  3. Chapter 9 Part 2 - Buying Out the Market

Ye Mumu bought out the entire vegetable market—Chinese cabbage, napa cabbage, Shanghai greens, baby bok choy, white radishes, carrots, sweet potatoes, potatoes, corn… She purchased everything.

Seeing her buy so much, the vegetable vendors swarmed around, offering discounts of a few cents per pound just to sell everything to her.

Ye Mumu ended up buying out the entire market, filling two large trucks.

She hired people to load the goods and gave the truck drivers the warehouse address for delivery.

The warehouse keeper had been on duty the entire day.

Once everything was arranged, she headed to the pharmacy.

There, she purchased gauze, disinfectant alcohol, tweezers, clamps, scalpels, scissors, and suturing thread.

She also bought needles, syringes, antibiotics, hemostatic drugs, and other Western medicines.

From several herbal medicine shops, she bought out more than half their stock, including Yunnan Baiyao, various remedies for injuries, and traditional Chinese medicines for stopping bleeding, reducing inflammation, and promoting tissue regeneration.

Her pickup truck was fully loaded, from the truck bed to the backseat.

Passing by a bookstore, she stopped to buy thirty copies of charts showing the structure of traditional and simplified Chinese characters.

She also bought thirty copies of the Xinhua Dictionary.

Additionally, she purchased thirty sets of the “time travel trilogy”: Barefoot Doctor’s Manual, Militia Military Training Handbook, and Military-Civilian Dual-Use Talent Guide.

All were in simplified Chinese. Whether Zhan Chengyin could read them or not wasn’t her concern.

When she spotted The Art of War on the shelf, she bought thirty sets of that too.

After loading everything, she headed home.

By the time she arrived, it was already two in the afternoon!

The time to transport the rice had come.

Exhausted, she collapsed onto the couch, utterly drained.

After resting for about ten minutes, she gnawed on some bread, gulped down a bottle of water, and shut off the water pump.

When the water flow stopped and the tank was empty, she wrote a note and sent it through:

「I’ve bought medicine and some books. I’ll send those over first.」

「Find a dry indoor space. I’m about to send the medicine.」

「In an hour, be ready with a wide, open space. I’ve bought sixty tons of vegetables.」

She thought there wouldn’t be a response, but shortly after, a piece of white paper came back with 「Okay!」written on it.

Five minutes later, the other side seemed prepared.

She drove her pickup truck into the courtyard, parking by the living room door.

Opening the truck bed, countless boxes of traditional Chinese medicine tumbled down.

She dragged the vase to the door, tapped it, and used her mind to transmit the medicine.

Whoosh!

All the medicine from the truck bed vanished instantly.

She then opened the truck door, and Western medicine boxes poured into the vase.

Finally, she sent in the books and dictionaries from the passenger seat.

The vase absorbed everything!

Once her truck was emptied, she secured the vase with ropes and strapped it into the passenger seat.

Then, she drove with the vase to the warehouse.

Zhan Chengyin had been waiting all day for Ye Mumu’s rice.

Yesterday afternoon, they had used the last 200 jin of meat, 50 packs of noodles, and a box of instant noodles to feed the soldiers.

As they ate, many wept silently, the atmosphere was heavy with sorrow.

The soldiers believed their general had brought out his last reserves to reward them.

Given their recent defeat, many thought this was their last meal before certain death.

Tomorrow, they were to break through the enemy lines.

Twenty thousand men facing an army of three hundred thousand barbarians—victory was nearly impossible.

Even if they fought their way out, famine awaited outside. Survival seemed equally grim.

But this morning, they heard water had arrived!

After delivering buns, steamed buns, and meat rolls to the camp, each group of four soldiers shared a portion.

This time, as they ate, they were moved to tears again!

However, unlike yesterday’s despair, today they ate with joy!

Not only did they get to eat buns, steamed buns, and meat sandwiches, but there was also white porridge… Each soldier received a bowl of finely cooked white rice porridge.

It even had salt sprinkled on top.

Pure, white refined salt!

How long had it been since they’d tasted salt!

The food in the camp had suddenly and unexpectedly improved!

No more scavenging for wild greens or competing with civilians for tree roots.

All the soldiers were in high spirits!

Everyone now had hope of survival!
