Dear Readers,

Due to a temporary website issue, starting around April 3, all novels started before January 2025 will be temporarily moved to the drafts folder for approximately 3–4 weeks. Unfortunately, this novel is included in that list.

In the meantime, I will be uploading the latest advance chapters to my Ko-fi account for my supporters. Regular updates will resume as soon as the site allows.

Thank you for your patience and support!

The ringtone echoes from the device in the living room.

Bai Gaoxing remembers that after Li Pu left home, he has never turned it off to make internet surfing more convenient. He forgets about it after waiting all day yesterday.

But he doesn’t recall it having a phone function…

He flaps his wings and flies faster, his face colliding with the screen without stopping.

Ouch!

He quickly gets up and turns around, trying to figure out how to answer the call.

The screen displays a call interface identical to that of a mobile phone, with one side red and the other green. Bai Gaoxing is overjoyed, lifting a paw to press the button.

The ringtone stops abruptly.

Bai Gaoxing freezes for a moment, then suddenly realizes: the ringtone has lasted too long, and the other party has hung up!

He quickly lowers his head to check, noticing a missed call from a string of numbers he has never seen before.

Damn, who is this?

A telemarketer? An advertisement? … It can’t be Li Pu, right?

Bai Gaoxing, now disheartened, makes a random guess and presses “Call back” after hesitating for a while.

It’s fine if it’s a scam call. Let’s see if he can squeeze a few cents out of it first.

Meanwhile, Li Pu, far away in Chuncheng, stares at the phone screen where the call has automatically ended and falls silent.

“Brother Li, should I wait a little longer?” Mei Youshu coughs softly. “I think the rain is letting up. Maybe I can leave early tonight.”

It is ridiculous to keep expecting Dabai to answer the phone.

As soon as he finishes speaking, the wind howls outside, blowing branches into the air.

Li Pu: “… “

Mei Youshu: “… “

“Uh.” Mei Youshu is slightly embarrassed. “Anyway, it’s almost over. The forecast says that the abnormal weather in Chuncheng is temporary. It’s just a typhoon—”

“Buzz—” His words are cut off by a sudden vibration.

He freezes, staring as Li Pu’s phone screen lights up with an incoming call: 0000.

Mei Youshu’s eyes widen in disbelief.

Li Pu is stunned, but his body moves faster than his mind, and his fingertips immediately reach to answer the call.

“…”

A long silence follows.

Bai Gaoxing, on the other side, holds his breath, waiting for the scammer to speak first, so he can take control of the conversation.

After a long pause, a familiar voice comes through the other end: “…Dabai?”

Bai Gaoxing is a little confused.

He leans in closer, tilting his head to listen carefully, almost afraid he is dreaming.

The man’s breathing comes through the microphone, rough and heavy.

“Dabai?” someone calls out from the other side again.

Bai Gaoxing trembles, a whirlwind of emotions stirring in his chest, and it finally condenses into a single word: “Ga.”

Then, he sees a video request pop up on the screen.

? ? ?

Looking at the floating dialog box, Bai Gaoxing raises a paw and then lowers it again, feeling conflicted inside.

Should he answer? Doesn’t it seem too strange? But if he doesn’t, he kind of wants to take a look at the other person.

On the other side, Mei Youshu is stunned as he watches Li Pu initiate the video call.

No, it must have been a coincidence earlier! Dabai just heard the sound, jumped on it, and accidentally opened it.

“Brother Li, wake up! How could Dabai answer the video request?”

The next second, he sees the parrot’s white head appear in the camera frame, while Li Pu smiles slightly and zooms in to look at it.

Crazy, absolutely crazy!

Mei Youshu squats down slowly, his head in his hands, unable to process the fact that Dabai has answered the phone—haha, if someone told him one day that Dabai could go to school, he wouldn’t even be surprised!

Knowing that his assistant is afraid of birds, Li Pu kindly doesn’t show him the screen, instead observing the parrot in the camera.

When he sees it, he can’t help frowning.

Its feathers are messy, not as smooth as before, and it seems thinner, its chest is sunken, looking a bit listless.

“Didn’t you eat well at home?” he asks.

The parrot on the other side seems embarrassed by the question, rubbing its claws together and awkwardly nodding. “Eat, eat.”

Li Pu relaxes his expression. “Stay still, I’ll be home soon.”

Dabai: “…”

Dabai: “He—pah!”

Li Pu: “???”

Li Pu doesn’t expect the parrot, who has always been well-behaved, to suddenly turn hostile. He frowns, sensing something isn’t right. “You’ve been watching TV again.”

Bai Gaoxing feels a little smug and thinks, How could anyone who doesn’t keep their promises have the right to say that? People who don’t keep their promises don’t have the right to lecture him!

The next second, he sees a tree floating by the window behind Li Pu—a tree!?

Bai Gaoxing rubs his eyes, doubting whether he’s still asleep, but then he sees several more small trees, similar to the first one, flying by one after another.

It seems that Li Pu notices the parrot’s astonished gaze, so he turns his head to look outside at the wildly blowing wind.

Then, he turns back and patiently reassures, “The weather’s bad, we’ll have to wait until tonight.”

Bai Gaoxing realizes.

His eyelids twitch, looking at the sky behind Li Pu, which is filled with dark clouds, pressing down on the city more menacingly than the storm in Jiangcheng two days ago.

It seems… I understand now.

Bai Gaoxing instantly forgives him and hopes that Li Pu’s assistant will cast the “no trees” spell to protect them from the flying trees.

“Okay, let’s stop here.” Soon, another call comes in, and Li Pu prepares to hang up.

But before he does, he looks at the parrot on the screen and says, “I’ll be back soon.”

The screen goes black the next moment, though the call continues. Bai Gaoxing sees this and can’t help but murmur, “I miss you…”

The call ends.

He isn’t sure if Li Pu heard it.

Bai Gaoxing feels his ears burning. Ah, ah, ah, I’d rather not have said that!

He quickly flies back to Li Pu’s bedroom, rolls around on the bed, and messes up his feathers again.

His mood completely shifts.

The initial sadness melts away like an iceberg turning into water, then evaporates into steam, carried away by the warm sunlight to the clouds.

Especially after hearing that someone might return tonight, Bai Gaoxing feels so happy he almost wants to perform the Eight Brocade exercise.

A bird’s life should be lived with purpose!

In the following hours, Bai Gaoxing eats, drinks, and takes time to sing a song, saving it in a draft folder.

The bed no longer feels cold at night. The pale walls are like soft, milky ice cream, and the sound of the aquarium filter becomes the gentle accompaniment to his falling asleep.

It is truly nice.

Bai Gaoxing lies on his back in the quilt, slowly closing his eyes.

Early the next morning, someone turns the lock on the door.

Bai Gaoxing springs out of the room and sees Mei Youshu with slightly damp hair, closing the door while talking on the phone.

“I’ve arrived…”

“Don’t worry, everything at home seems fine…”

The young man scans the room and then quickly looks at him, “The house is still intact, ate, Dabai’s doing fine, still alive.”

“Well… okay… I’ll take it there later.”

He hangs up the phone.

Mei Youshu sighs. The timing has been too tight, and only he can return for now.

He hopes Lin Shi can gain more experience there and not waste the opportunity.

Turning around, Mei Youshu sees the big white parrot standing guard at the bedroom door. Facing those piercing eyes, he waves his hands with a tingling scalp, trying to avoid their gaze. “Hey, don’t you recognize me?”

Bai Gaoxing approaches and walks around him. When the young man tenses, as if ready to jump out of his skin, Bai Gaoxing says in a particularly deep voice, “You still remember to come back.”

Damn, it’s become a spirit.

Mei Youshu wipes his face, steeling himself. “Dabai, I’ll take you to the company later. You’ll stay there for a while before Brother Li comes back.”

As if summoning the courage to speak, Mei Youshu continues, “The company is great; there are many beautiful sisters, some of whom will play with you every day. Sister Li even had someone clean up a room for you. She said you can treat the company as your home, so you have to thank her.”

Bai Gaoxing looks at him like he’s a fool.

After Mei Youshu finishes speaking, he begins to pack up his things as if he’s looting the place.

Bird food, water feeder, perch… he even takes the poop bags—nothing is spared.

Then comes the most important item: the parrot.

Bai Gaoxing quietly watches Mei Youshu frantically rub his short hair, then turn around, take a deep breath, and pull a pair of gloves from his pocket.

While putting on the gloves, he flashes a grim yet gentle smile. “Dabai, don’t be afraid, I’ll put you in the bag.”

Bai Gaoxing, however, walks right into the bird bag himself.

Mei Youshu: “…”

Mei Youshu: “!?!”

Worried that the parrot will change its mind and jump out, Mei Youshu quickly closes the bird bag shut like a hungry tiger pouncing on its prey and breathes a huge sigh of relief.

Bai Gaoxing: I’m mostly worried you’ll try to catch me with your eyes closed and accidentally step on me to death.

Before leaving, Mei Youshu double-checks Li Pu’s house, finding a few minor issues.

The bed is a little wrinkled, there are bird feathers everywhere, and…

“Ah, yes, the electricity bill is a bit high,” Mei Youshu reports while driving.

“It’s fine,” Li Pu immediately responds. “It should be Dabai watching TV.”

But watching TV alone shouldn’t use that much electricity, right?

Mei Youshu is full of questions. Even if the TV is on for three days and nights, it wouldn’t explain the high electricity bill—!

However, he quickly redirects his focus and concentrates on driving the parrot to its destination.

Star Entertainment…

“Hey, have you heard? Brother Shu is bringing the parrot that Teacher Li raised to the company later.”

“Really? That Dabai? The one who talks so fluently?”

“Yes, yes! It’s super cute!”

“Didn’t Sister Li say Teacher Li cherishes it a lot? Why bring it here all of a sudden?”

“Teacher Li went to film, and no one could take care of it. Sister Li asked us to look after it until he returns.”

In the company, several people who have heard the news can’t help but discuss it.

Though Star Entertainment’s management system is usually relaxed, there has never been a case of raising pets at the company—especially not a pet owned by the movie emperor. If anything happens to it, who could afford the consequences?

“…But won’t the bird just poop everywhere?” One person, after a long silence, asks. “The poop machine… wouldn’t Sister Li go crazy when she comes back?”

“It seems Dabai doesn’t do that,” another person, who knows the gossip, says. “I heard Dabai uses the bathroom on its own! And didn’t they say they’ve even set up a special room for it?”

“Then what does it eat? Can it eat pork? What about Coke?” another person asks.

“Hey, hey, hey! Don’t feed it randomly! What are you thinking?!” a fourth person chimes in. “But I’m more excited to hear Dabai speak, to see if it’s really as impressive as in the Xinghuo video.”

“Me too…”

As they are talking, a car stops at the company’s door, and a figure gets out.

It’s drizzling today, and the fog makes it hard to see more than twenty meters ahead. But as the figure gets closer, the company employees realize it’s Mei Youshu.

“Come help move the things inside,” the young man calls, waving from the door.

The employees hurry over in a swarm.

“Food, daily necessities… everything is so complete.” The front desk employee speaks as she curiously watches Mei Youshu unload items from the car. “Where’s the cage?”

“The cage is new; it’ll be delivered later,” Mei Youshu replies. Once everything is inside the company, he waves his hand. “Close the door.”

It’s right around work hours.

Mei Youshu is already well-known at Star Entertainment, so when the employees on the first floor see the commotion, those who can move freely gather to watch.

Just as the bird bag is being lifted by Mei Youshu, Bai Gaoxing, still a little dazed inside, looks around and sees the curious faces coming from all directions.

He jolts upright, fully awake.

So many people!

Q: So many people to keep you company, are you moved?

Dabai: N-no, I can’t move…
