Dear Readers,

Due to a temporary website issue, starting around April 3, all novels started before January 2025 will be temporarily moved to the drafts folder for approximately 3–4 weeks. Unfortunately, this novel is included in that list.

In the meantime, I will be uploading the latest advance chapters to my Ko-fi account for my supporters. Regular updates will resume as soon as the site allows.

Thank you for your patience and support!

However, the next day, before Bai Gaoxing can get the scenes he wants to add, he is presented with a contract.

“This is a new offer,” Director Sun says, pushing the paper across the long table to Li Pu with a serious expression. “Dabai’s role has grown in importance, and his characterization can now be elevated. Previously, due to other parrots’ poor performances, the screenwriters reluctantly had to cut this part. But now, with Dabai, ‘The Long Song’ will reach new heights!”

He clears his throat. “However, the additional scenes may be more challenging for a parrot, and this is the remuneration I’m offering in good faith.”

Bai Gaoxing looks down and sees the black-and-white text on the paper, which states that in addition to the previous contract, he will receive a substantial salary increase—one, two, three, four… with so many zeros!

Wow—you should agree to this!

Bai Gaoxing looks at Li Pu, with ¥-shaped light flashing in his eyes.

Li Pu picks up the contract, skims through it quickly, then gently sets it down, shaking his head. “I’m sorry, Director Sun. These scenes are too much for Dabai. I don’t think he’ll be able to meet your requirements.”

It is extremely difficult and will take a long time to train Dabai.

Li Pu strokes the parrot’s head.

After receiving the director’s proposal, he thinks about it overnight and decides to refuse.

After all, it is too much for a parrot to fully participate in this filming.

Director Sun, watching Li Pu’s calm and unwavering expression, feels a growing sense of urgency. He hadn’t anticipated the possibility of rejection. What could the problem be? It can’t be about money, so it must be—

Director Sun furrows his brow and purses his lips. “Do you think I will treat Dabai like I would any other actor, forcing him to keep practicing until he performs perfectly? Or that I will keep filming until we get the most satisfactory take?”

Li Pu doesn’t respond but simply stares at him quietly.

Director Sun feels like an arrow has struck his knee.

The look seems to say: What do you think?

“Of course not!” Director Sun stands up, trying to argue. “I’ll treat Dabai like my own—er, my own parrot. I won’t let him go thirsty or hungry, and he’ll be happy on set every day.”

Even after saying that, Li Pu’s response is still: “Sorry.”

The negotiation falls apart.

The opportunity is right in front of him, yet he can’t seize it. Director Sun sighs in deep regret. He probably won’t sleep well for the next several nights.

But just as Li Pu stands up to leave, the parrot gives him a new glimmer of hope.

Instead of flying to Li Pu’s shoulder as usual, Bai Gaoxing slowly walks over to the contract and sits down.

Bai Gaoxing squats down like a hen.

Sorry, he really thinks acting is too much fun QAQ. Don’t take this fun away from him!

Bai Gaoxing tries to express his excitement with his eyes, but Director Sun shouts excitedly, “Look! Dabai also wants to act!”

Really?

With a skeptical expression, Li Pu reaches out to grab the contract, but Bai Gaoxing immediately flops down and holds it tightly.

Li Pu: “…”

Bai Gaoxing: QAQ

“Okay.” After a moment of silence, Li Pu compromises. “If it really doesn’t work during filming, I hope all the scenes added for Dabai will be cut.”

“Of course.” Director Sun agrees readily. “The worst-case scenario is that we use the current version. I’ve made a note of it! Look.”

Finally, Li Pu, as the owner, signs, and a vermilion claw mark is left beside the signature.

The director hums happily as he leaves, leaving Li Pu standing there, tapping Bai Gaoxing’s head. “No snacks today.”

Ugh, personal vengeance!

…

Afterward, Li Pu takes him to the changing area.

It seems like Li Pu has a role today? Bai Gaoxing looks around excitedly, but then feels a little disappointed.

It seems he won’t get to witness Li Pu’s filming after all… What’s even worse is that if Li Pu films later, they’ll have to be in separate locations, and he won’t be able to see his acting style!

Bai Gaoxing is waiting to start filming his new scenes, but after seeing the director again a while later, he learns that Huang Shaqing has other schedules for the next three days.

“After I told Teacher Huang that we couldn’t wrap up the filming for now, her expression… tsk tsk tsk.”

After discussing a few funny things, Director Sun gets down to business. “Dabai won’t be needed for the next two days.” He pauses. “The trainer will continue to work with him, and the specific reshoots will have to wait for Teacher Huang to come back. But the scenes are relatively simple—some feeding and caressing movements. The rest… I’ll discuss with the screenwriter.”

This pause feels significant, making Bai Gaoxing think there is something bigger planned.

Director Sun waves his hand. “Okay, hurry up and get into makeup. Let’s try to finish your court appearance scene today.”

Bai Gaoxing stands on the golden cage frame for filming. Assistant Lin Shi temporarily places him on a small stool next to him. Li Pu goes to change and get his makeup done by a special staff.

When Li Pu comes out, he is dressed just as he had been on the first day.

His long black hair flows smoothly behind him. His purple official uniform is embroidered with elegant and beautiful patterns. With his tall figure and perfect physique, it is easy to make people nervous just by glancing at him.

Bai Gaoxing thinks he looks quite good. He glances down and sees the chain is long enough. He flaps his wings and is about to fly toward him. The costume staff sees the sharp claws of the parrot and shouts in surprise, “Hey! Don’t stand on the clothes! You’ll scratch them!”

Li Pu is momentarily stunned but instinctively reaches out to catch him. Bai Gaoxing pulls the chain and circles around the top of the cage a few times before finally landing on the small chair next to him.

“I’m scared to death.” The costume staff pats their chest, and after coming to their senses, they ask incredulously, “It really understands?”

Many people have come to watch the scene at Changning Palace yesterday.

One reason is to witness what has been holding up Director Sun for so long, and the other is to see how smart the so-called “parrot of the movie emperor” really is.

The news quickly spreads inside the venue, reaching outside as well. They soon hear descriptions like, “Dabai can imitate Huang Jie’s voice” and “Dabai understands the director’s words.” At the time, they had thought these rumors were just getting exaggerated. But now… could it really be true?

Before they know it, the costume and makeup staff gather to see the legendary parrot for themselves.

Bai Gaoxing, feeling a bit shy under all the attention, hesitates for a moment and then greets them in a socially awkward manner: “Hello!”

“Oh——!” The crowd exclaims.

Soon, Bai Gaoxing is carried by his assistant, Lin Shi, to the filming location for Li Pu.

The scene on set is much grander, with more characters and a larger scale of shooting. Bai Gaoxing looks around and sees more than a dozen cameras set up in different positions outside the court, not to mention how many are inside.

He remembers Director Sun saying that Li Pu’s role involves debating with the officials — no wonder Li Pu spends so much time immersed in his script at home. It seems most of this scene is likely his lines…

It is a pity that Bai Gaoxing won’t be able to see Li Pu act.

There are no scenes for small animals, and animals aren’t allowed in, either. After a while, Bai Gaoxing almost wishes he could turn back into a human just to witness it.

“Dabai, Teacher Li will come out soon,” Lin Shi says, as though sensing his longing. “Just wait a little longer!”

In the end, his wish really comes true!

A group of people dressed in various colored court robes emerges, and then Li Pu, dressed in purple, appears. The group doesn’t disperse but instead stays in front of the stone steps and ridicules each other.

Facing the angry ministers, Li Pu stands with a meaningless smile on his face, appearing particularly at ease. His eyes are dark, yet with a glint of deeper light, giving the impression that he is about to do something significant.

“You, you, you—!” The oldest courtier, the leader among the ministers, points at him tremblingly, his eyes full of disgust. “People like you… Sooner or later—!”

Before he can finish his sentence, his anger is palpable, suggesting just how heated their argument in the palace has been.

The words are faint because they are standing far away, but fortunately, they can still hear bits of it.

But just as the lines are about to be discerned, a sigh is heard behind them, and then Lin Shi mutters, “It’s over, Brother Li is so charming even when playing the villain Boss… I might have to start rooting for the villain.”

Villain Boss!

Oh my god, it turns out Li Pu is playing a bad guy!

How exciting!

Bai Gaoxing stares at the man on the steps, trying to detect any sign of fear from the villain’s aura. However, every move and every word from the other person is so captivating that it is impossible to dislike him at all—

So, he’s the bad guy!

Bai Gaoxing indulges in the thought, feeling quite proud.

His eyes continue to follow the dark blue figure, and he suddenly realizes that Li Pu in the play feels entirely different from his usual self, almost like a completely different person—without a trace of his true self.

Suddenly, as if seeing through a foggy lens, Bai Gaoxing understands why Li Pu has always sat quietly when they first met.

No wonder he needs such long breaks…

Bai Gaoxing blinks disapprovingly. Getting too deep into the role really isn’t a good thing.

A few hours later, the court scene for the day wraps up.

Bai Gaoxing scans the chaotic crowd for Li Pu and then hears Lin Shi’s voice calling, “Teacher Li!”

The dark purple figure appears in front of him without Bai Gaoxing noticing.

“Yeah,” Li Pu responds coldly, his voice lacking any hint of warmth.

Bai Gaoxing slowly raises his head and sees that there is still a trace of darkness in the man’s eyes, as if ice lingers at the corners of his brows and gaze.

The man who has been handed the cage and bird stares at him for a moment, closes his eyes, and when he opens them again, the coldness seems to fade.

Well… Li Pu is still handsome like this!

Close-up snuggle.

…

Over the next two days, Bai Gaoxing successfully goes through his routines with the trainer, performing all the required actions to the trainer’s surprise.

He can’t be bothered to pretend too much, so he only pretends a little.

Especially when the other party calls in two more trainers for a visit.

Thanks to his rapid progress, he not only avoids overtime but also has time to wander the set with Lin Shi or the trainer during his breaks.

He gets to know nearly everyone in the crew, though sometimes strangers appear, visiting the set.

“Director Sun is very strict about controlling the crew. He doesn’t allow media or fan clubs in. Only close friends of the actors are allowed in,” Bai Gaoxing overhears in a conversation.

That makes him pause, and his thoughts immediately turn to Li Pu.

He thinks… Li Pu doesn’t seem to have many friends?

Then, his concern for the other man deepens.

As the filming continues, Li Pu’s condition appears to worsen. Bai Gaoxing reads the script a few times, but the roles are all minor supporting characters, and he still can’t figure out who Li Pu is playing.

However, he overhears a conversation between Li Pu and the director.

“Yes, this role is difficult to master. It’s hard to understand him in the original book. He wants to turn the court upside down, and his attitude seems to be one of inevitable defeat… Perhaps his final failure isn’t just due to his lack of skill and arrogance, but because he sees the brilliance in the heroine and realizes his internal conflict is resolved—there’s nothing left for him to hold onto.”

That is Director Sun’s description of the role, but all Bai Gaoxing can feel is danger.

Determined to die… No, no! Absolutely not!

With a click of the door, Li Pu returns.

The man walks over to the sofa, sits down, and crosses his hands against his forehead. He looks heavy, weary, and lost in thought.

Bai Gaoxing stands on the ground, observing him for a moment. He tugs at Li Pu’s pants with his beak, but seeing no response, he begins to climb up determinedly.

Li Pu feels the movement on his legs, glances down, and slowly gets up. He goes over to the refrigerator, takes out the fruit plate, and places it on the table.

“Hungry?” His low voice breaks the silence, and Bai Gaoxing looks up to see a faint, reluctant smile on his face, as if he’s trying to show a bit of warmth despite his exhaustion.

Bai Gaoxing sighs inwardly—there’s no way he can eat. Instead, he hops onto Li Pu’s lap and snuggles against him like he used to at home.

The small, warm ball of feathers is impossible to ignore, like a flickering flame, making the otherwise dim room feel brighter.

Li Pu freezes for a moment, then gently picks up the large white parrot with both hands. He purses his lips and presses his forehead against Bai Gaoxing’s soft body.

The parrot’s fluffy belly carries the comforting scent of grains and fruits, and its high-frequency heartbeat brings an unexpected sense of comfort.

The bird in his hands doesn’t struggle at all, as though it’s intentionally trying to soothe his emotions.

For a moment, Li Pu understands why so many people keep pets for comfort. He’s glad he took his friend’s advice back then.

Feeling the warm breath against his skin, Bai Gaoxing trembles slightly before proudly lifting his belly.

Come! Breathe it in! Isn’t having a pet all about relieving stress? Don’t be shy!

Time passes slowly in the quiet room. It’s broad daylight outside, but this space feels like a secret, peaceful sanctuary.

But soon, the tranquility is interrupted by the sound of footsteps approaching.

“Yo.” After three knocks, a golden head pushes the door open before quickly retreating.

A few seconds later, the figure reappears, peeking around the door. Seeing the scene inside clearly, they ask with a smile, “Did I disturb you?”
