- Chapter 49 - Part 2
Dear Readers,
Due to a temporary website issue, starting around April 3, all novels started before January 2025 will be temporarily moved to the drafts folder for approximately 3–4 weeks. Unfortunately, this novel is included in that list.
In the meantime, I will be uploading the latest advance chapters to my Ko-fi account for my supporters. Regular updates will resume as soon as the site allows.
Thank you for your patience and support!
Bai Gaoxing is diving.
To be honest, if he isn’t worried about Mei Youshu chasing him, he would just take the elevator.
Flying alone is really tiring.
Listening to Mei Youshu’s shouts from upstairs, Bai Gaoxing suppresses the small bit of guilt in his heart and flaps his wings to speed up.
After careful calculation, he realizes he can’t remember how many days it has been since he’s been free to move around. If he has to stay in the cage until Li Pu comes back in three months…
Bai Gaoxing shudders.
It’s decided! He will have his freedom today, for at least three months!
Star Entertainment Media Company is designed to be well-connected, with three staircases: left, right, and center. Bai Gaoxing swoops down from the seventh floor to the sixth floor, runs to another staircase, turns a corner, and flies back up to the eighth floor.
The structure of the eighth floor is similar to the seventh floor, but the corridor is wider, and the walls are beautifully decorated, perfect for use as a backdrop.
Could it be the company’s cultural wall?
Bai Gaoxing looks around, then continues forward. After making a turn, he runs into an anchor holding a mobile phone with a long pole.
“This is the eighth floor of Star Entertainment, and it’s often used by many anchors in the company as a backdrop for their streams. There are also shooting areas at the top, each with a different style—oh my god!?”
The person broadcasting feels something suddenly land on his shoulder. When he turns his head, he is met with a bird’s face.
【Oh my god, what is this? Is it a pet raised by Star Entertainment?】
【Wow, isn’t this Dabai?】
【Are you sure? Or is it just something that looks like it?】
Bai Gaoxing realizes he has accidentally entered someone else’s live stream. He quickly spreads his wings and pats the man’s shoulder, then faces the camera and says, “Hello~”
【Yes! The way it speaks, it’s definitely Dabai!】
【That’s not right, isn’t Dabai being raised by Li Pu?】
【You actually believe that? It’s obviously part of the company’s plan to create a pet-owner persona for Li Pu!】
Seeing the conversation going off-track, the innocent streamer quickly tries to correct things: “This, this, the company never had this parrot before! This is the first time I’ve seen it. I’ve been doing company promotions for so long, how can you not believe me?”
【We believe you! But right now, I’m more interested in Dabai than the Star Entertainment photography wall!】
【Though I’m curious about the layout of Star Entertainment’s building, Dabai is definitely the priority right now, ahhhh!】
【Streamer, focus on the bird! Isn’t this more interesting than the wall?】
【It flew!!!】
The sound of flapping wings suddenly echoes, and the anchor feels his shoulder lighten. The parrot that had been perched there just moments ago flies to the photography area the anchor had mentioned in the blink of an eye.
“Hey, hey—don’t go over there! There’s someone in there!” he shouts, running a few steps and watching the snow-white shadow disappear around the corner.
What the hell!
The anchor, who is in charge of the company’s internal publicity, watches the number of viewers in his live stream surge dramatically, and the normally calm barrage is now as chaotic as boiling water.
He quickly grabs his personal phone to tell others in the group about the big white bird that has appeared in the company, only to find that the company’s second group has already been discussing it.
【Report! There’s no bird on the third floor!】
【There’s no bird on the fourth floor.】
【The windows are all closed, and it’s not on the eleventh floor.】
The publicity anchor quickly types: 【It’s on the eighth floor! Over by the photography area, I just saw it.】
At that moment, Bai Gaoxing had already arrived at the photography area.
Wow!
As soon as he arrives, he is captivated by the various themed sets.
This one is a starry sky, that one is a rose garden, and another is a classroom… Bai Gaoxing quietly flies closer, seeing people already shooting inside.
Well, no need to disturb them.
Bai Gaoxing quietly flies backward, trying to avoid any interference. But when he flies off, he still ends up appearing in the livestream shot of a group of people, and he can’t avoid bumping into a streamer who has just opened the door.
On Weibo’s trending topics, the search volume for #Star Entertainment##Dabai##Livestream# skyrockets.
“Have you seen the topic about Star Entertainment Dabai?”
“I saw it, I’m dying of laughter. How many live broadcast rooms has Dabai appeared in?”
“I counted—including the ones that just passed by, there are six now, the fast typers managed to screenshot it.”
“I saw the ‘Ordering Takeout’ one, Dabai was really forced to work, and still couldn’t even eat—so tragic.”
Just as netizens continue to chat excitedly about Star Entertainment, it is finally lunch hour at the company.
At this moment, they are free to move.
The employees exchange confused glances before slowly standing up from their workstations. They walk out of their departments with an odd sense of purpose, as if they are tasked with carrying out a difficult task.
In the company’s cafeteria, the staff, already holding spoons, are puzzled. Normally, a large crowd would gather for lunch, but today, there are only a few people.
Meanwhile, Mei Youshu is watching the surveillance footage on the first floor.
“Here, and here.” He points to areas on the computer screen. “Zoom in.”
The surveillance footage shows the snow-white parrot turning down the stairs.
Qian Tai is also monitoring the situation while glancing at messages in their group chat. “It was on the eighth floor just now, but not anymore.” She can’t help laughing. “If Brother Li finds out, you won’t be able to explain this.”
Mei Youshu rubs his temples, feeling a headache. “I didn’t expect Dabai to fly away…”
Qian Tai thinks for a moment. “You said Dabai is so smart. Do you think he’ll fly back by himself later?”
Mei Youshu looks at her and remains silent.
In the eyes of others, how smart is Dabai, really?
…
At that moment, Bai Gaoxing has returned from exploring the 12th floor and is resting on the windowsill of the 10th-floor corridor.
He hasn’t expected the 12th floor to be the office of Agent Lei Li, but the door is closed, and no one knows where she has gone.
Bai Gaoxing glances at the clock on the wall. It’s past 12 o’clock—time to head back.
He sighs. It seems he will have to accept his fate.
“Look! Is that it?”
A sudden voice startles Bai Gaoxing. He looks down and sees several people with employee badges standing at the stairs. One of them points at him in surprise.
“I think it is,” another person says, rolling up their sleeves. “Why are you just standing there? Catch it!”
Furious, Bai Gaoxing shoots down from his perch, charging past the group of people.
As he rushes downstairs, he encounters even more people.
Bai Gaoxing sees more employees gathering at the stairs, and with no way to retreat, he runs toward the lobby on the first floor, a crowd of people chasing after him.
Behind him is a swarm of people, and in front of him, the company door is shut. Thinking quickly, Bai Gaoxing flies up to the chandelier on the first floor.
The chandelier sways, and Bai Gaoxing clings to it tightly, feeling a little dizzy from the height.
It’s safe up here, but not entirely comfortable. He holds on to the metal lamppost next to him for support.
“What should we do?” Qian Tai notices the commotion in the hall and turns to see the big white parrot on the ceiling.
Weak, pitiful, and helpless.
Mei Youshu’s blood pressure spikes, and he grabs his phone. “Call the warehouse for a ladder.”
“How are we supposed to get a ladder that high?” Qian Tai stops him. “Why don’t you try calling him down?”
“Yes, let’s try calling it down and see if it listens.”
“Dabai is pretty smart, so let’s give it a try.”
Others echo.
There is nothing else they can do but try.
Mei Youshu, with little hope, waves up to the parrot. “Dabai, come down!”
Ah, they’re calling me.
Bai Gaoxing pokes his head out from behind the lamppost and sees the young man at the front desk extending his hand, as if offering to help him.
He is immediately touched. Mei Youshu is so afraid of birds, yet he still manages to overcome his fear to call him down.
Well then, Bai Gaoxing thinks, I must give him face this one time.
Amid the crowd’s exclamations, Bai Gaoxing slowly descends and lands, gripping Mei Youshu’s arm tightly.
He looks at the young man and thinks to himself: Look. see how well I’m cooperating!
“Awesome, Brother Shu!”
“Wow, that’s amazing! He actually listens to you!”
Under the gazes of the crowd, Mei Youshu manages a strained but calm smile, forcing his stiff arm to remain composed. “It’s nothing. Let’s go eat. We still have work to do in the afternoon.”
The crowd disperses, leaving only Qian Tai by his side.
Bai Gaoxing tilts his head, noticing the beautiful woman trying not to laugh. Suddenly, he feels the “stand” he’s perched on start to move.
Mei Youshu twists his arm, unable to bear it any longer. “Help me hold him.”
…
So, Bai Gaoxing is returned to the original live broadcast room.
Contrary to his expectations of a miserable life locked away in a cage, Bai Gaoxing finds he is still living freely. However, the cage is more for convenience—water, food, and waste management.
Ah, I should’ve known better than to fly away.
But life has changed. Before, he only ever faced Li Pu, but now, he gets to see so many people every day!
And they all come to see him.
Bai Gaoxing sighs inwardly and turns to the crowd, spreading his wings. “Hello, everyone!”
“Dabai, can we take a picture with you?”
“Can you take one with me and Dabai too?”
“Dabai, look here!”
“Ahhh, it’s so cute! And it talks better than my second aunt’s cousin’s son’s classmate!”
The company has unanimously decided that Dabai is their group pet, and every day, people come to visit.
The soft and silly parrot is irresistibly cute, especially when it can talk!
Bai Gaoxing plays happily with the employees, while Mei Youshu dutifully reports to Li Pu.
“Brother Li, Dabai is doing well at the company.”
“Everyone likes him. Don’t worry. I’ll send you a few more videos.”
Meanwhile, far away in the crew in Chuncheng, Li Pu listens to the voice message his assistant has sent.
Then, there are several videos, ranging from ten seconds to a minute long.
In one, Dabai holds the sweet potato strips given to him by others in one paw, tilting his head and looking forward.
The voiceover asks, “Dabai, is it delicious?”
The snow-white parrot flaps its wings and responds, “Delicious! Thank you! You’re welcome.”
The next video shows a person “arguing” with Dabai.
Person: “What are you doing?”
Dabai: “What are you doing?”
Person: “Stop imitating me!”
Dabai: “Stop imitating me!”
After a few moments of this bickering, Li Pu can already sense how happy his parrot is.
He raises a hand to his chin and chuckles inwardly. It seems that, even in his absence, Dabai can still enjoy the company of others…
The last video is a long one. This time, no one else is around—just Dabai, gazing deeply out of the window.
The person filming is close enough to hear him mumbling something, almost as though he is singing.
“Dabai, what are you talking about?” the voiceover asks. But Li Pu can tell that these are all jokes Dabai has learned and songs he’s listened to back home.
The parrot in the frame, with its round, black eyes, seems to be looking directly at Li Pu through the screen.
Then, it tilts its head and makes a sound that is both innocent and expectant: “When will you come back?”
The voiceover laughs. “Who’s that? Do you miss Teacher Li?”
The big white parrot pauses, then nods sheepishly: “Is it okay?”
Li Pu’s heart softens all at once.
Another message from Mei Youshu comes through: “Brother Li, I should be back soon.”
Li Pu clicks on the video again, rubbing his fingertips on the warm screen for a moment, before slowly typing a single word: OK.
…
Happily forgetful.
Bai Gaoxing is being fed, and the phrase “happily forgetful” suddenly pops into his mind.
Looking at the company employees in front of him, all with smiles of adoration, he rubs his claws and instinctively glances out the window.
But there isn’t much to see.
Compared to these people, he still prefers to be with Li Pu. Even if there are no snacks every day, even if he has to go to bed early and wake up early, even if it is he who has to comfort people instead of being comforted…
Bai Gaoxing gazes up at the sky with a melancholy look. Is he being controlled by a CPU?
This inner conflict lasts until the next week when Lei Li returns.
One morning, Bai Gaoxing is brought to the 12th floor by Mei Youshu.
The office door, which had been tightly locked last time, is now open. Inside the room, a woman in a suit is facing the window, her backlit figure exuding an air of authority.
She turns around, still holding a cigarette between her fingers.
Bai Gaoxing’s heart trembles.
“Can you tell me—” The woman parts her red lips, her gaze dark, “How has Li Pu’s reputation become so dangerous while I’ve been away?”
