I Became Famous After I Became a Parrot in the Movie Star's House - Chapter 80
Dear Readers,
Due to a temporary website issue, starting around April 3, all novels started before January 2025 will be temporarily moved to the drafts folder for approximately 3–4 weeks. Unfortunately, this novel is included in that list.
In the meantime, I will be uploading the latest advance chapters to my Ko-fi account for my supporters. Regular updates will resume as soon as the site allows.
Thank you for your patience and support!
The clock in the living room ticks steadily, its sound becoming even more distinct in the otherwise silent atmosphere.
The snow-white parrot, oblivious to the atmosphere, busies itself preening its feathers. Beside it, the man stands silently, showing no intention of offering any explanations.
“Teacher Li.”
“Teacher Li,” the director finally breaks the silence. “Do you know your Dabai… is this talented?”
Bai Gaoxing, who has been pretending to focus on grooming, freezes mid-action.
Trouble.
He doesn’t expect the interrogation to start with Li Pu instead of targeting him directly.
Swallowing the denial that almost escapes his beak, Bai Gaoxing cautiously glances at Li Pu. The man’s expression remains composed, lacking the astonishment the others are showing.
Relieved, Bai Gaoxing straightens slightly, his tense neck relaxing.
Li Pu nods. “I’m aware,” he replies calmly.
After a brief pause, he adds, “Dabai can imitate voices—remarkably well. He’s mimicked Sister Li and me before.”
Li Pu’s tone is nonchalant, as if such behavior is entirely normal.
Bai Gaoxing’s eyes widen in disbelief.
“Really?”
Li Pu’s nonchalant attitude leaves the others puzzled. Parrots, after all, can mimic human voices. That isn’t unheard of.
Because it is Li Pu who says it, his words carry weight. If it had been Liu Liang or anyone else present, it probably wouldn’t have had the same effect.
After all, Li Pu is Dabai’s true owner.
Moreover, Li Pu always comes across as reliable.
So, the idea that Dabai can learn a command doesn’t seem that far-fetched.
It’s just… too coincidental. The parrot happens to get out when the trafficker appears, just happens to land on Doug, and just happens to issue the command. Even though it sounds a bit too coincidental, it makes sense in context. The command itself is tied to Doug, the only military dog Dabai interacts with daily among a group of strangers.
It all makes perfect sense.
Thinking of this, the program staff can’t resist teasing the parrot. “Dabai, say a few words?”
Bai Gaoxing looks up and pretends to be stupid, staying silent.
If he speaks now, wouldn’t that make things… even weirder?
“But…”
That single word sends a jolt of anxiety through Bai Gaoxing.
“But I don’t expect Dabai to actually learn these commands,” Li Pu says, pausing briefly before turning to Zhang Junjun. “I hope this hasn’t caused any trouble for Doug.”
“Oh, it’s no problem.” Zhang Junjun smiles reassuringly. “It’s probably because I shout the commands in the yard so often, and Dabai must have overheard them.”
He pats the sturdy dog beside him and adds with a chuckle, “Doug might have been confused at the time—getting instructions without being allowed to track the target scent. That’s just part of our training process. But it works out in the end since the guy is carrying drugs. Doug underwent specialized drug detection training and was top of his class that year. He’s very experienced with this kind of situation.”
So that’s how it is!
Bai Gaoxing suddenly understands and feels relieved.
If Doug had required the human trafficker’s scent, he really couldn’t have guaranteed being able to tear off a piece of fabric for Doug to sniff—especially since he hadn’t even known about that detail of the situation beforehand.
This incident not only exposes his unique ability but also highlights Doug’s intelligence.
And Doug is undeniably dedicated.
The narrative shifts from “a mysterious, spirit-like parrot” to “a smart military dog and an equally clever parrot working together.” Suddenly, Bai Gaoxing doesn’t seem so conspicuously special.
Good partner!
Bai Gaoxing is overwhelmed with mixed feelings. His mood lightens considerably, and even the spicy sensation in his mouth seems to fade away. He flies to Doug’s side, spreading his wings to pat the rough-coated dog on the back.
Doug glances at him, his tail sweeping lazily across the floor.
This situation has been skillfully defused by Li Pu.
Bai Gaoxing feels a wave of gratitude. Fortunately, he has behaved impeccably at home before, and now, that effort pays off.
As long as Li Pu considers this normal, it is normal!
Even if people harbor suspicions, who would dare question Li Pu? No one with any sense of tact would say, “Your Dabai seems suspiciously smart; better investigate him.”
Do they want to stay in this circle or not?
Bai Gaoxing flies over to Li Pu and nestles against him. You too, good partner!
“Then, can Dabai learn my voice?” Liu Liang asks eagerly, his attention now successfully diverted.
“I want that too!” Wang Hong chimes in, moving closer. “Pinke can only mimic me, but it’s not very accurate. Maybe Dabai can inspire it!”
While the group laughs and chats in the cozy villa, Weibo is already in chaos.
Specifically, the platform crashes. Refreshing the page yields nothing but error messages about emergency server repairs.
【What just happened???】
【Ugh, I’m stuck!】
【It’s official: Weibo crashed, friends! Finally, I can vent about this.】
When the hot search page reloads, the top results read:
- Dabai commands Doug to catch a criminal! [Trending]
- Perfect teamwork between Dabai and Doug—are we sure this isn’t CGI?
- Weibo crash.
As users recover from the initial shock, they start dissecting the full video, flooding it with comments.
【Let me calm down first… So you’re saying that, with Zhang Jun absent, it’s Dabai who commands Doug to capture the criminal?】
【This is incredible. I just watch a parrot coordinate with a military dog!】
【Somebody pinch me—am I dreaming?】
【Wait a second, this has to be CGI, right? No way this is real…】
【Special effects? No matter how bold the program team is, they can’t ask the police to cooperate! Didn’t you see the notice with the white text on the blue background?】
The police announcement successfully shuts down the speculation that the show is “faking” the incident.
However, the online reaction remains intense.
This event is nothing short of… “fantastical.” It’s a flawless coordination, a well-timed command, and a positive influence on society—full of strange elements that most people can hardly comprehend.
What’s more, there’s no “human” involvement in the process.
It’s far too aligned with people’s idealized vision of animal intelligence… It’s hard to believe.
As a result, those with differing opinions clash fiercely.
【Too fake! ‘Cute Pet Diary’ actually pulls this stunt to grab attention? I’m never watching again.】
【Didn’t you see the police’s statement?】
【No, Dabai was in The Long Song! It can mimic voices. If you haven’t seen it, don’t make wild guesses, okay?】
Finally, @IWantToGraduate! timidly steps in, confirming that the video was taken by them accidentally and that the program team had nothing to do with it: 【Everyone, please stop arguing, this is real, I swear! If it’s fake, I’ll fail my graduation project!】
This promise is convincing, but it still doesn’t sway the opinions of those who are set in their beliefs. The debate rages on throughout the night.
If this continues, it could negatively affect the program’s subsequent broadcasts.
The program team has no choice but to step in.
@PetDiary: 【First of all, thank you for your concern for Dabai and Doug. We never intend to encounter such accidents while filming… In dangerous situations like this, safety should always come first, and the police should be called immediately. For more details, please refer to @JiangchengPolice notice from the other day.】
The post is a lengthy explanation, but the key message is clear: This is definitely not scripted!
Soon after, the program team releases two videos.
The first video features Zhang Junjun directing Doug. In the living room at night, Doug follows commands like shaking hands, spinning, and playing dead—some new tricks that have never been seen on the show before. The camera shifts, and the scene moves outside. With moonlight behind him, Zhang Junjun gives the military dog a command: “Doug, pounce!”
Doug’s movement toward the props matches exactly with what was shown in the previous video.
The second video, of course, features Dabai.
This time, both Dabai’s owner, Li Pu, and two other guests are in the frame.
Wang Hong waves at the camera and gestures to Dabai, “Show everyone how amazing Dabai is!”
She then addresses the parrot, “Good evening, Dabai!”
The parrot responds, “Good evening, Dabai!”
The imitation is so accurate, even the tone of voice is identical.
Wang Hong continues talking to Dabai for a while, repeating a few simple phrases until she finally says, “Teacher Li, aren’t you coming over?”
At this point, Dabai’s voice clearly shifts.
The snow-white parrot’s pupils constrict slightly, as if exerting some effort. “Teacher Li, don’t you want to come over?”
It’s Wang Hong’s voice.
Though slightly raspy, it’s at least 90% accurate.
The next moment, Liu Liang’s head appears in the frame. “I, I, I, it’s my turn!”
The young man looks serious, “Dabai, try to imitate my voice! Hello~”
The white parrot tilts its head and stares at him, showing no interest whatsoever.
Liu Liang continues, his voice a strange mutter, almost like a demonic chant.
Finally, Dabai speaks.
It clears its throat twice and lowers its voice. “Susu, if you don’t behave, I’ll turn you into crispy duck.”
The soft tone makes it sound as if Liu Liang is whispering in someone’s ear.
Liu Liang shivers, his back prickling. “Don’t say that! When did you hear me say that?”
After the two videos are released, Weibo falls silent.
This… this doesn’t quite fit the worldview!
According to common knowledge, parrots are supposed to be a little silly, only able to learn a few words with some effort. The smart ones might memorize Tang poems or perform tricks like beatboxing, but something like this? Impossible!
The intense online debate suddenly calms down.
【Mainly, there are just too few people raising large parrots… you could check out Xinghuo, there are many smart parrots there.】
【There’s a gray parrot that seems like it’s possessed, and it can mimic its owner’s voice.】
【Wow, thank goodness I don’t raise one, and I don’t have the money to. It’s too human-like, one day it could give someone a heart attack!】
【……】
“Finally, some peace and quiet.” Liu Liang sighs in relief, scrolling through the comments on Weibo.
“Let me read these out to you, hahaha. They’re saying Dabai might be a monster, a spirit!” Wang Hong laughs.
What are they even talking about? I’m just a little parrot who can mimic a few words.
Bai Gaoxing adjusts the feathers on his chest.
He’s been thinking long and hard about when to imitate their voices. It has to happen naturally, without seeming deliberate. That takes a lot of effort.
Bai Gaoxing exhales softly and looks up at Li Pu. The man is also looking at him, his expression unreadable.
Should I give him some rewards?
But the reality is the opposite.
After returning to the bedroom and preparing for bed, Bai Gaoxing stands on the table with his head lowered, accepting Li Pu’s scolding.
“…Don’t do this again.”
Li Pu stands before him, arms crossed, exuding an air of authority and intimidation.
Huh? Why?
Bai Gaoxing raises his head and tries to act cute but is stopped by a single glance.
Okay, fine. TvT.
In the future, he’ll do something in secret and surprise everyone again!
But it seems like Li Pu has read his mind and says, “If you do this again, I’ll confiscate your snacks and you won’t be going out to play.”
Bai Gaoxing: “Huh?”
What on earth did I do to offend you?
Bai Gaoxing stares at Li Pu in disbelief, his black gemstone-like eyes shining in the light, as if they’re tears of accusation.
It’s so pitiful.
Li Pu purses his lips, stands still for a moment, and then reaches out to gently ruffle his feathers.
“Too dangerous.”
“Huh…”
Then he looks guilty.
Bai Gaoxing still remembers the scene of the cold knife falling to the ground, and Li Pu’s panicked expression…
So, he was worried about me?
Bai Gaoxing blinks, a trace of something elusive stirring in his heart. He quickly responds with a bright, “Huh!”
I won’t do it again!
Then he happily jumps into bed and settles down. Bai Gaoxing has figured out that whenever something happens, Li Pu lets him go to bed as a kind of compromise.
After the lights are turned off, the room plunges into darkness, with only a faint glow from the yard filtering through the curtains.
The autumn night grows cooler, and the warm quilt feels far more comfortable than the cold stand. Bai Gaoxing finds a cozy spot, snuggles in, and slowly closes his eyes.
“Buzz—” The phone vibrates.
Li Pu reaches for the phone, his eyes briefly reflecting the soft glow as he reads the message.
It’s from his agent.
【You should be about ready to return tomorrow. Get ready to attend the Golden Tong Award ceremony.】
