiar, Batton has been summoned”
“Batton can only really be used as a sacrifice so it won’t be of much use… awuu…”
“Donta, be sure to protect Aurelia-chan…”
“Kyuuun…”
“Oh dear, it is good that you get to survive thanks to its sacrifice though… Which reminds me, my Princess Points recover over time but how do you regain your Witch Points, Aurelia-chan?
“It seems to be the same and based on time. I recover one every three minutes!”
“3 minutes is quite a while… Let’s stay cautious as we progress!”
“I-Indeed.”
Aurelia-chan recovers 1 WP, or Witch Points every 3 minutes. With what she’s recovered, she’d be able to summon the black cat again in another 3 minutes. Apparently, she could only have one familiar summoned at a time and they could only be summoned after the other dies. On a related note, familiars also had HP so it’s possible for them to get done normally. It seems pretty difficult to manage…
“… By the way, Rinne-san? What happens when Don-chan or Aurelia-chan dies?”
“Ah.”
Eh? Don’t tell me you never accounted for that?”
“That’s definitely not the case…Of course, I have… I swear…”
“You haven’t confirmed anything, have you!?”
… Now that she’s mentioned it, it’s on my mind. What would happen if Donta or Aurelia-chan died? How do I bring them back? I never bothered to find out… Which reminds me, I haven’t checked on my skills in a while. Last time I looked, I only had Undead Creation and Undead Enhancement though… There’s more!!
“A skill called [Morgue] got added… Upon casting this skill, a coffin appears allowing you to store up to five dead bodies in it… Seemingly, if Donta dies, he’ll automatically be collected into this.”
“I see… Is there something you can use to revive him?”
“Apparently, I can with [Reanimation Ritual] ! Though it consumes all my NP and has a cooldown of 10 minutes at most… It also says if I want to revive something instantly, I have to use up magic crystals with matching rarities.”
“Magic crystals! The higher the rarity, the more expensive it is since it’s usually necessary in enhancing equipment… but it’s good news that you can revive them!”
“Yeah, what a relief…”
I got [Morgue] and [Reanimation Ritual] added to my list of necromancy skills! Morgue currently had two slots reserved for Donta and Aurelia-chan but the other three slots were empty. It might be nice to use it to collect corpses for Animate・Fetish too!
The Reanimation Ritual allows you to resurrect your employed undead if you use all your NP. However, since it consumed 5 NP and it took 2 minutes for me to restore 1 NP, the process would take 10 minutes. Any magic crystal you use up will alleviate the NP cost so if I broke down 5 of magic crystals, I could revive them instantly.
Both Donta and Aurelia-chan seem to require ☆3 Magic Crystals and incidentally, the reward I got from the chest after defeating the area boss before gave me ☆3 Magic Crystals x11. Which meant I could more or less revive them back to back twice but since these magic crystals were required in equipment enhancement, I didn’t really wanna use them up…
“…That’s reassuring. Also, Hyper Slash!!!”
“Wha!?”
“Perseus used [Hyper Slash] and dealt 999 damage, defeating Wandering Octopus-san (LV. 49). 8420 EXP obtained.”
“Those octopuses are a real pain since they’ll flutter around and about, trying to blind you!”
“I’ll be on my toes then…”
“I’ll be on the lookout!”
“Woof woof woof!”
“… I can’t help but give tension every time Don-chan responds like that.”
“Woof!?”
At any rate, our grounds for concern were cleared up. Let’s keep progressing at this pace. Donta and Pers-chan were the ones charging ahead. I keep watch over the situation and Aurelia-chan holds onto her precious life. Essentially, you could only enter the dungeon once a day so let’s be meticulous about this challenge…
◆ ◆ ◆
… (Craaaaaash!!!)
“Weak!!! Macho MAX Penguin (LV. 55) has taken 2455 damage and died. 10500 EXP obtained”
“Weak!!! Wandering Octopus-san (LV. 48) has taken 2720 damage and died. 7910 EXP obtained”
“Weak!!! Charge, Moray-san! (LV. 51) has taken 2739 damage and died. 8880 EXP obtained”
“Weak!!! Super Tough Shark-san (LV. 50) has taken 2955 damage and died. 8770 EXP obtained”
“Weak!!! Wandering Octopus-san (LV. 48) has taken 2721 damage and died. 7910 EXP obtained”
“Weak!!! Charge, Moray-san! (LV. 51) has taken 2991 damage and died. 8880 EXP obtained”
“You have reached Level 42. Congratulations!”
“Perseus has reached Level 42. Congratulations!”
“Donta has reached Level 29”
“Aurelia has reached Level 20”
No matter how many times I witness Aurelia-chan’s [Blizzard Cracker] , It always looks so sick. A cute loli witch girl like Aurelia-chan performing a cool chant is making my brain bug out. What a wonderful scene it was.
By the way, the reason why Aurelia-chan’s attack power was so high seemed to be because of the way Aurelia-chan’s skills bounced off of each other, her weapon’s effects, and attribute weaknesses.
First, because of the effect from [Enhanced Perfect Chanting] , if Aurelia-chan attaches more words in the form of a chant in addition to the activation word for the magic, its strength will increase by a maximum of 1.5x. Furthermore, attacking something with an attribute that it’s weak to adds in 2.0x and finally, her weapon’s effect gave her another 1.3x. So her magic is allegedly slamming into enemies with an additional sum of a 3.9x multiplier. Even then, that meant its original power stood around 1,000 damage and that’s scary in itself. If I got directly hit by that, I’d be on the brink of death.
“…Calamity Wave!!!”
“Perseus (LV. 42) used [Calamity Wave] ”
“Nearby monsters have been inflicted with [Fear] [Paralysis] [Confusion] ”
“Rage, my fangs of ice, gather forth to form a mass of ice, burst and splinter! Blizzard Cracker…!!!”
“…Damage Log has been set to Compact mode”
“Several monsters have been defeated”
“86720 EXP obtained”
“Aurelia has reached Level 21”
Moreover, Pers-chan acquired a new skill called Calamity Wave. She expelled a dark radial aura and anything caught in that wave would be hit with [Fear] , [Paralysis] , [Confusion] , and [Instant Death] . Although the success rate of instant death was lower against stronger enemies, the chances for the other status effects were quite high. After she halted their movements with this, Aurelia-chan destroys them with Blizzard Cracker. This combo was extremely strong.
My role? I put up [Bone Shield] to protect Aurelia-chan from dying. Just before an attack hits, I bring out a shield made of bones that was able to guard against a single attack. It looked incredibly sinister so I normally don’t like using it but it’s not like there was anyone here that would cause me trouble even if they saw it so I thought I’d might as well use it. It sure is easy to use though.
By the way, this was able to protect multiple people… so obviously, I guarded everyone. I even had it over Pers-chan who was under the effect of Aegis, which means I added another plus 1 to Pers-chan’s penetrate value (the number of times attacks are nullified before it lands). Holy moly…
“Donta, that one’s still alive”
“Gwraaagaah!!!”
“Donta used [Headlong Rush] on Charge! Moray-san! and destroyed it. 9110 EXP obtained“
“Piece of cake! I thought it’d be good enough if we could just make it to the 3rd floor, but we’re progressing through it pretty smoothly!”
“I’ve gotten used to all the various monsters coming from each direction too!”
Aurelia-chan not instantly dying was especially huge. It gave us a lot more leeway, allowing us to speed up our progress. I’d love to keep this pace up and aim for the 4th floor!
“… What is that?”
“T-That’s…!!!”
Hm? Before we got to the floor 4 portal, there was some kind of squid that had a sparkling effect emitting from it but what is that thing?
“It’s a rare monster!!!”
“Rare! Monster!!!”
A rare monster! That’s a rare monster! The glittery effect around it means it’s a rare monster, is that right, Pers-chan!? Now we’ve gotta take that thing down, we absolutely have to defeat it!!!
[Ocean Abyss Dungeon]
Although the dungeon was loosely named, it was actually much more difficult than what the required level suggested.
In this dungeon, all the floors are made up of [Extra Large Rooms] that act like monster houses. If you stay in one spot for too long, you’ll be overwhelmed by monsters.
The dungeon is mainly composed of aquatic type monsters and even though the monster’s names are flippant, they pack a punch.
The portal is easy to spot since it sparkles when you get close to it but if you get stuck, it’s quite hard to find. The room was vast and it seemed as if you could continue to walk atop the seabed forever, but there was an invisible wall along the border. It would be detrimental if you got cornered here so it’s best to not approach the edge of the dungeon.
Storyteller Amarylais's Words
I'm in the process of creating a new, more organized glossary for this novel. The current one has grown so large that it's become painful to navigate. I'll be revising older chapters as necessary to ensure consistency.
