- Chapter 4 - Destroying the Evidence, Outer Sect Steward Wang Yanglie
Shen Lian opened the storage pouch and found it filled with various small items.
There were survival tools, food, clothing, and other miscellaneous items—nothing particularly valuable. However, compared to his own belongings, it was still quite a haul.
Shen Lian took everything without hesitation, adding it all to his own inventory.
Among the items, the most valuable were three lower-grade spirit stones, a gold ingot, and several hundred taels of silver. However, the Profound Spirit Grass that had been stolen from “himself” earlier that day was nowhere to be found, suggesting Wang Hui had hidden it elsewhere.
Shen Lian thoroughly searched Wang Hui’s body but came up empty-handed and had to abandon the search.
After securing his spoils, Shen Lian gathered some dry wood, arranged Wang Hui’s body on top, and set it alight using a fire starter, completely cremating the corpse.
Since he hadn’t reached the Qi Refining stage, he couldn’t use spiritual fire and had to rely on this primitive method. But in the end, the result was the same.
Wang Hui’s body was reduced to ashes, unrecognizable fragments scattered across the ground. Shen Lian then threw Wang Hui’s sect-issued longsword far away, concluding the matter.
The sword Wang Hui used was the standard issue for Azure Cloud Sect’s outer disciples—Shen Lian had one too. However, fearing that Wang Hui might have left some identifying marks on it, Shen Lian discarded the sword to prevent any connections.
Having dealt with everything, Shen Lian stood quietly, contemplating.
He knew that many had seen him and Wang Hui leave the Azure Cloud Sect together, so hiding this event was impossible. But as Wang Hui had said earlier, the sect wouldn’t concern itself with mere outer disciples.
The real trouble lay with Wang Hui’s family, known to have deep roots and significant influence within the sect. However, the exact extent of their power was beyond Shen Lian’s knowledge.
Shen Lian carefully reviewed the sequence of events, ensuring he hadn’t left any loose ends and that all traces were erased. Even if the Wang family noticed Wang Hui’s disappearance and investigated, there would be no evidence linking it to him.
Still, this didn’t guarantee his safety entirely.
“In half a month, the Azure Cloud Sect will hold its annual inner disciple selection. With my current strength, becoming an inner disciple will be a breeze.”
“Once I’m an inner disciple, the Wang family, even if they suspect me, wouldn’t dare act recklessly.”
“Inner disciples are considered the core of the Azure Cloud Sect and are not easily dealt with by outsiders.”
“That settles it. I won’t return to the sect for the next half month. I’ll train outside, earn some money if possible.”
“There’s not much to gain by returning to the sect anyway. If I make enough, I might be able to purchase some techniques and further increase my strength.”
Having made his decision, Shen Lian turned his back on the Azure Cloud Sect and ventured further into the wilderness.
Ahead lay Xiangyong Town, a town under the Azure Cloud Sect’s protection.
Located at the edge of the Shadow Forest, most of the town’s visitors were cultivators hunting beasts, selling materials, or gathering rare resources.
Xiangyong Town had a market where low-level techniques were occasionally sold, which was exactly what Shen Lian was interested in.
He aimed to venture into the Shadow Forest, intending to hunt beasts, test his newfound strength, and gather materials to try his luck.
Passing through Xiangyong Town, Shen Lian first found an inn to rest, filled his stomach, and then officially set off for the Shadow Forest.
Due to its proximity to the Azure Cloud Sect, sect experts frequently organized sweeps of the forest, leaving only low-level beasts for disciples to train against.
It had become a training ground for lower-tier disciples.
Shen Lian, moving with a relaxed demeanor, soon entered the forest.
As he ventured deeper, the beasts he encountered gradually grew stronger, from those at the fourth or fifth layer of Body Refining to those at the seventh or eighth layer.
His expression turned more serious.
Shen Lian didn’t bother with weaker beasts, as their materials wouldn’t fetch much, and he didn’t want to waste time.
Fortunately, it wasn’t long before he heard a deep beast roar. Shen Lian finally encountered a beast worth his effort.
It was a large tiger with purple stripes—known as the Purple Flame Gale Tiger.
Renowned for its speed and strength, an adult Purple Flame Gale Tiger had strength surpassing the tenth layer of Body Refining.
Compared to humans, beasts have naturally tougher bodies, making even ordinary tenth-layer cultivators struggle to defeat such a beast.
The Gale Tiger growled, locking its fierce gaze on Shen Lian. To the tiger, Shen Lian was just prey trespassing on its territory.
Feeling the beast’s unrestrained killing intent, Shen Lian gripped his sword hilt, matching the tiger’s fierce gaze without backing down.
With a thunderous roar, the Gale Tiger leapt into the air, raising its massive paw to strike Shen Lian.
The tiger’s claw was nearly half the size of Shen Lian’s body.
Shen Lian tensed, initially preparing to draw his sword, but hesitated slightly. Instead of unsheathing his blade, he ducked and darted forward.
The Gale Tiger soared overhead, missing its mark as Shen Lian ducked beneath it.
At that moment, Shen Lian sprang up and, using all his strength, drove a powerful punch into the tiger’s abdomen.
Boom!
A violent explosion rang out, accompanied by the beast’s agonized wail as blood sprayed in all directions.
Thud!
The tiger’s corpse hit the ground.
Shen Lian turned to look and saw he had punched the Purple Flame Gale Tiger in half.
“So this is the power of my full-strength punch?” Shen Lian stared blankly at his fist, momentarily stunned by the devastation he had wrought.
The Gale Tiger was twice the size of any tiger from his previous life, and its physical toughness was on an entirely different level.
Yet he had split it in two with a single punch.
After standing there dazed for a while, Shen Lian finally grasped his new strength.
Sadly, the valuable tiger hide was ruined. A complete Purple Flame Gale Tiger pelt would have fetched a high price.
Shen Lian shook his head in regret.
The ground was a mess, soaked with blood and fragments of the tiger’s organs, the stench overwhelming.
Shen Lian frowned, enduring the smell as he collected the tiger’s teeth and claws before heading further into the forest.
…
Meanwhile, back in the Azure Cloud Sect.
Beside a cluster of wooden huts that served as the outer disciples’ residence, a middle-aged figure clad in a bright yellow robe appeared.
This man, with a clean-shaven face and a stern demeanor, radiated an imposing presence without needing to speak.
After checking the markings, he found his target and called out, “Wang Hui, come out.”
There was no response from inside the hut.
“Hmm?”
The man frowned, pushing the door open to find the room empty.
“What’s going on? That kid should be here waiting. Why is he wandering off?” he muttered in displeasure.
As he stepped out, a nearby outer disciple dressed in a blue robe saw him and was startled, quickly bowing in respect.
“Greetings, Steward.”
“You may rise,” the man replied with a nod.
The yellow robe he wore signified his status as an Outer Sect Steward of the Azure Cloud Sect.
However, what the disciple didn’t know was that the man had another identity: he was Wang Hui’s father, Wang Yanglie.
