Dear Readers,

Due to a temporary website issue, starting around April 3, all novels started before January 2025 will be temporarily moved to the drafts folder for approximately 3–4 weeks. Unfortunately, this novel is included in that list.

In the meantime, I will be uploading the latest advance chapters to my Ko-fi account for my supporters. Regular updates will resume as soon as the site allows.

Thank you for your patience and support!

Two days earlier.

“… That’s what happens.” After explaining the actor’s issues during filming, Director Sun lets out a long sigh and offers a cigarette.

Li Pu declines the cigarette, pauses for a moment, and apologizes, “I really don’t want Dabai to get involved.”

Director Sun remains silent.

He realizes he has been too optimistic.

After all, Dabai is Li Pu’s pet. No matter how well the crew handles things, how could it compare to the comfort of home, where there’s no need to worry about anything?

Li Pu thinks the same.

No matter how good the crew is, it can never compare to home and the company, especially with the weather being so bad lately. Dabai might end up getting sick or adjusting poorly to the new environment…

Li Pu can’t shake his concerns.

After thinking it over, Li Pu nods and turns to head to the set.

“Wait!” Director Sun calls after him.

The director, who always strives for perfection in his scenes, is not ready to give up. “We’ll sign a contract and pay Dabai at the standard rate for actors. I’ve seen all its work; it’s perfect for the camera. Give it a chance—no, I mean, let Dabai give me a chance.”

Li Pu pauses.

But even with such a sincere request, he still refuses.

And so, Director Sun embarks on his path of earnestly asking twice each day. Once before filming, and once after, to the point that those unaware of the situation on set start noticing and assume he’s trying to pull some strings.

Li Pu, though patient, politely refuses every time. Yet, deep down, he is a little shaken. It has been a while since he left Jiangcheng. He has only heard about Dabai’s recent situation through his assistant and agent. After so much time apart, he misses the softness of its feathers, and sometimes even thinks about how cute Dabai was during their vacation time at home.

Neither of them budges, but with the weather forecast set to clear up next week, just when Director Sun thinks he might truly have no chance, he stumbles upon Lei Li’s live stream.

“Teacher Li, have you seen this?”

At this moment, they’ve just wrapped up filming for the day, and the actors are leaving in groups, giving the two enough space to talk.

Li Pu takes the phone handed to him and sees Dabai interacting with Lei Li in her personal live stream room.

“This is…”

“This must be Dabai,” Director Sun’s face is filled with excitement and joy. He keeps looking at Li Pu, trying to gauge his expression. “Dabai has great potential as an outstanding actor. Its speech is so clear, it must have no trouble talking…”

Li Pu thinks for a moment and asks, “Does the parrot need to learn any specific actions?”

He remembers the video Lei Li sent him the day before, where Dabai performs various movements under the guidance of someone who seems to be a professional bird trainer.

Dabai is indeed still impressive; it has mastered these actions long ago and has shown them off in front of him even back at home, though he has no idea where it learned them… Sometimes, he can’t help but feel that Dabai is almost too clever.

When Li Pu’s thoughts pause here, he turns around and hears Director Sun cheerfully respond, “That’s not necessary. Just have it stay in the birdcage and say the lines.”

That would be much easier—the actor who has no idea that speaking is actually more difficult—thinks so.

Li Pu tries to imagine Dabai as an actor and nearly laughs. If Dabai actually comes here, he’s not sure how the crew will be able to manage it.

As this thought crosses his mind, his previously relaxed expression becomes more serious.

“…Are you worried that Dabai won’t be comfortable here?” After thinking it over, Director Sun decides that’s the only concern and immediately reassures him, “You know how I run the set—I’ll never slack on this. Didn’t we borrow animals from the zoo before? We returned them without losing a single hair.”

He even promises to find someone to get the specific food Dabai is used to eating, and they can buy a whole case of drinking water from Jiangcheng for Dabai. The management will also hire extra staff to keep an eye on it and set up a separate large birdcage where Dabai can fly freely, ensuring it won’t have a chance to run off.

“Besides,” Director Sun accidentally drops a bomb that hits his heart, “You’ve been separated from your pet for so long. If you don’t miss it, it will miss you too. If you leave it alone, it will feel uncomfortable.”

Li Pu glances at the screen again. The large white parrot in the live broadcast room stares at the screen blankly, looking lonely.

He can tell that while Dabai interacts with his agent from time to time, it is always casual and indifferent—nothing like the playful, cute demeanor it has at home.

At that moment, Li Pu is completely swayed.

“So… you mean you want to bring Dabai to the set?”

On the other end of the phone, Lei Li raises an eyebrow in surprise at Li Pu’s request and glances at the parrot on the table. “How could it be bad? I’ll support it.”

She continues, “Dabai is your parrot, after all. No matter how many people the company sends to help, it’s not the same as being with its owner.”

Li Pu slides his finger across the back of the phone screen. “Then let Dashu bring it over, the sooner the better.”

“Okay,” Lei Li replies, then pauses. “Do you want to talk to Dabai?”

Before Li Pu can respond, she stretches the phone towards the parrot’s head. “Your master wants to say hello?”

Bai Gaoxing, still confused about why his agent said “stay together,” is caught off guard by the phone suddenly held in front of him.

He places his feathered crown on top of his head and says, “Hello, good evening darling, have you eaten?”

He hasn’t heard the previous sentence—no, he hasn’t heard it at all! Bai Gaoxing silently prays.

However, his wish isn’t granted. A few seconds later, a familiar voice comes from the other end of the phone: “Well, hello, good evening. Yes, I ate. And forget the word you just learned.”

So, he did hear it.

But Bai Gaoxing is still touched by Li Pu’s response, listening attentively with bright eyes as he gazes at the phone’s microphone.

Not long after, Director Sun takes over the phone and begins discussing the details with Lei Li.

The live broadcast room erupts once again. Bai Gaoxing watches the fans’ excited comments and jumps onto the mouse.

He clicks mute.

The barrage quickly fills with question marks.

After the conversation ends, Lei Li finally returns to the computer, ready to say goodbye to the people in the live stream.

Too many comments catch her attention. As she reads them closely, she notices the microphone is off. She laughs, “Maybe Dabai accidentally touched it.”

Bai Gaoxing blinks innocently.

Then, he sees his agent turn off the computer, switch off the lights, and take out her phone to make a call.

…

The next day, Bai Gaoxing is on a plane to Chuncheng.

Ticket check, security check, boarding. Now he understands why someone had brought him back and forth early that morning. Before he is fully awake, he sees an animal quarantine certificate in his name.

“Dabai, want to come out and stretch?” Mei Youshu says, opening the door of the airline box. “But just so you know, you’ll have to go back in after we land.”

Bai Gaoxing nods and steps out of the box.

It is actually first class!

Bai Gaoxing glances around at the spacious, separated seats. No wonder the assistant dared to let him out.

Seeing Mei Youshu looking around but not paying attention to him, Bai Gaoxing decides not to scare him. He stays quietly in his seat, watching the clouds pass by the window.

The light blue sky is vast and endless, with the morning sun tinting the clouds gold. His mood is like that of a bird soaring freely in the sky.

Let time pass faster!

Finally, after several hours of flight and a long taxi ride after landing, they reach their destination.

An ancient city, bluestone streets, budding flowers.

Bai Gaoxing squats in the carrier, being lifted like in a cable car, leisurely enjoying the scenery outside.

The sky here is a light blue, slightly cloudy, but not cold. The breeze is gentle and mild, a far cry from the fierce wind in the video from the other day.

Flowers and trees line the streets, which are neat and ancient, radiating a sense of solemnity and majesty, as if every brick has a story to tell.

Bai Gaoxing takes a deep breath and feels the air is filled with the scent of flowers.

No wonder it’s called Spring City.

Then, he can’t help but jump a few times. It is really fun to be on a business trip with a salary!

Mei Youshu feels the airline box shake in his hand. Thinking the parrot is uncomfortable, he comforts it. “We’re almost there. You’ll see Brother Li soon.”

Bai Gaoxing calms down and glances at the roadside. Even the wildflowers look cute to him.

Finally, they arrive at the entrance of an ancient palace.

Equipment is set up everywhere, and people dressed in ancient costumes are scattered in small groups, hurrying around. Occasionally, someone glances at Mei Youshu.

Mei Youshu, carrying only an airline box, isn’t attracting much attention like those carrying props and equipment.

Bai Gaoxing listens closely. In the large courtyard, the sounds of lines being recited and discussions fill the air, occasionally interrupted by the chirping of swallows perched on the eaves.

Where is Li Pu?

He turns his head to look around, but due to his low vantage point, all he can see are the shoes and lower edges of people passing by.

But before long, Bai Gaoxing feels himself move again, the box rising a bit as he is placed on a stone table in a corner.

From this position, he can see people’s faces. Bai Gaoxing begins to observe with great interest. He sees many people in ancient costumes, their long hair and flowing robes creating an elegant, graceful appearance.

Mei Youshu stands by the table, scanning the area. They had agreed to meet in this courtyard, but the person still hasn’t arrived, and his phone isn’t connecting. Mei Youshu guesses he is probably still changing clothes.

A little anxious, Mei Youshu taps the box gently. Although he really wants to ask someone to watch over Dabai, he still can’t bring himself to trust anyone else.

After a while, a commotion stirs in the crowd. A man in a vest and cap enters through the main entrance, followed by a slender figure.

“Sorry, sorry, I’m late…”

Mei Youshu spots them immediately and takes a few steps forward. “Director Sun.”

He looks around the director and realizes that while Lin Shi is with him, Li Pu is nowhere to be seen.

“Where’s Brother Li?” he asks.

Director Sun adjusts his cap. “Teacher Lei came in through the back door just now—hey, there he is!”

He raises his head to gesture. Mei Youshu turns around and sees the figure he has been looking for has appeared from the other side at some point.

In the airline box, Bai Gaoxing happily admires the beautiful clothes and gowns around him. The fabric is fine, and the patterns intricate. He looks around, but then his gaze catches a touch of blue, so close…

This is the first time someone has passed by so closely. Bai Gaoxing studies the fabric carefully, noticing the light golden patterns woven into it. The design is exquisite, and the clothing looks like it belongs to someone of great power and influence.

It would be nice to touch it.

Bai Gaoxing feels a slight pang of regret. But then he hears the distinct sound of a “click” as the cage door opens!

Assistant! Where’s the assistant?? Is no one watching?!

Bai Gaoxing feels the cage being lifted, and his vision shifts from the man’s waist to his face.

He freezes for a moment.

This is… a man even more handsome than the ones he has seen before.

The man wears a dark purple robe, his long black hair flowing smoothly, a strand falling across the side of his face, giving him a cold, striking appearance. His sharp eyebrows and the curve of his lips, which are pressed into a thin, almost blade-like line, only add to his commanding presence.

A bit good-looking, and a bit… familiar?

“Dabai.” The man calls to him.

Bai Gaoxing’s heart skips a beat.

It’s him!?

Bai Gaoxing’s gaze shifts, and he whistles twice, not at all embarrassed or ashamed for almost not recognizing his owner.

But then, the longing that has built up over the past few days surges all at once. His heart feels both warm and heavy, and even his nose and eyes start to feel a little wet.

The airline box is slightly slippery from the tilt, and Bai Gaoxing tries to climb up, poking his head out. “Ga.”

Li Pu lowers his gaze and studies him carefully, as if he, too, has missed him.

After a moment, he says, “You seem to have gained weight again.”

Bai Gaoxing: “… “

The warmth he just felt? Definitely fake!!
