Dear Readers,

Due to a temporary website issue, starting around April 3, all novels started before January 2025 will be temporarily moved to the drafts folder for approximately 3–4 weeks. Unfortunately, this novel is included in that list.

In the meantime, I will be uploading the latest advance chapters to my Ko-fi account for my supporters. Regular updates will resume as soon as the site allows.

Thank you for your patience and support!

“To think I can actually eat food cooked by Teacher Li…” Liu Liang, now a devoted fan, takes the initiative to grab an apron. “Then I’ll help out!”

Wang Hong: “Then I’ll go steam the rice.”

Bai Gaoxing looks at the guests who are about to join the battle and glances at the living room.

You’re all crowded in the kitchen—who’s going to watch the pets?

Fortunately, Zhang Junjun also thinks of this and says, “Someone has to watch Doug and the others outside.”

Liu Liang: “Yes! Then who will watch them?”

The three of them turn to him.

Finally, Liu Liang brings Bai Gaoxing to the living room.

“Ah… I can’t cook, so I’ll just serve my masters~” Liu Liang mumbles, placing Bai Gaoxing on the bird stand prepared by the production team before putting his duck into a box. As for Doug, no need to worry; its owner is busy, and it’s already settled down beside the sofa. Pingke stands on a nearby clothes rack, grooming its feathers and showing no intention of coming down, though it looks very well-behaved.

Now, two birds, one duck, and one dog are gathered together.

“You stay here first, I’ll go get the water basin…” Liu Liang looks around and quickly disappears into the kitchen.

In the quiet room, only the cameras in the four corners continue to watch the pets.

Finally, Bai Gaoxing breathes a sigh of relief and openly observes the other three “colleagues,” pondering in his mind.

Doug, a dog—handsome, but there should be no common topics. Pingke, a fellow parrot—definitely someone he can communicate with, but he’s never heard it speak. Is it an extremely introverted personality? Susu, a Call duck—well, a poultry…?

Taking advantage of his height, Bai Gaoxing can see the situation in the paper box very clearly. The Call duck inside stretches out its neck curiously. It flaps its wings and tries to jump out, but fails because it is too fat.

Bai Gaoxing laughs and continues to stare at the Call duck.

—He doesn’t notice that the pink parrot on the clothes rack opposite is watching him.

As for the duck… could it understand him?

Bai Gaoxing can’t help but think about this question. After all the time since he became a parrot, he is almost sure he can understand what birds say, but this cross-species language seems to be limited to birds, not to cats, dogs, fish, or insects.

It’s a good thing he can’t, or it would be too scary.

Bai Gaoxing narrows his eyes and listens to the box. A “quack, quack” sound comes from inside.

Ducks—are they poultry?

The scope of poultry is broader than that of birds. So far, he can’t confirm whether he can understand the language of birds or the entire avian species.

But as long as he can communicate with this Call duck, he will be sure.

Thinking of this, Bai Gaoxing spreads his wings and lands lightly on the edge of the paper box before anyone returns.

Doug lazily glances at him and lies back down; Pingke’s eyes follow him.

“Hey,” Bai Gaoxing moves his claws on the paper box, making a rustling sound. “Can you understand what I’m saying?”

He uses bird language.

Thud! The Call Duck jumps fiercely, its beak hitting the edge of the paper box.

So fierce!

Bai Gaoxing moves to the side again and tilts his head to look at it. “Can’t you?”

Call Duck: “Quack, quack, quack!!”

Ah, then he is relieved.

Bai Gaoxing looks at it with satisfaction.

The audience in the live broadcast room has seen the whole scene.

【Dabai is so naughty!】

【Did it deliberately go to play with Susu? Hahahaha】

【Is that possible? But why not go to Pingke, after all, they’re both parrots?】

【Maybe it’s bullying the one that can’t fly?】

【Pretty good, I thought they were going to fight, but it seems pretty harmonious.】

【Ahhh, can you move a little? They are all too honest!】

After confirming that the Call Duck can’t communicate, the honest parrot Bai Gaoxing flies back to where he had just stood. Coincidentally, Liu Liang comes back.

Classmate Liu is holding a few feeders and small bags of dog food, bird food, and duck feed. The camera sweeps over them one by one, advertising the items.

“Come here, it’s time to eat!” he calls.

The other three go to eat, but Bai Gaoxing stays where he is.

“Come on, Dabai, eat,” Liu Liang calls him.

Bai Gaoxing shakes his head. “No!”

If he eats now, how will he enjoy what Li Pu made later?

Liu Liang seems surprised by his fluent answer. He is stunned for a moment before saying, “Okay, then don’t eat it.”

The rich aroma of the food soon begins to float through the air. It’s a familiar smell! Bai Gaoxing can’t wait to look into the kitchen and sees Li Pu still busy.

Doug’s tail, which had been flat, also begins to wag.

Liu Liang feels his mouth watering, lifting his sleeve to wipe his face. Then, remembering he’s in front of the camera, he doesn’t want to look too embarrassing and instead takes a deep breath.

Not long after, Wang Hong calls from the kitchen, “It’s time to eat!”

Liu Liang is ready to rush over.

But faster than him is a white flash that swooshes right past him.

What just passed by!?

“It smells so good, Teacher Li, you’re such a great cook!” Wang Hong can’t help but sigh in the kitchen, and Zhang Junjun nods in agreement.

However, Li Pu doesn’t immediately respond to her praise. Instead, he asks, “Is there no food cover here?”

“What?” Wang Hong doesn’t react immediately.

Li Pu: “Keep an eye on these dishes.”

“Ah?”

The next moment, the flapping sound grows louder and closer, moving with the speed of flight.

“Dabai!”

Bai Gaoxing brakes mid-air and lands obediently within the safe range of a table full of delicacies, tilting his head as he looks at the spread.

It’s quite pitiful.

Just as Wang Hong is stunned, another pink shadow flutters in and lands on her shoulder.

Bai Gaoxing glances at Pingke, turns around, and tugs at Li Pu’s clothes.

See? The other parrot is just like me!

But to his surprise, Wang Hong says in astonishment, “Pingke, how did you get in here?”

She pets her parrot a couple of times and smiles at the others, saying, “Pingke doesn’t like the smell of cooking oil, so whenever I cook at home, he hides far away.”

Pingke tilts his head.

During dinner, Wang Hong finally understands why Li Pu wants to cover the dishes. She then starts talking about what parrots eat.

“Ah, when Pingke was little, he was really greedy, wanting to try a bite of everything, but later he lost interest in most things,” she says. “Maybe Dabai is still young.”

Li Pu lowers his gaze. “He hasn’t grown up yet.”

Bai Gaoxing, who is secretly stealing chicken nuggets, freezes. “…”

Wang Hong continues, “It’s better to give him less human food. You can feed him some vegetables or something like that.” She then goes to the kitchen, picks out some tender leaves from the vegetables, and hands one to Pingke and the other to Bai Gaoxing.

Bai Gaoxing reluctantly takes it. “…Thank you?”

His face clearly expresses his displeasure.

Lettuce leaves are bland and tasteless. Why can’t they give me some sauce to dip it in?

After dinner, Liu Liang volunteers to take care of the dishwashing, and the program team seizes the opportunity to introduce new tasks.

Bai Gaoxing stands on Li Pu’s shoulder and watches.

“Play a game… to test the tacit understanding between owners and pets,” Liu Liang reads aloud, then panics. “What kind of tacit understanding can I have with a duck?!”

Zhang Junjun chuckles.

It’s probably a confident laugh.

“It’s related to the ingredients for tonight’s dinner–” Wang Hong continues reading.

Bai Gaoxing understands immediately. In short, they have to complete several small games to assess the level of tacit understanding between the owner and the pet. The top two will be treated to a luxurious meal provided by the program team, while their pets will also receive high-end snacks. The bottom two will have to cook for themselves, just like at noon. The last place will be even worse—they’ll have to cook for their pet as well.

How miserable.

Bai Gaoxing feels a slight sympathy for the guest most likely to lose—wasn’t this a vacation for pets, while the owners fight for their survival?

So heartfelt!

“The activity will start after three o’clock. During this time, you can take your pets to get familiar with the environment and cultivate tacit understanding,” the director says with a smile.

“Ah… It feels hard to win,” Wang Hong says, glancing between Li Pu and Zhang Junjun, looking a little helpless.

Liu Liang covers his face. “Just tell me how to make duck food already.”

The pets are taken away by their respective owners.

Bai Gaoxing looks at Li Pu and happens to catch the man’s gaze.

He tentatively stretches out his claws and gently pulls at the fabric on Li Pu’s shoulders.

Don’t worry.

I’ve got your back.
