Chapter 13: Diving from the Ordinary into the Extraordinary

◆ Private school, Rokumeikan [Class 1-1] ◆

Mayumi: “Say, ahnn!”

Amane: “Ahn…nhn… dis ish ehmbarshing.”

Mayumi: “You shouldn’t talk with your mouth full.”

Amane: “…! This is really embarrassing… though…”

Mayumi: “This is so everyone knows that you’re mine, Acchan. You have no reason to feel embarrassed over it.”

Amane: “Uuu!…”

These two were the celebrities of Rokumeikan, class 1-1… actually, they were probably famous throughout the entire school itself. The duo of an ojou-sama with radiant blonde hair and another ojou-sama who had a gloomy overcast to her nature. It was the Nanase Corporation’s heiress, Mayumi Nanase and the girl that she doted on, Amane Rindo.

Whenever their classmates would ask them how long they’ve known each other, the both of them would seemingly default to their first year of junior high. Above all else, whenever Mayumi Nanase would come to school, they would cling together the entire time. This was a relationship that went beyond just being close.

Everyone at least knew that their friendship all began during their junior high skiing trip but when it came to the details, everyone had conflicting accounts of the story. No one could tell which one of the stories were true but the one absolute lie had to have been, “Amane Rindo found Mayumi Nanase who had encountered a disaster and Amane Rindo protected Mayumi Nanase within the blizzard until rescue came.” This was just too unrealistic.

Mayumi: “So, where do you want to go today?”

Amane: “…The dorms?”

Whatever the case, when Amane Rindo enrolled into the school, she became a target for a bullying group who decided that she was a parasite leeching off of Mayumi Nanase. However, we had only realized that their relationship was the exact opposite when we saw the reaction Mayumi Nanase had to a completely drenched Amane Rindo returning from the restroom. At that time, she looked at us as if we were maggots.

Mayumi Nanase pried the situation out of Amane Rindo and squeezed the information out of us as well about how she was bullied whenever Mayumi Nanase wasn’t around to see. Immediately, she got on the phone with someone and they arrived along with more of them showing up in cars… It was the police. They then conducted an investigation throughout the school and the ones that had bullied Amane Rindo were taken into custody. After some rigorous interrogation, they all plead guilty to their charges… and thus, six students were expelled, one month into the new semester.

What happened after that? Obviously, there was no longer anyone who dared raise a hand towards Amane Rindo. No one even dared to think about it. Furthermore, Mayumi Nanase’s relentless doting on Amane Rindo instinctively told us that Amane Rindo belonged solely to Mayumi Nanase.

Mayumi: “I meant Melt- uhh! the other side, I was talking about the other side…!”

Amane: “Oh, there… I’m not sure…”

Mayumi: “I do want to progress as far as we can but right now, I also want to aim for 45.”

Amane “I wonder if we’ll make it to 45…”

What was this conversation? I can’t tell whether I even wanted to know or not… Depending on how you interpret their talk, it could’ve been private matters but also not at all. What on earth is this ‘other side’?

Mayumi: “I hope we do… Also, do you think that girl was telling the truth about her story?”

Amane: “That girl? Oh… I did think it sounded a bit suspicious, I guess.”

Mayumi: “Exactly! Like with that spot being her last… the story seems kind of incoherent and muddled.”

Amane: “Hnn… but well, I think we should just do it… Regardless of whether it’s true or not and whether it’ll turn out to be a profit or not, the most important thing, at least for me, is whether or not it’s fun, hohoho…”

Mayumi: “You’re right! We can think about it after we do it!”

Do first, think later…? W-What could they be talking about…? Damn, I wanna fraternize with them too… That day, if I didn’t turn a blind eye towards the bullying and intervened to help out, I’d surely find myself there between those two beauties… shit, god damn it. Those two beauties, those two angelic beauties are right here, in this classroom, and yet…!

Mayumi: “… Hey you. I’ve been listening to you whispering and mumbling to yourself for a while now. You know we can hear you, right?”

Amane: “Just now, he said we were like angels… I hate it… so revolting…”

Mayumi: “Shall we move locations? Oh, the courtyard would be nice!”

H-Hate..! Revolting…! It was only yesterday that another passing beauty also hurt me with her words… That huge wolf also took my shield and everyone’s equipment got taken as well so they were pretty down in the dumps… Life is tough, too cruel…

???: “What’s up creepster Jouji? About our equipment, apparently the bulletin board said there was a guild that lends out rental equipment. Something called Dreamscape Utopia?”

Jouji: “Eh, really?”

???: Hey, are you still depressed about that pretty lady calling you creepy yesterday? Isn’t that way too creepy in itself?”

???: “She was that attractive, huh. I seemingly got killed by that so-called beauty’s pet doggy twice though?”

???: “Ah, we were just talking about that. It looks like they let you rent stuff here.”

???: “Heeh. Ah, Dreamscape Utopia was supposedly a dangerous guild! They control Lorelei and often kill players!”

???: “I wonder if it’s safe to borrow from a guild like them”

Jouji: “I mean, it’s better than having nothing. If anything it sounds like they’ll let you pay them back later so in the worst case scenario we could just run off…”

???: “You are just the worst.”

???: “Now that’s awful.”

???: “I’d rather not since it’ll affect my karma value!”

Jouji: W-Well, I’m talking about the worst case scenario… I’ll pay, I’ll pay, alright?”

Sigh… Dreamscape Utopia is apparently trouble though. Is this really gonna be okay…?

◆ On the way back home ◆

Amane: “Ah, Look Mayumi…! It says the crepe shop is opening next week.”

Mayumi: “Oh my, crepes, huh… I’ve never had them before.”

Amane: “Eh!? Are you being serious!? Oh, but wait, crepes… what did they taste like again… umm…”

Mayumi: “Nn! Behold, this poster! A delicious-looking strawberry crepe!”

Amane: “… You’re right, that does look yummy. You wanna come try it when it opens next week?”

Mayumi: “Sure, let’s eat them next time. That being said, the art on this poster… is pretty cute.”

It’s been over 2 months since we started high school and the environment around me took a drastic change in June.

I was no longer getting bullied… or rather, the people that bullied me were expelled from school. No one talked to me any more than what was necessary. My classmates were more like strangers and I wasn’t good at conversing with people I didn’t know, which is why I kept speaking with only Mayumi.

The work that Mayumi had eased up allowed her to be able to come to school all the time now and if she really had to deal with something, she would do it remotely. Other than that, she spent the rest of her time, leisurely relaxing to her heart’s content like we were doing now. I was just glad she could spend her time in high school to the fullest. I wanted to make lots of memories with Mayumi.

Amane: “The poster art…? Ah… that reminds me, my drawing tablet broke.”

Mayumi: “It broke…? You didn’t break it, did you?”

Amane: “I think the screen cracked when I moved.”

Mayumi: “… Oh, is that right. Interesting. “

Ah, she’s mad. Her expression and tone made it very clear that she was upset.

Amane: “I-I-It’s okay, drawing on paper isn’t too bad once in a while….”

“I’ll get you the same tablet again. It’ll probably be delivered tomorrow.”

Amane: “Y-You don’t have to, it’s fine, really! It feels wrong to have you buy things for me all the time…”

Mayumi: “I’m the one who arranged the move anyways. It was my fault for employing such incompetent people, no? I’m not specifically buying it again for you, it’s a reimbursement.”

Amane: “Aau… ghn… thank you…”

Mayumi: “No worries. If anything, I’m sorry you had to put up with that. Is there anything else that’s broken?”

Mayumi’s really scary when she gets mad. I wanted to see her spend her days smiling instead of being angry though. She wasn’t upset at me but… whenever Mayumi gets heated, you just know a storm was brewing.

Amane: “No, nothing really.”

Mayumi: “Really? Are you sure you’re sure? You’re not lying or anything?”

Amane: “I’m sure I’m sure!”

Mayumi: “…Looks like you’re telling the truth”

Every month, I was getting 20,000 yen from them as allowance but… how much money does Mayumi even have at her disposal? Actually, I’m better off not knowing. That’s something I’m sure of! I get the feeling that it was definitely an unbelievable amount of money considering she’s already spent over a million yen on Meltis. Her funds have to be crazy… I don’t ever wanna know and let’s keep it that way.

It was a 10 minute walk from the school. Mayumi told me it was a dorm but this was more like a condominium that happened to be next to the school and my room was on the highest floor, the 8th floor. Incidentally, the rest of the floors were filled with people who worked for the Nanase Corporation… Is it really okay for me to be here…?

“I’m… home”

No matter how many times I announce my presence, I never receive a response in return. Naturally, a tranquil home awaits me. I took off my shoes and threw my uniform into a washing machine that I don’t really understand the workings of. All I had to do was hit the switch and I’d be able to go to school tomorrow with a fresh uniform. Mayumi scolded me, saying that I should wash my… underwear and all that instead of letting it pile up over time. I’ll wash them… um, where was that detergent… alright, this should be good enough.

“Bath time! ♡”

And so I’m in the bath… Everyday, the housekeeper cleans up and heats up the bath around this time so I could hop in already prepared bath. Fwaaaaah…

“(Wait… I haven’t done a single thing by myself, have I…?”

Am I really okay with how things are? I wonder if I’ll be able to make it in society like this because I’m kind of feeling like I’d definitely be in trouble…

But that’s all irrelevant since this bath is just bliss. Let’s contemplate about all that some other time… I’ll reflect on it next time… Baths are so good… so warm…

I finished my meal and had everything prepared for tomorrow. Eh? Where did the food come from? I just had to heat up the meals that were delivered to me at the set time everyday. It also came with dessert by the way. I seriously have yet to do anything on my own. This has to be bad… But if I wanted to feed myself, I’d have to learn how to cook first… uuuuUUUuuu… Meltis!!! If possible, today’s objective is to reach level 45! According to Mayumi, there was supposedly a dungeon to the east edge of Lorei’s harbor. She said the recommended level was a bit high but perfect for farming so we talked about heading over there to level.
