Chapter 3: Thought This Was Hell

[Clown’s Poker Card Mask: Removing it might make Clown speak a few sincere words from the heart]!

The theft actually succeeded! This item even has a small [Permit Sacrifice] label attached!

Although the identity of that white-haired head suspected to be an important NPC remains unclear, the player gained an extra life right from the start! Hooray!

Yunxi’s lips curled up instantly.

Mori Ōgai was still speaking: Your current condition isn’t suitable for movement. I suggest you return to your hospital bed first…
Yunxi snapped back to attention and opened his status panel, seeing [Injured Status: -0.3 HP per hour] and [Healing Medicine in Effect: +0.6 HP per hour].

Yunxi jumped vigorously twice on the spot, watching the HP loss value behind the injured status change to 0.5 before quickly returning to 0.3 – both lower than the recovery rate of 0.6 anyway.

No problem then!

Ignoring the blood continuously seeping from his body, Yunxi began rummaging through the area.

Yunxi found [Sketchbook with Drawings of Unidentified People]×1, [Brand New Bandages]×10, [Various Medical Tools]×12… and stuffed them all into his pockets.

Completely treating Mori Ōgai’s protests as background noise, Yunxi reached toward the medical waste bin.

Mori Ōgai finally intervened, directly blocking Yunxi.

Yunxi-kun, medical waste is very dirty. Mori Ōgai’s purple eyes appeared particularly sincere. Is there something you want? Bandages? Or medicine?
Yunxi hadn’t really wanted to touch it anyway – it was fine in pixel games, but touching such things in a Holographic Game felt rather strange.

So Yunxi stated bluntly: Then you get it for me. I want that bandage stained with Dazai’s blood.
Mori Ōgai’s expression stiffened: What did you say?
Yunxi glanced again at the [Bandage Stained with Dazai’s Blood]×1 that showed [Permit Sacrifice] after appraisal, and repeated: I want the bandage stained with Dazai’s blood.
Mori Ōgai remained silent for a long time before finally sighing: Needing Dazai’s blood… Has another special ability appeared in Yokohama?
In the small space, the two faced each other, the air seeming to freeze solid, with only the occasional glint of cold light reflecting from the scalpel Mori Ōgai was toying with in his hand.

Yunxi looked at the bandage in the trash that seemed to glow with golden light beneath its lengthy description.

Yunxi then turned back, meeting the doctor’s sharp gaze.

Realizing the doctor genuinely seemed to want to know the bandage’s value, the inherently gentle Yunxi calmly stood up and reached out, patting the doctor’s shoulder.

Yunxi had originally intended to pat his cheek, but the other dodged slightly, making him miss.

But it didn’t matter anyway, since Yunxi’s focus was on what came next.

A mocking curve slowly formed at the corner of Yunxi’s lips.

Yunxi: Old man, it’s worth ten of your lives.
Mori Ōgai: .

Mori Ōgai took several deep breaths to force himself to calm down: Since this bandage holds such high value, it seems I cannot simply give it to you. After all, my ten lives don’t come cheap…While Mori Ōgai continued to speak endlessly, Yunxi began growing impatient.

But just to be cautious, Yunxi first used a [Probe].

[Combat Power: 9]

Great! Higher than the player’s combat power of 3, but not excessively high! As long as the player utilizes their intelligence, there’s still a fighting chance!

Out of the corner of his eye, Yunxi caught sight of the golden-haired loli who had just bounced in with a combat power of 15.

At the same time, the doctor’s previously unknown Special Ability field slowly materialized.

[Special Ability: Vita Sexualis

An ability that can manipulate humanoid special abilities. Note: The manipulated abilities possess combat power far exceeding that of the original user!]

Yunxi, who never fights uphill battles: .

Yunxi gave an awkward smile.

The next second, he performed an immediate kneel-slide: I’m sorry, two Masters, I truly had no intention of offending…
The doctor said meaningfully: Oh? Then what were you doing just now…?
Yunxi said sincerely: I just wanted to show off my robust health after your treatment and thank you at the same time.
He was lying—once he was strong enough, he’d come back immediately to settle the score.

But the doctor acted as if he had really been fooled by Yunxi: Thank me? How do you plan to thank me?
Want… to repay me? The doctor continued as if still unaware of Yunxi’s thoughts, You knocked out my assistant. If you can handle all the work he was supposed to do, that would be the greatest repayment.
Yunxi, who had been planning to keep bluffing: Huh?
What did that mean?

The golden-haired, blue-eyed loli had somehow appeared behind Yunxi without him noticing.

She spoke abruptly, startling Yunxi into a little jump: Alice knows! Rintarou wants you to join [Sheep] and feed him information about [Sheep]’s leader!
Doctor: Eh? Alice-chan, don’t say it like that. I was planning to bring it up more gradually…
The doctor and the loli began bantering back and forth, and before Yunxi knew it, three minutes had passed.

Yunxi had reached his limit, but facing these two NPCs with higher combat power than his, he could only fume quietly.

Yunxi raised his hand and tapped at the air: Skip.
Mori Ōgai and Alice: ?

Finished? My turn? Yunxi disliked wasting time on dialogue and got straight to the point, You don’t want to give me Dazai’s bandages now, but you want to assign me the mission of ‘gathering intel on [Sheep]’s leader,’ right?
Mori Ōgai: Yes, but—
Yunxi interrupted: Fine, where’s Dazai?
Mori Ōgai: In the next room, but his condition is slightly worse than yours. Would you like to visit him?
Yunxi had already rushed to the small window of Dazai’s hospital room at top speed.

He quickly assessed Dazai Osamu’s condition with his own eyes and then used a [Probe] on him.

The boy named Dazai Osamu was indeed still alive, and his health was trending upward. He would fully recover in another ten days.

Like the player, the boy was wrapped in many bandages. If they could all be removed, this Dr. Mori would have a fresh supply.

Yunxi was completely reassured.

He jumped down from the small coffee table he had been standing on and spoke rapidly:

I accept your mission. The price is Dazai’s used bandages! I’ll count down from three. If you don’t say anything, I’ll take it as your agreement!
By the way, it doesn’t necessarily have to be blood-stained bandages. Other personal items belonging to Dazai-kun might work too. Dazai should wake up in about ten days. Let’s meet here again around the evening of the tenth day…
Mori Ōgai had now confirmed that this young man possessed a Special Ability to investigate others’ conditions.

He wanted to ask why the other insisted on obtaining Dazai’s belongings, but the youth had already swiftly torn off a section of fresh bandage, tied his somewhat long hair into a small ponytail, and rushed out directly.

All Mori could see were the boy’s frantically moving legs and the bandages on his body growing increasingly red.

Mori Ōgai couldn’t help but mutter: What a strange young man… Can he not feel pain?
To this extent, even Dazai who constantly sought suicide wouldn’t be willing to endure it, right?

Given this young man’s character, it would be strange if he left without taking anything…
An empty, opened wallet was handed to Mori Ōgai.

Alice blinked her beautiful blue eyes at him.

Mori Ōgai: ?

He was joking – the other actually took it???

When did he take it? Why hadn’t Mori noticed at all?

After pondering for a while without figuring it out, Mori remembered something else: Wait, did I forget to tell him the specific location of [Sheep]?
Mori Ōgai: Alice-chan, this makes me quite sad! But actually, it’s fine not to tell Yunxi-kun these details. Having Yunxi-kun search for [Sheep] himself is a good option too!
During this period, this young man who mysteriously appeared in Yokohama – whose aura clearly didn’t resemble an ordinary Esper – would likely reveal many things, such as his understanding of Yokohama, his behavioral patterns…

A dark shadow passed through Mori Ōgai’s purple eyes.

If Yunxi knew what Mori Ōgai was thinking, he would definitely curse directly.

The player kindly completes your quest, yet you withhold information – is that even human?!

But Yunxi didn’t know.

Not only did Yunxi not know, he thought it was normal for NPCs to only provide quest content while leaving the rest for players to explore themselves.

But even if he knew, it wouldn’t matter, since Yunxi was a player with very flexible moral boundaries.

When he couldn’t defeat the doctor and the loli, if his boundaries were stepped on, Yunxi would simply lower his standards.

And so, the bully-picking Yunxi thoroughly investigated Yokohama for three full days – stealing water when thirsty, slapping rich people when hungry, occasionally using [Nimble Hands] to pick pockets, treating police chases as stat training…

Finally, as the third day was ending, Yunxi arrived at a certain warehouse with his mind filled with information about [Sheep], his combat power having risen to 9 points, and a backpack full of firearms.

Rumors said this warehouse stored considerable goods, and the young members of [Sheep] loved to steal from here. But since the young Sheep weren’t very strong, they would always call their leader for help when discovered.

Yunxi planned to stage a heroic rescue of the young Sheep to directly approach [Sheep]’s leader.

First, he needed to design a slightly cool entrance for himself.

He climbed onto the factory roof and began lowering a rope, preparing to enter through a small window on the side of the building to create a dramatic entrance from above.

Everything’s going smoothly. Yunxi lowered his body, carefully listening to the commotion caused by the Sheep members and guards below. Three more seconds, then I’ll descend.
Yunxi slid down the rope in one swift motion. Adhering to his principle of caution in games, he threw a grenade at his intended landing spot before jumping in.

As the explosion rang out, Yunxi poked his head in to assess the situation, only to be met with towering flames and a blast of hot air that hit him square in the face.

Yunxi awkwardly muttered, Uh.
Somehow, Yunxi’s grenade had ignited something on the ground, and the fire was spreading rapidly.

The Sheep members were trapped by the flames, temporarily unable to escape. The guards abandoned their pursuit of the Sheep and began frantically trying to extinguish the fire.

Despite the critical situation, everyone still noticed Yunxi—the one who had caused this mess and dared to peek inside.

Yunxi met a chorus of resentful stares.

Being stared at by so many eyes was somewhat intimidating. But Yunxi was a player, and in a player’s eyes, NPCs were no different from small animals.

No one would be afraid of a bunch of small animals staring at them.

So Yunxi just glanced at the alcohol bottles in the Sheep members’ arms and laughed awkwardly twice: Haha, well, so this is a liquor storage warehouse.
Yunxi looked around: With everything burning like this, I thought it was hell.
The expressions of the Sheep members and guards darkened further.

Meanwhile, from the shadows, a white figure quietly chuckled.

Author’s Note:

———————-

Yunxi, this isn’t hell, but you unintentionally told a dark joke.

PS: In this story, combat power assessments are influenced by Special abilities. Just like how Mori Ōgai wouldn’t be completely crushed by Alice in a real fight, but Alice can fly and reassemble after dying, so Alice’s rating would be much higher. If this doesn’t seem right to you, just treat it as the author’s personal setting. Hope you enjoy reading!
