Dear Readers,

Due to a temporary website issue, starting around April 3, all novels started before January 2025 will be temporarily moved to the drafts folder for approximately 3–4 weeks. Unfortunately, this novel is included in that list.

In the meantime, I will be uploading the latest advance chapters to my Ko-fi account for my supporters. Regular updates will resume as soon as the site allows.

Thank you for your patience and support!

[REC.]

“Dabai.” The man’s voice sounds faintly.

“Ah?” The snow-white parrot looks up, seemingly confused.

“Come, come here.”

“What are you doing?” The parrot tilts its head as if in deep thought. A few seconds later, it walks toward the camera.

[REC.]

The big white parrot elegantly holds a piece of rapeseed in its claws and eats it, crunching loudly. It appears to wolf it down but is actually quite perfunctory.

The man asks aloud, “Is it delicious?”

The parrot is stunned for a moment and slowly turns its head.

The next second, it sobs, “You abused me.”

[REC.]

A beautiful, large rattan ball sits in view—a very popular toy among pet birds.

The big white parrot tentatively pokes the ball with its beak and seems to like it very much. It first rolls it back and forth with its claws, then kicks it to make it roll. Twenty seconds later…

“Help! Help!!!” The parrot plunges its head into the hole of the rattan ball.

“Dabai, don’t move!” The man’s voice outside the camera grows frantic.

[REC.]

…

Standing on the back of the sofa, Bai Gaoxing watches as Li Pu connects the video recorder to the laptop and replays the video he recorded today.

“…”

His body tenses, claws digging into the sofa, and a strange sound escapes his throat.

Help! Who is this stupid bird in the video? It’s definitely not me! It’s definitely not me!

Is it a problem with the third perspective? Or is there some other reason——

Bai Gaoxing glares at the back of Li Pu’s head, his expression contorted! His eyes are fierce! Internally, he is in turmoil!

It must be Li Pu’s filming technique that’s wrong! He never feels awkward when he is live-streaming! It’s definitely because the camera magnifies that feeling!

Bai Gaoxing can’t calm down. He jumps onto Li Pu’s shoulder, stretches out his claws, and is about to hit the delete key.

A big hand raises to block his action.

“Dabai, look.” The instigator, still smiling, says, “You’re still very cute.”

Bai Gaoxing immediately lowers his head, twisting his neck 180 degrees to look back at Li Pu. “Are you sure?”

Li Pu reaches out to pat him, saying, “I know you want to play; there’s no rush. There are still many days ahead.”

Bai Gaoxing feels despair.

This morning, after Li Pu turns on the video recorder, Bai Gaoxing initially thinks that Li Pu isn’t planning to go live, so he runs over to perform by himself.

But then he is caught off guard.

He wonders why Li Pu later takes out toys to play with him, thinking that maybe this man has a change of heart and feels guilty for not spending enough time with him.

So, it turns out you can do business too…

“Dabai, look at this.”

The man’s voice sounds again, and Bai Gaoxing looks up lazily to see him pulling a bicycle from the drawer of the coffee table.

Suddenly, Bai Gaoxing perks up and takes two steps toward Li Pu involuntarily. How could he have not noticed such a fun thing before?

Li Pu smiles, places the small, exquisite bicycle on the ground, and gives it a gentle push. “Do you want to try it?”

Of course, he wants to try it!

Bai Gaoxing eagerly hops on the bicycle, gripping the two “pedal” handles with his paws and rolling them clockwise.

“Dabai, look here.”

When Bai Gaoxing hears the voice, he turns around and sees Li Pu holding a video camera aimed at him. The huge lens glints brightly, reflecting the light.

Bai Gaoxing thinks, “…”

He feels deceived.

Li Pu watches as Dabai, who has been happily riding the bicycle, suddenly lowers his head, jumps to the side, and kicks the bicycle away. The small bike flies far off, drawing a large arc before “banging” against the table leg.

Li Pu pauses for a moment, then smiles helplessly, puts down the recorder, and approaches to ruffle Bai Gaoxing’s feathers. “You can have one today.”

The man holds out a pine nut.

Smooth and fragrant.

Bai Gaoxing stares at him for a long time, thinking that he will never give in, and turns his head away coldly.

After a few seconds, he turns back and quickly snatches the pine nut.

 …

Such peaceful days last for several days. Li Pu settles into a routine. In the morning, he reads scripts at home or plays with Dabai for a while, then goes out to the library or the mall in the afternoon.

Bai Gaoxing enjoys an even more comfortable life. He stays at home all day, watching TV and playing with the vacuum cleaner. He takes showers when he feels hot and sneaks into bed when he gets cold. At least he doesn’t think about surfing the Internet anymore.

—Bai Gaoxing does what he says. He doesn’t touch the equipment during this time, let alone step into the study.

The video recorder on the balcony stays on throughout this period. The operating light transitions from being constantly lit to flickering, nearly running out of power.

However, while the man and the bird enjoy their leisurely days, the company faces some pressure from public opinion.

“These people really like to spread rumors. Which gang did they come from? It’s as if they can smell something,” Lei Li sneers at the computer screen while looking at a “news headline” that pops up.

Mei Youshu comes over to take a look. It is an article written by a little-known blogger that analyzes in detail how Star Entertainment must have subjected Dabai to inhumane training, lamenting that pets in the entertainment industry now live in dire straits. The article suggests that Li Pu must be an accomplice who is aware of it. The reasoning is simple:

“Brother Li’s two accounts have been silent for five or six days,” Mei Youshu repeats, then adds, looking incredulous, “They say this after only five or six days?”

For accounts like Weibo, which require monitoring for activity and announcements, it’s typical for management to ensure a posting frequency of at least once every two weeks. As for private accounts on live broadcast platforms, the lack of management is evident, resulting in a complete absence of regular updates.

Just Li Pu being able to make noise during his vacation is already impressive!

Brother Li is the awesome record-holder for “the artist who hasn’t spoken on a live streaming account for the longest time!”

“After all, this concerns small animals, especially domesticated pets, which can easily be exploited,” Lei Li points at the comments section. “There are quite a few people causing a ruckus under the guise of ‘protecting animals,’ especially with this year’s momentum from ‘Cute Pets Diary’—it’s been under constant scrutiny, and they can leverage it to make a big deal out of it.”

Mei Youshu’s expression turns serious. “Then we should…”

“I have already reported it to the higher-ups and am arranging a video response and a live broadcast.”

Lei Li clicks the mouse and pulls up a video. “I just asked Li Pu to send over the footage he shot these past few days. I’ll have someone select some suitable clips to post as a daily video, which should help dispel the rumors. As for the live broadcast… we need to find an appropriate time for Dabai to officially meet the public. That’s also the company’s stance.”

“Is there a plan for Dabai to participate in the live broadcast?” Mei Youshu asks.

Lei Li ponders. “Considering Dabai’s performance in these videos, he should be fine; he’s quite camera-friendly. It might even help boost his popularity in the future. We should involve him as much as possible; otherwise, who knows what could happen?” She chuckles. “So, you’ll go to his house tomorrow and set up the live broadcast.”

Mei Youshu is surprised. “Tomorrow? So soon!?”

…

Tomorrow arrives.

Mei Youshu takes out the spare key Lei Li gave him and opens the door as gently as possible.

“Brother Shu.” Lin Shi swallows hard. “Is it okay for us to just go in like this since Teacher Li isn’t here?”

“Cough, it’s fine. I’ve already told him; he’ll be back in a bit,” Mei Youshu smiles at the new assistant. “Let’s take care of what we need to do first. Just try not to move around too much when you enter the house.”

Only he, Sister Li, and a handful of senior leaders know that Brother Li goes to psychological counseling every week. Although Lin Shi is temporarily transferred to be Brother Li’s assistant, it is too soon for her to understand.

Mei Youshu sighs quietly. Who knew the timing would be so coincidental?

Fortunately, Brother Li said he would return as soon as possible, and maybe he could catch the tail end of the live broadcast.

With a calm demeanor, Mei Youshu walks into Li Pu’s house.

Lin Shi follows closely behind. As soon as they enter, Mei Youshu calls out, “Dabai?”

A few seconds later, a man’s voice replies, “Dashu?”

Lin Shi looks at Mei Youshu in surprise. “Is Brother Li home?”

Mei Youshu rubs his arms, feeling goosebumps, and sighs, “Dabai, don’t talk like Brother Li.”

“Flutter…”

The sound of flapping wings catches Lin Shi’s attention, and she turns to see a snow-white shadow flying out of the bedroom, landing directly in front of them.

The parrot lands gracefully.

“Wow! Is this Dabai?” Lin Shi’s eyes sparkle with excitement. “So cute!” She turns to Mei Youshu, “Brother Shu, you—Hey, why are you wearing sunglasses?”

Mei Youshu, wanting to hide his fear of birds from his new colleague, coughs. “The sun is a little strong today.”

Lin Shi glances outside. “But it’s a bit cloudy today?”

Mei Youshu: “…”

At that moment, Bai Gaoxing, watching the two unexpected visitors in his home, ignores the awkwardness of getting up from the floor and displays his graceful pose like a white crane spreading its wings.

Hey! Who are you! What do you want!

“Wow, Brother Shu, do you think Dabai is welcoming us?” Lin Shi exclaims, a surprised smile lighting up her face as she waves at him. “Hello, I’m Teacher Li’s Temporary Assistant. My name is Lin Shi.”

What assistant? Temporary assistant?

Bai Gaoxing eyes Lin Shi suspiciously, then glances back at Mei Youshu.

He recognizes this person—the one who is even afraid of KFC.

“What are you doing here?” Bai Gaoxing asks. Li Pu goes out again today without saying a word, and he has no idea if Li Pu knows they are coming.

Mei Youshu doesn’t answer him; instead, he looks around. “The lighting in the living room is a bit dim. Let’s go to the balcony; we’ll shoot a segment directly and keep it authentic.”

Lin Shi nods and takes out a small handheld camera from her bag.

Mei Youshu begins explaining the precautions. “Wait a minute; you’ll start recording as the narrator. Keep a good rhythm. It doesn’t matter if you make mistakes; the sound can be cut out and re-recorded later.” He pauses. “Just use the script we decided on yesterday. Have you memorized it?”

Lin Shi replies confidently, “I’ve memorized it, don’t worry!”

Bai Gaoxing listens to their chatter, growing even more confused. However, when he notices the camera in Lin Shi’s hand, he begins to vaguely piece things together.

They came here to film him…?

Mei Youshu continues, “Okay, Xiao Lin, now go and lead Dabai to the balcony.”

Lin Shi replies, “Okay, I—” She hesitates. “Should I really lead him? Will he be obedient?”

Mei Youshu coughs. “It’s a great opportunity for you to get familiar with Dabai. He might even go there by himself without needing to be led. He’s quite sensible.”

Lin Shi nods, though still half-doubtful. She then turns to the snow-white parrot. “Dabai? Come with me to the balcony?”

Bai Gaoxing takes a few tentative steps forward but then notices the camera pointed at him in Lin Shi’s hand.

Sure enough, he is right.

Li Pu is not home, and they have come to secretly film his bird?

Bai Gaoxing looks at the two with suspicion, uncertain whether this is an official or personal endeavor. Fortunately, Mei Youshu’s next words clarify his doubts: “After we finish filming, we’ll go straight into a short live broadcast on the balcony. We can report back after that. Did you bring the mobile phone holder?”

Bai Gaoxing’s eyes widen in disbelief. They are actually here to do a live broadcast? Why?

“Live broadcast? Why?” he asks directly.

“Huh?” It is Lin Shi who answers him. She smiles and explains, “Of course, it’s to help more people like you~ Many people already adore you, and the company wants to take the opportunity to promote you.”

Oh—official—

Bai Gaoxing nods, and the next second, he sees Lin Shi tugging at Mei Youshu in surprise. “Dabai can respond to me! So smart!”

Mei Youshu thinks, I won’t watch it.

Following Lin Shi’s lead, Bai Gaoxing wobbles toward the balcony.

Yes, he is deliberately pretending to be clueless and unaware; otherwise, it would surely feel strange to the strangers.

Lin Shi holds the camera, talking and filming, her excitement bubbling over. In the footage, the snow-white parrot occasionally spreads its beautiful wings, its round black eyes looking at her innocently. Sometimes, it even interacts with her, saying a few words.

“Dabai, can you fly up here and give it a try?”

Lin Shi tries to wave her hand and is surprised to see the parrot really jump up and flutter to the flower stand on the balcony.

She pulls her gaze from the camera, eager to share this joy with Mei Youshu, but when she looks up, she notices the young man standing far away.

Probably… the distance between the balcony and the living room.

Lin Shi is perplexed. “Brother Shu, why did you move so far away? Just come see how my photos are turning out!”

Mei Youshu waves his hand dismissively. “I’m going to the study to check on something. I trust you’ll take great photos.”

“Oh…” Lin Shi turns back to focus on the parrot.

Bai Gaoxing walks back and forth on the flower stand, occasionally jumping and pecking at the buds that have yet to bloom. His mood gradually lightens, and his movements become more exuberant.

Just as he is happily dancing, Lin Shi keenly notices that his claws have touched a small jar beneath the flowerpot. She hurriedly shouts, “Dabai, be careful—!”

But it is too late.

The small metal jar falls from its height, making a sharp clinking sound.

Lin Shi watches in horror as the jar slowly descends, its lid popping off and its contents spilling out.

She takes a deep breath.

Then screams.

“Ah!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

Mei Youshu is startled by the shout from the balcony and rushes over. “What’s wrong, Xiao Lin?”

Lin Shi, hugging Bai Gaoxing tightly, tumbles out of the balcony, nearly in tears. “Bugs!!!! So many bugs, so disgusting!!!!!”

Mei Youshu’s pupils dilate, but not because of the insects crawling all over the floor. It is Bai Gaoxing’s pointed beak that sends him reeling back in instinctive fear.

“Wait! Don’t come over here!”

“Put down Dabai!”

“Stop!!!”
