Shen Lian had initially believed that as long as he answered flawlessly, Wang Yanglie wouldn’t be able to pin anything on him, and he’d be temporarily safe.

But reality proved different.

Not getting the answers he wanted, Wang Yanglie had resorted to violence, aiming to kill Shen Lian in a fit of rage.

This was the nature of the fantasy world.

Human life was cheap, and strength always trumped justice.

To survive and avoid humiliation, one must constantly grow stronger until no one could challenge them.

“Kid, if I’m not mistaken, you were only at the third layer of Body Refining. There’s no way you could have dodged that last strike of mine,” Wang Yanglie said coldly, staring at Shen Lian. “Speak. Who are you, and why did you infiltrate my Azure Cloud Sect?”

“And Wang Hui—did he discover your secret? Did you kill him?”

“It’s too troublesome to explain, but I can tell you this much: Wang Hui is indeed dead,” Shen Lian replied calmly.

As he spoke, Shen Lian slowly drew his longsword.

Seeing this, Wang Yanglie’s expression shifted from shock to pain before settling into a cold, murderous gaze.

“In that case, you’ll join my son in the afterlife.”

Wang Yanglie roared and lunged forward, his sword thrusting toward Shen Lian, unleashing a burst of three-foot-long sword energy.

The sword light was a clear sign that Wang Yanglie had surpassed the Qi Refining stage.

Shen Lian had anticipated this and dodged gracefully.

Unfortunately, the sword light was too fast, and Shen Lian wasn’t quick enough; his chest was grazed, leaving a bloody cut across his robes.

“Hmph, not bad. Even so, you won’t survive more than three moves against me,” Wang Yanglie declared arrogantly.

Having cultivated for decades, Wang Yanglie had barely managed to reach the fourth layer of Qi Refining thanks to his family’s resources, earning his position as an outer sect steward. Despite this, he still looked down on Shen Lian.

He assumed Shen Lian was a spy from another sect, infiltrating to avoid detection by keeping his cultivation below Qi Refining.

Given Shen Lian’s apparent level, Wang Yanglie was confident that killing him would be effortless.

With this in mind, Wang Yanglie’s assault intensified, his sword light extending another half-inch, sweeping toward Shen Lian with overwhelming force.

But to Shen Lian, the attack seemed unimpressive.

“All show, no substance,” Shen Lian muttered, sidestepping the attack. His sword moved in a precise arc from below, creating a flash of silver light that vanished as quickly as it appeared.

They crossed paths.

Wang Yanglie felt a sudden chill at his throat, and his body froze in place.

The next second, blood gushed from his neck like a faucet, soaking his chest.

Instinctively, he tried to stem the flow with his hands, but the blood continued to pour uncontrollably.

“How… is this possible?”

“What kind of sword technique… is this?” Wang Yanglie choked, eyes filled with disbelief as he turned to face Shen Lian.

Shen Lian had already sheathed his sword, his expression calm and indifferent.

Wang Yanglie opened his mouth, but no words came out. He fell backward, lifeless.

“Like a pig headed to slaughter. Did you really think reaching the Qi Refining stage made you invincible?” Shen Lian shook his head, sighing.

He approached Wang Yanglie’s body and began searching through his clothes.

The Qi Refining stage was an awkward realm.

While it appeared more powerful than the Body Refining stage, it mostly served as a foundation for future cultivation.

The main difference was the accumulation of spiritual energy in the body, which could be used to enhance attacks or defense.

However, in combat, the primary techniques were still Yellow Grade Lower Rank, similar to those used in the Body Refining stage.

The only advantage Qi Refining cultivators had was the ability to extend their attack range by covering their blades with spiritual energy.

Wang Yanglie, being at the fourth layer of Qi Refining, would have easily overpowered any typical Body Refining cultivator.

But Shen Lian wasn’t typical. Every one of his techniques had reached perfection, making him a formidable opponent. His mastery of swordsmanship far surpassed Wang Yanglie’s.

Moreover, Shen Lian’s continuously enhanced body, even without spiritual energy, gave him extraordinary speed and agility.

Considering all these factors, Wang Yanglie’s swift defeat was no surprise.

In this world’s cultivation system, the Foundation Establishment stage was the first major threshold. Reaching it marked a true leap in power.

Shen Lian rummaged through Wang Yanglie’s belongings and found a storage pouch filled with valuable items, befitting an outer sect steward.

There were over a hundred lower-grade spirit stones.

These stones were essential for Qi Refining and could be exchanged for other cultivation resources.

For now, Shen Lian had no use for them as he hadn’t started Qi Refining yet.

He also found various medicinal pills, mainly healing elixirs and Qi Gathering Pills.

Lastly, there was an exquisite jade bottle containing a single pill.

Upon examining it, Shen Lian’s eyes widened in surprise and joy.

“This… this is a Profound Spirit Pill?”

He couldn’t help but exclaim.

The Profound Spirit Pill was the most valuable pill among low-level cultivators, unparalleled in worth.

One of its main ingredients was Profound Spirit Grass, highlighting its rarity.

Many tenth-layer Body Refining cultivators struggled to transition to Qi Refining because they couldn’t sense Qi, remaining stuck indefinitely. Some never succeeded in their lifetimes.

However, consuming Profound Spirit Grass greatly increased the chances of a successful Qi Refining transition.

Having a Profound Spirit Pill, on the other hand, was practically a guarantee. Even the least talented could break into Qi Refining.

The pill worked by generating a cluster of neutral spiritual energy within the body, making it easy to sense and refine with the appropriate techniques, effectively advancing one to the Qi Refining stage.

“I never expected this guy to have such a precious pill,” Shen Lian said, thrilled as he stored the pill.

After a thorough search revealed nothing else of value, Shen Lian gathered some dry branches and incinerated Wang Yanglie’s remains, disposing of the evidence as he had with Wang Hui.

Unbeknownst to him, the Profound Spirit Pill had originally been intended for Wang Hui.

After Wang Hui had seized the Profound Spirit Grass, he had given it to Wang Yanglie, who then exchanged it within the family for the precious pill, intending it for his son’s use.

However, by the time Wang Yanglie had gone to find Wang Hui, he had already left the sect.

The rest, as known, led to Shen Lian acquiring the pill instead.

With the corpse disposed of and no witnesses in sight, Shen Lian quickly departed.

Next, he would return to the sect to participate in the inner disciple selection.

Once he earned the status of an inner disciple, anyone wanting to target him would have to think twice.

Though it wouldn’t make him completely safe, the difference between an inner and an outer disciple was like night and day.
